Juliana 'Jay' Anderson
Juliana 'Jay' Anderson, 94, SERVICES: Funeral at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to the time of service. The Rev. Frank S. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Buyck at a later date. Arrangements by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Juliana “Jay’’ Anderson, 94, of Virginia died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

Juliana was born on Jan. 27, 1910, to Jacob and Merj (Lushine) Pogorelce in Mountain Iron, where she was raised and attended school, graduating in 1927. She was united in marriage to Carl B. Anderson in 1946 in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Juliana enjoyed her farm in Buyck from 1956 to 1986.

Survivors include her daughter, Juliane Johnson Badanjak of Virginia; stepson, Bob (Emmy Lou) Anderson of Crane Lake; two stepdaughters, Beverly Culbert of Virginia and Betty (Elton) Thayer of Virginia; 21 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl, in 1965; son, Bruce H. Johnson, in 2003; great-grandson, Nathaniel Jay LaVoie; sisters and brothers, Marie Groenen, Jack Pogorelce, Anne Nesbitt, Steve Pogorelce, Victor Susnik, Angeline Johnson and James Susnik.

E. Esko Jokinen
E. Esko Jokinen, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with visitation from noon to the time of service. The Rev. Melvin Johnson will officiate. Burial in Embarrass Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association.

E. Esko Jokinen, 72, of Ely Lake, Eveleth, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at his home.

He was born Aug. 7, 1932, to Eino and Lydia (Kangas) Jokinen in Biwabik. Esko grew up and attended school in Embarrass. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was married in 1955 to Marion Benchina in Eveleth. Following marriage they lived in Virginia before moving to Ely Lake in 1958. Esko was employed by Range Cooperatives Inc. and Gopher State Oil Company prior to working as a maintenance mechanic at Eveleth Taconite. He was a past commander of Mesaba Range Post 1172, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Eveleth and a member of United Steelworkers of America Local 6860.

Surviving are his wife, Marion; two sons, Martin (Shelley) Jokinen of Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Warren Jokinen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandchildren, Claire and Paul Jokinen; two sisters, Paula Wood of Grinsbro, Ga., and Luana Rautio of Fridley, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dorothy Mae Curtis
Dorothy Mae Curtis, 74, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Donald Norr will officiate. Visitation for one hour before the service at the church. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Dorothy Mae Curtis, 74, of Virginia, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in the Virginia Convalescent Center.

She was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to William and Evelyn Scott. Dorothy lived in an orphanage until the age of 4 and was adopted by the Wobermin family. Her name became Dorothy Wobermin. Following Wobermins’ death when she was 7, she was adopted by a second family and became Dorothy Mae Hanson. She graduated from high school in Colorado and married Finnely Walburn in May of 1952.

Dorothy was a homemaker with a strong Christian faith and attended church regularly, often at the Salvation Army Church. In 1968 she moved to Michigan and became active in the Baptist Church. On Sept. 14, 1970, she married Henry Curtis. In 1989 she returned to Minnesota and resided at the Alice Nettell Tower in Virginia. She was a volunteer at the Virginia Regional Medical Center and currently attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed cooking and most recently enjoyed living at the Convalescent Care Center, where she remained active in its activities and visited with staff and residents often.

Survivors include her children, Timothy (Cheryl) Walburn of Louisville, Ky., Patrick Walburn of Mt. Angel, Ore., Thomas (Kris) Walburn of Aurora and Judith Walburn of Wendell, Ohio; sisters, Ethelyn of Colorado; grandchildren, William Joseph Rainaldi, Zachary Walburn and Hannah, Amber and Kelly Walburn; one great-grandchild, Tanner Joseph Rainaldi; and step-granddaughter, Heather.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; and brother, Edward, in infancy.

Mary Terese Green
Mary Terese Green, 51, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing.

Mary Terese Green, 51, died of natural causes at the Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette, Wyo., on Jan.8, 2005.

She was born Dec. 25, 1953, to Jim and Louise (Ongaro) Green. Mary was a graduate of Hibbing High School.

She is survived by a daughter, Robin Helfer of Clear Lake, Minn.; grandsons, Masons and Dalton; two sisters, Judy (Gary) Montgomery of Spicewood, Texas, and Sandy (Don Harter) Maturi of Duluth; two brothers, Jim (Bernice) Green of Wasilla, Alaska, and Pat (Mary) Green of Virginia; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Louise Green, and a nephew, Tony Maturi.

Joseph Rocco Donofrio
Joseph Rocco Donofrio, 78, SERVICES: Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Range Funeral Home and will continue from 11 a.m. until the noon Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday at the Sacred Heart Church in Virginia. The Rev. John Doyle will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia.

Joseph Rocco Donofrio, 78, of Virginia, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Giuseppe Donofrio on Dec. 18, 1926, to Rocco and Maria Annunziata Gabriela (Conte) Donofrio in Montifalcone, Valfortore, Italy. His family immigrated to Virginia when he was an infant. Joseph grew up and attended school in Virginia, graduating from Roosevelt High School. Joseph was a veteran of the United States Army.

He attended Virginia Junior College and the University of Minnesota in Duluth where he received his Bachelor and Masters degrees. Joseph was united in marriage to Gwen Virginia Alcott on Aug. 11, 1951, in Virginia. He taught school in South Dakota and Grand Marais prior to 28 years of service as a teacher, coach and counselor at Denfeld High School in Duluth. Joseph retired in 1987 to his family home in Virginia and to the cabin he built at Lake Vermilion. Lake Vermilion has provided many cherished memories for his family.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Duluth and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia. He was also a member of the Italian-American Club, the I’Cantatori, PUG’S Club and the Northern Club. Sports and singing were his lifelong passions. His love of the Lord, love of life and of people was evident in his never-ending smile. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen; three sons, Rocci Donofrio of Virginia, Dan (Sally) Donofrio of Duluth, and Tom (Melissa) Donofrio of Hermantown; eight grandchildren, Nick, Tyler, Will, Katy, Cory, Angela, Mariah and Sarah Donofrio; sister, Carmella (Dolly) Dote of Chicago; and brother, Tony (Marge) Donofrio of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Evelyn D. Lambert
Evelyn D. Lambert, 88, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Peter Muhich will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Pallbearers are Brian Boerbon, Ryan Haraden, Sean Haraden, Nate Jacky, and Jesse Fisher. Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.

Evelyn D. Lambert, 88, of Virginia, formerly of Hibbing, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the St. Michael’s Nursing Home in Virginia.

She was born Dec. 23, 1916, to Nels and Anna M. (Johnson) Backman in Barrett, Minn. She had been a resident of Virginia for 11 years, coming from Hibbing, where she had been a longtime resident, and also a resident in Sun Lakes, Ariz., during the winter months. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, her bridge club, sewing club, and church circle. She enjoyed the outdoors, dancing, bowling, fishing, and was an avid bridge player.

She is survived by her four daughters, JoAnn (Charles) Campbell of Los Alamos, N.M., Cheryl (George) Haraden of Mountain Iron, Jamie (Jeff Sella) Lambert of Shoreview, Minn., and Risha (Thomas) Loushine of Chico, Calif.; two brothers, Harold Backman of Babbitt and Harvey (Elsie) Backman of Billings, Mont.; sister, Betty (Jerry) Hoppe of Minnetonka, Minn.; sister-in-law, Glendiva Backman of Alexandria, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Kelly Fisher, Ryan Haraden, Sean Haraden, Greg Campbell, Chris Campbell, Brian Boerbon, and Stacy Jacky; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Anna M. (Johnson) Backman; husband, Wallace Lambert in 1983; brother, Mervin Backman; and three sisters, Sharon Backman, Rose Backman and Ione Backman.

Eino J. Bukkila
Eino J. Bukkila, 94, SERVICES: Visitation will be Thursday from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Bob Simensen will officiate. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Eino J. Bukkila, 94, of Virginia, formerly of Kinney, Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Eino was born April 22, 1910, to Thomas and Josophine Pukkila in Kinney. He grew up and attended school in Kinney. As a young man he went to Montana where he worked on ranches. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre. Following his discharge he went to Blue Earth where he met his future wife, Ruth. Eino was united in marriage to Ruth Marie Knudtson on April 28, 1947, in Blue Earth. The couple returned to Kinney. He worked for Oliver Mining and later U.S. Steel, retiring in 1974 from Minntac. They moved to Virginia in 1996. He was a member of Pratt-Volden-Mickelson-Anderson American Legion Post No. 239 in Virginia.

Surviving include his wife, Ruth; daughter, Tina (Edward) Enerson of Kimball; son, Thomas Bukkila of Brainerd; two grandchildren, Heidi Enerson of North Branch, Shane Enerson in England; three great-grandchildren, James, Kayla, and Karlene; two nieces in Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Wayne Bukkila.

Leonard R. Kokal
Leonard R. Kokal, 74, SERVICES: Visitation will be from noon until the 1 p.m. Memorial Service today at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Jeffrey Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Leonard Kokal Fund at Edgewood Vista, Virginia.

Leonard R. Kokal, 74, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Virginia, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005 in Mesa.

Leonard was born on July 13, 1930, to Anthony and Martha (Kolari) Kokal in Aurora. He lived the majority of his life in Virginia, as well as in Mesa, Ariz. the past 10 years. Leonard was united in marriage to Remona Carpenter on June 16, 1951, in Eveleth. He was a former service truck driver for LTV Steel in Hoyt Lakes for 32 years. Leonard was a veteran serving in the United States Navy.

Surviving are his wife, Remona; two daughters, Connie (Gene) Kotnik of Eveleth, and Cindy (Scott) McPherson of Hickory, N.C.; son, Leonard (Janet) Kokal of Virginia; six grandchildren, Sara Kokal, Amanda and Alyssa Kotnik, Keith and Kevin Kokal, Marija McPherson; sister, Joyce Maki of Ely.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Randy.

Paul M. Hanka
Paul M. Hanka, 89, SERVICES: A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service on Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely. The Rev. Bill Fossum will officiate at the service. Military Honors accorded by the Babbitt Color Guard. A spring interment will be held in the Argo Cemetery in Babbitt. Family services provided by Kerntz Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely. Paul M. Hanka, 89, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in St. Croix Falls, Wis., after a year-long battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Embarrass, the son of Alex and Elizabeth (Saari) Hanka. Paul grew up and graduated from Embarrass in 1931, and briefly attended Ely Junior College. He became self-employed and owned a logging camp in Embarrass until World War II started, when he volunteered and served in the U.S. Army in Kodiac Bay, Alaska. In 1945, Paul moved to Chicago where he met his future wife, Esther Johnson. They married and moved to Embarrass with Esther's son, Donald. Paul worked in construction in the various projects of that time period: Hoyt Lakes, Erie Mining Company, MP&L Power Plant, etc. Paul and Esther moved from their home in Embarrass to Lake Vermilion and stayed there 18 years until the property became too difficult to care for. The couple then moved to Babbitt in 1990. After Esther passed on, Paul moved to Wyoming, Minn., in 1998 to be close to his stepson and daughter-in-law. Paul was an excellent story-teller and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his stepson, Donald (Gretchen) Selander of Chisago City; granddaughters, Debra and Lori; grandsons, Douglas of Florida, and Donald, Daniel and David of the Minneapolis area; brothers, Henry (Katherine) of Aurora and Walter (Domenica) of Pike River; sisters, Adele Buono of Saugerties, N.Y., and Anelma (Art Richter) of New York; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Esther in 1997; sister, Inez Takkunen; brother, Levi Hanka; niece, Susan Maki; and nephew, Richard Hanka.

Mickey Kelly
Mickey Kelly, 16, Funeral 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hibbing, with the Rev. Jack Harris officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Wesley United Methodist Church and one hour prior to service Friday in the Blessed Sacrament Church. Pallbearers will be Eric Johnsrud, Charlie Hilligoss, Tony Sterle, Andrew Rainey, Matt Anderson, Mike Davidson, Jay Williams and Andy Tanem. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing. Memorials may be made to the Mickey Kelly Memorial Scholarship.

Mickey Kelly, 16, of Balkan Township died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

He was born Aug. 16, 1988, in St. Paul, Minn., to Ryan and Dana (Sprowls) Kelly. He moved to this area in 1998, where he was very involved with drama and theater, with his last role playing the young Elwood Blues in the Hibbing Community Theater’s production of The Blues Brothers. Being a young man with a remarkable Christian faith, he belonged to the Wesley United Methodist Church and its praise band. He also sang in the Hibbing High School’s Northern Lights Group and was a bass and guitar player in the band No Parking Anytime.

He is survived by his parents, Ryan and Dana; sister, Katy, of Minneapolis; two brothers, Sean and Seamis, both at home; paternal grandparents Joseph and Joan Kelly of Longboat Key, Fla.; maternal grandparents Craig and Mary Ellen Sprowls of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; extended family, including aunts and uncles and their children, Kurt and Liz Fuhr with Sarah and Kristen, Erik and Kelly Paulsen with Cassie, Briana, Tayler and Liesl, Sarah Kelly and Ken Sigel with Erin, Tim and Alex and Stuart and Katy Noun with Maggie and Teddy.

Lee E. Nyman
Lee E. Nyman, 73, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Daniel L. Johns and the Rev. Eric Lemonholm will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to United in Christ Lutheran Church’s Building Fund. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Lee E. Nyman, 73, of Eveleth, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at his home.

He was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Eveleth, to Hugo and Helen Nyman. Lee graduated from Eveleth High School in 1949 and graduated from Eveleth Junior College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having been stationed in Jacksonville and Pensacola, Fla., and in Hawaii. He attended Michigan Tech and graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a master’s degree in teaching. He taught science and math in the Eveleth-Gilbert School District and retired in special education. Lee was a member of United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth.

He is survived by his brothers, Glenn and Jon, both of Eveleth, and Dale (Diane) of Duluth; two nephews; one niece; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Glenn Calvin LeBlanc
Glenn Calvin LeBlanc, 72, SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Trinity Methodist Church in Hoyt Lakes. The Rev. Elton Brown will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Glenn Calvin LeBlanc, 72, of Hoyt Lakes, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at his residence, following a one-year battle with bile duct cancer.

He was born Nov. 10, 1932, in Duluth, Minn., to George and Margaret (Enos) LeBlanc. He attended Grand Rapids Agricultural School and later graduated from Duluth Central in 1950. He married Doris Alvar on Oct. 25, 1951, in Duluth. He was employed at Erie Mining Company in 1956 as a draftsman and later retired from LTV Mining Company as a maintenance planner with 34 years of service.

He was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing poker and wintering in Mesa, Ariz.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris; daughter, Pamela (Ron) Hoechst of Hoyt Lakes; sons, Bary (Mary) LeBlanc of Duluth and Bradley LeBlanc of Hoyt Lakes; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd (Jane) and James (Janice) of Duluth; sisters, Georgia Johnson and Karen Thompson of Duluth, Diane (O’Neil) Westling of Island Lake and Mary (Ken) Nelson of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret; and grandson, Barry Dale LeBlanc.
