Arthur E. Dunstan, 57, SERVICES: Services will be held on Friday at St. Joseph’s Chapel in Alto, N.M. Arrangements are by the Lagrone Funeral Home in Alto.

Arthur Ernest “Skipper” Dunstan, 57, of Alto, N.M., died unexpectedly Monday, June 14, 2004, at home.

He was born March 14, 1947, in Ely, to Ernest and Ina (Hautala) Dunstan. He graduated from Ely High School in 1965 and from Brown University in 1969. He received a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. He worked for Ford Motor Company and Lear Design Corporation.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Katharine; father-in-law, Robert Finley of Alto; sisters, Bonnie (Jack) Swanson of Silver Bay; Mary Beth (Tom) Witherow of Remer; brothers, James (Connie) Dunstan of Virginia, Richard (Desiree) Dunstan of Ely; numerous nieces and nephews; aunt, Elna Hautala of Ely; and uncle, John A. Smrekar of Duluth.

Violet M. Kangas
Violet M. Kangas, 83, SERVICES: Violet will be cremated and her remains will be taken to Roma, Australia for services and burial. Her family prefers no memorials. Services are by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Violet M. Kangas, 83, of Duluth, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Bayshore Health Center.

She was born Dec. 16, 1920, in Roma, Queensland, Australia. She worked for Bell Telephone for 12 years. Violet loved people and loved to travel.

Violet is survived by her husband, Clarence; sisters, Judy and Nora; and a brother, Edger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Willie, Walter and Norman.

Anthony Alementi
Anthony Alementi, 87, SERVICES: A visitation for Tony will be held from 10:30 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia. Anthony “Tony” Alementi, age 87 and lifelong resident of Virginia, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Virginia, the son of Aristo and Emelia (Zamban) Alementi. Tony graduated from Virginia High School in 1937, and was united in marriage to Florence M. Sagrifina on Nov. 29, 1941. He served our country in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, working in the mines in Colorado during World War II. He worked at U.S. Steel for over 40 years, and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Italian American Club in Virginia, and the Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post #239 in Virginia.

He is survived by his son, Roger (Kathy) Alementi of Duluth; grandchildren, Christine (Eric) Alementi-Olson and Brian (Cheryl) Alementi, all of Minneapolis; stepgrandchildren, Scott Damkroeger of Minneapolis and Mark Damkroeger of Las Vegas; great-grandchild, Hayden Olson of Minneapolis; sister, Theresa Innarelli of Milwaukee; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Florence in 1998; son, David Anthony in 1963; and two sisters, Connie and Rena.

Gladys Mary Holmes

Gladys Mary (Carey) Holmes, age 93 of Virginia, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

She was born on Sept. 19, 1910, in Eveleth, to Charles and Adele (Salmi) Carey. She grew up and attended school in Eveleth and Gilbert. She was an area resident for most of her life. Gladys was united in marriage to Hilmer Holmes on Nov. 12, 1928, in Duluth. After living in Duluth, Minneapolis, and Ft. Bragg, Calif., they made their home in Hutter and later in Gilbert where Hilmer owned and worked in his barber shop. She had worked as a seamstress at the former Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory in Gilbert. She was a member of the former Northland Bible Church. Gladys was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include one son, William (Eva) Holmes of Lake City; grandsons Mike, Guy, and Bill; granddaughter, Kellie; one daughter, Karen (Jack) Lakso of Bigfork; grandsons, Jeff and Scott; granddaughter, Kerrie; several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn (Russell) Hill of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilmer in 1978; a stillborn daughter, Linda in 1949; her parents; and brothers, Ted, Herbert, Clarence, and Bernard Carey.

Emmelaine L. Liesmaki
Emmelaine L. Liesmaki, 81, SERVICES: Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Cherry Cemetery in Cherry. Rev. Erik R. Holleque will officiate.

Emmelaine L. Liesmaki, 81, of Hibbing died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

Emmelaine was born on Nov. 14, 1922, to Gullak and Hannah (Johnsrud) Fosso in Bear River, Minn. She grew up in Bear River and attended schools in Alango and Cook. She lived in Cherry for a time and worked as a nurse’s aide and an inhalation therapist at the Hibbing General Hospital. She moved to Deer River where she owned and operated the Willow Beach Supper Club. She lived in Auburn, Wash., for 12 years and served as a den mother for handicapped adults. She moved to Hibbing in the late 1980s, where she was a member of the Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathie Novak of Pillager, Minn., Wendy Rotness of Hibbing and Crystal (Red Russell) Villeneuve of Hibbing; two sons, Glenn (Kathy) Liesmaki of Cherry and Stan (Kathe) Liesmaki of Chisholm; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sam; two daughters, Prissicila Liesmaki and Sherry Macho; and two granddaughters, Julie Ann Erickson and Pauline Villeneuve.

Vernon L. Lilienthal

Vernon L. Lilienthal, 69, of Embarrass, died Monday, June 14, 2004, in Virginia.

He was born May 20, 1935, in Brook Park, Minn., to Amos “Jack” and Alice (Sorg) Lilienthal. He attended Hinckley High School. Vernon married Dorothy Lillian Felten on Sept. 3, 1955, in Pine City, Minn. The couple moved to Embarrass in 1966.

Vernon retired from Reserve Mining Company and North Shore Mining Company. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Lori and Tracey Lilienthal, both of Embarrass; mother, Alice; three brothers, Philip (Phyllis) Lilienthal of Henriette, Minn., Rodney (Dorothy) Lilienthal of Silver City, Mont., and Ronald (Meride) Lilienthal of Snohomish, Wash.; six sisters, Karen (Gary) Steiner of Brook Park, Minn., Cheryl (Al) Potter of Clyde Park, Mont., Joyce (Don) Cline of Kansas City, Kan., Bonnie Brown of Mont., Judy Parker of Kirkland, Wash., and Vicky (Richard) Wirtz of Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his father; and brother, Lenny.

Dr. Wesley C. Peterson, 77, of Virginia passed away with family by his side on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

James W. “Jimmy” Pete

James W. “Jimmy” Pete, 82, of Ely, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Ely to Jacob L. and Selma A. (Wilman) Pete. He was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. During World War II he served with the Army Air Corps. He married Helen Martin on Sept. 28, 1941, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He spent his entire life in the Ely area. He managed the logging camp and sawmill business for his father and was in partnership with his father, Jake, in “Pete’s Cabin Boats” on Basswood Lake. He owned Pete’s Wilderness Trails on Jackfish Bay, Basswood.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; son, Leonard C. Pete; daughter, Gail (Thomas) Carlson, both of Ely; grandchildren, Adena (David) Stone of Virginia and Pete Carlson of Embarrass; sister, Gloria M. Campbell of Edwards, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leonard G. Pete; a nephew, Russell Hayes.

Gerald Barich

Gerald Barich, 81, of Ely died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in Duluth.

He was born Dec. 9, 1922, to Steve and Dorothy (Neff) Barich in Ely.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Celine; two children, Dennis Barich of Minneapolis and Deborah (Clay) Worthly of Maynardville, Tenn.; a grandson, Bryan McGowan, of Shakopee; a great-grandson, Jordan McGowan; and two sisters, Shirley Rothman and Dorothy Pickett, both of Ely.

Albertus Daniel Vaneps
Albertus Daniel Vaneps, 91, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held in Minnesota at a later date.

Albertus (Bert) Daniel Vaneps, 91, of Merriam Woods, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at his home.

He was born March 6, 1913, in Grand Rapids to Hiram and Addie Daniels Vaneps. He marrie dEdna Mae on July 22, 1978, in Frand Rapids. He was a heavy equipment operator for an iron ore refinery.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Mae; a son, Donald Vaneps, of Minnesota; two daughters, Auidrey Crist and Mary Alice Lynch, both of California; a brother, Roger Vaneps, of Arizona; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robert and Raymond Vaneps; and two brothers, Marcell and Louis Vaneps.

Robert W.A. Malander
Robert W.A. Malander, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service 11 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church, 2415 Ensign St., Duluth, with the Rev. Michael Main officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Robert William August Malander, 72, of Duluth died Monday, June 14, 2004, in Viewcrest Nursing Home of complications with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born March 10, 1932, to Charles and Lulu (Kangas) Malander of Tower. He graduated from Embarrass High School in 1950, was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth and later received his master’s degree in education at UMD. He was a teacher at Cotton, Clover Valley, Orr and AlBrook, a principal at Toivola Meadowlands and at AlBrook, where he retired. He served as the secondary supervisor of St. Louis County Schools and as interim superintendent. Robert coached baseball and track, taught gun safety and was a Boy Scout leader. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his hunting shack in Tower.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Diane (Wiedenhoft) Malander; son, Mark (Loretta) Malander; daughters, Susan (Brian) Hohnson, Lynn (Mike) Moseley, Lori (Roy) Stankiewicz and Nancy (Steve) Eggleston; grandchildren, Ben, Zach, Nick, Sarah, Aaron, Patrick, Peter, Matt, Sam, Michael, Ashlee, Andrea, Claire and Joey; great-grandson, Gage; his best friend, Esko Jokinen; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Vernon.

Andrew Chesler
Andrew Chesler, 97, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Monday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, with the Rev. Frank Perkovich officiating. Andrew Chesler, 97, a longtime resident of Eveleth, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Autumn Adult Foster Care Home in Angora.

He was born Sept. 16, 1906, in Visau, Poland, the son of George and Mary (Belan) Cieslar. Andrew married Leona M. Croteau on Oct. 10, 1925, in Eveleth. He worked as a brakeman for U.S. Steel's Oliver Mining Co. and was a member of the Steelworkers Union. Andrew was a hardworking man who cherished the time spent with his family. He enjoyed playing the concertina, and loved having his grandkids crawl up on his lap and sing to them in Polish.

He is survived by his children, Lee (Joyce) Chesler of Andover, Minn., David (Shirley) Chesler of Mora, Arlene (Jerome) Gwash of Virginia and Elaine (John) Postudensek of Babbitt; 21 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 77 years, Leona, on May 26, 2003, son, James, and a baby in infancy, Edmund; two grandsons, two great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul and Albert; and sisters, Mary, Anna, Emma and Harriet.

John J. Pustovar
John J. Pustovar, 61, SERVICES: Funeral 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, in the Blessed Sacrament Side Lake Chapel, with the Rev. Lloyd Mudrak officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service at the chapel. John J. Pustovar, 61, of Side Lake died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Banner Gardens Hospice House, Mesa, Ariz.

He was born in Chisholm Oct. 14, 1942, to John A. and Perena E. (Martini) Pustovar. He graduated from Chisholm High School, Hibbing Community College, Denver University and received his master’s degree from Bemidji State University.

He delivered the Duluth paper for years. He gave accordion lessons for LiaBraaten Accordion Center. He was a music instructor at Pequot Lakes, Martin Hughes High School in Buhl and Mountain Iron-Buhl High School in Mountain Iron. He owned and operated J&L Grocery in Chisholm for 17 years and J&L Crafts in Side Lake for eight years.

He was an Eagle Scout. He was a former member of the Buhl Curling Club and Hibbing Elks Club and was a member of the teachers’ union. He was honored in the third edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He was a member of the Buhl Knights of Columbus. He was a grateful member of AA for 20 years. His hobbies were hunting and fishing. He enjoyed his wood cutting and listening to the polka party. He loved music of all kinds. He followed all sports and liked gardening and his fruit trees. He enjoyed his winters in Mesa, Ariz., and his summers at Side Lake.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda (McCarthy); children, Joseph John (Sheila) of Faribault, Minn., Peter James of Orlando, Fla., and Mark Thomas of Chisholm; his father, John A., of Hibbing; two brothers, Paul (Carole) of Hibbing and Tom (Monica) of Duluth; and a granddaughter, Breanna Lees.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Perena Pustovar.
