Clyle R. Schultz
Clyle R. Schultz, who was a civic activist having served as the Proctor American Legion Auxiliary President and as a Commissioner for the City's Zoning Board for ten years, died Tues., Nov. 26, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. She was 79.

The Third Street resident was born in Duluth in 1923. She was a 1941 Proctor High School graduate and studied radio and print journalism at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. In 1945, the married Lloyd W. 'Bud' Schultz in Duluth. Clyle was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild, was a former Senior Warden, and has been part of the Total Ministry Team. She was also active in the Sky Harbor Bowling League and was an avid Minnesota Twins baseball fan.

Survivors include her husband Bud, daughters Carol (Ron) Schultz of Proctor and Janet (Dick) DeGolier of Superior, sister Joyce Bailey of Proctor, granddaughters Kristina (Tom) Tanner of Winterville, Ga., Kara (Tim) Rohweder of Proctor and Katie Schultz of Proctor, great-grandchildren Abby and Brayden Rohweder and Camryn Tanner, nieces Sharon Carroll (Dan Amel), Karon (Tom) Helquist, June (Paul) Sullivan, and Kandi (Rich) Zinter, special 'Gruggs', Debbie Peterson and Darla Kneppe, and her 'proxy grandchildren' Jessie, Graham and Terry Schultz.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

LuVerne Johnson
LuVerne Johnson, who taught elementary school in the Proctor, School Diastrict, died Sun., Nov. 24, 2002. She was 92.

A Duluth resident, she was born in Luverne, Minn., in 1909, and moved to Duluth as a young child. She lived in or near Duluth for most of her life. Luverne was a 1928 graduate of Duluth Central High School, and Duluth State Teachers College (now UMD). Her teaching career began in a one-room school house in Montana, where she rode a horse to school. She returned to Duluth and married Bernhard Johnson in 1934. She stayed active in education as a parent of five, and substitute teacher. She returned to full-time teaching in 1956 and taught until her retirement. She was active in the Retired Teacher's Association and devoted much time and energy to First Lutheran Church (Leah's Circle).

She is survived by three sons, a daughter, 15 grandchildren, two honorary grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.

Melody L. Thompson
Services were held Monday for Melody L. Thompson. She passed away peacefully in her sleep Thurs., Dec. 5, 2002, in a Duluth hospital following a lengthy illness caused by multiple system atrophy. She was 55.

She was born in 1946 in Warroad, Minn. and grew up in northern Minnesota. She had been a Proctor resident for the past 16 years. Melody was a 1964 graduate of Stillwater High School and a graduate of Golden Valley Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked with mentally challenged youth in Valdez, Alaska, and Napa, Idaho, and was a former employee at Goodwill Industries and Spirit Valley K-Mart. She volunteered at Bay View Elementary and Jedlicka Junior High, and had received an award for her volunteerism.

She married Kenneth G. Thompson in 1971. She was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church and its Leah Circle. Through her illness she remained very active at Forbes. She was an avid flower gardener, who enjoyed wildflowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clinton Fish.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Ken; sons Dennis of St. Paul, and Erin of Proctor; siblings Connie Eaton of New Hampshire, Lorna (John) Johnson of Warroad, Stanley (Fran) Fish of Fla. and Cheryl (Steven) Young of Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment in America Cemetery, Warroad. Memorials preferred. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Timothy 'Tim' Niels Thygeson
Services were held yesterday for Timothy 'Tim' Niels Thygeson. He died unexpectedly Sat., Dec. 7, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 46.

Tim was born in Duluth to Lloyd and Evelyn (Syverson) Thygeson in 1956. He graduated from Proctor High School in 1974, and was a former employee of Barko Hydraulics in Superior. Tim played and coached youth hockey.

Tim is preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his daughters Dolly of Duluth and Brianna of Cloquet, brothers Todd (Susan) of Duluth and Kerry (Sherlyn) of Alborn, a sister Carol (Ellsworth) Lind of Proctor, many nieces and nephews, and his good friend Bill Scanlon of Duluth.

Inurnment was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Jerome Chapinski
Dorothy Gagne of Proctor is mourning the loss of her brother Jerome Chapinski of Duluth who died Tues., Dec. 3, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 67.

He was born in 1935 to Stanley and Genevieve (Dillon) Chapinski. He married Arlone Lindblom in 1959 in Duluth. He sold commercial tires in northern Minnesota. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Vintage Times Car Club, MSRA and Good Guys.

He is also survived by his wife of 43 years, Arlone; sons Jon of Duluth, Mike (Blanca) of Alabama and Jamie (Kody) of Duluth; two grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brothers Dan (Shar) and Marty (Marie) of Hermantown; sisters, Sally (Bill) LaFrance of Duluth and Mary Chris (Clem) Goneau of Brooklyn Center.

Verna S. Holappa
Lori Westlund of Saginaw is mourning the death of her mother, Verna S. Holappa who passed away on Mon., Dec. 2, 2002 in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was 82.

She was born in 1920 to Matt and Maria (Johanson) Anderson in Duluth. She was a lifelong Duluth resident attending school in French River and graduating from Cloquet Valley High School. She married Edward Holappa in 1944. She was a Normanna 4-H Club leader for 20 years, a member of the Normanna Garden Club and a member and officer of the Arrowhead Poetry Society and Minnesota League of Poets.

She is also survived by sons Albert (Nina) of Carlton, William (Linda), Keith (Sheryl), Edwin (Mary), Norman (Becky) all of Duluth; daughters Kathryn Browning of Duluth, Jeanne (Ronald) Wiita of Redmond, Wash, Carol (Butch) Kettelhut of Duluth, and Louise (Jerry) Ledin of Woodinville, Wash., a sister, 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

James Walter Patterson
James Walter Patterson, a Proctor Police Officer for 20 years and Proctor's Honored Rail during the Hoghead Festival's 25th anniversary, died Sat., Dec. 14, 2002 in his Third St. home. He was 79.

He was born in Aberdeen S.D.. He attended school in Hibbing. James was a United States Army veteran serving as an aviation engineer during WW II. He married Leonore 'Lee' Stauty in 1948. Jim was employed as an electrical engineer with DM&IR retiring in 1977, after 30 years of service. He also served as a police officer with the Proctor Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1972. Jim was a member of the retired electricians of DM&IR, had served on the So. St. Louis County Fair Board, worked maintenance for the Proctor Hockey Arena, was a member of the Proctor Moose #1302, and a former member of the American Legion. He was named Proctor's Honored Rail in 2000.

Survivors include his wife Lee, a daughter Sandra (Gary) Kershaw of Proctor, grandson Jonathan Larson, granddaughter Tracy (Joe) Tuma, step grandsons Jeff (Lori Tozier) Kershaw, Allan (Hye) Kershaw and Bryan Kershaw, stepgranddaughters Kari (Tim Goddard) Kershaw, Nikki (Steve Carlson) Dougherty and Amanda (Luke) McKay, two great-grandchildren, 13 step great-grandchildren, and his dog Spotty.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Frank G. Jugasek
Frank G. Jugasek, who was born in Proctor and remained a lifelong resident, succumbed to cancer after an 18-month battle. He was 72.

The South Ugstad Road resident was born to John and Eleanora (Rogowski) Jugasek in 1930. He attended Proctor schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1946-48. Upon discharge from the Army he joined the Minnesota Air National Guard. He had been employed by the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 31 years, retiring as a carman in 1981. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor Moose Lodge #1302, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees and AARP. He was a retired member of the Proctor Volunteer Fire Department serving for over 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Leo, Stanley, William and Joseph.

He is survived by his sisters Helen (Frank) Nosek of New York and Eleanor (Louis) Brassard of Proctor and many nieces and nephews. His family wishes to express its thanks to St. Luke's Hospice, for the wonderful care he received.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Memorials to St. Rose School would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Daniel J. 'Dan' Ellefson
Daniel J. 'Dan' Ellefson who was a 1966 Proctor High School graduate, died Thurs., Dec. 12, 2002 in a Duluth Hospital. He was 54.

He was born in 1948 to Boyd and June (Graham) Ellefson. He attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. He married Susan Masterson in 1966 in Duluth. He was employed in the insurance industry and worked at the former Duluth Decorators. He was a member of the Duluth Harbormasters Chorus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Boyd.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Susan of Hermantown, daughter, Melissa Ellefson of Duluth; son, David (Jennifer) of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Hailey, Julia and Benjamin; and niece Michele (Mark) Sundstrom of Proctor.

Mike Price
Services were held for former educator and PUC Commissioner Mike Price. He died Sat., Dec. 21, 2002 as a result injuries he received in a car accident the day before. He was 78.

Mike was born in Carson Lake, Minn. He was a 1942 graduate of Hibbing High School and earned a master's degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He married Virginia Marden in 1949. He began his teaching career in Port Wing, Wis., and taught at Proctor High School from 1959 to 1986. Mike served in the U.S. Air Force in WW II. He was a member of Mala Gospojina Serbian Orthodox Church, past commander of American Legion Post 106, and past member of the Proctor Public Utilities Commission. He enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing and deer hunting.

Mike was preceded in death by his daughter Michele Anderson, his parents, and sisters Millie Lavos, Rose Price and Angie Rajacich.

He is survived by his wife Virginia and son-in-law Mark Anderson, both of Proctor, daughter Peggy (Dave) Johnson, Duluth, grandchildren Jared Anderson of Proctor, Beth (Tony) Hanni of Cromwell, Riley and Emily Johnson of Duluth, brother Daniel (Rose) Price of Portland, Ore., sister Mary (Bud) Meadows of Hibbing, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Eileen D. Thesenvitz
A private memorial service will be held in the spring for the family of Eileen D. Thesenvitz, formerly of Proctor. She died Sun., Dec. 8, 2002, peacefully in her home in Spokane, Wash. She was 76.

Survivors include her children Irene D. Scott of Kerrick, Paul V. (Mary) Thesenvitz of Embarrass, Ruth E. Foucault of Duluth, Nancy (Jonathon) Kusler of Mt. Vernon, Wash. and Dale (Hilda) Thesenvitz of Melbourne, Fla., a brother, a sister, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Frieda Elizabeth Ahlgren
Frieda Elizabeth Ahlgren, who owned and operated the Sunset Cottages and was an area resident for over 50 years, died, Sat., Dec. 21, 2002 in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 90.

Frieda was born in Two Harbors to William and Anna (Carlson) Larson in 1912. She was raised in Culver and graduated from Alborn High School. She married Stanley A. Ahlgren in 1932. They lived in Munger until 1948 when they moved to Adolph. They moved to Little Grand Lake in 1961. Frieda was a cook in the Munger School during the 1940's and belonged to various women's clubs in Munger for many years. She was a long time member of Hope Lutheran Church in Munger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Stanley A. in 1992; two brothers Andrew and Carl Larson.

Surviving are sons Raymond (Joann) of Proctor, Floyd (Carole) of Floodwood and Maynard of Eugene, Ore.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 12 noon until the 1:00 p.m. service today (Thurs.) in Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W. Burial will be at the Solway Cemetery.
