Mark G. Buria
Mark G. Buria, 49, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Colusa, Calif. Burial will follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday with a rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made in Mark’s name to the Our Lady of Lourdes School, 745 Ware Ave., Colusa, Calif., 95932. Services are by the McNary-Moore Funeral Service in Colusa, Calif.

Mark G. Buria, 49, of Colusa, Calif., died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 28, 1955, in Red Bluff, Calif., to Rose and the late Edward Buria, formerly of Mountain Iron. Mark resided in Willows, Calif., for three years when he moved with his parents to Colusa, when his father became refuge manager of the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge. He has resided in Colusa since 1958.

Mark attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and graduated from Colusa High School in 1973. He also graduated from AIRCO Vocational Institute in Oakland, where he continued his early training to become a certified welder. He also attended Yuba College. He owned and operated Mark’s Weld and Repair for the past 11 years, his specialty being ornamental welding. He designed and made the arch over the gates at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery and the gate in the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows as well as in Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

Mark enjoyed hunting and fishing, despite being handicapped with the effects of polio, which he had since he was seven years old. He was also an avid Raiders fan.

Mark is survived by his mother, Rose Buria of Colusa, Calif.; a brother, Bernard (Molly) Buria of Delta, Colo.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Buria.

John F. Johnson
John F. Johnson, 79, TENTATIVE SERVICES: Visitation one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Friday at the Hope Lutheran Church in Embarrass. Burial will be in the Embarrass Cemetery. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

John F. Johnson, 79, of Virginia, formerly of Embarrass, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at his home.

John was born on Aug. 31, 1925, to Andrew and Ellen (Aho) Johnson in Verona, Mich. John was united in marriage to Jean Zuidmulder on Dec. 17, 1949, in Wakefield, Mich. He resided in Michigan working in the mining industry until moving to Embarrass in 1954. John was employed by Erie Mining Co., then retired from LTV Steel. During his retirement years, he enjoyed polka music, visiting friends and family and going for car rides.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Johnson of Virginia and Mark (Lori) Johnson of St. Michael, Minn.; one sister, Nancy (Rick) Lorentzen of Clio, Mich.; good friend and brother-in-law, Ervin Minier; caregiver, Pam Johnson; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean C. Johnson; daughter, Bonnie McDonald; siblings, Marlyss Coleman, Rueben, Duane and Robert Johnson and Priscilla Lafferty.

Mary Louise Smith
Mary Louise Smith, 92, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Catholic Church in Kingsford, Mich. Arrangements by Erickson, Rochon & Nash.

Mary Louise Smith, 92, formerly of Ely and Mountain Iron, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Kingsford, Mich.

She was born Feb. 15, 1912, in Norway, Mich., to Emil and Emma DeNeve. She married Urban Smith on Oct. 20, 1934. They moved to Ely in 1958 and to Mountain Iron in 1981. In 1995, she moved back to Kingsford.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Steve) Carey of Gilbert, Darlene (Don) Chartier of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; one son, Jack (Karen) Smith of Kingsford; seven grandchildren, Don (Terri), Dennis (Deb) Chartier, DeeAnn (Glenn) Leanna, Joanne (Walt) Howard, Mike (Maria) Smith, Jennifer (Mark) Kieren and Jeff (Becky) Carey; 13 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Taryn, Bradley and Tyler Chartier, Anthony Leanna, Jenna and Carly Howard, Madeline, Miranda and Logan Kieren, Camila and Nicole Smith and Amara Carey; one sister; three brothers; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years in 1986; her parents; four brothers; and two sisters.

Jane Z. Siegel
Jane Z. Siegel, 89, SERVICES: Graveside service was held Wednesday at Adas Israel Cemetery, Duluth. Memorials are preferred to donor’s favorite charity. Arrangements are by the Hodroff-Epstein Memorial Chapel in Minneapolis.

Jane Z. Siegel, 89, of St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of Virginia, died Wed, Nov. 10, 2004.

Survivors include her husband, John; daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis and Herman Gordon, Kay Ruth Weber; son, Elliot Siegel; brother, Alvin Sher; sister-in-law, Betty Sher; grandchildren, Stephen K. Gordon, Nicole M. Gordon, Deborah Weber and Miriam Weber; great-granddaughter, Robin Soronow; and also many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents, Frank and Rose Sher; brothers, Irving and Getzel (Lorraine) Sher; sister-in-law, Helen Sher.

Nora Louise Christensen
Nora Louise Christensen, 97, SERVICES: Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 4, in International Falls.

Nora Louise Christensen, 97, of Aurora, formerly of International Falls, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at White Community Nursing Facility in Aurora.

Survivors are her sons, Russell (Alice) Christensen of International Falls, Robert (Joellyn) Christensen of International Falls, Elliott (Marjorie) Christensen of Hoyt Lakes, and Donald Christensen of St. Paul; daughters, Virginia (Leon) Sweney of Hoyt Lakes, and Margaret (Mel) Scheirer of Minnetonka, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Thomas M. Menth
Thomas M. Menth, 48, SERVICES: Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Dayton, Minn. Visitation one hour prior to service. Inurnment will be in St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to Range Mental Health Center, Bell Building, 504 First St. N., Virginia, MN 55792. Thomas M. “Tommy’’ Menth, 48, of Virginia died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in his home.

He was born Feb. 21, 1956, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Michael and Arlene (McAlpine) Menth.

He is survived by his mother, Arlene Godfrey; his father, Michael Menth; brothers and sisters, Jeff Menth, Becky (Craig) Olson, Brian (Lisa) Menth, Mary Menth and John Menth; and many nieces and nephews.

Tommy’s family would like to thank the Range Mental Health Center and all of Tommy’s friends who have loved him and watched over him.

Virginia Zahaorsky Potter
Virginia Zahaorsky Potter, 78, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild and the Rev. Clem Gustin, OSC, as concelebrants. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm, and will continue one hour prior to service Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow in the Chisholm Cemetery.

Virginia Zahorsky Potter, 78, of Chisholm died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born May 27, 1926, in St. Paul, Minn., to Otto and Beda (Jackson) Lennberg. She grew up in Akeley, Minn., and was a 1944 graduate of Akeley High School and a 1947 graduate of Mounds-Midway School of Nursing in St. Paul. She also lived in Rushmore and Adrian, Minn., and Brookings and White Lake, S.D. She returned to Akeley, then moved to McGregor, then to Chisholm from 1969 to 1991, and then to Walker, Minn., from 1991 until returning to Chisholm in 1995.

She was united in marriage to Warren Potter on Sept. 14, 1991, in Walker. She worked as a registered nurse in various hospitals and also was an artist, specializing in rosemaling. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm and was active in its banner and decorating committee. She also was active with the Range Art Center and with many volunteer groups. She was an avid gardener, cross country skier and loved to dance. She enjoyed swimming and camping on 11th Crow Wing and loved hostessing the Chisholm Senior Girls Teas for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Warren; children, Jim (Mary) Zahorsky of Chisholm and Mary (Mark Hiel) Zahorsky of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Derrick Zahorsky Hammond, Andy and Jackie Zahorsky; brother, Roy (Mabel) Lennberg, of Baker City, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Violet; her first husband, Arthur Zahorsky, on Jan. 5, 1990; and her brothers, Earl and Harry Lennberg.

Frank E. 'Blackie' Sherek
Frank E. 'Blackie' Sherek, 92, SERVICES: Funeral service at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Deacon Herbert Riley will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour before the service. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Frank E. “Blackie’’ Sherek, 92, of Biwabik, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of White Community Hospital in Aurora.

He was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Biwabik to John and Frances Sherek, one of 11 children. He attended school in Biwabik and was a World War II Army veteran. He served with Gen. George S. Patton’s forces in Germany and in later years was able to revisit Germany and tour many of the areas where the battles had been fought, bringing back many memories and fond thoughts of friends in uniform.

Following his military service he returned to Biwabik and was employed at the Lake Mine and later Erie Mining Company. He retired from LTV Mining Company in 1974 as a mechanic. He married Irene Koski on July 26, 1947, in Biwabik.

Blackie was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. Along with his family, he thoroughly enjoyed numerous summers at the cabin on Wynne Lake, the site of many family gatherings, visits from friends and relatives, boating, swimming, parties, barbecues and of course, visits to the sauna. He especially enjoyed fishing on Wynne Lake, Sabin Lake, Lake Vermilion and the Boundary Waters. He continued fishing and gardening until health reasons forced him to stop. He was a talented gardener, always having one of the finest gardens in Biwabik, producing the best crops for the family table. He was tireless in anything he strived to do and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; daughter, Pamela (Mark) Winner of Holland, Mich.; stepsons, Gary (Sophia) Valimaki of Aurora and Rolly (Darlene) Valimaki of Mesa, Ariz.; brother, Louis Sherek of Biwabik; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John, Peter, Stanley, Tony and Joseph; four sisters, Anna, Margaret, Frances and Mary; and one son, Frank Edward, at birth.

James M. Salo
James M. Salo, 50, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community Christian Church, New Ipswich, N.H. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Home, Wilton, N.H.

James M. Salo, 50, of New Ipswich, N.H., died Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 2004, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Sharon, N.H.

He was born in Eveleth on Oct. 29, 1954, the son of the late Wilho and Signe (Matta) Salo. He was a 1972 graduate of the Macenic Regional High School in New Ipswich, N.H., and was a self-employed concrete floor contractor for more than 30 years. He enjoyed hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing and bicycling. He was also known in the trade of woodworking to be very highly skilled.

Survivors in his family include eight brothers, Alvin Salo of Inver Groves Heights, Minn., Stanley Salo of Cook, Wilmar Salo of Duluth, Harold Salo of Circle Pines, Minn., Sanford Salo of Eveleth, Robert Salo of Hovland, Minn., David Salo of New Ipswich, N.H., and Brian Salo of Ashby, Mass.; five sisters, Ethel Appicelli of Barnum, Minn., June Hamann of Gowen, Mich., Evelyn Korpi of Lake Worth, Fla., Elaine Valitalo of Lake Worth, Fla., and Fayeth LaFreniere of Brookline, N.H.; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mollie Spreitzer

Mollie Spreitzer, 91, of Ely, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in the Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home.

She was born on March 10, 1913, in Ely, to Joseph and Katherine (Judnich) Spreitzer. She attended Ely schools. Mollie was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing scrabble and solving crossword puzzles. She was a secretary for KSKJ Lodge 203, until it merged with Lodge 72. She crocheted lap afghans for the nursing home activities bazaars.

Mollie is survived by one brother, Bernard of Gainsville, Ga.; five sisters, Katherine Spreitzer and Josephine (Bernard) Pruse of Ely, Christine Knott of Lomita, Calif., Margaret Planton of Bradley, Ill., Genevieve Heriford of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Katherine; three brothers; and four sisters.

Martha Eckman
Martha Eckman, 93, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. The Rev. Elton Brown will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Rauha Cemetery in White Township.

Martha Eckman, 93, of Biwabik, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

She was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Floodwood, Minn., to Charles and Rita Aho. She attended school in Palo and later married Arvid Eckman. Martha was a homemaker and a resident of Biwabik for most of her life.

Martha is survived by her grandchildren, Larry (Gloria) Eckman of Aurora, and Susan (Jeff) VanDamme of Duluth; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arvid; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Eleanor Eckman; grandson, Allan; brothers, John and Arthur; and sisters, Inez Nordahl and Janice Savacool.

Phillip A. Tekautz
Phillip A. Tekautz, 65, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Major Donald G. Tekautz of the Salvation Army, St. Louis, Mo., will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery.

Phillip A. Tekautz, 65, of Eveleth, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

He was born June 20, 1939, in Virginia, to Charles and Tressa (Anderson) Tekautz. He attended school at the DAC in Eveleth.

Phillip is survived by his twin sister, Phyllis; sisters, Jacquelyn, Marcia and Grace, all of Virginia; brothers, Donald of Virginia, Kenneth of Virginia, Bruce (Cecile) of Kentwood, Mich., and Keith (Judy) of Arden Hills, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Russell, Ray and Roy; and sisters, Jocelyn Tekautz and Charlotte Tingstad.
