Michael Marvin Margo
Michael Marvin Margo, 90, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the Landmark Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia. The Rev. Jack Harris will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.

Michael Marvin Margo, 90, of West Virginia Addition to Mountain Iron, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Chisholm, to John and Elizabeth (Terek) Margo and attended the Chisholm schools, graduating in 1934. Mike married his favorite dance partner, Ione “Cookie” Bird of Ely on July 4, 1939. Mike and “Cookie” raised five children in Hibbing before moving to Virginia upon Mike’s retirement. He worked in the field of construction, primarily as a foreman for E.W. Coons Company. His career took him all over Minnesota and as far away as Greenland, Canada and Alaska, where he worked on the Alcan Highway.

Our father will be enthusiastically tending heaven’s most beautiful flower gardens, until we are all together again. He will be fondly remembered as “The Flower Man” of Meadowbrook Apartments on Highway 7. To the joy of those passing by, our father has been planting flowers in this location for the last 18 years. Many have appreciated his inexhaustible enthusiasm for nature’s beauty. Mike will also be remembered for dancing with his favorite partner, our mother, for playing the harmonica, for his devilish nature, his sense of humor and his heart of gold.

Mike is survived by a family that loved him dearly. He will be missed by our mother, Ione “Cookie” Margo, with whom he had just celebrated a 65th wedding anniversary; his four daughters, Marlys Kirk of Minneapolis, Ione (Gordon) Hakola of Scottsdale, Ariz., Sandy (Darrell) Niemi of Hibbing, and Debbie (Rick) Herrington of Tucson, Ariz.; and one son, Dennis Margo of Phoenix, Ariz. Mike is survived by one brother, George Margo of Minneapolis. He will be deeply missed by his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth (Terek) Margo; and siblings, John (Jack) Margo, Fred Margo, Sue DeMarco, Mary Sametz and Ann Hudak.

Evelyn A. “Googie” Cherne
Evelyn A. “Googie” Cherne, 77, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Joel Hastings will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth.

Evelyn A “Googie” Cherne, 77, a lifelong resident of Eveleth, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born May 9, 1927, to Marko and Anna (Vlajnich) Starcevich. Evelyn was a graduate of Eveleth High School and Eveleth Junior College. She married Francis A. “Fritz” Cherne on July 30, 1971, in Eveleth. She retired as head of purchasing for Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory. She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Margaret 1888, Croatian Fraternal Union 94 and the Auxiliary to Mesaba Range Post 1172. Evelyn was a former member of the Eveleth Golf Club, Curling Club, Skating Club and Eveleth Does. She enjoyed playing cards, Friday night outings with the girls and was an avid sports fan.

Evelyn is survived by a sister, Martha Swan of Eveleth; a brother, Thomas (Irene) Karakas of Portland, Ore.; four sisters-in-law, Eve Karakas and Fran Sikich, both of Eveleth, Arlene Karakas of St. Charles, Minn., and Ruth Gilmer of Maryland; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friend, Rosemary Vidmar.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis “Fritz,” in 1994; brothers, George, Mike, Luke, Joe and John Karakas; sisters, Katie Rukavina, Mary Conda and Ann Zaic; and her parents.

Dale V. Bryers
Dale V. Bryers, 62, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Virginia. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Military rites will be accorded by the Virginia Color Guard. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Dale V. Bryers, 62, of Virginia, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 26, 1941, in Virginia, to Vaughn and Florence (Swedman) Bryers. He grew up and attended school in Virginia, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1959. He was a Vietnam War veteran, having served the U.S. Army. He worked in the construction industry for many years. He enjoyed traveling throughout the country and fishing at Lake Vermilion. He returned to Virginia in 1991 and was currently employed at Fortune Bay Casino.

Dale is survived by two daughters, Melanie (Chris) Crapser of Churubusco, Ind., and Pam Bryers of Columbia City, Ind.; grandchildren, Vaughn, Courtney and Casie Crapser; three sisters, Marsha (George) Gann of Arnold, Mo., Joan (Hans) Bryers-Friese of Hudson, Wis., and Jean (Richard) Young of Virginia; and a brother, Robin Bryers of Cook, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott Bryers; and brother, Gerald.

Louise E. Roketa
Louise E. Roketa, 80, SERVICES: Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Frank Perkovich as celebrant. Visitation one hour prior to service. Inurnment will follow in the Chisholm Cemetery. Honorary bearers will be Sara Augustson, Elaine Kruchowski, Nina Sunburg, Betty Kruchowski, Eraine Beconovich and Marian McDowell. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Louise E. Roketa, 80, of Chisholm died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, in the Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Angora to Axel and Esther (Jacobson) Anderson. She was a 1942 graduate of Cook High School and was a lifelong Iron Range area resident.

She married Peter J. Roketa on Feb. 6, 1943, in Virginia. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was known for her baking. She enjoyed being with her family and friends at the cabin and entertaining.

Survivors include her husband, Peter; children, Joan (Bart) Berquist of San Jose, Calif., Dale (Randee) of International Falls, Larry (Char) of Duluth and Linda (Tom) Johnson of Balkan; five grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian Anthony, of Chisholm.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Albert Anderson.

Richard D. 'Dick' Larson
Richard D. 'Dick' Larson, 79, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Soudan. Pastor LeRoy Holmes will be the officiant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. Military honors will be accorded by the Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245 of Tower. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook.

Richard D. "Dick" Larson, 79, of Virginia, formerly of Soudan, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, Aug. 20, 2004.

Dick was born on May 4, 1925, to Hillard and Mollie (Wenstrom) Larson in Soudan, where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Tower-Soudan High School in 1943. After high school, he served his country during World War II, as a staff sergeant in the military police of the Army, where he received many ribbons and medals of honor. He was united in marriage to June Anderson on Sept. 2, 1944, in Virginia. They resided in Soudan most of their lives, recently moving to the Washington Manor in Virginia.

He worked in the Soudan underground mine for a few years and then as a custodian in the Soudan School for 30 years, retiring in 1982. All the children at school enjoyed Dick as much as he enjoyed them. He was also a favorite of the neighborhood kids. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting deer at the McKinley Park fields with his brother Jack. He took a great interest in following his son’s football games and swim meets while they played for the Tower-Soudan Golden Eagles. Dick avidly followed the Hibbing Bluejackets basketball games on the radio when his son Richard coached the team. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he loved to spend time with them fishing at the cabin on Long Island on Lake Vermilion.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Soudan, Stuntz Bay Association, retired member of the Breitung Fire Department, and a former member of the Soudan Band.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, June, of Virginia; two sons, Richard David (Nancy) Larson of Hibbing and Steven Larson of International Falls; three grandchildren, Tom (Kate) Larson, Tina Larson and Ben Larson; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Molly Larson; a brother, Jack (Shirley) Larson, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Betty Larson, of Grand Rapids; along with nephews, nieces and dear family friend, Debbie Olsen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert, on May 31, 2004.

John E. Fish
John E. Fish, 63, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Community United Methodist Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. Shirley Nelson officiating. Visitation 5-7 p.m. today in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour prior to service Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery.

John E. Fish, 63, of Gilbert died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born Jan. 16, 1941, in Hibbing to John and GeorgiaAnna (Lee) Fish. He was a graduate of Chisholm High School and later served the country as a U.S. Marine. He married Debra Niska on July 16, 1977, in the First Presbyterian Church in Eveleth. John worked as a salesman prior to working as the Gilbert recreation director from 1999 until April 2004.

John was an avid hunter, fisherman and sports enthusiast. He played basketball, football and baseball, however his enjoyment came from coaching youth sports and visiting over a cup of coffee with friends.

Survivors include his wife, Debra; children, Bradley J. Fish and fiancee Kate Lind of Gilbert, Courtney R. Fish of Gilbert, Paula (Geoff) Primeau of Hugo, Minn., Yvonne Stevens of Ohio and John L. Fish of Ohio; sisters, Gloria Dostal, Gea Backman and Pat Frederick, all of Chisholm; brothers, Tom (Vivian) Fish of Blaine and Jerry (Cheryl) Fish of Hibbing; nine grandchildren; his mother-in-law, June Niska, of Sparta; and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy; and his father-in-law, Ray Niska Sr.

Wilbert A. 'Lim' Kauppila
Wilbert A. 'Lim' Kauppila, 80, SERVICES: Memorial service 10 a.m. Wednesday celebrating Lim’s life at Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron. Visitation one hour prior to service. Memorials would be appreciated to Messiah Lutheran Church, HealthEast Hospice in St. Paul or the SMDC Foundation Heart Center. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Wilbert A. “Lim" Kauppila, 80, of Parkville died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in St. Paul surrounded by loving family and friends.

He was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Mountain Iron to his parents, Nestor and Hilda Kauppila, the sixth of seven children. He attended Mountain Iron public schools, graduating from high school in 1942. From 1943 through 1946, Lim served on merchant ships in the Merchant Marine, where his primary responsibilities involved transporting American World War II servicemen home across the South Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

He married Helen E. Hill on Aug. 20, 1957, in Chisholm. They started their life together in Mountain Iron and later moved to Parkville, where together they resided, worked and raised their family for nearly 40 years.

Lim worked for 37 years for U.S. Steel at the Stevens Mine in Aurora, and the Pilotac and Minntac plants in Mountain Iron, retiring in 1985. After working many years as a millwright craftsman, he was promoted into numerous maintenance planning and foreman positions of increasing responsibility. He was a meticulous and consummate craftsman, able to create, design, build, install, maintain and repair virtually anything, and innumerable grateful people were the fortunate recipients of his limitless talent and generosity. Their homes and gardens were much more beautiful and functional thanks to Lim.

He is survived by his devoted children, Steven of Anchorage, Alaska, and Lois of St. Paul; his “third kid,’’ John Kingston; best friend, Tom Kingston; favorite dog, Louie; and sisters, Helen Nordman of Mountain Iron and Florence (Ray) Koski of Britt; as well as several nieces and nephews and a host of wonderful and valued friends.

He was preceded in death by Helen, his loving wife of 39 years; his parents; brothers, Helmer “Ham,’’ Ray “Bucko,’’ and Vern; and a sister, Helmi Komulaine.

Ludwig L. Lamprecht
Ludwig L. Lamprecht, 85, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Peter Muhich will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Pallbearers are Andrew Westby, Adam Westby, Joseph Paschke, Tim Harkonen, David Bunting and Nathan Helgren.

Ludwig L. Lamprecht, 85, of Blaine and formerly of Hibbing, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at the Sterling House Assisted Living in Blaine, Minn.

He was born Sept. 22, 1918, in Chisholm, to Ludwig and Mary (Mickelich) Lamprecht. He was a lifelong resident of the Hibbing area. He was a veteran of World War II and was there on Omaha Beach during D-day. He was employed as a transit man, surveyor for U.S. Steel. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he was an usher. He was also a member of the VFW Post 8510 and the Kiwanis Club of Hibbing. Mr. Lamprecht was well known in this area for his talent in horseshoe competition. In his later years, he loved to dance and shoot pool on a regular basis.

He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Katherine Elliot of Hibbing, Barbara (Robert) Fellerer of Lino Lakes, Minn., and Gail (Jerry) Cooke of Magna, Utah; a brother, Robert (Florence) Lamprecht of Hoyt Lakes; a sister, Helen Putkonen of Hibbing; seven grandchildren, Joseph Paschke, Nicole Paschke, Laura Bunting, Andrew Westby, Adam Westby, Nathan Helgren, and Jennifer Anderson; six great-grandchildren, Jenna, Brianna, Aaron, Kylee, Rylan, and Baylor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Mary (Mickelich) Lamprecht; his wife, Caroline, in 1992; and his great-grandson, Kevin Dostal, in 1998.

Connie Sue Hagen
Connie Sue Hagen, 41, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. The Rev. Clem Gustin, OSB, will officiate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus, and will continue for one hour prior to the Mass Friday at the church. Pallbearers will be her brothers, Dale Hagen, Mike Hagen, Dick Hagen, Ron Hagen, Bernie Hagen, and Gary Hagen. Honorary pallbearers will be her two sons and her nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Buhl. Arrangements are by the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.

Connie Sue Hagen, 41, of Buhl, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth.

She was born Dec. 11, 1962, in Chisholm, to Floyd and Vera (Tobias) Hagen. She was a member of Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church and had worked at the Slovenian National Home Bar in Chisholm, where she tended bar and did cooking for various functions. She was an excellent cook, and she also enjoyed baking cookies for all of her family and friends for any occasion, especially at Christmastime.

She is survived by two sons, Tyler Pulford, and Travis Pulford, both of Buhl; her mother, Vera Hagen of Buhl; eight siblings, Shirley (Mike) Thelen of Park Rapids, Minn., Richard (Yvonne) Hagen of Virginia, Gary Hagen of Park Rapids, Minn., Bernie Hagen of Buhl, Ron (Rosemary) Hagen of Park Rapids, Minn., Michael (Peggy) Hagen of Hibbing, Judy (Michael) Woolery of Park Rapids, Minn., and Dale Hagen of Buhl; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Hagen in 1994.

Patti Jo Knoer
Patti Jo Knoer, 50, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. Rev. Dennis Paulson will be the officiant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. Interment will be in the Cook Community Cemetery.

Patti Jo Knoer, 50, of Cook, entered her heavenly home on Monday, August 23, 2004, peacefully and with her loving family by her side. With Christ's help she fought a courageous battle with cancer.

Patti was born on March 27, 1954, in Heron Lake, Minnesota, to Gene and Marilyn (Nylund) Jenkins. In 1966 the family moved to Fairbault, Minn., where she graduated from High School in 1972. She then attended St. Cloud University. She married Douglas L. Knoer on October 21, 1978, and together they built their home in Cook. Born to this union were 2 children, Joyce Nancy and Paul Douglas. Patti was active in scouting for many years and loved the time spent with all the children. She was very involved with Trinity Lutheran Church. Patti’s strong faith and love of community was evident every day of her wonderful life. She will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by husband, Douglas,; 2 children, Paul and Joyce, both at home; her parents, Gene and Marilyn Jenkins of Cook,; 3 brothers, Mike (Nancy) Jenkins of Zimmerman, Minn., Scott (Penny) Jenkins of Duluth, and David (Lorri) Jenkins of Elk River, Mn,; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Clara and John Nylund, and Harold and Mildred Jenkins.

Mollie Bizal
Mollie Bizal, 90, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Frank Perkovich celebrating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Chisholm.

Mollie Bizal, 90, of Negaunee, Mich., and formerly of Chisholm, entered eternal life on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.

She was born Oct. 25, 1913, in Chisholm, to John and Margaret (Godnick) Hren. She was a graduate of Chisholm High School. Mollie was united in marriage to Stanley Bizal in 1933, and resided in Chisholm until September 2000, when she went to live with her daughter in Marquette, Mich. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, the church choir, St. Anne’s Lodge No. 156 KSKJ, and the SNPJ Lodge.

Survivors include her children, Virginia (Bill) Kilpela of Marquette, Mich., Richard Bizal of Mountain Iron; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Julia (Ludwig) Capan of Virginia; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Techar, and Margaret Pakiz; brothers, John and Frank Hren.
