Jessie E. Carlson
Jessie E. Carlson 85, of Two Harbors died peacefully, Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 at her home.

She was born Dec. 22, 1925, to William and Ossie (Rook) Shewell in Portland, Ind., where she grew up. In 1940, she moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, where she graduated from Storm Lake High School. Jessie graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake with a degree in social studies. She then attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a teaching degree.

Jessie taught at Two Harbors High School until she married in June of 1956. She stayed home to raise her family until she was hired by Harcourt Brace in 1968, where she worked until her retirement in January of 1988.

Jessie was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Women of the Moose, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, and Vasa Lodge. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and traveling through Europe.

Jessie is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Shewell; and great-granddaughter, Josephine.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Kim (Bruce) Ziegler, William (Philomenia) Carlson, and Kristina (Bruce) Peterson; grandchildren, Steven (Daniela), Matthew (Kieree), Victoria, Jarrod (Beth), Al (Kimmy), Jaclyn (Ryan), Darren, Justin (Susan), and Jeremy (Jessica); four great-grandchildren; nephew, Thomas (Rhonda) Shewell; niece, Connie (Mike) Shewell-Kahnke; and sister-in-law, Marge Shewell.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary’s Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Jessie.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Saturday before a noon service at Cavallin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, with lunch to follow at the Two Harbors Moose Lodge.

Robert Larson
Robert James Larson passed away peacefully July 28, 2011, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Duluth to Henry and Edna Larson, graduated from Duluth Central High School, later serving in the Air Force. He was employed by Reserve Mining and Minnesota Power as a chief engineer. His family lived in Silver Bay, Two Harbors, and later he retired in Duluth.

He is survived by a daughter, Robin (Curt) Lorang of Inver Grove Heights; and three sons, Brian (Lana) of Bloomington, Eric (Pam) of Bloomington, and John (Nicolle) of St. Paul. He was a proud grandfather to his six beloved grandchildren, Adam (Stefany) Lorang, Aaron Lorang, Chris Larson, Marissa Larson, Gretchen North, and Carolina Larson. He is also survived by his longtime friend and dear companion Esther Kirsch.

Robert led a caring, loving, nurturing, and thoughtful life. He was a loving friend, spouse, father, brother and grandfather whose children and grandchildren loved him immensely, always thinking and speaking very highly of him.

He was self-taught, read voluminously, loved laughing, the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and spending time at the cabin. His wit, wisdom, common-sense world view and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene; sisters, Betty and Phyllis; brother, Warren; and an infant son.

Robert’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth Clinic and Hospice Unit for their compassionate care during his last days.

A memorial service will at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth. A visitation with family and friends is scheduled for 2 p.m. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers and will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Robert John Carlson
Robert John Carlson passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth.

He was born Oct. 1, 1926, to Carl L. and Evelina (Sjolund) Carlson in Two Harbors, the fifth of six children.

Until the age of 3, Robert was a happy, healthy, and bright little boy. He spoke full sentences by age 2 and sang songs by age 3. A debilitating illness changed his life forever but he always worked very hard at whatever task he had to perform.

He attended Minnehaha School in Two Harbors and then helped his parents tend the family farm. He also worked as a laborer on the DM&IR Railroad for a short time during World War II.

After his parents passed away, he lived in a number of group homes in the Duluth area. He adapted well to city living for being a country boy, and soon mastered the city bus system. At one of the group homes he met Tom Miller, who became his best friend. Bob and Tom loved to go shopping, taking the bus to the mall, and one of their favorite places was Best Buy.

Bob really loved his western heroes - Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, the Lone Ranger - and the music they sang. He loved to hear one of his caregivers play the guitar and he loved the harmonica. All music brought him joy.

Bob’s family wishes to thank all of his group home caregivers, especially his last home at Innovative Living. Our special thanks go to dear Tom Miller, who brought joy, laughter, and fun into his life as only a best friend can do. Also a special thanks to the employees and management at Best Buy for their caring and special attention to Tom and Bob.

Thanks also to his guardian, Lynn; his case managers, especially Mark Johnson; Chris Jensen Home; and St. Luke’s Hospice for making his last days as comfortable as possible.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth Shubert and Mae Montague; and brothers, Bertil and Richard Carlson.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia (Harlan) Olson; sister-in-law, Audrey Carlson; nieces Kathy (Roger) Saamanen, Joan Gelineau, Carol (Allen) Heil, and Julie (Rocky) Stewart; nephews Stephen (Carol) and Gary (Leslee) Carlson, Mark (Kay) Shubert, Tim (Tammy), Charles, Curtis, Kirk (Shelley), and Lance (Melanie) Olson; and many great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation begins at 1 p.m. today (Friday) before a 2 p.m. service at the United Church of Two Harbors, 531 3rd Ave. Memorials are preferred to the Lake County Development Achievement Center, Knife River.

Genevieve “Gen” Grahek
Genevieve “Gen” Grahek, 94, of Silver Bay, passed away Friday July 15, 2011, at the Cook County North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais.

Gen was born Aug. 25, 1916, to Karl and Justine (Wroblewski) Karczjewski in Milwaukee, where she grew up and graduated from South Division High School.

As a young lady she was employed at Layton Park State Bank, Milwaukee County Court House, Baxter’s, and Manpower Temp Service in Milwaukee.

Gen married Edward Grahek Jan. 25, 1941, and they moved to Silver Bay in the summer of 1955 as pioneer residents of the community. She was employed as an executive secretary at Reserve Mining Company for 29 years.

Gen enjoyed traveling, singing, and crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader and “Hand & Foot” card player. She especially enjoyed the outdoors and time spent at the family cabin on Devil Track Lake near Grand Marais.

She was a founding member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was the head of all church circles, later leading St. Rita’s Circle. She also served on the funeral committee and was in the church choir. She was a member of the Silver Bay Golden Agers, a scout leader, and the first woman president of AmVets.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend, and was a warm compassionate, caring and understanding person with a great sense of humor. She was always willing to listen to and help others. She was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She and her daughter, Janet, were best friends.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; a brother and three sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Grahek of Silver Bay; a son, John (Barbara) Grahek of Rochester; a sister, Alice Gjurek of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Elizabeth Nelson, Tiffany Wyant, John (Kim) Grahek Jr., Sami and John Tayeb; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Church in Silver Bay, the Silver Bay Library and the North Shore Care Center’s Activity Department in Grand Marais.

There was a visitation and Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at St. Mary’s in Silver Bay. Burial was at Silver Bay Cemetery.

Fanny M. Graden
Fanny M. Graden, 93, of Two Harbors, died Friday, July 8, 2011, at Ecumen Scenic Shores in Two Harbors.

She was born Jan. 20, 1918, to John and Anna (Luukkanen) Tomberg in Two Harbors, where she was a lifelong resident.

Fanny was a homemaker through the years and assisted her husband, Roy, in the operation of a lock business. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Fanny and Roy enjoyed car rides, with coffee and picnics along the way, and fishing.

She is preceded in death by parents; her husband, Roy, in 1991; and brothers, Walter and Henry “Hank” Tomberg.

She is survived by a son, Don (Gerry) Graden; grandchildren, Lori (Mitch) Ekstrom and Steve (Kim) Graden; and four great-grandchildren, Kerissa and Sean Graden and Paige and Marin Ekstrom, all of Two Harbors; and sisters, Sylvia Magnuson of Fullerton, Calif., and Ina Wheeler of Lemon Grove, Calif.

There was a service Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Two Harbors. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery.

Reagan D. Russell
Reagan D. Russell, 14 months, of Beaver Bay, died Monday in a tragic accident in Grand Marais.

He was born May 1, 2010, to Mark and Deborah (Hecker) Russell in Duluth. Reagan loved being outside, steering wheels, and playing the drums.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Clark David Russell.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brothers, Grant and Mark IV “Chip”; sisters, Jenessa, Jocelyn, Kayla, and Sabrina; grandparents, David and Johanna Hecker, and Mark and Diana Russell; great-grandmother, Dorothy Tiethoff; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

There was a visitation (6-8 p.m.) Thursday at the Bay Area Vineyard Church in Silver Bay that will continue at 10 a.m. today followed by an 11 a.m. at the Mary MacDonald Center in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Beaver Bay Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, can be sent to a fund set up in Reagan’s memory at North Shore Federal Credit Union.

Edwin H. Sundvick
Edwin H. Sundvick, 84, of Finland, died Sunday July10, 2011, at St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth.

He was born Feb. 6, 1927, to Gust and Mina Sundvick in Shaw, where he grew up, attending school in Cotton. He served in the U. S. Army from 1947 to 1949 before moving to Finland.

He was employed as a laborer for rock drilling companies for 20 years and also operated a salvage business for many years.

Ed was proud of being a veteran and enjoyed the past three years spent at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia, in 1999; three brothers, Clarence, Theodore and Elmer; and a sister, Hildur Ledeen.

He is survived by a son, Wayne (Bonnie) Sundvick of Finland; two grandchildren, Ryan and Stacy; and seven great-grandchildren.

There was a graveside service Wednesday at Crystal Bay Cemetery in Finland.

Mamie Eleanor Globokar
Mamie Eleanor Globokar, 94, SERVICES: A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John’s Catholic Church in Biwabik. The Rev. Frank Perkovich will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday with 4:30 p.m. parish prayers in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Mamie Eleanor Globokar, 94, of Biwabik, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in the Virginia Convalescent Care Center, where she had been a resident for the past 11 and a half years.

She was born Oct. 14, 1909, in Florenton, Minn., to Matt Sarkela and Evelina (Liimatta) Sarkela-Heikkila. She was happily married for 57 years to Rudolph A. Globokar, who preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1990.

Mamie was an avid reader throughout most of her life and especially loved poetry. She committed to memory a wide range of favorite poems which she readily recited to her friends and visitors. Mamie was strong in faith and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Biwabik.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Mamie is survived by her daughter, Lois Ann (Jim) Adamson of Green Bay, Wis.; son, Rudy (Rozara) Globokar of S. Ogden, Utah; grandchildren, Jean (Tom) Theisen of Sun Prairie, Wis., Nancy (Christopher) Reuter of Beaconsfield, England, Mary Lynn (Philip) Miscimarra of Hinsdale, Ill., Jim Globokar of Ogden, Utah, Linda (Dean) Beus of Layton, Utah, and Lee (Kim) Globokar of Ogden, Utah; 10 great-grandchildren, Steven and Laura Theisen, Anne, Nathaniel and Matthew Reuter, Andrew, Joseph and Eric Miscimarra, and Rachel and Ryan Beus; sister-in-law, Lola Heikkila; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lillian Kochaver, Rose Reed, and Esther Armstrong; half-brother, Albert Heikkila; grandson, John Globokar; and daughter-in-law, Judy Globokar.
