David A. Anderson
David A. Anderson, 78, SERVICES: Memorial service noon Saturday at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 2410 Stillwater Ave., Maplewood. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Dr. David A. Anderson, 78, of St. Paul died peacefully at his home Wednesday, June 23, 2004.

He was born in Virginia on Nov.15, 1926. Dr. Anderson practiced dentistry at Sun Ray Dental for nearly 40 years. His son, Dr. Karl Anderson, D.D.S., continues to practice at 1815 Suburban Ave. Dr. David Anderson was a member of the Masonic Lodge in St. Paul, the Republican Party, and the National Rifle Association. He continued to hunt and fish through the years upon the Mesabi Range near Virginia and Lake Vermilion. He had suffered from COPD for several years but never allowed his disability to limit his activities.

He is survived by his spouse, Audrey; son, Karl; daughters, Karrie (Singh), Joan (Nystrom) and Jeanette (Imberg); sister, June (Nath), of Trinidad, West Indies; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene, Orlo, Karl and Knute.

Joseph W. Sigurnjak
Joseph W. Sigurnjak, 80, SERVICES: Private family inurnment services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Joseph W. Sigurnjak, 80, of Hibbing and formerly of Buhl, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in Leisure Hills Health Care Center in Hibbing.

He was born June 9, 1924, in Buhl to Eli and Ann (Rossman) Sigurnjak. He attended Buhl Schools and was a lifelong resident of Buhl prior to entering Hillcrest Adams, Golden Crest and Leisure Hills since 1997. Joe worked as a track laborer for U.S. Steel’s Minntac plant for more than 20 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl.

Survivors include his uncle, Adam Rossman, of Virginia; aunt, Rose Walker, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Inga Taipale
Inga Taipale, 94, SERVICES: Memorial service 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Virginia.

Inga Taipale, 94, of Anoka, Minn., and a longtime resident of Virginia, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, in Anoka.

She was born Feb. 27, 1910, in Virginia to Staale and Anna Marie (Syverson) Abrahamson. She lived in Virginia almost her whole life, and she spent her last three years in the Anoka area. She was a retired secretary for the federal housing administration.

She was preceded in death her husband, Elmer; brother, Peter Abrahamson; and two sisters, Ann Jensen and Sarah Abrahamson.

Josephine Anne Statler
Josephine Anne Statler, 74, SERVICES: A celebration of JoAnn’s life will be held at her home on Sunday, July 4, 2004, at 2 p.m. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Josephine Anne “JoAnn’’ Statler, 74, of Britt died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

She was born May 16, 1930, in Wis., growing up in Minneapolis. She was a member of the North American Lionhead Rabbit Club, American Rabbit Breeders Association, American Netherland Dwarf Rabbit Club, Minnesota State Rabbit Breeders Association, Iron Range Dog Training Club, where she was past president and a member for 25 years. JoAnn was also a member of the St. Louis County Fair Association. She was a horse enthusiast her entire life, exhibiting and enjoying registered horses. JoAnn enjoyed teaching young people the art of riding. She spent many years doing obedience with her beagle. JoAnn continued showing and titling many dogs, where she finished many champions in breed class also. During her later years, JoAnn became very involved with rabbits, importing the first Lionheads in the United States and promoting their acceptance among rabbit enthusiasts. JoAnn worked at Northwest Bank in Minneapolis for 25 years and later at Madden’s Resort in Brainerd and Grooming by Jane in Virginia.

Survivors include her lifelong friend, Jean Jasinsky; close friend, Sandy Koehler; and many dear and loving friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vern and Fanchon (Roberts) Statler; and a sister, Marilyn.

Charles Dunn, Sr.
Charles Dunn, Sr., 82, SERVICES: A private family memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel in Hibbing. Rev. Father Peter Muhich will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Forbes Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Hibbing. Family services provided by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Hibbing. Charles Dunn, Sr., 82, of Hibbing died Thursday, June 24, 2004, in Hibbing.

He was born March 30, 1922, in Farina, Ill., the son of Charles and Lula (Greer) Dunn. He attended school in Illinois. On Jan. 18, 1939, he married Pauline Thompson. He was employed as a mining foreman for Pacific Isle (washing plant) and also worked construction for Coon Bros. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II serving in Japan and was a member of VFW Post 8510.

Survivors include his children, Virginia (Jon) Dolence, Betty (Robert) Bernard, Charles Dunn Jr., Doris (John) Winterbottom, Gene (Cheryl) Dunn, Dean (Sheryl) Dunn and Charlene Dunn; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Pauline in 2002.

Marguerite Coffin
Marguerite Coffin, 76, SERVICES: Services were held at Palm Springs Mortuary in Cathedral City, Calif. Memorials are preferred to the Braille Institute in Rancho Mirage or the American Diabetes Association.

Marguerite “Peggy” Coffin, 76, of Palm Desert, died June 19, 2004, in Palm Springs, Calif.

She was born Nov. 2, 1927, to Emerson D. and Marguerite McNeil in Virginia. She married George M. Coffin on May 27, 1950, in Duluth. Marguerite was a teacher in the Coachella Valley for 30 years. A member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she also taught Sunday school for more than 25 years.

Marguerite is survived by her husband, George M. Coffin of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; three daughters, Marguerite “Margie” Black and Marilyn Zemek of Palm Desert, and Georgia Duffy of Rancho Mirage; her son, Greggory Coffin of Cathedral City; sister, Cathy Seaquist of Duluth; brother, Charles McNeil of Minneapolis; her mother, Marguerite “Gidge” McNeil; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Geoffrey McNeil Coffin.

Evelyn I. Kegley

Evelyn I. Kegley, 71, of Virginia, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Otter Tail County, Minn., to Orris and Elizabeth (Person) McCollum.

Evelyn is survived by her sisters, Viola (Doran) Marlette of Jeffers, Minn., and Marion Zimmerman; brothers, Donald Pilgrim and Delmer Dale McCollum; step-sister, Joyce Weckworth of Arlington, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ida, in infancy; and a brother, Clifford.

Ruth M. Phillips
Ruth M. Phillips, 92, SERVICES: Ruth’s family invites you at 11 a.m. Monday to celebrate that she will go on to “live just the same’’ in services at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Eamonn Boland and the Rev. Charles Flynn will officiate. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Arrangements are by the Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Ruth Meyers Phillips, 92, of Eveleth died Thursday, July 15, 2004, surrounded by her doctor, priest, family and friends.

Ruth lived the final years of her life at her daughter’s home in Duluth, which was built the same year Ruth was born in 1912. Her uncle, Edwin Johnson, paid for her education as a medical technician and allowed her to live upstairs of the Johnson Mortuary in Duluth while she trained at St. Mary’s Hospital. She worked as a medical technician at the Eveleth Moore Hospital, eventually marrying her high school sweetheart, Samuel Bailey Phillips, who was the second American to sign up to play professional hockey. Together they started various businesses, including a cabin camp on Half Moon Lake outside of Eveleth, where they eventually built what is now their family home next to the Moore estate. Sam went on to purchase various gas stations, and with his brother, Raymond, had Chrysler and Dodge car dealerships on the Iron Range. Ruth was an accomplished violinist and loved dances at the Makinen Hall well into her eighties and traveling with her grandson.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Phillips; grandson, Douglas Samuel LoPinto and son-in-law, Tony LoPinto; nephews, Robert Rowe of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Dennis Rowe of Clearwater, Fla.; and great-nephews and great-nieces.

She is also survived by her wit and wisdom in the face of adversity, calling life’s little tragedies “a 10-day wonder,’’ and always saying, “Live just the same.’’

John Gregorich Sr.
John Gregorich Sr., 79, SERVICES: Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. Frank Perkovich as celebrant. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m., in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert, and will continue for one hour prior to service at the church. Burial with military honors accorded by the Gilbert Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in the Gilbert Cemetery.

John Gregorich Sr., 79, of Gilbert died Friday, July 2, 2004, in the Arrowhead Senior Living Community in Eveleth.

He was born May 16, 1925, in Genoa Location to John and Rosa (Bilan) Gregorich. He attended school in Eveleth and later served the country as a World War II Army veteran. He married Betty Mae Creighton on April 20, 1947, in Virginia. John worked for several iron ore mines on the Iron Range during his lifetime. He retired from Pittsburg Pacific as a shovel and crane operator in the early 1980s.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the George and Mark Klobuchar VFW Post of Gilbert and was a former member of the Gilbert Curling Club. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing and especially enjoyed hamburgers and ice cream.

Survivors include his sons, John Jr. (Dawn) of Hoyt Lakes, Daniel of Gilbert, Robert and Joseph, both of Virginia, and William Gregorich of the Wolf area; a daughter, Sharon (Bob) Bianchi, of Eveleth; a brother, Joseph (Ann) Gregorich, of Pittsburg, Calif.; sisters, Anne Pavelich of Ely Lake and Mary Ann “Mitzi” (Walt) Moisio of Hoyt Lakes; grandchildren, Todd, Steven, Matthew and Crystal; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Hannah, Jocelyn and Autumn; special friend, Linda Sniderich; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Mae; and daughter, Jeannie.

Francis L. Jourdain
Francis L. Jourdain, 54, SERVICES: Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth. Visitation will also be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Redby Community Center in Redby, Minn., and continue until the time of services Monday at the Redby Community Church. Interment will be in Redby Community Cemetery. Local arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth.

Francis L. Jourdain, 54, of Eveleth died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 17, 1949, in White Earth, Minn., to Baptiste and Eliza (Kingbird) Jourdain. He grew up in Mountain Iron and had been a longtime resident of Eveleth. Francis retired from Erie Mining Co. He was a Vietnam veteran. He married Shirley E. Fairbanks on July 31, 1981, in Minneapolis, Minn. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a son, Jarad Jourdain of Virginia; daughters, Tara Kurkosky of Annandale, Minn., and Summer (Nehemiah) Mathews of Virginia; a stepdaughter, Mary LaGarde of Minneapolis; his mother, Eliza Jourdain of Virginia; grandchildren, Clay, Helaina, Hayden, Michelle and Madison; brothers, Joseph (Juanita) Jourdain of Minneapolis and Richard Jourdain of Virginia; sisters, Mary Gibbs of Minneapolis, Lucille Auginash and Patsy Morgan, both of Redby, Minn.; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie and Pauline; and his father, Baptiste Jourdain.

Shirley E. Johnson
Shirley E. Johnson, 83, SERVICES: Funeral 10 a.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church in Eveleth, with Pastor Shirley Nelson officiating. Visitation one hour before service. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Shirley E. Johnson, 83, of Eveleth died Friday, July 16, 2004, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

She was born July 20, 1920, to Isaac and Mary (Sterns) Hendrickson. Shirley started nurse’s training after high school in Chicago. During wartime she worked in a shipyard as a welder. She was married to Tom C. Johnson on June 27, 1941, in Eveleth. She worked as a registered nurse for the More Hospital in Eveleth; the Eveleth-Fitzgerald Community Hospital; and the Virginia Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Eveleth; a member of the Degree of Honor; and enjoyed square dancing, baking, learning languages, hiking, walking and traveling. Shirley was a woman full of love and compassion. During her life, she cared for 12 foster children. Her giving spirit touched so many individuals throughout her lifetime.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas M. Johnson (Marsha Olson) and Richard K. Johnson; her daughters, Phyllis M. (Mike) Laukka and Janet A. Johnson; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom, in 1984; an infant daughter, Anne, in 1954; a son, Bruce C. Johnson, in 1994; three brothers; two sisters; and her parents.

Will Mattson Mackinaw
Will Mattson Mackinaw, 7, SERVICES: A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chester Park United Methodist Church in Duluth, 819 N. 18th Ave. E.

Will Mattson Mackinaw, 7, of Fairbanks, Alaska, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Denver Children’s Hospital in Colorado.

He is survived by his parents, Todd and Amy Mackinaw, and his brother, Finn, all of Fairbanks, Alaska; maternal grandparents, Martin and Lois Mattson of St. Louis River and Canyon; paternal grandmother, Barbara Mackinaw of Duluth.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, William Mackinaw; and great-grandmother, Esther Raati of St. Louis River.

Dorothy E. Davis
Dorothy E. Davis, 97, SERVICES: Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Memorials are preferred to Charter House Benevolence Fund, 211 N.W. Second St., Rochester, MN 55901.

Dorothy E. Davis, 97, of Rochester, died Tuesday morning, July 6, 2004, at Charter House in Rochester, Minn.

She was born May 13, 1907, to Fred and Emelia Brooks in Virginia. She graduated from LaCrosse, Wisconsin University in 1927 with a degree in physical education. Dorothy taught gym in Minneapolis, Huron, S.D., and Virginia, until she and Dr. Kermit Davis were married in Virginia. Following their marriage, Dorothy worked with Kermit in his dental office in Virginia. They retired in 1983 and moved to Charter House, as some of the first residents there in 1985. Dorothy was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester. She also was a lifetime member of the Virginia Order of the Eastern Star. Kermit died Aug. 6, 1996.

There are no immediate survivors.
