George A. 'Dodie' Spolar
George A. 'Dodie' Spolar, 81, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John O’Donnell as celebrant. Visitaiton one hour prior to service at the church. Burial, with military honors accorded by the Virginia Servicemen’s Color Guard, will be in the veterans section of Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements are by Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

George A. “Dodie’’ Spolar, 81, of Virginia died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 29, 1923, in Virginia to George and Mary (Elias) Spolar and was a lifelong Virginia resident. He was a graduate of Virginia High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operations. He married LaVerne “Lovie’’ Johnson on June 18, 1949, in Virginia. George retired from U.S. Steel in 1982 after many years of service. He was the owner/operator of the Gopher Motel in Virginia for 30 years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Holy Spirit Catholic Church, both of Virginia; a past president of Steelworkers Union Local 1938 of Virginia; past member of the board of directors of the Virginia Credit Union; member of AAD Temple Shrine of Duluth; Virginia Chapter 77 of the Royal Arch Masons; Eveleth Commandery No. 35; Virginia Blue Lodge 264; Vera-Saba Shrine Club of Virginia; Range Marching Patrol; member of Pratt-Volden-Mickelson- Anderson American Legion Post 239 of Virginia and was a lifelong member of Crellin-Tini Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1113 of Virginia; and was involved in pasty making at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Dad was very proud of being married for 55 years. He enjoyed dancing, dining out and taking vacations every winter with his lifelong companion, our mother. We three children, son-in-law, granddaughter, Kiisa, and special friend Princess will miss him forever.

Survivors include his wife, Lovie Spolar, of Virginia; a daughter, Shelley (Michael) Riley, of Virginia; two sons, Craig Spolar and Jeff Spolar, both of Virginia; a granddaughter, Nikki; two brothers, James (Shirley) Spolar of Iron and John (Pat) Spolar of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sisters, Ann Gentilini and Mary Jane Novak, both of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rudy, Louie, Peter and Joseph; and two sisters, Katherine Lang and Rose Martz.

Leonard M. Erickson
Leonard M. Erickson, 89, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl, with the Rev. Jon Wild as celebrant. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by the Knights of Columbus rosary at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm; visitation will continue for one hour Wednesday prior to service at the church. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl.

Leonard M. Erickson, 89, of Buhl died peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Cornerstone Villa in Buhl.

He was born Sept. 20, 1915, in Reliance, S.D., to August and Emma (Christopherson) Erickson. The youngest of six brothers and two sisters, he was the last surviving member of his generation. He loved to tell stories of growing up on the prairies of South Dakota. In the 1930s he worked on the farms and played the banjo for house dances around central South Dakota.

During World War II he served in the Army’s 665th Field Artillery Battalion in France and Germany. During the war, on a blind date, he met the love of his life, Mary Markas, of Kinney. They were united in marriage on Sept. 10, 1943. They recently celebrated 61 years together. After the war, he worked in the mines and at various janitorial jobs, finally getting a job at the Minnesota Highway Department in Virginia, from which he retired in 1981.

He loved to tinker around the house, fixing things, fixing cars, drinking coffee in his favorite easy chair, building fires for picnics at Lake Leander with the “famous black pan,’’ and most of all puttering in his big gardens and particularly the potato patch in Kinney, which yielded bushels and bushels of potatoes for us all.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl; Knights of Columbus — Buhl Council 5612; and the former Bennett-Butkovich American Legion Post 246 of Buhl.

Most of all, he loved his children and grandchildren and would eagerly wait for them to come and visit. We will miss you deeply. We will forever love you and whenever we gather we will laugh, cry and share cherished memories of you.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E.; children, Patricia (Jerry) Belle-Isle of Minneapolis, Alice Levings of Buhl, L. Peter (Karen) Erickson of Minneapolis, Edith (Keith) Haydel of Veracruz, Mexico, Elsa Erickson of Duluth, Steve (Rita) Erickson of Emerado, N.D., and Evelyn (Jerry) Moscatelli of Duluth; grandchildren, Dominique, Nicole, Stephanie, Celeste, Anita, Brian, Jason, Hans, Joren, Michael, Jonathan, Thea and Sam; great-grandchildren, Razi and Jasmine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.

Emma H. Jonas
Emma H. Jonas, 92, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Assemblies of God Church in Menahga, with the Rev. Allan Reini officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Alajoki Cemetery. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Emma H. Jonas, 92, of rural Mountain Iron died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at her home.

She was born Jan. 11, 1912, to Henry and Hilda (Lalli) Mursu in Blueberry Township, Wadena County, where she grew up and attended school. She married Theodore Jonas on June 30, 1934, in Runeberg Township. They lived in the Menahga area, Deer River and Grand Rapids until 1960, when they settled in Vancouver, Wash. Emma was a proficient knitter, keeping children and grandchildren warm with mittens and stockings. She loved gardening and when asked if she would ever return to Minnesota, she replied, “No at Hazel Dell I get ripe tomatoes!’’ She enjoyed crappy fishing, blueberry picking and traveling. She was bilingual speaking and writing in Finnish and English. She will be missed by her family.

Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Theodore; five children, James Jonas of Ball Club, Charles (Adele) Jonas of Moise, Mont., Vincent (Sally) Jonas of Mountain Iron, Irene Jonas of Vancouver, Wash., and Michael Jonas of Mosier, Ore.; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Sylvia Moore of Corning, Calif., Ellen (Ray) Arlich of Goodland and Martha (George) Kiefel of Buena Park, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Martha Waddell; sister, Edna O’Hern; and a brother, Jerome Mursu.

John 'Jack' Edward Lewis
John 'Jack' Edward Lewis, 55, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard will be at the Polish Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the family. Arrangements are by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

John ‘Jack’ Edward Lewis, 55, of Duluth, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at his home.

He was born May 23, 1949, in Duluth, to Edward M. and Pauline L. (Kwiecinski) Lewis, and he was a graduate of Hermantown High School. After graduation, Jack was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1969 to 1973, having served on the USS Ranger. After the service, he returned to Minnesota, living in Eveleth while working for U.S. Steel from 1973 to 1990, when he returned home to Hermantown. He was currently working at the Duluth International Airport as security screener for TSA. Jack was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He also loved any type or racing, and he loved to woodwork.

He is survived by his children, Jackie Lewis of Rainier, Wash., Mark (Christina) Lewis of Hermantown, and Melanie (Matt) Pionk of Yelm, Wash.; six grandchildren, Lacey Lewis, Alexys and Samantha Lewis, Dillon, Ashley, and Brandon Pionk.

Eino M. Laino
Eino M. Laino, 91, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. The Rev. Peter Muhich will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing. Pallbearers will be Adrian Norman, Claude Morrow, Bruce Norman, and Jerry Koski. Arrangements are by the Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Eino M. Laino, 91, of Hibbing, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, in the Golden Crest Health Care Center, Hibbing.

He was born March 3, 1913, in Hibbing, to Eric and Hilda Laino. He had worked as a carpenter and foreman for E.W. Coons Construction Co., and he loved the outdoors and trapping. He was a member of the Trappers Association and the Hibbing Catholic Community.

He is survived by his wife, Florence of Hibbing; a stepdaughter, Beverly (Robert) Harding of Hibbing; a sister, Martha Seppa of Eveleth; a nephew, Dale (Carmen) Seppa; seven stepgrandchildren, Adrian III, Jane, Debra, Joan, Denise, Diana, and Danielle; five stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine Laino; his parents; brothers, Arnie, and John; sisters, Selma, and Helen; and a stepson, Adrian Norman.

John ‘Willie’ Sjoberg
John ‘Willie’ Sjoberg, 81, SERVICES: A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sherry Baier’s home, 1555 N. 20th Ave. E., Ely. Burial will be at a later date. John “Willie’’ William Sjoberg, 81, of Ely, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, surrounded by his family at the Ely-Bloomenson Hospital.

He was born on May 28, 1923, in Section Thirty near Ely to John and Fannie (Koskela) Sjoberg. Willie fought as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II. On April 27, 1946, he married LaVerne “Lovey’’ Ranta in Virginia. Willie worked at the Pioneer Mine and later as a foreman at Reserve Mining. He also worked in construction and in his later years as a “sidewalk foreman.’’ Willie loved to hunt and fish and was a guide on Basswood Lake.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Winton Drift Busters and a lifetime member of Ely Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2717. He was a very active member of the Ely Ski Club, serving as a jumper, coach and judge. Willie played an instrumental role in the development of the Hidden Valley Ski Jump Area. He was selected to be part of the security team for the ski jump competition at the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Willie is survived by three children, Sherry (Bob) Baier, Gerald Sjoberg and Greg (Anna) Sjoberg, all of Ely; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Jokela; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lovey, in 1993; and two sons, Lee, in 1992 and Butch, in 1998.

Hubert Carl Johnson
Hubert Carl Johnson, 85, SERVICES: Celebration of Hubert’s life will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Covenant Church in Virginia. To commemorate his life, the family would like all in attendance to wear colorful clothing. The Rev. Roger Johnson and the Rev. Gerald Stenberg will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Mesaba Range Post No. 1172 VFW of Eveleth. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Hubert Carl Johnson died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, after a brief illness.

He was born April 29, 1919, in Aurora, to Anna and Axel Johnson. He lived his life in the Wolf area and in Eveleth. He graduated from Eveleth High School and Eveleth Junior College, then spent six years serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Portland during World War II, spending most of that time in the Pacific Theatre. The Portland earned 16 Battle Stars, the most decorated ship of that war. Hubert was very proud of his time in the Navy and yearly attended Portland reunions and maintained those important relationships. Hubert married Lois Tamte in 1946 and has three daughters, 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He worked for Minnesota Power for 35 years, retiring as district manager. He worked with the Eveleth Civic Association, the Optimists Club, the Eveleth Heritage Committee, and the Mountain Iron Zoning Commission. He was a participant in Toastmasters. He faithfully attended and supported the First Covenant Church in Virginia. Hubert was known for his fantastic memory, his love of history, and his story telling. He loved his family greatly and enjoyed teasing his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; his daughters, Bev (Steve) Sellnow of St. Cloud, Minn., Peg (DuWayne) Johnston of Gillette, Wyo., Jean (Rich) Ogilvie of Wolf; 10 grandchildren, Beth (Aaron) Ganskow, Luke (Sara) Nyberg, Kristin Sellnow, Faith Johnston, Nathan Sellnow, Jonathon Sellnow, Chris Ogilvie, Erin Nyberg, Zech Ogilvie, and Kelsey Sellnow; three great-grandchildren, Hudson and Rachel Nyberg, and Tristan Ganskow; a sister, Elsa Johnson of Chicago; a sister-in-law, Betty Johnson; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Axel; sister, Mary Ann; and sister-in-law, Margaret.

Dale John Uren
Dale John Uren, 73, SERVICES: Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius Catholic Church in Babbitt. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home of Coon Rapids.

Dale John Uren, 73, of Babbitt died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, in Coon Rapids, Minn.

He was born and raised in Eveleth and was the son of the late James Wesley and Ruby (Graves) Uren. He graduated from Eveleth High School in 1949. He then married his first and only love, Pearl Blanche Rozinka, on June 30, 1951. They moved to Babbitt in 1970. Together they raised four children and three grandchildren. Dale worked in the mines for 50 years. He worked for U.S. Steel, Reserve, and retired from LTV Steel in 1999. He spent most of his time there as a supervisor. Dale enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his true passion was the time he spent in his garage doing his woodwork. He built anything from bunk beds to a cabin he finished last summer. When he wasn’t doing that you can bet Papa was working on one of his many crossword puzzles. There aren’t words to express what he meant to his family and he will be sadly missed by all.

Dale is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years, Pearl, who still resides with her granddaughter, Samantha, in Coon Rapids; three children, Thomas (Gayle) Uren of Coon Rapids, Vickie Sherman of Babbitt and Dayle (Tom) Specht of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren, Tanya (Eric) Pitoscia of Duluth, Adrianne Uren of Coon Rapids, Samantha (Nathan) Anderson of Coon Rapids, Zachary Uren of Coon Rapids, Nicholas Sherman of Duluth and Sara, Mathew and Alexandra Specht, all of Houston, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Gavin Sherman, Vinny Pitoscia and Nadia Sherman; a sister, Deanne (Norman) Fisher; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Donald “Bud’’; and one loving son, Robert “Robbie.’’

Peter J. Maki
Peter J. Maki, 56, SERVICES: Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild as celebrant. Visitation one hour prior to Mass at the church Friday. Inurnment will follow in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Peter J. Maki, 56, of Chisholm died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 10, 1948, in Hibbing to Eino J. and Mary A. (Zevnick) Maki. He was a 1966 graduate of Chisholm High School and was a lifelong Iron Range area resident.

He was an Air Force veteran. Peter owned and operated the Hair Stylists in Hibbing for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm, was an active member and board member of the Range Artists Association. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed his winter travels with his cousins. He was a great uncle and a gentle man.

Survivors include his brother, Tom (Geri) Maki, of Milwaukee, Wis.; a sister, Sue (Joe) Tonko, of Lake Vermilion-Tower; two nephews and a niece and a great-niece; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sidney Emerson Smart Jr.
Sidney Emerson Smart Jr., 50, SERVICES: Funeral service will be 9 a.m. Thursday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Arnie Autio, a family friend will lead the service. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

Sidney Emerson Smart Jr., 50, of Aurora, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at his home. He was born Jan. 16, 1954, in Virginia to Sidney E. and Violet (Roberg) Smart Sr. He was a graduate of Virginia High School and later attended Alexandria Technical College for welding. He worked as a welder for the Local Pipefitters Union on the Iron Range and in Duluth. He married Christle Johnson in 1994 in Tahoe, Nev.

Sidney was a member of the Aurora ATV club and was an avid hunter and fisherman who especially enjoyed fishing in Alaska with his brother.

Survivors include his sister, Carol (William) Leppala of Twain Harte, Calif.; children, Jade Smart and Heather Smart, both at home; former wife, Christle Smart of Aurora; several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry in August 2003.

Clarence J. Boyanowski
Clarence J. Boyanowski, 93, SERVICES: Memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at New Life Lutheran Church, 18975 Lake George Blvd. (Anoka Co. Rd. 9), Oak Grove, Minn. Cremation Society of Minnesota 612-825-2435.

Clarence J. Boyanowski, 93, passed away peacefully at Birchwood Health Care Center, Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, with family at his side.

He was preceded in death by Jeannette, his wife of 59 years; his parents, Leon and Anna Boyanowski; brother Chester; sister Margaret; uncles, aunts, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a nephew.

He is survived by brother, Leon; daughters, Sally Kucheska (John) and Mary Brasgala, (Arthur); grandchildren, Don and Jim Kivimaki, Stacey Quesnel, and Brian Hoskins (Buffy); great-grandchildren, Mandy, Eric (Ashley), and Brandon Quesnel, Tori, Ryan, Lucas, and Adam Kivimaki and Bryanna Hoskins; great-great grandson, Dakota Quesnel; brothers-in-law, Harold Holets and Frank Parker; many friends and relatives.
