Agnes H. Iveson
Agnes H. Iveson, 89, SERVICES: Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Green Larsen Mortuary in International Falls. Condolences may be left at www.greenlarsen.com. Arrangements are with Green-Larsen Mortuary, Inc.

Agnes H. (Jackopich) Iveson, 89, of Virginia, died Oct. 9, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Agnes was born Jan. 6, 1915, the daughter of Martin Sr. and Mary Jackopich in Greaney, Minn. Agnes was a professional cook at the First Falls Hospital, and Littlefork School for a number of years. She married Archie Iveson in August 1947, and they made their home in Littlefork for many years. Agnes enjoyed cooking, her garden and flowers. She also loved picking berries, and was devoted to her family.

Agnes will be missed by family and friends.

Agnes is survived by her sisters, Mary A. Collard of Virginia, Jennie M. Salo, of Virginia, and Theresa (John) Gonzales of Ridgecrest, Calif.; her brothers, Gabriel and Rudolph Jackopich of Greaney; and sister-in-law, Edna M. Jackopich; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Archie Iveson of Littlefork; her parents, Martin Sr. and Mary Jackopich; sisters, Margaret Jackopich, Anna Pianfetti, Angela Caucci; also her brothers, Martin Jr., Joseph, Louis and Tony; along with three sisters-in-law, Francis (Martin) Jackopich, Lois Jackopich Ableman, and Julia (Rudolph) Jackopich.

Lawrence ‘Bud’ VanHooser
Lawrence ‘Bud’ VanHooser, 77, SERVICES: Memorial service in remembrance of Bud will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Kertnz Brothers Funeral Chapel, with Deacon Grey Hutar officiating. Lawrence “Bud’’ VanHooser, 77, of Ely died suddenly Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at his home.

He was born Oct. 14, 1926, in Bancroft, Wis., to Henry and Mattie (Funk) VanHooser. He attended school in Bancroft. On Sept. 25, 1948, he married Mary Ann Smokrovich in Hibbing. Bud was a resident of Ely for more than 50 years while working at Reserve Mining until his retirement. His generosity was well known around the holidays when he made his famous potica and apple strudels for many to enjoy. Bud often could be found dancing the jitterbug to his favorite bands. A quiet man with a great sense of humor, Bud was a loving husband, father, grandfather and recent great-grandfather. He was a dear friend and will be missed by many. Bud was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army and was a member of Ely Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2717.

Bud leaves behind his only daughter, Sharon (Bill) Skradski, of Ely; a grandson, Jason (Melanie) Skradski, of Robbinsdale, Minn., along with his great-grandson, Cade; his sole surviving sibling, Beulah Potter, of Ely; his special friend whom he loved dearly, Ann Oikari, of Chisholm; Ann’s daughters, Sandy Oikari, Carol (Ken) Kerr and her children Jim and Mary Beth, Lori and Mark and grandsons Tim and Joe; and his four-legged pal, Miki.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and siblings, Donna, Clayton, Hope, Katie, June, Gladys, Bonnie, Glennis and Jackie.

Patrick C. Boyle
Patrick C. Boyle, 86, SERVICES: Memorial service 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Vianny Church, Gallatin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mid South Chapter, 4004 Hillsboro Pike, Suite 219B, Nashville, TN 37215. Arrangements are by Cole & Garrett Funeral Home of Hendersonville.

Patrick C. Boyle, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, after a long illness.

He was born in Superior, Wis., lived in Virginia, Minn., and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He served as a U.S. Marine during World War II. He spent most of his working career in the tire and rubber industry. He retired as chief chemist from Gates Rubber Co./Armstrong Tire Co. Following his retirement, he spent a number of years as a substitute teacher for the Sumner County School District in Hendersonville, Tenn. Pat loved coaching and following his children’s academic and athletic activities. He had wry wit and always enjoyed a good joke.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eva Boyle; children, Michael (Pat) Boyle of Las Vegas, Nev., Suzanne Boyle of Windsor, Conn., David (Barbara) Boyle of Austin, Texas, James (Rosemary) Boyle of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and John (Beverly) Boyle of Nashville, Tenn; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Aili Lahti
Aili Lahti, 95, SERVICES: A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Aurora in the fellowship hall.

Aili Lahti, 95, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at the White Community Hospital and Convalescent Care Center in Aurora.

She was born Aug. 8, 1909, in Embarrass to Emil and Alma Erickson. She married Otto Lahti in 1929. She worked various jobs, from a cook in the lumber camps to housekeeper and dog sitter. She mended nets for many fishermen, baked many loaves of bread and “biscuit,’’ knit many pairs of slippers and loved to travel to visit relatives. Following the death of her husband in 1968, she lived alone in her apartment until suffering a stroke two weeks prior to her death.

She is survived by three daughters, Elladore (Roy) Leiviska of Aurora, Elvilda (Richard) Hillman of Wolvine, Va., and Ardella (Carl) Glavan of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto; grandsons, Bruce and Michael Hillman; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Leiviska; three brrothers and three sisters.

Howard E. Leikas
Howard E. Leikas, 75, SERVICES: As per his request, there will be no formal funeral service. Burial will be in Leiding Cemetery in Orr. Arrangements are by Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Howard E. Leikas, 75, of Virginia died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

He was born Dec. 25, 1928, in Orr to Gabrial and Aino (Valimaki) Leikas. He attended school in Orr and graduated from Cook High School. He retired from the Army as an analyst after nearly 30 years of service.

Survivors include one nephew, Howard M. (Carla) Leikas, of Mountain Iron and a great-niece, Mattalyn Leikas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John G. Leikas, in 2000.

Kaela Irene Mellesmoen,
Kaela Irene Mellesmoen, SERVICES: Private family services were held. Arrangements were by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Kaela Irene (Lesemann) Mellesmoen, three days old, was taken into the arms of the angels on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004.

She was born Oct. 6, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center to Amanda Lesemann and Gary Mellesmoen Jr. of Embarrass. Kaela was then transferred to the NICU at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. She was baptized on Oct. 8, 2004.

Survivors include her father and mother, Amanda Lesemann and Gary Mellesmoen Jr. of Embarrass; a sister, Kassandra; maternal grandparents, Ben and Kay Lesemann, of Tower; paternal grandparents, Gary and Joan Mellesmoen of Soudan and Kathy Dethloff of Tower; aunts, Donna (Todd) Lemmons, Teresa (Dave) Debevec and Julie (Kurt) Winans, all of Mountain Iron, and Chris Lesemann and Tammy Mellesmoen of Virginia; and numerous cousins.

David Waisanen
David Waisanen, 60, SERVICES: Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday in Rauha Cemetery in Palo, with the Rev. Brian Birk officiating. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

David Waisanen, 60, of Pineville died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born April 6, 1944, to Leonard and Emma (Beck) Waisanen. He attended school in Aurora and worked as a truck driver for many years.

He is survived by several cousins, friends and care-givers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John.

Donald J. ‘Don’ Merila
Donald J. ‘Don’ Merila, 84, SERVICES: Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 303 E. 23rd St., in Hibbing. The Rev. Ramon Olson will officiate. Inurnment in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing will follow. Services provided by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Hibbing. Donald J. "Don" Merila, 84, of Hibbing, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in the Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

John ‘Johnny’ Smolich
John ‘Johnny’ Smolich, 86, SERVICES: Funeral at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aurora. The Rev. Brian Birk will officiate. Visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and for one hour before the service at the church. Burial with military honors by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Hospice Program.

John M. “Johnny’’ Smolich, 86, lifelong resident of Aurora, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his home with the tender, loving care of his children and St. Mary’s Hospice nurses, following a two-year battle with lung cancer.

He was born July 4, 1918, in Aurora to Anton and Helena (Pirnat) Smolich. He was a 1936 graduate of Aurora High School and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 3027, completing one tour. On Aug. 21, 1940, he married his high school sweetheart, Violet Mattson. They remained in the Aurora area until he took a welding position in the Butler Shipyard in Superior, Wis. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, received his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Center and served in World War II.

Following the war he worked for Lake Mine as a welder and later transferred to Erie Mining Company. He retired from LTV Steel Mining with 35 years of service as a maintenance supervisor. John was a fun, busy man who always had a smile and a sense of humor. He enjoyed playing the harmonica, hunting, fishing, gardening, planting trees, riding snowmobiles and ATVs and especially making mini pies and doughnuts. He was a retired volunteer firefighter, a volunteer at the White Community Hospital and a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. He was a member of the Aurora Senior Citizens, an active tree plantation operator and a member of the Quayle-Shuster-Truman-Muhich American Legion Post 241 and the Northern Minnesota Chapter 119 of CCC Alumni.

Survivors include his children, David Smolich of Aurora, Elinor (George) Baum of Tucson, Ariz., and Linda (Tom Raley) Murphy of Dallas, Texas; brother, Henry “Hank’’ Smolich of Burbank, Calif.; sister-in-law, Martha Smolich, and her daughter Kathy of Aurora; two granddaughters, Jacqueline Mueller of Henderson, Nev., and Jodi Jones of Forth Worth, Texas; great-grandchildren, Devon, Dylan, Baillie and Alex; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and special friend, Dagne Virant of Aurora.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet, in 1997; brothers, Tony, Albin, Wes, Rudy, Frank and Ed; and sister, Helen.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, the Sunday Megan’s Restaurant group and Martha Palm’s baking exchange and coffee club.

Berniece Bailey Donovan
Berniece Bailey Donovan, 84, SERVICES: Funeral at noon on Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Patricia Gillespie officiating. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Battered Women’s Shelter, Shelter for Unwed Mothers or the Virginia Public Library. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Berniece “Bunny’’ Bailey Donovan, 84, of Virginia, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born on May 15, 1920, in Minneapolis to Richard R. and Berniece (Lee) Bailey and grew up in Virginia. She was a homemaker. She married Larry J. Donovan on April 29, 1944. She moved to Naples, Fla., in 1967 with her loving husband, Larry. They had been seasonal residents on Pelican Lake at Orr.

Bunny is survived by her seven children, Dan (Katie) Donovan of Mendota Heights, Minn., Lonny (Trisha) Donovan of Englewood, Colo., Leesa (Jim) Gray of Orr, Richard (Karen) Donovan of Jericho, Vt., Cynthia Donovan of East Lansing, Mich., Mary Donovan of Enid, Okla., and Lance (Jane) Donovan of Naples, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry; one sister, Rebecca Strand; and one brother, Richard Roberts Bailey Jr.

William Rahtel
William Rahtel, 82, SERVICES: A private graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. today at the Gilbert Cemetery. Msgr. Aleksander Suchan will officiate. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing.

William Rahtel, 82, of Gilbert died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at Golden Crest Nursing Home in Hibbing.

He was born Oct. 13, 1922, to Anthon and Josephine (Markovich) Rahtel in Gilbert. He was a lifelong resident of Gilbert and was employed with the city of Gilbert. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert and an honorary member of the Gilbert Curling Club.

He is survived by his brother, John Mestnick of Hibbing, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Lou Larson

Betty Lou Larson, 73, of Eveleth died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at her home.

She is survived by her husband Donald, two brothers, two sisters and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Roy H. Saarela
Roy H. Saarela, 75, SERVICES: Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Virginia with Pastor Nathan Sager officiating. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Roy H. Saarela, 75, of Virginia died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at his home.

He was born on April 3, 1929, in Pike Township to Daniel and Helia (Kopponen) Saarela and grew up there. He attended Pike School 14 and the Embarrass High School. Roy worked for Seppi Brothers Concrete Company from 1952 until 1990. He married Lois Marie Leppala on Oct. 23, 1959. They had been Virginia residents since 1972. Roy was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church and Teamsters Local 346 of Virginia, and was a former member of Virginia Moose Lodge 1117.

Survivors include his wife, Lois of Virginia; one son, Roy Michael (Jan) Saarela of Burnsville, Minn.; three daughters, Laureen (Seppo) Mahonen of Virginia, Lynn Hedman of Virginia and LuAnn (Tom) Wingard of Elk River, Minn.; five grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Mahonen of Virginia, Mark (Karen) Wingard of Elk River, Melissa (fiance Zach Fossum) Wingard of Elk River and David Wingard of Elk River; one great-grandson, Ryan Thomas Wingard; three brothers, Albert (Pauline) Saarela of Butte, Mont., Robert (Jean) Saarela of Seattle, Wash., and Daniel (Marlene) Saarela of Biwabik; one sister, Helen Sambum of Chisholm; and one sister-in-law, Alice Saarela of Proctor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence Nelson and Lillia King; and one brother, Richard Saarela.
