Forrest ‘Woody’ Bovee
Forrest ‘Woody’ Bovee, 78, SERVICES: Funeral at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes, with the Rev. Terrance Stratton officiating. Visitation for one hour before service. Burial with military honors by Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Forrest W. “Woody’’ Bovee, 78, of Hoyt Lakes died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Care Center.

He was born to Walter and Lena (McFarland) Bovee on Nov. 22, 1926, in Bane Township of Aitkin County, Minn. He graduated from Aitkin High School in 1944. He served with the Army Air Corps in Panama during World War II. Following discharge he attended the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1952. He was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey in Galveston and Dallas, Texas, and later Tofte, Minn. He then began employment with Erie Mining Co. in 1955, remaining there until 1962 when he reentered the military to serve with the missile defense forces until discharge in 1965. He then returned to Erie Mining, where he remained until retirement in 1982. He served in the U.S. Air Force a combined total of 30 years active and reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. During his retirement years in Hoyt Lakes he enjoyed woodworking, golfing, traveling, working in freelance surveying and especially spending time with his family.

He is survived by a son, David of Hoyt Lakes; daughters, Lynda (Darwin) Alar of Virginia, Wendy Bovee-Assaturian of Sugar Land, Texas, Cindy (Keith) Norris of Floodwood, Becky Bovee of Duluth; a brother, Dodd of Osceola, Wis.; a sister, Gloria Thorson of Buena Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion; sons, William and Kenneth; brothers, Walter and Kermit; sister, Maxine Wahlberg; and granddaughter, Caroline Rose Bovee.

Laila O. Lehto
Laila O. Lehto, 90, SERVICES: Spring graveside services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home in Virginia. Condolences can be sent to Sandra Osborn, 23017 Brier Road, Brier, Wash. 98036.

Laila O. Lehto, 90, formerly of Eveleth, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at the Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood, Wash.

She was born in Duluth on July 17, 1914. She was a homemaker and owrked as a welder in the shipyards on Lake Superior during World War II. Laila and her husband George lived most of their life on the family farm at Eveleth. They recently moved to Stanwood, Wash., to be near their daughter.

She is survived by her brother, John Nortgen; her daughter, Sandra (Richard) Osborn; and grandchildren, Kevin and Amanda.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George, in February of this year, her son Curtis and her sister Laura.

Georgene E. Johnson
Georgene E. Johnson, 79, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alango. Rev. Don Guttormson will be the officiant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The casket bearers will be: Adam and Travis Leinonen, Paul and Dean Edstrom, and Dennis and Barry Johnson. Spring interment will be in the Alango Township Cemetery.

Georgene Johnson, 79, of Bear River, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living Center in Virginia.

She was born in Hibbing on Nov. 19, 1925, the daughter of Arthur and Ile (Kuster) Filbert. She grew up in Hibbing and Field Township (near Cook), and graduated from the Alango High School in 1943. She then worked for several years for the Defense Department in Brigham, Utah, making airplanes during the World War 11 war effort. She returned to the Cook area, where she raised her children. She married Duane Johnson on Aug. 19, 1977, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alango. They moved to Bear River after marriage. She worked many years for the J.C. Penney Co., and also for several business in Cook, where she was well known and liked. She and Duane enjoyed traveling together, and were to every state except Alaska. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Georgene enjoyed and appreciated her flower gardens, and also admired other flower gardens in her travels. She and Duane had many good times together, and liked dancing. Georgene lived at the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living Center in Virginia the past two years.

She is survived by her husband Duane; four sons, Wilfred “Butch” Leinonen of Buhl, Duane (Martha) Leinonen of Tallahassee, Fla., Dale (Vicki) Leinonen of Angora, and Kevin (Theresa) Johnson of Dothan, Ala.; one daughter, Tammy (Farley) Fox of Britt; one sister, Arline (Greg) Antus of Angora, 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ile in 1993; her father, Arthur in 1987; two brothers, Richard Kuster in 1931, and Wesley Kuster in 1993.

Floyd M. Sunsdahl
Floyd M. Sunsdahl, 70, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Rebecca Wentworth will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Floyd M. Sunsdahl, 70, of Biwabik, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Golden Crest Health Care Center in Hibbing, with his family by his side.

He was born Sept. 16, 1934, on the family farm in Star Township, Pennington County, Minn., to Henry and Gertie (Bjornara) Sunsdahl. He grew up on the farm, east of Goodridge, and attended Goodridge High School. In 1960, Floyd moved to Hibbing. He was united in marriage to Vivian Stratton on July 26, 1969, in Grygla. They moved to Biwabik, where they have resided for the last 31 years. He worked for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway Company as a track laborer, retiring in 1993 as a foreman.

Floyd liked to meet the guys for coffee every morning at Megan’s restaurant in Aurora, where they reminisced and discussed the latest news. He enjoyed playing solitaire, doing crossword puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune and cuddling with his cats. His favorite treat was root beer barrels. Floyd was a quiet man and the greatest husband, dad and grandfather.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Railway.

Floyd is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Vivian of Biwabik; son, David (Janie) Sunsdahl of Roseau; daughter, LuAnn Sunsdahl of Embarrass; grandchildren, Alicia, Joshua and Nicole “Punky”; brothers, Alvin (Sharyl) Sunsdahl of Warroad, and Obert (Sandra) Sunsdahl of Thief River Falls; sisters, Emma Kapla of Hibbing, and Janice (Orrin) Haugen of Hibbing; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, beloved pets and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Hubert, Virgil, Roy and George.

Jack J. Lehto
Jack J. Lehto, 44, SERVICES: Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in Centennial, Wyo. Memorial services will be held locally at a later date.

Jack J. Lehto, 44, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Britt, died on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in Fort Collins.

He was born Sept. 2, 1960, in Virginia, to Jalmer and Mayme Lehto. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1978.

Survivors include his daughter, Jaclyn (Richard) Wright of Aurora; his mother, Mayme Hilmas of Britt; brother, Raymond (Karen) Lehto of Britt; sisters, Beverly Peterson of Britt and Kathleen (Dan) Dschaak of Britt; two stepbrothers, Duane (Barbara) Hilmas of Longmont, Colo., and Dennis (Edith) Hilmas of North Branch, Minn.; two stepsisters, Barbara Hilmas of Virginia and Gloria (Dennis) Jacobson of Britt; other relatives and friends; and special friend, Jean O’Connor of Fort Collins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jalmer in 1967; and a daughter, Amy.

Patricia Rose Sopp
Patricia Rose Sopp, SERVICES: At Patricia’s request, there will be a memorial visitation Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel, Eveleth.

On Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, Patricia Rose Sopp left this earth to once again be reunited with her beloved Frank.

She was born to Anna (Orazem) and Nicholas Horoshak on Oct. 10, 1931, in Eveleth. She was united in marriage to Francis Joseph Sopp on June 13, 1949, in Eveleth. Together they lovingly raised five children. During her lifetime, she was dedicated to the care of her son, Michael. Patricia belonged to the Eveleth Does, the Fayal Golden Club and the Tuesday Night Card Club with her friends. She enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, canning, crocheting, reading and most of all caring for her grandchildren. You have a way about you, your loving words, your smile that brightens lives around you and makes them more worthwhile.

Survivors include children, Patricia (Michael) Fish of Saginaw, Joseph (Janet) Sopp of Eveleth, Deborah (Bruce) Liberty of Cottage Grove, Thomas (Diana) Sopp of Harwood, N.D., and Michael Sopp at home; brothers, Eugene (Janet) Horoshak of Virginia and Edward (Sandy) Horoshak of Eveleth; grandchildren, Jennifer (fiance Darwin Fossell) and Jeffrey (Amber Struna) Jola, Nicole, Samantha, Alison and Casey Sopp, Kathryn, Nicholas and Meredith Liberty, Melanie and Nicholas Sopp; stepgrandchildren, Joshua and Samuel Fish; “special’’ daughter, Ella Mancina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank in October; her parents; and sister, Anna Mae Gentilini.

Harry Nelson
Harry Nelson, 84, SERVICES: Funeral services will 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Aurora with Rev. Donald Fisher officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and will continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Burial will be in Rauha Cemetery.

Harry Nelson, 84, of Makinen died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at White Community Hospital in Aurora.

Harry was born Dec. 25, 1920, to Milton and Mina (Krammer) Nelson at Frazee. He attended schools there and also Bemidji, where he graduated from Bemidji High School. He then married Lily Schwoboda on Aug. 16, 1943, at Frazee. He resided in Audubon and Lake Park and was employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad. In October of 1957, he moved to the Makinen area where he farmed and was employed by Erie Mining as a track foreman. He retired from Erie Mining in 1983 and continued farming until his death. He loved his farming and farmed his entire life while working his other jobs. He always maintained that he had the best cows. He also loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Carole (Larry) Lauseng of Palo, Jill (Woody) Sine of Klamath Falls, Ore., and MariAnne (Bobby) Damkroeger of Eveleth; two sons, Steven (Cathy) of Zimmerman, Minn., and Robert of St. Thomas, Minn.; a son-in-law, Jerry Widseth of Eveleth; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lily; daughter, Debby Widseth; brother, Miles; and sisters, Roxsey Gilstead and Angie Schultz.

Ethel M. Haverkamp
Ethel M. Haverkamp, 83, SERVICES: Visitation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel in Virginia, with the rosary read at 7 p.m. by the Buhl Knights of Columbus 5612. The visitation will continue on Monday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. The Rev. Clem Gustafson will celebrate the Mass. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Ethel M. Haverkamp, 83, of Buhl, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

She was born Dec. 15, 1921, in Callaway, Minn., the daughter of George and Anna (Wirtz) Brunner. In 1943, Ethel married Norbert Haverkamp. The couple moved to the Buhl area in 1952. She was a member of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. Ethel enjoyed gardening and sewing, and was excellent at cooking and baking. She loved to dance and spent many winters at her home in Texas. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. A special thank-you is extended to the staff at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center for their kindness shown and loving care.

She is survived by her children, Paul (Isabel) Haverkamp of Gilbert, Allan (Judy) Haverkamp of Buhl, Pat (Tom) Ossell of Edina, Mike (Joey) Haverkamp of Mendota Heights, Karen (Mike) Brusseau of Sartell, Minn., and Brenda (Mitch) Miller of Wichita, Kan.; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Jasken of Ogema, Minn., Helen Hanson of Valley City, N.D., and Dorothy Johnson of Norfolk, Neb.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Norbert, in 1977; brother: Herbert Brunner; and sisters, Lucille Rebischke and Anne Brunner.

John J. Smolensky
John J. Smolensky, 87, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm with Rev. Fr. Gregory Grivna of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Chisholm officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday. Interment will be in Chisholm Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Virginia Servicemen’s Color Guard.

John J. Smolensky, 87, of Virginia died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at Leisure Hills Health Center in Hibbing.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1917, in Glen Location-Chisholm to Frank and Paraska (Barniak) Smolensky. John was a Chisholm High School graduate with the Class of 1936. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army in Milwaukee, Wis., then transferred to California. During World War II, John served our country with the Company C 324 Infantry Regiment 44th Division in Central Europe as a cook. He finished his tour of duty as an Army Recruiter. John was united in marriage on May 8, 1944, to Josephine Tramontin in Hollywood, Calif. They moved back to the Iron Range in 1946 where they owned and operated Johnnies Cafe in Virginia. In the early 1950s, he worked for various mining companies until 1957 when he was employed by the City of Virginia Public Works Department for 27 years until his retirement in 1984. John loved to work in his garden, enjoyed cooking, and watching sports. He was also a former member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Chisholm. His sense of humor will be sadly missed by his family.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie (Steve) Turner; a son, Bill Smolensky; granddaughter, Deanne (Brian Highum) Turner; grandson, Michael Tanski; great-granddaughter, Jordana Turner; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Josie in 2003; sisters, Julia Salvini, Ann Sinko and Mary Mehelich; and one brother, William Smolensky.

Mary 'Mitzie' Russ
Mary 'Mitzie' Russ, 94, SERVICES: Funeral Mass and visitation will be held on Tuesday with visitation starting at 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Mass. Father James Scheuer will be officiant. Burial will in the Ely Cemetery in the spring. Family Services by Kerntz Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely. Mary “Mitzie” Russ, 94, of Ely died on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home.

She was born on May 13, 1910, to Joseph and Mary (Shega) Russ. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School Class of 1928. In her late twenties, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and worked at the American Can Company, retiring in the 1970s. She moved back to Ely in 1998. Mary was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the American Fraternal Union. She loved to travel: including numerous trips to Europe and Hawaii. Mary liked to live the “good life”.

She is survived by her two nieces: JoAnne (Roger) Pagel of Hoyt Lakes and Donna Russ of Ely; one nephew: Russell (Doreen) Russ of Florida; godson: Thomas Berrigan of Duluth; other great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph on Nov. 28, 1962, and Mary on April 8, 1970; two brothers: Joseph and Albert Russ; great-nephew Rickey Jay Russ and special friend: Bill Corbett.
