Wayne Carron
Wayne Carron, 70, SERVICES: Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Dougherty Funeral Home. The Rev. Peter Muhich will officiate. Visitation will be in the funeral home, 6-8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. Tuesday until service time. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are: David Carron, Steve Carron, Harold Taylor, Ken Kapella, David Sampson and Chad Kellar.

Wayne Carron, 70, of Hibbing died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, in his home after a short battle with cancer.

He was born April 12, 1934, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Harold and Mary (Pischke) Carron. He married Davis Lee Charmoli in 1955. They lived in Virginia before he served in the Army, stationed mostly in Germany. He and his wife moved to Hibbing in 1958, where he worked at the Hanna Research Lab. He was the operator of the Union 76 gas station in the Graysher Shopping Center and also held the dealership for U-Haul. The last six years he spent working for Ken’s A-1 Service Station and Convenience Store.

He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was interested in hunting, fishing and gardening. His biggest hobby, however, was trains. Many hours were spent in the garage where he created his dream.

He is survived by his wife, Davis; two daughters, Kim Landacre of Hibbing and Lisa (Harold) Taylor of Pine City, Minn.; four grandchildren, Brett Landacre, Christine Shevich, Sarah Taylor and Niki Taylor; a brother, Steve (Sharon) Carron, of Virginia; and three sisters, Donna (Tom) Delich of Duluth, Maryann (Leroy) Wiire of Eveleth and Shirley (Bill) Mealio of Elk River, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother; Harold Carron.

Stanley P. Hage
Stanley P. Hage, 75, SERVICES: Funeral 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bauman-Vermilion Funeral Home, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, in Tower, with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. To leave a remembrance online, go to www.baumanfuneralhome.com.

Stanley P. Hage, 75, of Tower died Saturday morning, Aug. 14, 2004, at the University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born July 22, 1929, in Duluth to Carl and Ethel Preston Hage. He attended school in Cotton and later enlisted in the Air Force, where he served during the Korean Conflict. On Sept. 18, 1954, he married Linda Marchant while serving in England. Stan spent most of his life in the Tower area, having moved there in 1962. He worked for more than 25 years for the Erie (LTV) Mining Co. before retiring in 1980 due to poor health. He was a member of the Tower Ambulance and Fire Department for more than 24 years, past commander of the Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40/8, and United Steelworkers of America Local 4108. Stan loved camping, playing cribbage and pinochle, and looked forward every day to coffee at the Tower Cafe with all of his many friends. Stan was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend and he will be greatly missed by many.

He is survived by his children, Linda Hage of St. Paul, Dan Hage of Tower and daughter-in-law, Pamela Hage, of St. Paul; six grandchildren, Heather, Danielle, Matthew, Jesse, Kaylene and Chaynna; and two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Austin; two brothers, Kenneth (Lorraine) Hage of Cotton and Martin (Sharon) Hage of Twig; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 45 years, Linda; and his son, David.

Levio Penoncello
Levio Penoncello, 84, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John Doyle as celebrant. Visitation two hours before service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements are by Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Levio Penoncello, 84, of Virginia died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

He was born Oct. 3, 1919, in Franklin Location, Virginia, to Joseph and Lucile (Caretto) Penoncello and was a lifelong Virginia resident. He attended school in Virginia and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He married Ann B. Prebarich in Eveleth on Oct. 25, 1941. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1981 after many years of service. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Virginia; two sons, Joseph (Georgeann) Penoncello of Whittier, Calif., and Peter (Jolenta) Penoncello of Richfield, Minn.; a daughter, Cathy (Paul) Kwiatkowski, of Eveleth; nine grandchildren, Kelly Jo Roberts, Tracy Ann (Steve) King, Corey (Nancy) Kwiatkowski, Marc (Nicole) Kwiatkowski, Jamie Kwiatkowski, Bryce Penoncello, Darran (Sherry) Penoncello, Sean Penoncello and Ashley Penoncello; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Ida Renzaglia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gerald Penoncello, in 1997; and a sister, Alvera Lanari.

George W. 'Bumbo' Beasley
George W. 'Bumbo' Beasley, 50, SERVICES: A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Taconite Community Center. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

George W. “Bumbo” Beasley, 50, of Grand Rapids, former long-time Taconite resident, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis, with family members and friends by his side.

He is survived by his mother, Lila; sisters, Jane and Sally (Phil) Peterangelo; brother, John (Helen); nieces, Jennifer, Alison, and Ashlee; nephew, Jake; and special cousin, Kerry Carlson. He will be sadly missed by long-time friends Rock, Pat, Spook, Nels, Felix, DJ, Whitey, Drooler, Ace, Bird, Deacon, Bucket, Asthma, Oogie, Mooch, Eggy, Smuz, Sked, Rat, Barney, Slimmy, Chiefy, Ron, Wang, Dick, Bozy, Block, Melon, Weasel, Ree, Nibs, Jeckey, Snuff, Lefty, Rabbit, Fleabag, Smelvin, to name a few. George led a colorful life, proud to have visited all of the lower 48 states and Alaska. He held a variety of jobs throughout his lifetime and was an accomplished landscaper. He was an avid sports fan and had extensive sports card and Frisbee collections. His fascination with Frisbees led him to construct a Frisbee golf course that has been the source of much enjoyment for himself, as well as his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack; and brother, Jeff.

Tyne Limmer
Tyne Limmer, 80, SERVICES: Family will gather for a burial service at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Florenton Cemetery. Friends and family are asked and welcomed to gather for a celebration of her life at the old Wuori Town Hall, Senior Citizens Center, at 1 p.m. Take Highway 169 north (Ely), three miles to left on County 303, bear right on County 307. Arrangements are by Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Tyne Limmer, a lifelong resident of Virginia and Wuori Township, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Miller Dwan Hospital in Duluth.

She was born April 8, 1924, in Wuori Township. She was employed for several years at the former Elroy Supper Club and several other area restaurants. She was a counselor at the Gethsemane Group Home in Virginia, where she developed special friendships with Stevie, Cary and Lincoln. She was a foster parent for St. Louis County, a food shelf volunteer in Gilbert and a volunteer driver for St. Louios County, transporting kidney dialysis patients.

She loved her family and her very large extended family. She loved to spend time at her cabin at Isaac Lake, where she spent countless hours berry picking, fishing and hunting. She loved gardening and dancing.

She is survived by her children, Laurie (Teresa) Brunfelt of Willmar, Minn., Richard (Judy) Brunfelt of Plymouth, Minn., Carmen (Harlan) Pernu of Britt, Sandra Lilli and Dawn (Jack) Harju of Eveleth, Jerry (Betty) Brunfelt of Duluth, Wanda (Marlan) Parks of Virginia; five stepchildren; 16 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and very special extended famly members, Connie and Carol Smith; sister, Esther (Richard) Brunfelt; brother, Ensio (Helen) Sainio; sister-in-law, Dale (Laurie) Sainio; constant companions and caregivers, Buddy and Petie.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arne Brunfelt and Ferdinand Limmer; her parents, Toimi and Taimi Sainio; four brothers; three sisters; stepchildren, Barbara Mackie, John Limmer; and step-granddaughter, Shelly Mackie.

Gail L. Jacobson
Gail L. Jacobson, 48, SERVICES: A visitation for Gail will be held from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service on Friday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. The Rev. Donald Norr will officiate at the service. Interment will follow at the Sandy Cemetery in Sandy Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Gail L. Jacobson, 48, of Tower and formerly of Virginia and Britt, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born Oct. 14, 1955, in Virginia, the daughter of Albert and Esther (Pylka) Jacobson.

Gail enjoyed being with people and was a hostess at the Tower Cafe. She also gained much satisfaction in working with the elderly through Home Health. Gail loved dancing and being in the spotlight and liked cooking, baking, and gardening. She was a sensitive, loving and caring person who found her greatest joy in being with her two sons and her family. She was the godmother of Lori Manseau and Ryan Igo. Gail will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving sons, Christopher and Adam of Tower; brothers and sisters, Dennis (Gloria) Jacobson of Britt, Florence (Roger Hario) Durbin of Ely, Darlene (Brian Koupus) Elias of Eveleth, Karen (Raymond) Lehto of Britt, Sharon (Tom) Paavala of Britt, Brian (Suzanne) Jacobson of Gardner, Mont., and Janet (Mike) Swanson of Virginia; special people she loved, Chuck Morcom and Dave Swanson; best friend, Cindy Padgett and her son, Jimmy, whom Gail was like a second mother to; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1973; mother in 2000; brother, Alvin; and sister, Tammy.

Violet Emily Ojakangas
Violet Emily Ojakangas, 86, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monticello, Minn. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Violet Emily (Autio) Ojakangas, 86, of Monticello, Minn., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Monticello-Big Lake Nursing Home in Monticello.

She was born Sept. 24, 1917, in Iron. She attended and graduated from Cherry High School and the Eveleth Junior College in 1938. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at the Range Cooperative Federation in Virginia and as office services supervisor at United Power Association of Elk River from 1964 until her retirement in 1979.

She married Wilmer “Bill’’ Ojakangas of Gilbert on July 12, 1941. They lived in the Virginia/Eveleth area, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and Tennessee before moving to Monticello in 1951. She loved to sing and was a member of the Suomi Chorus of Virginia. She and Bill loved to camp with their family and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters, Darlene (David) Gunderson of Annandale, Minn., and Sharon (Steve) Hansen of Sequim, Wash.; grandchildren, Glen Gunderson (Nancy) of Independence, Minn., Kristin (Cory) Koplin of Frontenac, Minn., Sarah Gunderson of Plymouth, Minn., Heather Hansen of Issaquah, Wash., and Amber Hansen of Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Brendan and Julia Koplin of Frontenac, Minn., and Sarah Gunderson of Independence, Minn.; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elvira Autio, of Cherry; and her brother, John (Nancy) Autio, of Eden Prairie, Minn.

Virginia ‘Pinky’ Pond
Virginia ‘Pinky’ Pond, 83, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Friday in the United Protestant Church in Morgan Park in Duluth, with the Rev. Peter Bagley officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to the United Protestant Church of Morgan Park would be appreciated. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers Funeral Home of Duluth.

Virginia “Pinky’’ Pond, 83, of Duluth died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in the Garden House Estates in Duluth.

She was born May 19, 1921, in Duluth to Remington and Ethel Taylor. She was a lifelong Duluth resident and a Morgan Park High School graduate. She was a member of the United Protestant UCC Church of Morgan Park. She married William Pond on Dec. 19, 1942, and they shared 55 years together. She accompanied her husband, Bill, to various air corps pilot training bases prior to his active duty during World War II. She worked at various jobs including the Riverside Shipyards. The highlights of her life included cabin outings, playing cards, yearly vacation trips and her speical love of cooking for her family.

Pinky, a longtime resident of Morgan Park, moved to Garden House Estates in Riverside on Jan. 8, 2001. The family wants to thank the entire staff and owner for their affection, love and caring ways they showed for Pinky. The Garden House truly is the best assisted living facility in the city and words cannot express the family’s appreciation for all the special care and love she received there.

She is survived by two sons, Randall (Jean) Pond of Mountain Iron, and Ricky Pond of Duluth; three brothers, Kenneth Taylor of Superior, Wis., James (Marilyn) Taylor of Pohenix, Ariz., and Richard (Effie) Taylor of Winter Haven, Fla.; two sisters, Mildred “Millie” Hegwood, her lifelong best friend, of Duluth and Ruthie Smith of St. Cloud, Minn.; three grandsons, William Pond of Mountain Iron, Robert Pond of Virginia and Corey (Nicole) Pond of Duluth; a great-grandson, Nicholas Pond, of Mountain Iron; a great-granddaughter, Jo Pond, of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1997; and her parents.

Violet L. Anderson
Violet L. Anderson, 84, SERVICES: Funeral at noon on Saturday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Donald C. Norr will officiate. Visitation from 11 a.m. to the time of service. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Cotton.

Violet L. Anderson, 84, of Virginia, formerly of Cotton, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born on July 8, 1920, to Lars and Esther (Anderson) Lindstrand in Ellsworth, Wis. As a young child, she moved to West Duluth, where she attended Denfeld High School. Violet was married to Donald Anderson in 1943 in Duluth. She later moved to Cottong, where she resided for most of her lifetime. The last year she had resided at the Arrowhead Senior Living Community in Eveleth with her husband residing at the Laurentian Manor in Virginia. She was a very sociable, kindhearted person and loved to be around people.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Cotton; son, Kim Anderson and girlfriend Sue of Eveleth; brother, John Lindstrand of Raymore, Mo.; granddaughter, Amber Anderson of Andover, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Carl; and a sister, Lucy.

Michael Hugh Durbin
Michael Hugh Durbin, 51, SERVICES: An informal gathering of friends will be held Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. at the home of Mary Ahlstrand, 9443 St. Odilia Beach Road, Tower.

Michael Hugh Durbin, 51, of Bellingham, Wash., formerly of Virginia, died Aug. 15, 2004, in Rosarito, Mexico. He died unexpectedly while surfing with his nephew Joe.

He was born June 4, 1953, in Minneapolis to Charles and Donamay Durbin. He graduated from Washington Western University in Washington and he worked as a senior project manager for the architectural firm of David Evans and Associates. He loved kayak racing, water polo, ocean fishing, snorkeling and mountain climbing. He was an accomplished woodworker and carpenter. He was a very devoted father and a loyal friend. He made friends wherever he went and had a smile that stayed with you forever.

He has an adult daughter, Bryndl of Arizona and daughter, Emma of Bellingham.

Survivors include his brother, William Durbin of Lake Vermilion and his children, Jessica and Reid; sister, Mary Ahlstrand of Lake Vermilion and her children, Joe, Tim and Mike.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Donamay.

Olaf Odin J. Johnson
Olaf Odin J. Johnson, 89, SERVICES: Funeral 10:30 a.m. today at the St. Olaf Lutheran Retreat Center, rural Devils Lake, with the Rev. Harold Ovre officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Odin’s six grandchildren, Paul Johnson of Eveleth, Kyle Johnson of Marshall, Minn., Sara Grewe of New Hope, Minn., Beth Pinkney of Woodbury, Minn., Jodi Appelt of Minot and Steve Johnson of Brainerd. Arrangements are by the Gilbertson Funeral Home of Devils Lake.

Olaf Odin J. Johnson, 89, a longtime Devils Lake resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.

He was born April 29, 1915, at Jordan, Mont., to Olaf and Julia (Bryn) Johnson. His parents had moved from rural Devils Lake and homesteaded near Jordan. At the age of six, Odin returned with his family to rural Devils Lake to farm. He attended a one-room school and helped with the farming operations from a young age.

He married his beloved wife and caretaker, Olive Kenner, on May 18, 1940, in Lakota. They established their home in Grand Harbor Township where they lived, worked and raised their family. In addition to farming, Odin worked as a land surveyor, worked at a creamery and was a longtime employee of the Powell Motor Co. of Devils Lake. He worked there for 37 years and was well known for his excellent work ethics. He also worked for the General Motors Corp. in Pontiac, Mich., in the early 1940s. After retiring from the Powell Motor Co. he helped maintain several apartment buildings and did volunteer work, including Meals on Wheels and many volunteer hours at the church. He especially enjoyed helping and spending time with his family and friends. Odin loved time spent with Olive and his family at holiday celebrations, birthdays and any gathering where there was a chance to visit with family, relatives and friends. He was an excellent cook and always made sure there was a bountiful supply of food for any gathering. Lutefisk, lefse and other traditional Norwegian foods were always served, but the options of ribs, roast or turkey were also a part of the menu in case the kids weren’t so daring.

He was a confirmed member of the Norway Lutheran Church, rural Devils Lake, and later was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was a former member of the Eagles Lodge.

The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Corbett and all of the staff at the Heartland Care Center for their excellent, loving care of Odin.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Olive; a daughter, Judith (Ron) Pinkney, of Hoyt Lakes; sons, Bruce (Barbara) Johnson of Virginia and Douglas (Dana) Johnson of Minot, N.D.; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Kenner, of Devils Lake; a sister-in-law, Leila Johnson, of Kittitas, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Adolf Bryn, of rural Devils Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mildred Mallard and Signe Bryn; and brother, Sidney Johnson.
