Frank Zupec Jr.
Frank Zupec Jr., 65, SERVICES: A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Ely. The Rev. James Scheuer will officiate. Frank Zupec Jr., 65, of Ely died at home on Jan. 4, 2005, after a long illness.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1939, to Jennie (Kromar) and Frank Zupec Sr. in Ely. Frank was a 1957 graduate of Ely Memorial High School and was a lifelong resident of Ely. Frank loved the lakes and woods and guided on Basswood Lake for many years. He married Paula Ahola on Aug. 26, 1967, and their best times were spent with family and friends at Grassy Lake. Frank will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He was a United States Army veteran and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Frank worked at Reserve Mining and LTV Steel until his retirement.

Frank is survived by his daughter, Renee Zupec of Eveleth; son, Don (Cheryl) Zupec of Duluth; grandson, Brady Zupec; sister, Joan (Albert) Leustek of Ely; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Paula, in 1994; and a nephew, Rory Vesel.

Helen Caroline Carlson

Helen Caroline Carlson, 85 of Park Rapids, Minn. passed away on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005 in Park Rapids.

She is survived by children, Robert (Sally) Carlson of Ely, Janet (Gary) Erchul of Ely, Mary (George) Yapel of Virginia, Danny (Becky) Carlson of Faribault, Minn., Elizabeth Pearson of Duluth, Marcy (Tom) Trembath of Grand Rapids, and Diane (Paul) Dennis of Park Rapids.

Georgene E. Johnson
Georgene E. Johnson, 79, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alango. Rev. Don Guttormson will be the officiant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The casket bearers will be: Adam and Travis Leinonen, Paul and Dean Edstrom, and Dennis and Barry Johnson. Spring interment will be in the Alango Township Cemetery.

Georgene Johnson, 79, of Bear River, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living Center in Virginia.

She was born in Hibbing on Nov. 19, 1925, the daughter of Arthur and Ile (Kuster) Filbert. She grew up in Hibbing and Field Township (near Cook), and graduated from the Alango High School in 1944. She then worked for several years for the Defense Department in Brigham, Utah, making airplanes during the World War 11 war effort. She returned to the Cook area, where she raised her children. She worked many years for the J.C. Penney Co., and also for several businesses in Cook, where she was well known and liked. She married Duane Johnson on Aug. 19, 1977, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alango. They moved to Bear River after marriage. She and Duane enjoyed traveling together, and were to every state except Alaska. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Georgene enjoyed and appreciated her flower gardens, and also admired other flower gardens in her travels. She and Duane had many good times together, and liked dancing. Georgene lived at the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living Center in Virginia the past two years.

She is survived by her husband Duane; four sons, Wilfred “Butch” Leinonen of Buhl, Duane (Martha) Leinonen of Tallahassee, Fla., Dale (Vicki) Leinonen of Angora, and Kevin (Theresa) Johnson of Dothan, Ala.; two daughters, Tammy (Farley) Fox of Britt and Kathy (Phil) Anderson of Virginia; one sister, Arline (Greg) Antus of Angora, 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ile in 1993; her father, Arthur in 1987; two brothers, Richard Filbert in 1931, and Wesley Kuster in 1993.

Vern C. Nelson
Vern C. Nelson, 68, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. A gathering of family and friends will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Reuben Rosnau will be the officiant. The honorary bearers will be Vern’s five grandsons, John Dean Nelson Lockwood, Louis Nelson Watt, Edison Nelson Watt, Gunnar Vernon Nelson and Olin Clark Nelson. Military rites will be accorded by the combined honor guards of Cook VFW Post 1757 and the Orr American Legion Post 480. Spring interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Angora. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Vern C. Nelson, 68, of Angora, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

Vern was born in Cook on March 31, 1936, the son of Vernon and Helen (Hedican) Nelson. He grew up in Virginia, where he graduated from high school and lived most of his life. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and earned the rank of sergeant. While still in the military, he was united in marriage to Janet W. Harvey on May 10, 1958, at Tunkhannock, Pa. The couple settled in Virginia, where they raised their children. Vern was an electrical contractor and co-owned Nelson-Collie Electric in Virginia, then owned Associated Electric in Cook. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 294, along with belonging to the Virginia Elks and Moose lodges. In retirement, he ran the trail groomer for the Cook Timberwolves Snowmobile Club, his dream vocation. His hobbies and joys were being with his wife and partner, Janet, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who will always remember the tractor rides. His wit, humor and love of family will be greatly missed, but always remembered.

He is survived by his wife and partner, Janet; four children, Colleen (Richard “Dick”) Maki of Roseau, Kelly Nelson of Springboro, Ohio, John (Amy) Nelson of Angora and Tracey (Doug) Watt of Cook; two sisters, Joan (Ben) Collie and Judy (Richard) Poupard, both of Tower, five dear grandchildren, along with numerous caring nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncle, and of course his special pet dog, Nellie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen in 1976 and father Vernon in 1996.

Richard F. Kuberka
Richard F. Kuberka, 76, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Rockford, Ill., with the Rev. William Wentink, chaplain OSF St. Anthony, officiating. Visitation for one hour before the serivce. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Richard F. Kuberka, 76, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at St. Anne Center in Rockford, Ill.

He was born March 22, 1928, in Eveleth to Frank and Margaret (McDonald) Kuberka. He married Delores Fiori in 1953 in Indiana. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He moved to Rockford in 1952. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Rockford, and St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower. He graduated from Virginia Junior College and Stout State in Menominee, Wis. He began teaching industrial arts in 1952 at West High School. He continued his education at NIU DeKalb where he earned an advanced degree and began his counseling career at West until the closing when he transferred to Guilford High School. He retired in 1991. Richard and Delores spent their summers at their Lake Vermilion home. Many happy memories and many wonderful friends were made. He was a member of the Elks, Moose Lodge, American Legion, VFW, past president of the Rockford Education Association and director of the NEA.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; two stepchildren, Diane (David) Heller of Chicago and Dale Diuri of Marion, Ind.; two grandchildren, Lisa (Aaron) Brooks and Matthew Behr of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Dylan Brooks; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joyce Enger.

Bert Borden
Bert Borden, 86, SERVICES: Funeral at 1 p.m. Monday in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel in Hibbing. The Rev. Jack Harris will officiate. Interment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Bert Borden, 86, beloved husband, precious dad and grandfather, of Yuma, Ariz., and formerly of Pengilly, came to this life on Jan. 1, 1919, in Columbia, S.D., and left his life peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the LaMesa Healthcare Center in Yuma.

Bert was kind, caring and thoughtful, always thinking of others before himself. He was the sweetest man you had ever met and was loved so very much by his family. He will be very sadly missed. He made friends wherever he went and will be missed by them as well. Bert lived a long and happy life, and upon retirement from U.S. Steel after 32 years, had spent summers at Swan Lake and wintered in Yuma, Ariz., prior to making Yuma his permanent home. He was a Mason for more than 50 years in Hibbing and also was an active Shriner. Bert served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

He is survived by his wife, Fran; daughters, Judy (Mike) Johnson of Rosemount, Minn., Karen (Dan Peterson) Nerison of Lake Elmo, Minn., Debbie (Richard) Malnar of Gilbert; son, Keith (Nancy Jo) of Flagstaff, Ariz.; stepdaughter, Mary (Ron) Miller of Yuma; stepsons, Fred Hoff of Ohio and John Hoff of North Carolina; grandchildren, Erin, Megan, Chris, Kelly, Danni, Aric and Corey; great-grandchildren, Michelle and Taylor; and stepsister, Irene McCormick of Brainerd.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his first wife, Norma, in March of 1991.

Lance A. Taylor
Lance A. Taylor, 34, SERVICES: Memorial service was held Dec. 21 at Mizpah United Church of Christ in Hopkins, Minn., with private burial. Arrangements by Morris Nilsen Chapel.

Lance A. Taylor, 34, of Minneapolis, died Dec. 17, 2004, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital.

He was the valedictorian of the Eveleth High School class of 1988 and was a mortgage broker in Minneapolis.

He was the beloved son, brother and friend to his survivors, including his mother, Loretta Taylor of Virginia; siblings, Jeff (Nancy) Taylor of Palisade, Minn., Pam (Gene) Gothberg of Oregon, Duane (Rosa) Bischoff of Calumet, Minn., Barbara (Roy) Hendricks of Wawina, Minn., Ronald (Denise) Bischoff of Rapid City, S.D., and Kris Taylor of Virginia; and many other relatives and very special friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul; brother, Stanley; and nephew, David.

Jody K. (Riley) Topping
Jody K. (Riley) Topping, 45, SERVICES: Funeral 10 a.m. Tuesday in the United Methodist Church in Eveleth, with the Rev. Shirley Nelson officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth, and will continue one hour prior to service Tuesday in the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery.

Jody K. Topping, 45, of Eveleth died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at home.

She was born March 30, 1959, in Bemidji, Minn., the daughter of Janice Wilcox and Richard Riley. She grew up in Bemidji, Virginia and Eveleth. She graduated from high school in Eveleth and lived most of her life there. She gradauted from the Mesabi Community College in 1978 with a degree in nursing and made nursing her lifelong career. She worked for the Arrowhead Health Care Center in Eveleth for 20 years and was currently employed by the Fairview Clinic System, working mostly out of the Hibbing Clinic. She married Edward A. Topping in 1979. Following their divorce, they remained lifelong friends and she continued a strong friendship with Ed’s mother, Audrey Brown, and his sister, Deborah Ross-Jagunich. She had a special talent for making people feel loved and appreciated. Jody enjoyed scrapbooking with friends and time with her cat, Jozie Mae. Jody will forever be remembered for her kindness, her forgiving nature and her value of friendship.

She is survived by her ex-husband and his family; her daughter, Ashley Topping (fiance, Ryan Wallace); her father, Richard Riley, and stepmother, Joan, of Bemidji; sisters, Lisa (John) Mattila of Bemidji and Theresa Riley of Minneapolis; her brother, Rick (Jodi) Riley, of Bemidji; numerous aunts, including a special relationship with her aunt, Dixie Dingman, of Eveleth; and uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Janice Wilcox, in 1981; her grandparents; and recently her grandmother, Lila Conklin, in 2004.

Mary F. Kmett
Mary F. Kmett, 90, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with the Rev. Jon Wild as celebrant. There will be no visitation. Burial will follow in the Chisholm Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm.

Mary F. Kmett, 90, of Chisholm died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Leisure Hills Health Center in Hibbing.

She was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Eveleth to Anton and Gabriella (Zupancich) Masel. She grew up in Eveleth and was a longtime Chisholm resident before moving to Hibbing.

She was united in marriage on June 9, 1949, in Eveleth to Edward J. Kmett. She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Chisholm.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward J., on May 30, 1992; and also by four brothers.

Carl Erik Erikson
Carl Erik Erikson, 92, SERVICES: Memorial service 1 p.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church in Aurora, with the Rev. Elton Brown officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Inurnment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.

Carl Erik Erikson, 92, of Aurora died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

He was born March 7, 1912, in Aurora to Carl and Clara (Johnson) Erikson. He was a 1930 graduate of Aurora High School and later attended the former Virginia Junior College. He was a graduate of the Duluth School of Business and served the country as a World War II Army veteran. On June 16, 1952, he married Luella Krueger in Tripoli, Iowa. Carl worked for Pickands-Mather Iron Mining Co. as a statistical clerk with 26 years of service, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Aurora, a member and past master of the Biwabik Masonic Lodge 293, receiving its Hiram Award, member and past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 262 of Biwabik and the Aurora American Legion Post 241.

Survivors include his sister, Clara Jacobson, of Aurora; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Jeanine Rathbone, of Tripoli, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Luella; sister, Anna Sims; brother, Lester Erikson; and niece, Lornice Gow.

Betty R. Olson
Betty R. Olson, 71, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. today at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, with the Rev. John Doyle as celebrant. Visitation one hour prior to service. Betty R. Olson, 71, of Virginia, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Ely, the daughter of Louis and Teresa Lesar. Betty was raised in Ely and graduated from Ely High School. Following high school, she moved to Virginia, and was employed by the Trenti Law Firm for 31 years, retiring in December 1995. She was active in the Senior Citizens Club, the YMCA, TOPS and the Red Hat Society. Betty was also a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, its choirs, St. Monica’s Guild, and served as an RSVP volunteer.

We would like to thank Mom’s friends for the cards, letters and prayers, the Tekautz family for the care of Mom’s house, and a special thanks to Dr. Nikcevich, Deacon Roger, special friend Nell, Dale, Gary, Mike, and all the staff at St. Mary’s Hospice for all of the loving care and support given to our mother during her illness.

She is survived by two daughters, Marie Olson of Duluth and Shirley (Bill) Harvey of New Brighton; grandchildren, Oliver and Adam Harvey of New Brighton; sisters, Mary Smuk and Molly (Rudy) Marolt, both of Ely; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Olga Mondati; and brothers: John, Fred and Louis Lesar.

James Lawrence 'Sully' Sullivan
James Lawrence 'Sully' Sullivan, 49, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. David Forsman will be celebrant. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and continue for one hour before the Mass at the church. Cremation will follow the Mass with inurnment in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

James Lawrence “Sully’’ Sullivan, 49, of Aurora, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at White Community Hospital in Aurora.

He was born Jan. 27, 1955, in Hibbing to Hugh and Margaret (Clark) Sullivan. He was a 1973 graduate of Aurora-Hoyt Lakes High School and later worked for Erie Mining Company in Hoyt Lakes. He married Kimberly Gregorich on Aug. 3, 1979. He worked for Minnesota Explosives as an explosives technician and truck driver from 1987 until 1996. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed grouse hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Kimberly; daughter, Nicole (Nicholas) Cossalter of Eveleth; son, Ryan Sullivan of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; sisters, Katherine (Ron) Sullivan-Maye of Apple Valley, Minn., and Patricia (Robert) Maturi of Britt; aunts and uncle, Mary Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis., and Jack and Joyce Haskins of Detroit; mother-in-law, Phyllis Gregorich of Virginia; one expected grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael “Mickey’’; and father-in-law, Joseph “Kuma’’ Gregorich.
