Laddie Ondracek
Laddie Ondracek, 75, SERVICES: In accordance with Laddie’s request, there will be no funeral service or visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Iron Range Retriever’s Club, P.O. Box 661, Virginia, Minn., 55792. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Laddie Ondracek, 75, of Lake Vermilion-Cook, former resident of Arlington Heights, Ill., died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, as the result of a fatal automobile accident.

As a lake owner on Lake Vermilion, his passions were fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Donna (Paul) Grabek of Bartlett, Ill.

Helen V. Moberg
Helen V. Moberg, 87, SERVICES: Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Cook Community Cemetery. Memorials may be made out to Hibbing’s Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Perpetual Care Fund or to the donor’s choice. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Helen V. Moberg, 87, of Hibbing, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born on May 18, 1917, in Cook, to Per and Martha (Peterson) Moberg and grew up there. She worked for Casey Rexall Drug in Cook and the Security Envelope Co., in St. Paul, where she retired in 1984.

She was a member of the Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and attended Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hibbing.

Survivors include a brother, Palmer Moberg Sr. of Hibbing; one niece, Sandra Moberg Walls of Champlin, Minn.; 10 nephews, Doug (Fern) Moberg of Hibbing, Vern (Donna) Moberg of Hibbing, Randy (Mavis) Moberg of St. Paul, Dan (Ann) Moberg of Hibbing, Myron Moberg of Canadensis, Penn., Ronald (Kerry) Moberg of Forest Lake, Minn., the Rev. Robert (Lynn) Moberg of Columbus, Wis., Peter (Karen) Moberg of Blaine, Minn., David (Jenifer) Moberg of St. Paul, and the Rev. Glenn (Karen) Berg-Moberg of St. Paul; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Moberg of Britt; a brother-in-law, Herbert (Jerry) Garrard of Hibbing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Priscilla; a brother, Eddie; a nephew, Palmer (Perry) Jr.

Vernon ‘Slim’ Nelson
Vernon ‘Slim’ Nelson, 95, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at noon Saturday at the Range Funeral Home in Hibbing. Captain Terry Selvage will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, and continue from 11 a.m. until the service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Vernon “Slim” Nelson, 95, of Side Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at the Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born May 11, 1909, to Miles and Mathilda “Tillie” (Wold) Nelson in Minneapolis. He grew up in Togo and graduated from North Central School of Agriculture, the first class of 1929 in Grand Rapids. He worked at various jobs in the Togo area. Vernon was united in marriage to Irene Dall on Feb. 2, 1940, in Silverdale. Following marriage, the couple lived in Bear River. Vernon attended welding school and operated Bear River Garage. They moved in 1947 to Side Lake, where Vernon worked on construction, welding and on bridges. He was known in the Side Lake area as a handy man, always helping people with whatever their needs were. He retired from CWDC as a supervisor, but never really retired. He was never after a dollar, but always had one. He was a member of I.U.O.E. No. 49, and of the Moose Lodge in Hibbing.

Surviving are his daughter, Janis (Stephen) Johnson of Grand Rapids; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene on Nov. 17, 1975; and brother, John Nelson.

Pearl K. Gilbertson
Pearl K. Gilbertson, 97, SERVICES: There will be a memorial graveside service at Sunnywood Garden, Grand Forks, N.D. in June 2005. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home, Virginia.

Pearl K. Gilbertson, 97, died November 30, 2004, at Cornerstone Villa, in Buhl.

Pearl Kathryn Hjelmstad Gilbertson was born Dec. 8, 1906, at Hatton, N.D. She married LeRoy Gilbertson in 1930. LeRoy died Jan. 29, 1987. They spent nearly all of their married life in Grand Forks, N.D. Pearl lived at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks for the past 12 years, and more recently Edgewood Vista, Virginia, and Cornerstone Villa, Buhl.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Erika) of Winona; Lynn (Joan) of Minneapolis; a daughter, Jean (Roger) Johansen of Britt; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Helen Balich
Helen Balich, 91, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm with Fr. Jon Wild celebrating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday. Interment will follow in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Helen Balich, 91, of Chisholm died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born Feb. 26, 1913, in Hibbing to Paul and Martha (Gozdanovich) Marinkovich. She was a 1931 graduate of Chisholm High School, attended the former Hibbing Junior College and was a lifelong Chisholm resident. Helen was united in marriage on Nov. 3, 1945, in Chisholm to John Balich. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm, its CCW, Slovenian Women’s Union and the Croation Fraternal Union.

Survivors include her siblings, Martha Anderson of Lakeland, Minn., Molly Ortman of Hibbing and Donald Marinkovich of Chisholm; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John on June 6, 1980; and four sisters, Mary Dragisich, Donna Persik, Anne Licari and Dorothy Skarich.

James M. Salo
James M. Salo, 50, SERVICES: Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Community Christian Church, Main Street, Ne Ipswich, N.H. Visitation was held Tuesday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 32 Maple St. Wilton, N.H.

James M. Salo, 50, died Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 2004, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Sharon, N.H.

He was born Oct. 29, 1954, in Eveleth, to the late Wilho and Signe (Matta) Salo. He was a 1972 graduate of the Macenic Regional High School in New Ipswich, N.H. and was a self-employed concrete floor contractor for more than 30 years. He enjoyed hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing, and bicycling. He was also known in the trade of woodworkingg to be very highly skilled.

He is survived by eight brothers, Alvin Salo of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Stanley Salo of Cook, Wilmar Salo of Duluth, Harold Salo of Circle Pines, Minn., Sanford Salo of Eveleth, Robert Salo of Hovland, Minn., David Salo of New Ipswich, N.H., and Brian Salo of Ashby, Mass.; five sisters, Ethel Appicelli of Barnum, June Hamann of Gowen, Mich., Evelyn Korpi of Lake Worth, Fla., Elaine Valitalo of Lake Worth, Fla., and Fayeth LaFreniere of Brookline, N.H.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Floyd in May 1974.

Rachael Aune Wahlberg
Rachael Aune Wahlberg, SERVICES: Memorial service Saturday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m. at First Lutheran Church of Ely with the Rev. John Bonk officiating. The family requests memorials to Ely Community Resources or First Lutheran Church of Ely in lieu of flowers. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. Rachael Aune (Rosdet) Wahlberg of Ely died on Dec. 2, 2004, after a brief illness.

She was born on April 29, 1916, in Ely to Jalmer and Emelia Rosdet. Rachel was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School and married Reino Wahlberg in 1938. Rachel worked at the Shipman Hospital, Ely Dairy, Lynn Hardware and the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home. Rachel had a deep love for gardening, flowers and feeding animals and birds.

She is survived by her sister, Aili Tantarri; her daughter, Emily Wahlberg of Ely; her sons, Jerome Wahlberg of Virginia and Rick (Dana) Wahlberg of Duluth; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew and four nieces. She is also survived by special friends Judy Wahlberg, Beth Hestetune, Tessa and Kosho.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Margaretha Winkelaar
Margaretha Winkelaar, 83, SERVICES: Funeral at 1 p.m. Saturday in Trinity Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes. The Rev. Elton Brown and the Rev. Brian Marshall will officiate. Visitation for one hour before the service at the church. Cremation will follow with burial in the Markham Cemetery in Colvin Township. Arrangements by the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Margaretha Henriette Gabrielle Winkelaar, 83, of Virginia, formerly of Hoyt Lakes, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of White Community Hospital in Aurora.

She was born Feb. 8, 1921, in the Dutch East Indies to Willem and Johanna (Engel) Borghardt. She attended school in the Dutch East Indies. She was held in a Japanese concentration camp from 1941 to 1945. On May 27, 1946, she married Johan Winkelaar in the Dutch East Indies. In 1948 they left Indonesia and moved to the Netherlands in 1957. In 1957 they immigrated to the United States with their children and made their home in Duluth until 1959. In 1959 they moved to Hoyt Lakes, where Margaretha was a homemaker and an active member of Trinity Methodist Church and its circle. She moved to Virginia in 1999.

Margaretha enjoyed knitting, crocheting, being with her sewing group in Hoyt Lakes and volunteering at the nursing facility at White Community Hospital. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and especially enjoyed being surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Bart (Christine) Winkelaar of Green Bay, Wis., and Karel (Brenda) Winkelaar of Tower; daughters, Ank (David) Kure of Virginia and Yolande (Anthony) Hakala of Markham; sisters, Corry Borremans of Holland and Willy Borghardt of Holland; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Johan; son, Casey; and grandson, Joseph Hakala.

Kenneth Sleeman
Kenneth Sleeman, 89, SERVICES: Visitation will be one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Virginia. The Rev. Brenda Kramer King will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Kenneth Sleeman, 89, of Virginia, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia. He was born May 24, 1915, to Vivian and Ann (Clemo) Sleeman in Iron River, Mich. He moved to Virginia with his family when he was two years old and lived there most of his life. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He owned and operated a Gambles Store in Eagle River, Wis. and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940. He was united in marriage to Eileen Blais in 1943 in Mississippi. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for 75 years and was a member of its Men’s Club. He was a member of Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post No. 239 of Virginia, the Lake 14 Club and was a former member of the Virginia Masonic Lodge No. 264 AF & AM.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen; daughter-in-law, Patricia Sleeman of Virginia; grandchildren, Troy Sleeman of Virginia, Heather (Shawn) Gulbranson of Eveleth, Brad (Diane) Sleeman of St. Paul; great-grandson, Branden Paul Gulbranson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Paul in 1996.

Margie Louise Hoglund
Margie Louise Hoglund, 71, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Joel Hastings will be celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation will follow the service with burial in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

Margie Louise Hoglund, 71, of Eveleth, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2004, in the Eveleth Health Services Park.

She was born June 3, 1933, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Charles and Vernie May (Stephens) Cooper. She attended school in Eveleth and later attended Virginia Junior College to pursue a career in social work. She married Joseph Hoglund on July 6, 1953, in St. Louis, Mo. The family moved to Eveleth in 1953 and Margie worked in various occupations. She was a seamstress at the shirt factories in Eveleth and Virginia, worked as a house cleaner for several families, and at the Deluxe Cafe. The family had lived in Virginia for approximately 10 years prior to returning to Eveleth.

She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and a former member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the former Holy Family parish. Margie enjoyed spending time with family and creating ceramics.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph of Eveleth; children, Annmarie Hoglund and her special friend Harold Clark of Virginia, and Mary (David) Rich of Virginia; grandchildren, Matthew Rich of Virginia and Charles Mills of Duluth; brother, Robert; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Joseph Jr.; and her sisters.

John D. Skerjance
John D. Skerjance, 59, SERVICES: A Funeral Mass service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Church, Hoyt Lakes. The Rev. David Forsman officiating. Reception immediately following the service at the church. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 218-624-5200.

John D. Skerjance, 59, of Hoyt Lakes, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was born Nov. 26, 1945, in Eveleth.

John married Luella Durham in 1968. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, motorcycling, snowmobiling and camping. John worked at Erie Mining and LTV Steel for 32 years, retiring in 1999.

John is survived by his wife, Luella (Durham) Skerjance of Hoyt Lakes; daughter, Sheri Jean Skerjance (special friend Judy Turner) of Tucson, Ariz.; son, John David Jr. Skerjance of Minneapolis; brothers, Joseph (Connie) Skerjance of Nashwauk, Ronald (Shirley) Engelstad of Fridley, Minn. and William (Gina) Engelstad of Hibbing; step-father, Conrad Engelstad of Hibbing; and grandson, Lucas John O’Neil of Biwabik.

He was preceded in death by mother, June P. Engelstad; father, Joseph A. Skerjance; sisters, Marie A. (Skerjance) Hogan and Barbra Jo Skerjance; brother, George (Buddy) Vidnich; grandparents, John and Helen Skerjance and Fred and Leona Angellar.

Italina DiGiamBattista
Italina DiGiamBattista, 86, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Michael Schmitz will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday, with recitation of the Rosary prior to the funeral. Interment will be at a later date. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.

Italina DiGiamBattista, 86, of Hibbing, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in her home. She was born on June 16, 1918, to Nicholas and Maria (Palazzari) DiGiamBattista in Hibbing. She was a lifelong resident of Hibbing.

She made her career as a nurse in the United States Navy, and was involved in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hibbing, the American Legion, and the Italian American Club. She was also a member of the Retired Naval Nurse Corps. Association, the Retired Officers Association, and was a senior volunteer at the Mine View gift shop. Italina was involved with the Hibbing High School Class Reunion Lunch Club.

She is survived by nieces, Mary Ellen Manning, Robbinsdale, Minn., Susan Hughes, California, Nancy DiGiamBattista, California, and Mary Ruth (Dean) Porter, Nevada; nephews, Vince (Linda) Manning, Minneapolis, Nicholas (Claudia) Manning, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Nick (Leanne) DiGiamBattista, Mark (Karen) DiGiamBattista, David (Michelle) DiGiamBattista, Michael (Susan) DiGiamBattista, and Peter (Beverly) DiGiamBattista, all of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Maria (Palazzari) DiGiamBattista; brother, Vincent DiGiamBattista; and two sisters, Ellen DiGiamBattista and Angela D. Manning.
