Margaret C. Janisch, 72, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth, with the Rev. Aleksander Suchan as celebrant. Visitation one hour before service at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Margaret C. Janisch, 72, of Eveleth died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.

She was born April 21, 1932, in Eveleth to Peter and Teresa (Kapsh) Krall. She was a graduate of Eveleth High School. She married Robert P. Janisch on Aug. 6, 1954, in Eveleth. She worked at Eveleth Floral and Greenhouse and was a homemaker.

Margaret enjoyed crocheting and knitting and was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, KSKJ Lodge and the National Catholic Society of Foresters and enjoyed life at the lake and her family.

She is survived by her children, Mark D. Janisch of Carver, Minn., and Lisa M. Dahl of Chisholm; grandchildren, Stephanie M. Solie, Jessica M. Dahl, Robert Paul Janisch and Levi James Janisch; a brother, George (Jean) Krall, of Chicago; sisters, Theresa Krall of Virginia and Marie (Jacob) Specht of Eveleth; a sister-in-law, Rose Krall, of Eveleth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a son, Paul; brothers, Peter, William and Edward Krall; and her parents.

Ernest George Komatar
Ernest George Komatar, 87, SERVICES: Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. Joel Hastings as celebrant. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Ernest George Komatar, 87, of Gilbert died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.

He was born March 14, 1917, in Genoa Location (Gilbert) to John and Mary Komatar. He was a graduate of Gilbert High School, attended Virginia Junior College and later earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Minnesota. He taught in Columbia Heights and Richfield High Schools, retiring from Richfield in the early 1980s. Following retirement, he returned to the family home in Gilbert. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert and the Minnesota and National Education Associations.

Survivors include his sister, Bernice Bateman, of International Falls; and nephews, James F. Colosimo, Robert J. Bateman and John M. Colosimo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Martin Stephon; brother, John Komatar; sisters, Mary Colosimo and Theresa Barrett; a nephew, David Bateman; and a stepbrother, Edward Stephon.

Virginia Keating

Virginia “Mitzie” Keating, 75, formerly of Virginia, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

She was born Oct. 3, 1929 in Hopper, Minn., to Steve and Jennie (Johnson) Keating, and was a 1948 graduate of Roosevelt HS in Virginia.

She is survived by her brothers, Edward (Horoko) Keating, Jamal, CA, and Russell (Mae) Keating, Eveleth; nephews, John Keating, Virginia, Frank Keating, San Diego, Russell (Vicky) Keating, Eveleth, David Keating, Eveleth, George (Debbie) Moylan, Virginia, and Pat (Tracey) Moylan, Eveleth; one niece, Sherri (Dan) Kangas, Eveleth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Rose Moylan.

Helen M. Haugen
Helen M. Haugen, 79, SERVICES: Memorial service 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with Pastor Matthew Griggs officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service.

Helen M. Haugen, 79, of Eveleth died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at the Eveleth Health Services Park.

She was born June 25, 1925, to Henry and Senja (Riistiaho) Saukko in Eveleth, where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Eveleth High School in 1943. During World War II she worked in a naval ammunition depot in Nebraska. On Jan. 17, 1953, she married Melvin Haugen in Virginia. She lived in Eveleth, where she worked for Hendrickson’s Bakery. She moved to Lexington, Mo., in 1963, where she worked for a shoe factory. After returning to the Range, she worked for the Gifthouse Green Stamp store in Virginia, the Lenont-Peterson Clinic and the Salmi and Tourraine Hotel as a janitor. She loved to visit people.

Survivors include a sister, Mildred (Harvey) Haugen, of Eveleth; a brother, Axil (Bertha) Saukko, of Eveleth; and numerous nieces and nephews, including close nieces Sandra and Laura and nephew Randy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, on Sept. 22, 2002; her parents; brothers, Oiva, Roger and Oliver Saukko; and sisters, Lillian Forsman and Vieno Saukko.

Ruth Voxland
Ruth Voxland, 82, SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Nathan Sager will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home chapel, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Ruth Voxland, 82, of Virginia, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at St. Michael's Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born May 9, 1922, to Fred and Esther (Eigenbrodt) Mahlmann. She was a 1940 graduate of the Kenyon High School, where she was an honor student. Ruth worked for the Minnesota School for the Deaf in Faibault and in June of 1941, she married Leonard Lillesve. He was killed in a logging accident in 1946. Ruth and their children, Barbara and Gary, moved home, where Ruth worked at a local bank.

She married Rudy Voxland on Jan. 7, 1951. They lived in Kenyon, Maiden Rock, Wis., and Zumbrota before moving to Virginia in 1958. Ruth loved to sew, knit, grow flowers, and especially to go fishing or boating. She was a wonderful homemaker and loved to take care of children and grandchildren. She was a Brownie Scout leader. She loved her church, attended regularly, was a leader for the Ruth Circle for many years, and was active in mission sewing and Bible Study. She was the secretary for AAL for several years.

Ruth is survived by her husband of more than 53 years, Rudolph; daughters, Barbara (Richard) Forsberg of Famington, and Nancy (Charles) Eichholz of Tower; granddaughter, Dee (Daniel) Voss; and grandsons, Gary (Rhonda) Forsberg and Jeffery Rosati; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Michael Forsberg, and Danielle Voss; and her sister, Jane Mahlmann.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Lillesve, in 1946; her son, Gary Lillesve, in 1964; two infant brothers; and her parents.

Evelyne C.DePaulis
Evelyne C.DePaulis, 87, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Aurora. The Rev. Elton Brown will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

Evelyne C. DePaulis, 87, of Aurora, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.

She was born March 8, 1917, in Mesaba, Minn., to Edward and Emma (Froen) Braaten. She was raised there and in Aurora, where she attended school. She was married by the Rev. Arthur Cartwright to Henry DePaulis on Nov. 11, 1935, in Aurora. The couple resided in Aurora, where Evelyne raised her children. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and special friend and companion, Frank. She was a member of Aurora United Methodist Church, Aurora American Legion Post Auxiliary, and Aurora Senior Citizens, and was a past member of Bluebell Rebekah Lodge and the Aurora Moose Lodge.

She is survived by daughters, Susan (Donald) Markstrom and Terrill (Glenn) Paavola of Aurora, and Rebecca Courier of Virginia; a son, Dennis of Aurora; daughter-in-law, Donna DePaulis, also of Aurora; her sisters, Dorothy Pierce of Seattle, Wash., and Jeanette (Jess) Colbert of Portland, Ore.; very special friend, Frank Nemanic of Aurora; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; son, David; brothers, Clifford and Harold Braaten; and sisters, Edith Holter, Ruth Lakso, Ethel Luoma, and Lenora Holter.

Frank M. Glavan
Frank M. Glavan, 90, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. The Rev. Jon Wild will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 8510. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Frank M. Glavan, 90, of Hibbing and formerly of Kinney, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at the Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.

He was born Nov. 27, 1914, in Commadore Location, Virginia, Minn., to Frank and Mary (Verant) Glavan. He graduated from Martin Hughes High School class of 1933. He worked for the CCC 707 from 34 to 36. Frank attended Virginia Junior College from 1936 to 1938. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.

Frank was united in marriage to Margaret McCullar on Oct. 4, 1943, in Hibbing. The couple made their home in Kinney. He worked as a chemical analyst for U.S. Steel until retiring in 1977. They moved to Virginia in 1993, and to Hibbing in 2001.

Frank was a man of many interests and talents. Anyone who knew him learned from him. There is not enough room to list all of his accomplishments or to list all of the people who knew and loved him. He was a member of VFW Post 8510 of Hibbing.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Evelyn (Jerald) Sundgaard of Boise, Idaho, and Jacqueline Frushour of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sons, Louis Glavan of Hibbing, Frank (Barbara) Glavan of Hibbing, and Sherman (Tammy) Glavan of Glencoe; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Julia (Clayton) Waller of San Francisco, Calif.; and two brothers, Ludwig Glavan of Gilbert, and William (Bonnie) Glavan of Romeo, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers.

Paul ‘Bobo’ E. DeWeese
Paul ‘Bobo’ E. DeWeese, 59, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Ely Baptist Church. The Rev. Kevin Hanson and the Rev. Jeremy Hudson will co-officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Kerntz Funeral Home Chapel and will continue from 9 a.m. until the services Friday at the church. Burial will be in the family plot in Ohio. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Ely Baptist Church Memorial Fund or the American Heart Association. Paul "Bobo" E. DeWeese, 59, of Ely, died suddenly on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in the Ely Bloomenson Hospital's emergency room.

He was born May 30, 1945, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Clifford and Geneva (Powell) DeWeese, graduated from Mechanicsburg High School the class of 1963, attended Ely Junior College and received his degree in mortuary science from the University of Cincinnati. He married Lora Drake on Aug. 25, 1990, in Wilmington, Ohio, and had served in the U.S. Air Force military police. Paul worked in funeral service at the Fisher Funeral Home in Wilmington, Ohio, for 30 years; he was an Ohio State Funeral Home Inspector, and also had worked as the Superintendent of the Sanitary Landfill in Wilmington for eight years. Paul retired in 1998 and moved to Ely. He was employed as a janitor, a school bus driver, drove for Shubat Transportation, had a candy route for Dan Erzar, and since 2002 was the co-manager of Kerntz Brothers, A Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely.

Paul was a man who loved his Lord, his church, and his fellow man. He was an active member of the Ely Baptist Church and served on the church board. He was a man of many interests, which included singing, acting, snowmobiling, boating, hunting, riding his Gold Wing, playing golf, and enjoying the outdoors. He was community minded, serving on the Ely Cemetery Board, playing Santa, was an active member of the Ely Rotary Club, and served on the board of the Northern Lights Arts Association, and was the offensive line coach for the Vermilion Community College Football Team. Paul was a man with a big heart, a giving nature, and a gentle, nurturing spirit who touched the hearts of all he met.

He is survived by his wife, Lora; children, Dwayne (Kim) DeWeese of Wilmington, Ohio, Amy Nott of Catawba, Ohio, David (Tricia) Sollars of Topeka, Kan., Michael (Rita Fleming) Sollars of New Orleans, La.; grandchildren, Wyatt, Garrett, Anna Ruth, Lindsay and Juliana; sisters, Ruth (John) Smith-Gombar of Marysville, Ohio, and Barbara (Mike) Graham of Springfield, Ohio; brother, Stephen (Christy) DeWeese of Sidney, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews and multitude of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a sister, Wilma; and a brother, Joe.

Margaret A. King
Margaret A. King, 72, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The Rev. Bob Hodge will officiate. Spring interment will be in the Leiding Cemetery of Orr.

Margaret “Marge” A. King, 72, of Orr, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at her residence.

She was born at Brittmount, on Jan. 23, 1932, the daughter of Ben and Aina (Tapanila) Heikkila. She grew up in Brittmount and attended high school in Alango. She married Herbert H. King on May 8, 1948, at Orr.

The couple settled in Orr, where Marge has since resided. She attended the Orr Bible Chapel for many years. She was the bookkeeper for the family businesses, HHM Inc. and Orr Manufacturing. Marge enjoyed knitting, crossword and jigsaw puzzle solving, gardening, and hardly ever missed her “story”.

She is survived by three sons, Herbert Jr. and Michael (Anita), both of Orr, and Rodney (Rebekah) of Bear River; two daughters, Francie King-Janeksela of Wichita, Kan., and Lori King of Orr; one sister, Dorothy (Robert) Phillips of Florenton; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Herbert Sr. on Nov. 6, 1997; one brother Ed Heikkila; and one granddaughter, Shanene Janeksela.

Laili Senia Latola
Laili Senia Latola, 81, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held in Palo in the spring. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Laili Senia Latola, 81, of Aurora, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at White Community Hospital in Aurora.

Laili was born to Matt and Eliina (Kahteva) Lehtinen on May 7, 1923, in Palo. She attended schools there and on April 9, 1941, married Walter Latola, her husband of 63 years, in Virginia. During World War II she resided in Providence, R.I. and California, where she was employed as a shipfitters helper. In 1943, she returned to Gilbert for a time and then settled in Palo where she resided until moving to Aurora on June 1, 2002. She was employed as an aide at the Kangas Resthome and spent 15 years as an Avon representative. Laili was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Church of Palo, and a member of the Palo Senior Citizens Club, a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries of Aurora and the Aurora Moose Club. She enjoyed bird feeding and bird watching, crocheting, knitting, flower gardening, walking and lawn care.

Laili is survived by her husband, Walter; daughters, Vivian (Jim) King of Mora and Sally (Jim) Truman of Palo; daughter-in-law, Cela Latola of Aurora; sister, Lillian (Martin) Latola of Palo; brother, Edwin (Vivian) Lehtinen of Australia; sister-in-law Elsie Lehtinen of Aurora; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Alvin; brothers, Sulo and Edward Lehtinen; and sisters, Aune Schluder, Wilma Hilsen, Lila Hietala and an infant sister.

Martha Johnson
Martha Johnson, 93, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Ely. The Rev. John Bonk will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church. Martha Johnson, 93, of Ely, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in the Ely Nursing Home. Martha was born Oct. 13, 1911, in Ely to Henry and Maria (Tuominiemi) Filson. She married Percy Johnson and was a homemaker in Lindstrom, Minn. After Percy’s death in 1975, Martha returned to Ely.

Martha is survived by a brother, Eugene (Marge) Filson of Palo Alto, Calif.; sisters, Gertrude Stukel of Ely and Elaine Sawyer of Eau Claire, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Violet Kurtti, Elma Schmidt, Julia Rova, Mae McInnis, Lillian Lekatz, Laina Jerich; and brothers, Henry and Oliver Filson.
