Anthony Joseph 'Tony' Turk, 57, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia. Monsignor Pat McDowell and the Rev. John Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church and will continue one hour prior to the Mass on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Anthony Joseph “Tony’’ Turk, 57, of Virginia, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born May 19, 1947, in Virginia, to Joseph and Olga (Hobyan) Turk and was a longtime resident. Tony was a graduate of Virginia High School and the University of Minnesota-Duluth with degrees in speech, English and drama. He taught at Benilde-St. Margaret for two years prior to a 34-year career in Virginia. He was a talented English teacher who could reach his students, was active in drama productions and did some play writing. Tony was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, serving as a cantor and a reader, and singing in the church choir.

He is survived by brothers, Joseph Turk of Biloxi, Miss., and John Turk of Flagstaff, Ariz.; nieces and nephews, including Joe, Jackie, Jennifer, Jeffery, Tom and Tanya Turk; aunts and uncles; cousins; special friends, Kathy, Bob and Kevin Rice, Deeder Christenson, and John and Barb Turk; faithful companion, Kaleigh, his dog; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John F. Gorecki
John F. Gorecki, 77, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Babbitt. The Rev. James Scheuer will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church, and for one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be in Argo Cemetery. John F. Gorecki, 77, of Babbitt, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Benton County, Minn., to Stanley and Stella (Gretzlock) Gorecki. On Sept. 10, 1949, he married LaVerne Stellmach at St. Joseph’s Church in Morrill, Minn. John worked in the mine in Keewatin and in Greenland in the North Atlantic in 1954, before moving to Babbitt and working at Reserve Mining Co., where he was employed for 28 years. They lived in Jacksonville, Fla., where he worked for Caterpillar Company until his retirement and return to Babbitt in 1988. John was an avid card player, belonging to the smear and cribbage clubs for more than 20 years. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting moose, deer and geese, trapping, and berry picking. John was also a logger.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; sons, John “Junior” (Alice) of Babbitt, Harlan “Buck” of Embarrass, Gerald “Jerry” and Loren, both of Babbitt; daughter, Loreen Gorecki of Cross, S.C.; grandchildren, Ronnie, Laura, Georgine, Joelle, Jacob, Robbie, Jeff, Kyle, and Ashley; and one great-granddaughter, Cody Ann.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sharon Marie in 1991; sisters, Francis Chmielweski, and Ann Kampa; a brother, Frank.

Timothy J. Skaudis
Timothy J. Skaudis, 48, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. John Doyle will officiate.

Timothy J. Skaudis, 48, of Eveleth, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004.

He was born Feb. 20, 1956, to Leo and Rosalee (Urbiha) Skaudis in Virginia, where he grew up and graduated from Roosevelt High School Class of 1974. He was employed with Minntac until he was laid off. He moved to the Twin Cities, where he worked for Northwest Airlines. He returned to the Iron Range and was rehired by Minntac as a M.E.O. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America Local No. 1938. He was united in marriage to Candice Gordon on Oct. 16, 1998, in Gilbert. He loved spending time snowmobiling, four wheeling, and hunting. He will be missed by his many relatives and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife, Candice; two sons, Brandon and Thomas of Eveleth; mother, Rosalee Skaudis of Virginia; mother and father-in-law, Lowell and Helen Gordon of Virginia; sister, Susan (Bill Coleman) Skaudis of Eagan; two brothers, Steven (Susan Hakala) Skaudis of Virginia, Bryan (Shari Lightner) Skaudis of Apple Valley, Minn.; nieces, Alyson Coleman, Meghan Skaudis, Abigale Skaudis; nephews, Isaac Coleman, Zakary Skaudis, Joey Skaudis; special companion, his beagle Kody.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Skaudis on Nov. 20, 2001.

Daniel R. Beystrom
Daniel R. Beystrom, 51, SERVICES: Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.

Daniel R. Beystrom, 51, of Eveleth, a resident of Eveleth and a former longtime resident of Virginia and Britt, died late Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in Virginia.

He was born Nov. 4, 1952, in Virginia to Roy L. and Olive E. (Jankila) Beystrom. He graduated in 1971 from Virginia Roosevelt High School, where he lettered in hockey, football and track. He also captained the Mesabi State Community College hockey team and attended St. Cloud State University. Danny was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper and greatly loved the outdoors of Northern Minnesota. He will be greatly missed by his family, loved ones and friends.

He is survived by three sisters, Audrey (James) Amundson of Duluth, Shirley (Corky) Weiher of Scandia, Minn., and Kay (Malcolm) Reynolds of Honolulu, Hawaii; one brother, Rodney (Martha) Beystrom, of Mound, Minn.; nephews, Douglas Weiher and Blaine Amundson; nieces, Beret Amundson, Gretchen Weiher, Brita Reynolds and Elissa Reynolds; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy “Lefty’’ Beystrom, in 1980 and his mother, Olive “Ollie’’ Beystrom, in 2000.

Inez L. Andrews
Inez L. Andrews, 85, SERVICES: Celebration of life 1 p.m. Saturday at the McDavitt Township Hall, with the Rev. Robert Andrews officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Zim Cemetery. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Inez L. Andrews, 85, of Zim went to be with her Lord on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004. She died at her Zim home surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born Nov. 14, 1918, to Charles and Gertrude (Cox) Nobel in Crosby, Minn. She grew up as a tomboy and graduated from Gilbert High School. She later attended the Eveleth Junior College for two years. Following college, she married Harold Lee Andrews on July 26, 1941, in Gilbert. Inez sang and played the guitar on local radio at the Androy Hotel in Hibbing, where she received various awards. An important part of her life was her involvement at Camp George E. Sigel, first as a tent camper and later with her husband as a counselor. She then became a head cook. Inez loved children and in 1951 became a lifelong foster mom. She loved music and playing guitar and piano for her family, church and camps. She was an avid reader and Bible teacher. Inez was famous for her Cornish pasties, ragdolls and Christmas stockings. She had a large house and large heart and wanted both of them full of people.

Survivors include her children, Gareth (Carol) Andrews of Zim, Sherrill (Richard) Kooyer of Billings, Mont., Lynette (Casey) Aro of Zim, Craig Andrews of Zim, Doris (Jack) Mattson of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Wilma Andrews of Zim and Jeff (Lettie) Andrews of Galesville, Wis.; a sister, Gertrude Bjerkness, of Cloquet; 104 foster children; 11 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; three brothers; and two sisters.

Lucile Marguerite Tyrrell
Lucile Marguerite Tyrrell, 85, SERVICES: Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. Saturday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth, with the Rev. Joel Hastings as celebrant. Visitation for one hour before the service at the church. Burial in Forbes Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Memorials preferred to the Lake Haven Manor Bus Fund, 7700 Grand Ave., Duluth, Minn 55807.

Lucile Marguerite Tyrrell, 85, of Duluth, formerly of Ely Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Oct. 21, 1918, to Ray and Clara (Schramski) Truman in Janesville, Minn. She attended school in Janesville, graduating from high school there in 1935. She married Earl Thomas Tyrrell on Nov. 28, 1940. She and her family moved to the Eveleth area in 1953. Lucile was a homemaker and worked at the Cluett-Peabody in Eveleth from 1961 to 1968, sewing shirts and socks for Arrow Company. She served as representative for the local textile workers union while at Cluett-Peabody. After the death of her husband, Earl, in 2000, Lucile moved to Duluth to be hear her family. Lucile was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth, where she was a member of the choir and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a 4-H leader for many years. She was a seamstress and crocheted beautifully and loved playing cards with friends and family and following the Minnesota Twins. Her greatest joy was being with her family and friends. We are grateful for being able to share her life. Her strength and kindness will be our example.

She is survived by her daughter, Peg (Mike) Radakovich of Hermantown; grandchildren, Nicholas Downs of Duluth, Thomas Downs of Duluth and Annie Radakovich of Hermantown; a brother-in-law, Everett Stanke of Janesville, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her many special friends at Lake Haven Manor, especially her roommate, Joyce.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Earl; and her sister, Elizabeth Stanke.

Conrad G. Terkelsen
Conrad G. Terkelsen of Thorndike, Maine, died July 20, 2004, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine.

He was born in Newten, Mass., on Aug. 20, 1932, the son of Albert and Helen (Titus) Terkelsen. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Air Force.

Survivors are his wife of 49 years, Betty (Larson) Terkelsen; son, David (Karla) of Bellingham, Mass.; daughter, Joy Terkelsen of Denver; three grandchildren, Allison, Sarah and Bryan; and sisters-in-law, Angela (Earl) Larson and Katherine (Herbert) Carlson.

Florence ‘Bebe’ Belay

Florence “Bebe’’ Belay, 84, of Virginia, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 11, 1920, to Peter Lanari and Assunta Gustantini of Virginia and grew up in Virginia. On Feb. 20, 1939, she married Fred L. Belay. Together Fred and Bebe owned and operated Belay Candy Company and the Toot ‘N Tote in Virginia, where they raised their family. She retired in 1980 to her home on Lake Vermilion and lived and fished there for 20 years. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia and St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower and participated on Greenwood Township committees.

She is survived by her children, Fred A. (Eileen Emberson) Belay of Eau Claire, Wis., Margaret (John) Pecarina of Midlothian, Texas, and Marilyn Belay of Annandale, Minn.; grandchildren, Catherine (David) Farley of Rochester, Minn., Anthony (Jennifer) Belay of Poynette, Wis., Martin (Tui) Pecarina of Rockwall, Texas, John (Marcela) Pecarina of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Julie Pecarina of Austin, Texas; seven great-grandchioldren; and her sister, Mafalda Tuk of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred L. Belay; brothers, Augusto and Raymond; sisters, Ellen Nigro and Amelia Tomar; and her fishing partner, Max Pauchnik.

Lillian ‘Jane’ LaTarte
Lillian ‘Jane’ LaTarte, 85, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. The Rev. Thomas Radaich will be celebrant. Visitation from 9 a.m. to the time of the service at the church. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids.

Lillian “Jane’’ LaTarte, 85, of Grand Rapids passed away Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Grand Itascan Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids.

She was born July 23, 1919, in Duluth to George and Lillian Lockhart. She was married to Donald LaTarte on June 21, 1969, in Duluth, where they lived until moving to the Grand Rapids area in 1971. Jane was a member of the Eastern Star and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, where she enjoyed giving patient support and working on Daffodil Days. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Donald LaTarte of Grand Rapids; daughters, Cindy Wagar of Richfield, Minn., Denise (Louis) Thompson of Grand Rapids, Lorine LaTarte of Grand Rapids and Dawn (Jack) Johnson of Grand Rapids; sons, John LaTarte of Grand Rapids and Mark LaTarte of Virginia; special daughter-in-law, Georgie Patterson of Duluth; sister-in-law, Betty Wilson of Duluth; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Karen Douville; three brothers and five sisters.

Eva E. McCormick
Eva E. McCormick, 90, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Monday in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The Rev. John Doyle will officiate. Eva E. McCormick, 90, of Virginia died Thursday at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

She was born Jan. 21, 1914, in Jamestown, N.D., the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Duchscher) Mattern. She lived in Jamestown and Valley City, N.D., for many years. On July 4, 1941, she was married to Lyle L. McCormick at St. Catherine’s Parish in Valley City. In 1999 she moved to Virginia, where she had resided since.

She is survived by her children, Jackie (Eugene) Hofmann of Seattle, Wash., Pat McCormick of Anchorage, Alaska, Judy McCormick of St. Paul, Mike (Joan) McCormick of Tampa, Fla., and Bill (Debbie) McCormick of Virginia; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Eileen Mattern of Billings, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle; and two sisters, Madeline Bellows and Agnes Westman.

James F. Modec
James F. Modec, 72, SERVICES: Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Eveleth Cemetry. Msgr. Aleksander Suchan will officiate. Funeral Mass was held at St. James Church in Arlington Heights, Ill. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be given to the American Cancer Society, 100 W. Palatine Road, Suite 150, Palatine, Ill. 60067, or to the American Diabetes Association, 30 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 2015, Chicago, Ill. 60602. James F. Modec, 72, of Arlington Heights, Ill., died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1932, to Frank and Mary (Prebeg) Modec in Eveleth. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. James was an Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He had been a teacher with School District 25.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth R. Modec of Arlington Heights; daughter, Alicia (John) Poreda of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son, Michael (fiancee Andrea Fisher) Modec of Custer, S.D.; grandchildren, Edward Modec, Cody and Shaylyn Poreda; and brothers, Dennis (Susan) and Thomas (Elizabeth).

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edwin M. Hovi
Edwin M. Hovi, 80, SERVICES: Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and will continue from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral service Monday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Nathan Sager will officiate. Burial will be in Sandy Cemetery North.

Edwin M. Hovi, 80, of rural Virginia, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Edwin was born April 7, 1924, to Alexander and Lydia (Erkkila) Hovi in Sandy Township. He was a life long resident of Sandy Township, being the 3rd generation to farm the property homesteaded by his grandfather, Matt Erkkila in 1907. Edwin enjoyed visiting with fishermen, duck hunters, and rice harvesters who used his property on Big Rice Lake. His wit and ambition will be missed.

Surviving are his two daughters, Debbie McKenna of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Lori (Bob) Marksman of Embarrass; three sons, Lee (Anna) Hovi of rural Virginia, Jerry Hovi of rural Virginia, and Aaron of rural Virginia; four grandchildren, Loren Hovi, Lucas Hovi, Ashley Hovi, Hailey Hovi; favorite pet, Smokey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helvie Palo; brother, Russell Hovi; and son-in-law, Tom Mckenna.

Eino Jalmar Maki
Eino Jalmar Maki, 83, SERVICES: Memorial gathering at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the Twin Lakes Pavilion south of Aurora.

Eino Jalmar Maki, 83, of Sonoma, Calif., died Dec. 8, 2003.

He was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Markham and lived in Palo until 1963 when he moved to California. He was a retired welder and mechanic. He was a World War II veteran of the Army, serving in Europe.

Survivors are his wife, Martha of Sonoma; two daughters, Sharon Hilton of Sonoma and Diane (Rudy) Avila of Pleasant Hill, Calif., two sons, James Maki of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Robert (Karen) Maki of Payette, Idaho; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Elias (Ailie) Maki of Markham, Eero Maki and Howard (Alice) Maki all of Markham; and sister-in-law, Shirley Maki of Palo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Amanda Maki; brothers, Tom, William, Frank and Lauri and a brother at birth; and two sisters, Esther Prahl and Helmi Hadley.
