Janet L. Haiman, 59, SERVICES: Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and will continue from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Thursday at the United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Daniel Johns will officiate. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Janet L. Haiman, 59, of Eveleth, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Janet was born on June 25, 1945, to Carl and Ella (Sauve) Nelson in Virginia. She grew up and attended school in Eveleth, graduating with the class of 1963. Janet furthered her educated by attending the Hibbing School of Cosmetology. She was united in marriage to Howard Haiman on June 26, 1965 in Eveleth. Janet was employed with Erickson Lumber of Hibbing for 10 years. Most recently she was employed with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia. Janet’s hobby was home remodeling projects.

Survivor’s include her mother, Ella Nelson of Virginia; daughter, Amy Zufall of Eveleth; son, David (Laura) Haiman of Hibbing; seven grandchildren, Adrianne, Amanda, Felicia, Brittany, David, Rebecca and Wendy; two brothers, Jim Nelson of Virginia and William Nelson of Rice Lake, Wis.; sister, Roberta Hoff of Virginia; two uncles, William Sauve of Virginia and Galen McKenzie of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.

Janet was preceded in death by her father, Carl W. Nelson; paternal grandparents, Karl and Ellen Nelson; and maternal grandmother, Jennie (Sauve) McKenzie.

James Roydon Miller
James Roydon Miller, 22, SERVICES: Funeral services have already taken place.

James Roydon Miller, 22, died on Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in a construction accident at Great Falls, Mont.

He was born June 30, 1982, in Elko, Nev., where he was raised and educated. Jamie worked as a driller’s helper and was a construction worker. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed four-wheeling and hiking, and he loved spending time with his family.

Jamie is survived by his partner, Heather Hunt Miller of Great Falls; a daughter, Jasmine Elizabeth Miller of Great Falls; his father, Jake Miller of Great Falls; his mother and stepfather, Loralee Miller Schroeder and Ron Schroeder of Spring Creek, Nev.; sisters, Jasalee R. Miller, Jerica R. Miller and JaNae R. Schroeder, all of Spring Creek, and Janel R. Miller of Great Falls; a step-sister, Sarah Jo Schroeder of Aurora; brothers, Jaylun R. Miller and Jorey R. Schroeder of Spring Creek, Jaron R. Miller of Great Falls; a step-brother, Eric Schroeder of Aurora; grandparents, Rena White (Jay Brown) of Elko, Nev., Beverly Mack of Great Falls, and Delmer and Darlene Schroeder of Embarrass; and a great-grandmother, Gladys Taylor of Ekalaka.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Earl White.

Blake Daniel Maturi
Blake Daniel Maturi, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Coleraine. Visitation 5–7 p.m., Monday in the Peterson Funeral Chapel of Coleraine and will continue one hour prior to service Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine.

Blake Daniel Maturi, six-week-old son of Daniel Maturi and April Hamling, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, in his home in Calumet.

Blake was born on Nov. 4, 2004, in Grand Rapids.

Survivors include his parents, April Hamling and Daniel Maturi; a sister, Hannah Maturi; a brother, Tyler Nelson; grandparents, Debbie Knopik of Calumet and Linda Hamling of Virginia; great-grandparents, Herman and Valerie Maturi of Las Vegas, Nev.; an uncle, Craig Maturi, of Sartell, Minn.; and several great-aunts, -uncles and cousins.

Gary Howard Staples
Gary Howard Staples, 58, SERVICES: Memorial service 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Faith United Lutheran Church in Iron, with Pastor Matt Griggs officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Services provided by Anderson-Daniels, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, in Hibbing.

Gary Howard Staples, 58, of Cherry died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in his home following a long and courageous battle with brain cancer.

He was born May 26, 1946, in Duluth to Howard and Lorraine (Willow) Staples. He spent his early years growing up in Two Harbors before moving to Duluth, where he graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1964. An Army veteran, he was stationed in Germany. While serving in the Army, he married Carol Johnson in 1969. Gary worked as a millwright for U.S. Steel for 30 years, retiring from Minntac in 1994.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol; his son, Scott (Stacia), and the light of their life, their daughter, Lauren, all of Iron; his father, Howard Staples, of Two Harbors; his mother, Lorraine Corniea, of Wayzata; two brothers, Rodger (Bonnie) Staples, of Two Harbors and Arnie Bredow of Florida; three sisters, Sue (Jerry) Moon of Michigan, Kathy Long of Marshall and Pauline Greczyke of Duluth; in-laws, Emmert (Dorothy) Johnson of Two Harbors; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Karen) Johnson of Washington and David (Sharon) Johnson of Duluth; nieces, Tammy (Rick) Weber, Katie (Jasen) Hoglund and Kori Johnson; a nephew, Jeremiah Staples; and many special aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Lillian Willow; and paternal grandparents, Ralph and Sarah Staples.

Lorraine V. Moberg
Lorraine V. Moberg, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Cotton Community Church. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers Funeral home of Duluth.

Lorraine V. Moberg, 72, of Cotton died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was born March 28, 1932, in Cotton to Martin and Amelia (Patzer) Peterson. She was very active in the Cotton Covenant Church and hosted an in-house Bible study for many years. Lorraine was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by all.

She is survived by her children, Rodney (Marie), Henry (Shirley), Claudia (Joe) O’Keefe and Amelia Moberg (special friend, Daryl Krone); 10 grandchildren; sister, Audrey Mathet; and her brother, Palmer (Virginia) Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; parents; sister, Dorothy Olson; and brother, Marvin Peterson.

Marjorie L. Hoechst
Marjorie L. Hoechst, 81, SERVICES: Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa. The Rev. James Shaw will officiate. Local arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home of Aurora.

Marjorie L. Hoechst, 81, of Aurora, went to her eternal rest on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

She was born Aug. 24, 1923, to William and Henrietta Hoechst in Rock Island, Iowa. She was a resident of the White Community Skilled Nursing Facility and a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aurora.

She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy (Kenneth) Bargmann of Aurora, Betty Jean (Duane) Minick of Panora, Iowa, and Mary (Jimmie) Connell of Davenport, Iowa.

Veta L. Loken
Veta L. Loken, 83, SERVICES: Visitation will be one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Funeral service Thursday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Robert Simensen will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Veta L. Loken, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Veta was born on Jan. 21, 1921, to Frank and Mamie (Herrin) Moore in Hancock, Minn. where she grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to Alvin Loken on April 22, 1939, in Hancock. Veta and Alvin lived and worked on a farm in Alberta, Minn. before moving to Pueblo, Colo. where they were owner/operators of a service station. They moved to Virginia in 1953 where she worked at Herbergers for 34 years. Veta was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Virginia. Veta enjoyed cooking, baking, and taking care of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling and bird watching.

Survivors include her daughter, Roxann Matschiner and Dennis Petersen of Virginia; granddaughter, Dawn Matschiner; grandson, William (Nicole) Matschiner; two great-grandchildren, Brylie and Austin; sister, Betty Heil of Smeaton, Canada; two dogs, Baby and Zella; and cat, Torra.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin; son, Dean; daughter-in-law, Nancy; sister, Lura; brother, Frank; sister-in-law, Geraldine; brother-in-law, Don; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and a dog, Chassie.

Sister Monica Jo Coz
Sister Monica Jo Coz, 86, SERVICES: A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. today in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, Kan., where friends may call after 4 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 South 4th Street, Leavenworth, Kansas, 66048.

Sister Monica Coz, 86, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, died in Ross Hall at the Mother House in Leavenworth on Monday, Dec. 20, 2004.

Mary Jo Coz was born on April 6, 1918, in Eveleth, one of six children of Frank and Antonia Bencina Coz. She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Aug. 18, 1949, and, as Sister Monica, made her profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1951. Sister Monica was a registered X-Ray technician and received her licensure from St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth. She was also an excellent accountant and received a BBA from Washburn University, Topeka, Kan. Sister Monica served in the business office, worked at the switchboard, and tutored students at the University of Saint Mary from 1973-1994. Sister retired to Ross Hall in 2001.

Survivors include a sister, Agnes and her husband, John B. Vaida, of Tucson, Ariz.; nieces, nephews; and her SCL community.

Patricia M. Pauhu
Patricia M. Pauhu, 78, SERVICES: Private family graveside services were held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. Arrangements were with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Patricia M. Pauhu, 78, of Hibbing, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 27, 1926, to Milo and Nellie (Murphy) Kavanaugh in Hibbing. She grew up and attended school in Hibbing. Patricia was united in marriage to Oiva “Ben” Pauhu on Sept. 12, 1945, in Hibbing. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Swan Lake and Nashwauk. She returned to Hibbing in 1991. She was a Ham Radio Operator, loved the computer, gardening, and fishing.

Surviving are her daughter, Patti (Rob) Campbell of Eveleth; son, Mike (Shelly) Pauhu of Blaine, Minn.; four grandchildren, Carrie, Brian, Sherry, and Carley; great-grandson, Cody; sister, Delores “Jiggs” (Conrad) Kemen of Murphy Lake; several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, special neighbors, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband.

Patricia A. ‘Patsy’ Bresnik
Patricia A. ‘Patsy’ Bresnik, 74, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild celebrating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass Monday at the church. Casketbearers will be Chris Maras, Rick Kolosky, Mark Crumbley Jr., Damion Lively, Jeff Shay, and Don Johnson. Burial will follow in the Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Patricia A. “Patsy” Bresnik, 74, of Chisholm, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Virginia (Finntown), to Joseph and Grace (Collins) Gauthier. She attended Virginia schools. She had been a Chisholm resident for more than 50 years. Patsy was united in marriage on June 14, 1947, to Joseph J. Bresnik in Chisholm. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm. Pat touched the lives of many people with her unbridled generosity and love of life.

Survivors include her children, Nancy (John) Maras of Hibbing, Linda (Mike) Devlin of Ft. Collins, Colo., Barry (Kathy) Bresnik of Chisholm, Patti (Mark) Crumbley of Peoria, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Sherek of Virginia; numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph J. on Jan. 14, 1997; son, Carey Bresnik on Feb. 8, 1978; brothers, Hank, William and James Gauthier; sisters, Ethel Anderson, Ruth Norha, and Loretta Paun.

Donald W. ‘Jake’ Carlson
Donald W. ‘Jake’ Carlson, 80, SERVICES: Memorial service at 1 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tower with the Rev. Aaron Lofgren officiating. Visitation for one hour before the service at the church. Spring burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. Military rites will be accorded by Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245 of Tower. Arrangements by Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Donald W. “Jake’’ Carlson, 80, of Tower, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born March 19, 1924, in Tower, the son of Waldemar and Anna (Hendrickson) Carlson. He grew up in Tower and graduated from Tower-Soudan High School in 1942. Jake entered the military in 1943. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, where he received four battle stars and a Purple Heart. He was discharged on Christmas Eve in 1945.

Jake was united in marriage to Martha E. Suihkonen on April 20, 1946, in Embarrass. They lived in Tower for the first year of their marriage, then moved to Kugler Township for 17 years, after which they returned to Tower.

He worked for Foley Construction Company while they were building Erie Mining Company. He worked in the Soudan Underground Mine as a contract miner for the Oliver Iron Mining Company and later transferred to the Pioneer Underground Mine in Ely. Following the closing of the Pioneer Mine, he worked as a supervisor for the St. Louis County Fourth District, Tower garage, retiring in 1986.

Music was his passion. Recently he assisted with the Tower High School band, becoming the oldest member. Deer hunting was a family tradition that Jake enjoyed. He liked to make deer meat potato sausage with his brother Warren. In the spring he liked to go to his brother Roy’s shack with Ludvik Mesojedec, where they had great fun cooking maple syrup. He enjoyed his lake cabin and spent many wonderful summers there with is family. He was the greatest husband, father and grandfather. Jake truly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Tower and a former member of United Steelworkers of America Local 2306 of Soudan, VFW Post 1209 of Lake Vermilion, the Soudan Band and was one of the organizers and member of the German Band.

He is survived by his loving wife, Martha of Tower; his children, Muriel (Lynn) Scott of Tower, Judy Carlson of Virginia, Donny (Penny) Carlson of Wausau, Wis., Paul (Karyn) Carlson of Virginia, Lois Jackson of Duluth and Nancy Carlson of Duluth; grandchildren, Terry (Erin) Peitso, Scott Peitso, Steve (Theresa) Carlson, Kelly (David) Bystrom, Jason, Travis, Sam, Kristen, Kerby, Adrianna, Andy and Ben Carlson, Lindsay and Andrea Jackson; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Hannah Peitso and Ellena Carlson; brothers, Roy (Pat) Carlson of Ely and Warren Carlson of Tower; sisters, Clarice “Sissy’’ Starkovich of Ely and Joan (Jerry) Salo of Tower; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Doris Limmer, Shirley Starkovich and Vivian Mensorio.

Lane Douglas Johnson
Lane Douglas Johnson, 72, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Donald Stauty officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. today at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour before service Monday at the church. Cremation will follow the service, with burial at a later date in the Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.

Lane Douglas Johnson, 72, of Gilbert died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in the arms of his Savior at St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth.

He was born May 4, 1932, in Elmwood, Wis., to Henry and Beatrice Johnson. Later they moved to Superior, Wis., where Lane attended Superior Schools, graduating from Superior East High School in 1950. In 1951, he married Jeanne Beetcher and moved to Babbitt in 1956, where he was employed at Reserve Mining Co. for 31 years as an air brake repairman.

He was active in the Babbitt Lions Club for many years and was a member of Good Shepherd Church in Babbitt, serving his Lord as an elder and on church boards for many years. He moved to Duluth where he and his wife managed and maintained high rise apartment buildings, and following retirement in 1997 moved back to Gilbert.

He was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Virginia and was an active member of the Babbitt-Embarrass Area Development Association, serving as a past president.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jeanne; daughters, Carolyn (John) Busha of Embarrass, Lori (Edgar) Gonzalez of Creston, Ohio, and Jacalyn Johnson of Gilbert; a son, Michael Johnson, of Virginia; 10 grandchildren, John (Billie) Busha of Keewatin, Rachele (Steve) Grover of Bigfork, Leslie Gonzalez of Creston, Ohio, Sara (Blake) Cox of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Tony, Katie and Hannah Gonzalez of Creton, Ohio, Michael Johnson II of South Grove, Minn., Mallory (Ben) Johnson of North Carolina and Mark Andres Jr. of Gilbert; 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Katelyn and Allison Busha of Keewatin, Trista, Tyler, Melissa, Haley, Andrew and Kristen Grover of Bigfork and Michael Johnson III of Ely; a sister, Bonnie Ferrell, of Sacramento, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Lois Johnson, of Twenty-nine Palms, Calif.

He was preceded in death by a son in infancy, James Henry Johnson (1964); his parents; and a brother, Eugene Johnson.
