Harry Nelson
Harry Nelson, 84, SERVICES: Funeral services will 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Aurora with Rev. Donald Fisher officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and will continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Burial will be in Rauha Cemetery.

Harry Nelson, 84, of Makinen died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at White Community Hospital in Aurora.

Harry was born Dec. 25, 1920, to Milton and Mina (Krammer) Nelson at Frazee. He attended schools there and also Bemidji, where he graduated from Bemidji High School. He then married Lily Schwoboda on Aug. 16, 1943, at Frazee. He resided in Audubon and Lake Park and was employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad. In October of 1957, he moved to the Makinen area where he farmed and was employed by Erie Mining as a track foreman. He retired from Erie Mining in 1983 and continued farming until his death. He loved his farming and farmed his entire life while working his other jobs. He always maintained that he had the best cows. He also loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Carole (Larry) Lauseng of Palo, Jill (Woody) Sine of Klamath Falls, Ore., and MariAnne (Bobby) Damkroeger of Eveleth; two sons, Steven (Cathy) of Zimmerman, Minn., and Robert of St. Thomas, Minn.; a son-in-law, Jerry Widseth of Eveleth; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lily; daughter, Debby Widseth; brother, Miles; and sisters, Roxsey Gilstead and Angie Schultz.

Jack J. Lehto
Jack J. Lehto, 44, SERVICES: Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in Centennial, Wyo. Memorial services will be held locally at a later date.

Jack J. Lehto, 44, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Britt, died on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in Fort Collins.

He was born Sept. 2, 1960, in Virginia, to Jalmer and Mayme Lehto. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1978.

Survivors include his daughter, Jaclyn (Richard) Wright of Aurora; his mother, Mayme Hilmas of Britt; brother, Raymond (Karen) Lehto of Britt; sisters, Beverly Peterson of Britt and Kathleen (Dan) Dschaak of Britt; two stepbrothers, Duane (Barbara) Hilmas of Longmont, Colo., and Dennis (Edith) Hilmas of North Branch, Minn.; two stepsisters, Barbara Hilmas of Virginia and Gloria (Dennis) Jacobson of Britt; other relatives and friends; and special friend, Jean O’Connor of Fort Collins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jalmer in 1967; and a daughter, Amy.

Dorothy A. Skramstad
Dorothy A. Skramstad, 69, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with Fr. Jon Wild officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Private spring inurnment will be in Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Dorothy A. “DeeDee’’ Skramstad, 69, of Chisholm died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, surrounded by her family.

She was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Chisholm to Tony and Dorothy (Juliani) Lackner. She was a 1953 graduate of Chisholm High School and attended the University of Minnesota, where she worked as a library assistant. She had been a Chisholm resident for most of her life. She was united in marriage on June 2, 1956, in Chisholm to Roy S. Skramstad. She was a homemaker and worked at various jobs, including the Chisholm Adams Clinic, but soon after became the primary caregiver to her parents. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who took a very active role in their lives, unselfishly putting others’ needs ahead of her own. She was active with her class reunion committee, maintaining close friendships with many. Her dedication to her family and friends will continue to be an inspiration. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity and kindness. She will be deeply missed by all that she touched.

Survivors include her husband, Roy S.; children, Kristin (Dan Madich) Libro and Mark A. Skramstad, both of Chisholm; grandchildren, Lynsey Skramstad of North St. Paul and Mark L. Skramstad of Cloquet; brother, Louis (Rose) Lackner of Sun City, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Gloria Lackner of Chisholm; niece, Carol (Jim) Brandt of Chisholm; nephew, Jon (Sheryl) Lackner of Duluth; several cousins; a host of friends; and special pal, Emma.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Paul on Oct. 11, 1997; and by a brother, John.

Dwayne Hervey

Dwayne Hervey, 73, of Virginia died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

He was born Nov. 11, 1931, in Clarissa, Minn., to Patrick and Blanche (Sales) Hervey. He worked as a production truck driver for an area mining company. He and his former wife, Joan, had a farm in Iron, and he loved to train Labradors. Most recently he resided at his beloved Third Avenue Hotel.

He is survived by his girlfriend, Lois Palazzari, and friend, Marge Russo, both of Virginia; children, Debbie, Byron and Vicky; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a half-brother, Bud.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Keith.

Dorothy M. Karasti

Dorothy M. Karasti, 74, of Winton, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at Ely Bloomenson Hospital.

She was born Aug. 1, 1930, in Soudan, to Charles and Sylvia (Wallin) Peitso. Dorothy graduated from Ely Memorial High School with the class of 1948. She then attended Ely Junior College for nursing. On July 10, 1949, she married Allan O. Karasti in Ely. Dorothy worked as a clerk at JcPenny, was the deputy clerk of the Winton Liquor Store, and was the production supervisor at the Ely Echo until her retirement in 1988.

Dorothy loved to care for her family and home. She loved to cook, read, care for her house plants and rock hounding on the North Shore with her husband. Her family was very important to her and she had spent six months caring for her brother’s family during a medical time of need.

Dorothy was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Conservationist with Common Sense, and on the Winton City Council. She had also spent three years participating with Miller Dwan in a medical study to try to find a cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Thomas of Fall Lake, and Robert of Ely; grandson, Kraig of Brooklyn Park; a brother, Richard (Lorraine) Peitso of River Falls, Wis.; and a niece, Leah Peitso of St. Paul.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allan, on Jan. 9, 2000; and two brothers, Robert and Gordon Peitso.

Julia M. Kochaver
Julia M. Kochaver, 99, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Michael Schmitz will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Pallbearers are John Kayfes, Marvin Imbertson, John Sporer, Dennis Seguin, Dean Langord and Richard Toenyan. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.

Julia M. Kochaver, 99, of Hibbing, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the Leisure Hills Health Care Center in Hibbing.

She was born March 31, 1905, in Soudan, to Martin and Gertrude Stukel. She was a resident of Hibbing since 1940. She was a graduate of the Virginia schools and the Duluth Business College. She was employed with the Virginia School District as a stenographer. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing and a past member of St. Joseph’s Circle. She loved traveling and being in the outdoors. Julia and her husband, John, spent many winters in Texas. She also enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Julia is survived by her brother, Joseph M. Stukel of Hibbing; sister, Angela Feltman of Spokane, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Kochaver; two brothers, Anton “Tony” and Martin Stukel; and three sisters, Mary and Anna Stukel and Gertrude Berg of Duluth.

Fred 'Jeep' Tomsich
Fred 'Jeep' Tomsich, 83, SERVICES: Private family services will be held at a later date. The family is assisted by Kerntz Brothers, A Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely.

Fred “Jeep” Tomsich, 83, of Ely, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home.

Fred was a life-long resident of Ely.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Amelia; a son, Robert (Kay) of Colorado; and a daughter, Susan (John) Wavrin of Ely; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Tomsich; one sister; and seven brothers.

Helen R. Nyrhinen
Helen R. Nyrhinen, 80, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia. The Rev. John Doyle will be the celebrant. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and continue from 11 a.m. until the Mass Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Helen R. Nyrhinen, 80, of Virginia, formerly of Britt, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at St. Michael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 25, 1924, to Steve and Katherine (Miskulin) Devich in Virginia. She grew up in Virginia and graduated with the Class of 1942. Helen continued her education at the Virginia Junior College. She worked at the First National Bank as a teller. Helen was united in marriage to Solomon “Sol” Nyrhinen on Nov. 3, 1951, in Virginia. They lived at Lake Leander and moved to Britt in 1953. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Virginia Regional Medical Center, retiring on Jan. 31, 1989. Helen moved to Virginia in 1999, and volunteered at the Hospital Gift Shop. Her favorite things were cooking, baking, and being generous. She was a member of the Study Club.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol Nyrhinen of Pine City; son, Steve (M’liss) Nyrhinen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Nyrhinen; grandson, Matthew Nyrhinen; two great-grandchildren, Micaila and Katie; three sisters, Katherine Jones of Virginia, Elizabeth (Neil) Hastings of Vancouver, Wash., Rose Marie (John) Reisinger of Klosters, Switzerland; brother, Steven Devich of Minnetonka; 13 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sol on May 24, 1991.

Michael A. Altobelli
Michael A. Altobelli, 77, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John Doyle as celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Michael A. Altobelli, 77, of Virginia, died Sunday, Jan 2, 2005, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1927, in Dilworth, Minn., to Antonio and Grace (Lucarelli) Altobelli, and grew up there. Michael had been a Virginia resident since 1947. He retired from USX in 1981 as a mine control supervisor after many years of service. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Virginia and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 1640 of Virginia.

Survivors include one niece, Michele (Robb) Engstrom of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; two nephews, Anthony Sacchetti of Spring Lake Park, Minn., and James (Roxanne) Sacchetti of Forest Lake, Minn.; one grandnephew, Matthew Engstrom of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; and one brother-in-law, Americo Sacchetti of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Carmella Sacchetti in 2000.

John R. Thomas
John R. Thomas, 77, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel in Eveleth, with Msgr. Aleksander Suchan officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.

John R. Thomas, 77, of Hereford, Ariz., formerly of Leonidas and Eveleth, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at his residence.

He was born March 26, 1927, in Leonidas, to John J. and Agnes J. (Music) Thomas. He retired from the railroad, having worked for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railroad and the Denver Rio Grande. John was a World War II Navy veteran. He loved cooking, photography, and music.

He is survived by his daughter, Patte Lea Thomas (fiancé James Braden) of Duluth; a grandson, John Patrick Thomas of Duluth; a sister, Dorothea (Jack) Norman of Virginia; and nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene in 1995.

Linnea Marie Anderson
Linnea Marie Anderson, 85, SERVICES: Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Saturday in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Burial will be in Sandy Lake Cemetery, Sandy Lake, Minn.

Linnea Marie Anderson, 85, of Duluth passed away on Jan. 4, 2005. She was born on June 6, 1919 in Duluth and moved to Carlton, Minn., at age two.

She was the youngest child of Swedish immigrants Hilda and Alexander Eklund. She graduated from Wrenshall High School in 1937 and the Young and Hursh Business College in 1940. Her employers included the Office of Price Administration, Lockheed Aircraft, U.S. Navel Air Station-Widby Island, Wash., and R. Vernon Eckman, Attorney-Duluth. Linnea married Elmer “Andy” Anderson February 10, 1945. They raised their sons in Lakeside and moved to Ely Lake near Eveleth in 1966. She was active in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Lakeside and Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. She enjoyed ceramics, gardening, and traveling with her husband around the world. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Duluth in 1988. She was one of the first residents of the Mount Royal Pines, and she enjoyed her time there with the many friends she made during her 17 year residency.

She spent many days managing the affairs of her older siblings prior to their deaths, including her brothers, Rudolph Eklund, Herbert Eklund, Elna Melvin. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Vera Crosby and her brothers, Gilbert, Felix, and Evar Eklund.

Linnea will be deeply missed and is survived by her sons, Stephen (Kye) of North Oaks, Minn. and David (Michelle) of Duluth; grandchildren, Amy, Carver, Alexander, and Elliot.

Leo P. Jakel
Leo P. Jakel, 84, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert. The Rev. Frank Perkovich will be celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the mass at the church. Burial with military honors accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

Leo P. Jakel, 84, of Gilbert, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Heritage Manor in Chisholm.

He was born May 12, 1920, in Hutter, rural Gilbert, to John and Magdeline Jakel. He attended school in Gilbert and later served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Christine Ferkul on Nov. 24, 1944, in Gilbert.

Leo spent time in Chicago working for Diamond T company prior to working for Erie Mining Company. He retired from Erie Mining Company as an assistant general foreman in the electrical department.

Leo was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a 50-year member of Quayle-Shuster-Truman-Muhich American Legion Post No. 241 in Aurora, the KSKJ Lodge and the Gilbert Senior Citizens. He enjoyed watching baseball and was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his daughters, Margaret (John) Siskar of San Clemente, Calif., and Kathy (Thomas) Phillipich of Chisholm; brother, Max Jakel of Gilbert; sisters, Josie Polich, Jennie Miller and Madge Krall, all of Chicago; grandchildren, Jeff Phillipich, Amy Phillipich and Gary (Johanna) Siskar; great-grandchild, Sky Siskar, and one expected great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Christine; daughter, Connie; son, Paul; brothers, John, Louis, Tony and Frank; sisters, Lucy Jakel, Mary Korcha and Julie Turk.
