Gail S. Chad, 59, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Virginia. The Rev. John Cowan and the Rev. Russ Baustian will co-officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. A memorial service will also take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene in Backus, with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery in Backus. Gail S. Chad, 59, of Mountain Iron and formerly of Backus, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at the University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

She was born July 1, 1945, in Pequot Lakes, to Warren and Wanita (Tye) Holden. Gail grew up in Backus and graduated from Backus High School in 1963. She attended Bemidji State College for two years and moved to the Iron Range in 1969. She was united in marriage to Ronald J. Chad in 1970. Gail worked at U.S. Steel for more than 35 years, retiring in 2002. She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Virginia and was the secretary of the Clerical Union 9115.

Gail is survived by her son, Cory Holden of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brothers, Don (Nancy) Holden of Cold Springs, Tom (Donna) Holden of Backus, and Mike (Jenny) Holden of Brainerd; sisters, Marilyn Johnson of Sutherlin, Ore., and Janet (Dale) Skinner of Mountain Iron; sister-in-law, Nickie Holden of International Falls; special friend, Ron Ebert; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ronald, in 1979; brother, Ivan (Ike) Holden; paternal and maternal grandparents; and her father- and mother-in-law, John and Dorothy Chad.

Steve Dubovich
Steve Dubovich, 83, SERVICES: Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Bovey. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Coleraine. Arrangements are by the Peterson Funeral Chapel of Coleraine.

Steve Dubovich, 83, of rural Bovey, died Friday, July 16, 2004, in the Grand Village Nursing Home in Grand Rapids.

He was born Dec. 22, 1920, in Marble, Minn., to George and Rosey (Verbantz) Dubovich. He was a Greenway High School graduate and was a heavy equipment operator for Cleveland Cliffs for 42 years, retiring in 1983. He married Pearle Mattfield on Feb. 13, 1940, in Aitkin, Minn. He was a former member of the Bovey Moose Lodge 1061, a World War II veteran from June 1944 to September 1945, serving in the Aleutian Islands as fire chief aboard a minesweeper.

Steve is survived by his wife, Pearle; sons, Richard (Theresa) Dubovich of Ham Lake, and John (Mary) Dubovich of Grand Rapids; daughters, Jean (Arnold) Nellis of Aurora, Alana (Gene) Nelson of Escandido, Calif., Bernadette (James) Sims of Apple Valley, and Kim (Leroy) Williams of Lakeville, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Siblings include Mike Dubovich of New Jersey, Mayme Dimatteo of Washington, Anne Georgiff of Bovey, George Dubovich of Florida, Dan Dubovich of Marble and Paul Dubovich of Bovey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sadie Elich, Draga Shevich and Mary Plecas; and brothers, Eli, Nick and Sam Dubovich.

Robert Lee Sandys
Robert Lee Sandys, 85, SERVICES: A private family funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. The Rev. Tim Pomp officiated. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery in International Falls.

Robert Lee Sandys, 85, of Gilbert, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, to E.C. and Melba (Milligan) Sandys. He attended school in Cleveland and later married Ruth Johnson on July 16, 1935, in International Falls. He served our country as a U.S. Army veteran. Following the Military, he owned and operated Star Laundry in International Falls for nearly 30 years. In 1976, the family moved to the Iron Range.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church, was an excellent script writer and calligraphy artist and especially enjoyed reading.

Robert is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Alfred (Helen) of Detroit, Mich., Virginia (Jack) McDonnell of Hibbing, Clyde (Maria) of Fridley, Gerald (Jackie) of Hibbing, Ruth (Chris) Nyberg of North Branch and Patricia (Mark) Morin of Gilbert; brother, Paul (Suzie) Sandys of Tucson, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; children, Larry, Robert and Arlene; sister, Wanda; brother, Charles; and grandson, Ralph.

Peter ‘Pete’ Obidowski
Peter ‘Pete’ Obidowski, 84, SERVICES: Visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Burial will be at a later date.

Peter “Pete’’ Obidowski, 84, of Virginia died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

He was born Sept. 28, 1919, to Felix and Sophie (Yuzba) Obidowski at the Minorca Location, Virginia. He grew up and attended school in Virginia. He was a World War II veteran serving with the Army in the South Pacific.

Survivors include a sister, Phylis Townsend, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; a brother, Paul West, of Bakersfield, Calif.; and nephews, Richard (Sue) Obidowski of rural Eveleth, Jim (Connie) Obidowski of Cook and Art (Linda) Obidowski of Stillwater, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Oyen; brothers, Frank and Joe; and a nephew, Gary.

Reno J. Angeloni
Reno J. Angeloni, 76, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. The Rev. Frank Perkovich will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and will continue for one hour before the service on Wednesday. Burial with military honors accorded by the Gilbert Veterans of Foreign Wars Post will be in the Gilbert Cemetery.

Reno J. Angeloni, 76, of Gilbert died Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.

He was born April 20, 1928, in Gilbert to John and Elsie Angeloni. He was a graduate of Gilbert High School and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. On July 28, 1956, he married Beverley Curnow in St. Joseph’s Church in Gilbert. He worked for J & L Mining Company and later for LTV Steel Mining, retiring from there in 1992 as a cost analyst. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and George and Mark Klobuchar Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4456, where he held several offices. Reno was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing the buttonbox and attending family gatherings.

Survivors include his wife, Beverley; children, Deborah (John) Ocepek of Gilbert, Lisa (Curtis) Ocepek of Woodbury, Minn., Greg (Laurie) Angeloni of Aurora and David (Tammy) Angeloni of Virginia; brother, Victor (Alice) Beci of Lockport, Ill.; sisters, Mary Frajola of Marion, Ind., Alda Oven of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Lillian (Rudy) Fadlovich of Woodbury; grandchildren, Derek and Brian Ocepek, Tawnie, Christie, Cody and Jesse Ocepek, Daniel Angeloni, Madelyn Angeloni and Justin Meyer. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Euretta Jane "E.J." Sundberg
Euretta Jane "E.J." Sundberg, 88, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Chisholm, with Pastor Steve Breitbarth officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Euretta Jane "E.J." Sundberg, 88, of Hibbing died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in her daughter's home in Zim.

She was the only child born to William J. "Billy" and Marie Sanderson, pioneers of Hibbing who lived on the DuPont Road and for many years had saddle horses and Shetland ponies. She was a graduate of the Hibbing High School and Junior College and had a lengthy and varied work experience. Upon graduation, E.J. began keeping books for Micka Electric Company, Hibbing, and eventually became the head bookkeeper of the three stores in Hibbing, Chisholm and Virginia.

During World War II, she was the payroll accountant of a 1,000-man payroll for the joint venture of companies constructing a quartermaster depot for the government in California. Following its completion, E.J. was transferred to the office of the prime contractor in San Francisco. While there, she transcribed “specs” for many additions and alterations to Stanford University in Palo Alto.

After returning to Hibbing, E.J. was a comptometer and IBM operator for the Oliver Iron Mining Company at the headquarters office in North Hibbing, compiling figures for the daily production report; later she became the first IBM operator hired at the Erie Taconite Plant (the former LTV), near Aurora. She was retained on the payroll until the office was built and the machines were received and installed. E.J. was the billing and posting clerk for K-B Supply, bookkeeper for Lindberg-Maddision, Welsh & Felton Sign, Shell Tire and others, and did bartending and cocktail waitressing at supper clubs in Hibbing and Chisholm.

She was a former member of the Women of the Moose, the Elks Ladies Klub and the Sacagewea Council of the Degree of Pocahontas. She was a Past Pocahontas and on the state level journal clerk for two years. When she was Pocahontas of the local Sacagewea Council, she conducted an exemplary "perfect meeting" at the state conventions. E.J. was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for nearly 50 years, and was the senior member of four generations in the auxiliary. She served in many capacities, including five times president, district appointments and was 8th District secretary for two years, 1994-96. After the death of her husband, she worked as a word-processing specialist for the St. Louis County Social Service Department in Virginia for 12 years, transferred to the Hibbing office for a short period and retired in 1983. She and her husband, Eugene, loved music and were excellent dancers. E.J. was hospitalized from Feb. 10, 2004, until March 1, 2004, and had been living with her daughter, Barb, ever since.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Dwane) Hemenway, of Zim; two grandsons, Richard Getty of Hibbing and Robert Getty of Iron; two granddaughters, Bonnie Furin of White Bear Lake and Byrdie K. (Ron) Dicklich of Pengilly; three stepchildren, Daniel Sundberg of Virginia, Dennis Sundberg and Deanne (George) Hukka of Newport; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents in 1958 and 1961; and her husband, Eugene, in 1968.

Mitchell J. "Mitch" Lomsak
Mitchell J. "Mitch" Lomsak, 86, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John Doyle as celebrant. Visitation one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.
Mitchell J. “Mitch" Lomsak, 86, of Virginia died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born Jan. 16, 1918, in Virginia to Michael and Sarah (Sanders) Lomsak and had been a lifelong Virginia resident. He was a Virginia High School graduate and was a Navy veteran. On Aug. 31, 1940, he married Anne M. Gagnon in Mountain Iron. Mitch retired from the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific Railway Co. in 1980 as a locomotive engineer after many years of service.

Mitch was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia; a past member of the American Legion Post 239 of Virginia; and a member of the Railroad Retirement Association.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, of Virginia; four daughters, Bev Peterson of Hoyt Lakes, Melody (Bud) Kottom of Britt, Betty (Larry) Olson of Dundas, Minn., and Mary Andrzejeski of Northfield, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Bernard (Angela) Lomsak, of Tampa Bay, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Craig Kottom; a granddaughter, Julie Laugen; a brother, Virgil Lomsak; and a sister, Jean Johnson.

Arthur C. 'Clancy' Johnson
Arthur C. 'Clancy' Johnson, 83, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Iron River VFW in Iron River, Wis. The Rev. David Kebschull, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, will officiate. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E. Fifth St., Superior and will continue from 11 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the VFW. Burial will be in Everrest Cemetery, Waino, Wis.

Arthur C. "Clancy" Johnson, 83, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 in the Delano Health Care Center in Delano, Minn.

He was born on March 1, 1921, in Superior, Wis., to Arthur and Anna (Fredell) Johnson. Clancy had previously resided in Brule, Wis., Aurora, and Richfield, Minn. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in agricultural engineering. He retired in 1980 after working for 18 years as a mechanical engineer with Erie Mining Co. Clancy served in the United States Army Infantry during World War II in Europe. He served with the VFW Honor Guard for many years and was an active member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also an active member of 63rd Infantry Division Association; University of Wisconsin Alumni; National Rifle Association, Brule Lions Club, and the Engineers Club of Northern Minnesota.

He is survived by one son, Arthur "Artie" (Lucia) Johnson, Lakeville, Minn.; one daughter, Julie (Jonathan) Myhre of Independence, Minn.; three grandchildren, Michelle Johnson, Lucas and Noah Myhre; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Culhane; his parents, a son, Paul David Johnson; and brother, James L. Johnson.

Paul Arvo Mlot
Paul Arvo Mlot, 21, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth, (218) 727-3555. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with wake prayers at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from noon until the services Wednesday.

Paul Arvo Mlot, 21, of Duluth, went to heaven Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, and he will be sorely missed.

The son of Dennis and Linda (Jalkanen) Mlot, brother of Lydia Marie Mlot, he was born May 5, 1983, in Dearborn, Mich. Paul attended St. Mary’s Catholic Elementary, Marietta School in Marrietta, Ohio, Parkersburg Catholic Elementary School in Parkersburg, W.Va., and graduated from Virginia High School. He was presently a student at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and was also an aspiring young musician.

Paul will be sorely missed by numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and associates.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Evelyn Mlot, formerly of Dearborn, Mich., and Arvo and Rosella Jalkanen, formerly of Chassell, Mich.; his aunt, Lynn DeCorte; and uncle, Marcus Mlot.

Erna A. Novak
Erna A. Novak, 81, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia. Con-celebrants will be the Rev. John Doyle of Holy Spirit and longtime family friend the Rev. Kenneth C. Simpson, chaplain at Northwestern University Neumann Center in Evanston, Ill. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, and continue from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the church. Burial will be in the family plot at the Eveleth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements are by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

Erna A. Novak, 81, of Virginia, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Presbyterian Home in Roseville, Minn. The beautiful life of a loving and caring mother came to an end as a result of congestive heart failure, complicated by diabetes. She died peacefully surrounded by her family.

She was born in Chisholm, to Slovenian immigrant parents, Frank and Ana Ruparcich, the eldest of five children. Following high school graduation in 1941, she took employment in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met her future husband, Stanley Novak, a native of Eveleth, whom she wed in October 1945. After numerous years in Cleveland, they decided to return home to the Iron Range to rear their family. She and Stan were happily married for 37 1/2 years before his sudden passing in April 1983. Among her many interests were music and dance. She loved to sing, and with her husband’s voice, they made a melodic duo. They blended their harmonious voices and were the smoothest dance couple on the floor, passions they passed on to their children. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and active in its guild and choir. She was also active with the YMCA in Mountain Iron and the Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the SNPJ Fraternal Society and the Slovenian Women’s Union.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Rettker of Indian Head Park, Ill., and Lynn (Glenn) Olson of Lino Lakes, Minn.; two sons, Glen (Yvonne) Novak of Duluth, and James (Kelly) Novak of Andover, Minn.; one brother, Robert Ruparcich of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sisters, Florence Just of Middleburgh Heights, Ohio, and Violet Ruparcich of Pittsburg, Penn.; 11 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including cousins stateside and in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Stanley Duane Novak; and a brother, Harold Ruparcich.

Olga Cecilia Slogar
Olga Cecilia Slogar, 84, SERVICES: A celebration of Olga’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Olga Cecilia Slogar, 84, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

She was born June 29, 1920, in Aurora, to Anton and Mary (Markovich) Perushek. Olga graduated from Ely High School in 1938. She married Theodore Slogar in 1939 and they moved to Isabella, Minn., where she ran a bar and was post mistress for the postal service. After retirement, she moved to Silver Bay, where she enjoyed traveling, family and other assorted local activities.

Olga is survived by her sons, Paul Slogar of Isabella, Gerrick (Mary) Slogar of Cumming, Ga., Joseph Slogar of Finland, Minn.; a sister, Helen Kocherar of Ely; brothers, John (Alice) Perushek of Ely, and Ludwig (Jean) Mistek of Lake Vermilion; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Theodore Slogar; friend, Louis Rushmeyer; daughter, Dona; son-in-law, Sid Breden; sisters, Mary and Rose Pucel; and brothers, Tony Perushek, and Joe and Edward Mistek.
