Kenneth J. Dufault
Kenneth J. Dufault, 71, of Beaver Bay, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

Kenny was born on February 15, 1940, to Joseph and Clarice (Boivert) Dufault in Lambert Township, Minn. He enlisted in the Marines and served overseas for three years. He returned home and married Beverly Hollom, and they moved to Silver Bay. Kenny worked in the concentrator at Reserve Mining for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He then worked as a custodian for William Kelley High School and enjoyed working at the sawmill and doing cement work. Kenny was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Beaver Bay Volunteer Fire Department and the VFW. He enjoyed playing cribbage, pool, crossword puzzles, sitting in the sun, and spending time with friends and family.

Kenny is preceded in death by his parents; wife Beverly; brothers, Alphie, George, and Raymond; and sisters, Eleanor, Denage, and Lorraine.

He is survived by his daughter, Tonja (Craig) Fultz; son Joe (Gina) Dufault; son-in-law, Dennis Fultz; grandchildren, Tyson, Marissa, and Tanner; sisters, Helen (Louie) Pfeffer, Teri Chmielewski, Bernice Spacek, and Antoinette (Roland) Varin; brothers, Jerome (Mary) Dufault, Lawrence (Madeline) Dufault, and Willard (Irene) Langlois; great-granddaughter, Eva Foltz, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was from noon until the 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Beaver Bay Cemetery.

Ellen Moore Anderson
Ellen Moore Anderson, 82, also known as Wash–teh Han-yeh-tu-wih (Good Moon), died peacefully on December 11, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Ginny and Rick Green, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, surrounded by the family who loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Robert P. Anderson; her children, Leslie Moore, Ginny Green, Anne West, Scott Moore, Brad Moore, Warren Moore, and Ted Moore, and their spouses; Bob Anderson’s children, Deborah Fischer, Joanne Wittlief, Nancy Lynch and Rick Anderson, and their spouses; her brother, John Mielke, and her sister, Lois Plekenpol, and their spouses; many, many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and her former husband, Russell Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Beulah Mielke, and by her brother, Bill Mielke.

At Ellen’s request, we will be holding a memorial service in celebration of her life, in Two Harbors, Minnesota, on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, the date of the Summer Solstice. Per her wishes, Ellen’s ashes will be scattered on Lake Superior at that time. The family will communicate details about the time and location of the celebration at a later date.

We will remember our wife, mother and grandmother as a loving companion to Bob; as an adventurer, an Antarctic traveler, a canoeist and a cyclist; as a Rotarian, a philanthropist and an organizer of festivals; as a teacher, a musician, a painter, an author, a friend and a storyteller; and, under all of that, as a good mother. We say farewell to her, calling on the words that she used to begin the stories she told to her grandchildren: “Once upon a time, not in my time, not in your time, but in someone’s time. . . .” With much love, we say, “Good night, Good Moon.”

April M. Boney
April M. Boney, 28, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Nett Lake School. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the school. The Rev. Kevin Lasley and the Rev. Wally Olson will be the officiants. Interment will be in the Nett Lake Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

April M. Boney, 28, of Cook, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Cook Hospital, as the result of injuries sustained in a automobile accident.

She was born on Feb. 5, 1976, at Littlefork, Minn, the daughter of Keith Morrison and Judy Boney. She grew up in Nett Lake, moved to Silverdale in 1986, and graduated from Orr High School in 1994. April had lived in Virginia and Britt for several years and has resided in Cook the past four years. She was a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibewe, and was employed at the Fortune Bay Casino complex for 6 years. She was a member of the pool league, and most important to her was time spent with family.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Judy and Ed Jacka of Virginia; her significant other, Mickey Gustafson of Cook; her two children, Elliot Boney and Alexis Gustafson, both of Cook; maternal grandmother, Mary Lou Boney of Nett Lake, and paternal grandmother, Marjorie Boness of Grand Rapids; and one sister, Shawna Boney of St. Paul; along with numerous cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Keith Morrison in 1978; her paternal grandfather Joseph Morrison on March 12, 2004; and maternal grandfather, Peter Boney Sr. in 1984.

Dolores Marie DeCaire
Dolores Marie DeCaire, 73, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. David Forsman will celebrate the mass. Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

Dolores Marie DeCaire, 73, of Aurora, died Monday, May 31, 2004, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

She was born July 26, 1930, in Black River Falls, Wis. to Thomas and Claire Jane (Begin) Lusian. She attended Central High School in Duluth and later married John E. DeCaire Sr. on April 6, 1948, in Good Shepherd Church in Duluth. Dolores worked in the kitchen at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth and as a telephone operator for AT&T. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis. in 1951 and Dolores worked for Gimbels-Shuster Stores as a clerk until 1966. She returned to working for the telephone company and remained there until her retirement in 1986.

Following retirement they made their home in Aurora where she was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, its guild and served as the coordinator for the adoration scheduled the past three years. She was active with the Our Lady Rosary makers since 1976. She enjoyed gardening in the summer months and crocheting during the winter.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia McFarland of Aurora; son, John E. (Jackie) DeCaire Jr. of Greenfield, Wis.; brother, Raymond (Dorothy) Lusian of Perris, Calif.; grandchildren, William (Diane), Timothy (Kris), Melissa (Carl), Mark (Bekki), John III (Gina), Gregory, Nicholas and Scott; six great-grandchildren, Nicole, Bradley, Cody, Chance, Cage and John E.; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John E. Sr.; sisters, Betty and Denise.

Ruth I. Petrell
Ruth I. Petrell, 88, SERVICES: Visitation will be one hour prior to the 1 p.m. private family service Thursday at Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with Pastor Jeffrey Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Embarrass Cemetery.

Ruth I. Petrell, 88, formerly of Embarrass, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at the Arrowhead Senior Living Center in Eveleth.

She was born Oct. 20, 1915, to Henry and Siiri (Levander) Petrell in Chisholm. She moved to Chicago at a young age, where she attended school. During the Depression years she moved to Embarrass and Virginia. She enjoyed doing needlework and painting.

Survivors include her sisters, Milma Naeseth of Madison, Wis., and Olivia Kissin of Spokane, Wash.; brothers, Philip (Donna) Petrell of Hudson, Wis., Wilfred (Ursala) Petrell of Embarrass and Edgar Petrell of Embarrass; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Martha and Helen; and a brother, Roy.

Nelma J. Soyring
Nelma J. Soyring, 84, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Daniel Johns will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and continue one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the United in Christ Lutheran Church Building Fund. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Nelma J. Soyring, 84, of Eveleth, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Nursing Care Center.

She was born March 13, 1920, to Herman and Hanna (Latvaaho) Rajala in Eveleth. She grew up in Leonidas and graduated from Eveleth High School. She was united in marriage to William Ernest Soyring on Aug. 3, 1942. They raised five children on a farm in the Wolf area. She worked for a time sewing at the Eveleth Shirt Factory. She was a member of United in Christ Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies Circle and taught Sunday school. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Mesaba Range Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1172 of Eveleth, serving as chaplain for several years. Her hobbies included sewing, making quilts, knitting, crocheting, gardening and baking for her family.

Survivors include four sons, Rodney (Carol) Soyring of Fergus Falls, Leroy (Margaret) Soyring of Mountain Iron, Donald (Judy) Soyring of Tony, Wis., Bruce (Sue) Soyring of Elmer, N.J.; five grandchildren, Alyce (Curt) Christopherson, Kari Soyring, Jason (Jennifer) Soyring, Mariah Soyring, Joanna Soyring; two great-grandchildren, Kiira Christopherson, Brody Soyring; several stepgrandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren; brother, Melvin (Laurene) Rajala of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two nieces; one nephew; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Ernest, on Jan. 24, 1963; and a son, Kenneth, on Dec. 12, 1960.

Dominic Scipioni
Dominic Scipioni, 88, Dominic Scipioni, 88, died peaceably Saturday, May 15, 2004, at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif.

He was born May 26, 1915, in Virginia, to Giuseppi and Domenica (Mariucci) Scipioni. He grew up on several “Locations,” attended the Virginia schools, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1933. He married Gloria Ann Minnetti in 1941, and they moved to Santa Monica, Calif., to make their home. He worked for Douglas Aircraft and served in the U.S. Navy through World War II. After the war, he worked for several construction firms and retired in 1987. He had an active life even in retirement. He was a devoted husband and father who selflessly gave of himself to family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Loretta (Jim) Monaco; sons, Robert (Charlotte) Scipioni, Vincent (Sonia) Scipioni; grandchildren, Annemarie Scipioni, Gloria Scipioni, Maria Karr, and John Monaco; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, and Dominic Karr, David and Michael Monaco; brother, Bruno Scipioni.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Gloria Ann (Minnetti) Scipioni; and brothers, Premo and Louis Scipioni.

Anton A. Lutwinko
Anton A. Lutwinko, 44, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at the Landmark Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, with the Rev. Jon Wild as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Anton A. Lutwinko, 44, of Bemidji, died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 30, 2004, in Hibbing.

He was born Nov. 2, 1959, in Chisholm, to Anton and Shirley (Borgert) Lutwinko and lived there until the family moved to Idaho in 1964. The family returned to Chisholm in 1975. Anton graduated from the Chisholm High School in 1978 and also from the Eveleth Vocational School. Anton was a U.S. Navy veteran and had been a Bemidji resident since 1994. He was a graduate of Bemidji State University and was working on a Master’s Degree at Bemidji State. He was employed as a counselor in the health care field.

He is survived by one son, Matthew Heaton of Hibbing; his mother, Shirley A. Carson of Chisholm; two brothers, Clifford (Renee) Lutwinko, and Charles (fiancee Stacy) Carson, both of Chisholm; three sisters, Cheryl (Don) Lindquist of Mountain Iron, Meadow (Dave) Duncan of Hibbing, and Kimberly MedCalf of Rexberg, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane; his father, Anton Lutwinko.

Albert Frank Shober
Albert Frank Shober, 69, SERVICES: A memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. The Rev. James Scheuer will officiate. Albert Frank Shober, 69, of Maple Grove, Minn., died Friday, May 28, 2004, in Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, Minn.

He was a lifelong resident of Ely until he moved to Maple Grove three years ago. He was born in Ely on Oct. 23, 1934, to Frank and Elsie (Harri) Shober. Albert was a member of the Knights of Columbus and had worked at Reserve Mining and LTV Mining Co. as a heavy machine mechanic for almost 30 years. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, and listening to polka music. He was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish, and target shoot. He had an avid interest in gun collecting.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Rose Marie Shober; children, Cynthia Shober, Cathleen (Krist) Shelstad, Albert John (Sherri) Shober, Carrie Shober, and Daniel (Linda) Shober; grandchildren, Sarah Josephine Seelye, Alyssa Marie Shelstad, Abigail Rose Shelstad, Brittany Kay Shober, Brianna Marie Shober, Baillie Nicole Shober, Aaron Albert Shober, Andrew Roy Shober, and Olivia Josephine Shober; brother, Raymond (Mary Ann) Shober; sister, Marlene (Ronald) Skube; aunt, Molly Velcheff; one nephew; several nieces.

Julia J. Bezek
Julia J. Bezek, 80, SERVICES: Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia with the Rev. Fr. John O’Donnell as celebrant. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 until 7 p.m., with a 6 p.m. parish rosary, at the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia and will continue from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Biwabik. Memorials are preferred to the Virginia Public Library periodicals.

Julia J. Bezek, 80, of Virginia died Thursday, June 10, 2004, in the Hospice Unit at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1923, to John and Mary (Segan) Skalko in Sparta Location and grew up there. Julia was the seventh of 12 children and graduated from the Gilbert High School in 1941. Julia married Stanley J. Bezek of Pineville on Aug. 8, 1946. She raised two children, Stan and Jan. She was dedicated, hardworking, and busy as a wife, mother and grandmother. She lived a simple life and wanted only to be remembered for the legacy she left, her nine grandchildren of whom she was extremely proud.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Stanley; son, Stanley (Carrie) Bezek of Virginia; daughter, Janice (Steve) Malin of Fond du Lac, Wis.; grandchildren, Sarah Bezek of El Paso, Texas, Sam Bezek of Washington, D.C., Maggie Bezek of New Orleans, La., Emily Bezek of Minneapolis, and Hannah and Molly Bezek of Virginia, Andy (Mary Edith) Malin of Boston, Joe Malin of Minneapolis and Anna Malin of Duluth; brothers, Mike (Francis) Skalko, Matt Skalko, Dan (Francis) Skalko, Steve (Helen) Skalko, Bill Skalko, John (Luverne) Skalko and Ed (Marion) Skalko; sisters, Eva (Bill) Holmes and Ellen (John) Drobnick; and sister-in-law, Janet Skalko.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ann Granroth; brother, Frank Skalko; and sisters-in-law, Lila and Corrine Skalko.

Emma Molly Segar
Emma Molly Segar, 85, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild celebrating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., Monday at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the Mass Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in Chisholm Cemetery. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary casketbearers will be her two sons-in-law and her daughter-in-law and longtime family friend, Joe Franzinelli.

Emma Molly Segar, 85, of Chisholm, died Friday, June 11, 2004, in Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born Nov. 25, 1918, in Chisholm, to Albert and Pierina (Alante) Pelizatto. She was a 1936 graduate of Chisholm High School and was a lifelong Chisholm resident. Emma was united in marriage to James M. Segar on Oct. 14, 1942, in Chisholm. She worked as a bookkeeper for Tusin’s Grocery Store for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm; the Catholic Order of Foresters; The North American Benefit Association; The Women of the Moose — Chisholm Chapter No. 876.

Survivors include her husband, James M.; children, Rosemary (Richard Wayne) Anderson of Little Falls, Minn., Albert (Roberta) Segar of Mankato, Minn., Teresa (Frank) Sikich of Hibbing; grandchildren, Lisa Anderson, Eric (Deb) Anderson, Julie, Chris and Jenny Segar, Tony and Frank Sikich; great-grandchildren, Andre and Nikko Anderson, Bailey, Jared, Jonah and Emma Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frank Pelizatto.

Fred M. Erkkila
Fred M. Erkkila, 90, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Robert Simenson will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and continue one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Sandy Township Cemetery.

Fred. M. Erkkila, 90, of Virginia, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

He was born March 9, 1914, in Sandy Township, to Oscar and Jennie (Nestrom) Erkkila. He grew up and attended school in Sandy Township. He also attended Dunwoody Institute for carpentry. He married Kathleen Haugen on Jan. 3, 1942, in Virginia, where they made their home. He was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He worked as a construction carpenter for various companies on the Iron Range. He was a member of Carpenter’s Local 606, Crellin-Tini VFW Post 1113 and Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Fred is survived by four sons, Frederick (Dana) Erkkila of Orr, Roderick (Mary) Erkkila of Wyoming, Minn., Kendrick of Virginia, and Eric (Nancy) Erkkila of Duluth; one daughter, Kathleen (Fred) Gabrielson of Myrtle Lake, Minn.; five grandchildren, Linda, Kirsten, Meghan, Laura and Fred; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Oscar Erkkila of Britt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; parents; and sisters, Edna and Sylvia.

Vernon L. Lilienthal

Vernon L. Lilienthal, 69, of Embarrass, died Monday, June 11, 2004, in Virginia.

He was born May 20, 1935, in Brook Park, Minn., to Amos “Jack” and Alice (Sorg) Lilienthal. He attended Hinckley High School. Vernon married Dorothy Lillian Felten on Sept. 3, 1955, in Pine City, Minn. The couple moved to Embarrass in 1966.

Vernon retired from Reserve Mining Company and North Shore Mining Company. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Lori and Tracey Lilienthal, both of Embarrass; three brothers, Philip (Phyllis) Lilienthal of Henriette, Minn., Rodney (Dorothy) Lilienthal of Silver City, Mont., and Ronald (Meride) Lilienthal of Snohomish, Wash.; six sisters, Karen (Gary) Steiner of Brook Park, Minn., Cheryl (Al) Potter of Clyde Park, Mont., Joyce (Don) Cline of Kansas City, Kan., Bonnie Brown of Mont., Judy Parker of Kirkland, Wash., and Vicky (Richard) Wirtz of Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his father; and brother, Lenny.
