Joseph Paul Anzelc
Joseph Paul Anzelc, 81, SERVICES: Funeral 2:30 p.m. Friday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora, with the Rev. John O’Donnell officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial with military honors accorded by Aurora-Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

Jospeh Paul Anzelc, 81, of Virginia and formerly of Aurora, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 22, 1923, in Aurora to Frank and Theresa (Fabian) Anzelc. He attended school in Aurora and later served the country in World War II as an Army veteran as part of the ski troops at Camp Hale, Colo. He married Rita Kishel on Jan. 27, 1947, in Virginia. He worked for Lake Mine as a production truck driver. He spent most of his career working as head mechanic and school bus driver for the Aurora Public School system. He retired fron there in 1985 with 30 years of service.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Aurora American Legion and the Virginia Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid outsdoorsman who enjoyed gardening and making homemade soups. In his earlier years he obtained his private pilot’s license and was a member of the small aircraft pilots’ group in Eveleth.

Survivors include his son, Jeff (Susan) Anzelc, of Embarrass; daughters, Monica Anzelc of Virginia and Chris Anzelc of Virginia; and a sister, Fran Ahern, of San Francisco, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Martin, Tony, Frank, John and Joseph; and sisters, Mary and Ann.

Rose A. Nagolski
Rose A. Nagolski, 93, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. today at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. Msgr. Aleksander Suchan will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Casketbearers will be Paul Petrich, Michael Petrich, David Petrich, Peter Petrich, Tyler Petrich and Joe Petrich. Interment will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Rose A. Nagolski, 93, of Eveleth, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth.

She was born on Sept. 20, 1911, in Eveleth to Joseph and Theresa (Markovic) O’Koren. She graduated from Eveleth High School in 1929 and was married to Leo Nagolski on Nov. 23, 1940, in Eveleth. She had worked for Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory and was a homemaker. She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, the National Catholic Society of Foresters and a member of the former Holy Family Church Guild. She was an avid bridge player and loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Louis) Petrich of Eveleth; her son, Richard (Linda) Nagolski of Forest Lake, Minn.; grandsons, Paul (Bridget), Michael (Natalie), David (Kari) and Peter; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Nickolas, Savannah, Zachary, Kaitlyn, Nora and Alicia; sisters, Josephine Kordish of Eveleth, Marie O’Koren of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Leonard O’Koren of St. Cloud, Minn.; brother-in-law, Chester Nagolski of Big Lake, Minn.; numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo in 1979; brothers, Joseph and Stanley O’Koren; sister, Amelia Mackulin, and her parents.

Joseph L. Zakovich
Joseph L. Zakovich, 96, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service Chapel in Chisholm, with Fr. Jon Wild of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home. Private interment will be at Chisholm Cemetery.

Joseph L. Zakovich, 96, of Chisholm died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at his residence.

He was born June 5, 1908, in Biwabik to John and Anna (Meznar) Zakovich. He was a 1926 graduate of Biwabik High School and had been a Chisholm resident since 1938. Joe was united in marriage on Nov. 27, 1934, in Duluth to Angeline E. Pusovich. He retired in 1973 as a welder from M.A. Hanna Mining Company after 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the KSKJ Lodge, both of Chisholm.

Survivors include his son, Richard L. (Collette) Zakovich of Chisholm; brother, John Zakovich of Biwabik; sister, Mary E. Peterson of Arvada, Colo.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Angeline E. on Feb. 25, 1998.

Jessie Marie Woods
Jessie Marie Woods, 93, SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Nathan Sager will officiate. Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred. Jessie Marie Woods, 93, of Virginia, died Sunday, March 27, 2005, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 6, 1911, in Virginia, to John I. and Marie (Askegaard) Westby. Jessie was a graduate of Virginia High School class of 1929 and a graduate of St. Luke's School of Nursing class of 1932. She married Manley Woods on June 22, 1936, at the family farm near Sand Lake in Britt and was a lifelong resident of the Virginia area.

Jessie was employed as a private duty nurse in Oklahoma and in the local area; and was a homemaker. She was an active, 60-year member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church, its Naomi Circle and serving on the Altar Guild; a member of the Virginia Historical Society; and a 25-year member of the Sons of Norway Haarfager Lodge 40. Jessie collected silver spoons and salt and pepper shakers; loved to bake and cook; and especially cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jessie is survived by her children, Roger Woods of Britt, Kathryn (Gary) DeBruzzi of New Brighton, John of Culver, Gerald (Cindy) Woods of Britt and Susan White of Vista, Calif.; grandchildren, Eric, Eron, and Elana Woods, Michael (Shanna) DeBruzzi, Cheryl (Tom) Vidmar, Dan (Celeste) DeBruzzi, Debra and Lisa DeBruzzi, Michael (Deniese) Woods, Laurie (Mark) Pinther, Jenny Woods, and Melinda (Dave) Vaughn; great-grandchildren, Dillon, Justina, Sonya, Amanda, Tony, and Alisha DeBruzzi, Tom, Nick, and Noah Vidmar, Morgan Woods, and Austin Vaughn; brother, John (Lucille) Westby of Britt; sister, Jean Stickney of Gilbert; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Manley, in 1988; sisters, Dorothy Vanne, Margaret Johnson, Arline Norlander, and Gudrun Backlund; and brothers, Ray Westby, and Roy Westby in infancy.

Elizabeth A. Hanka
Elizabeth A. Hanka, 82, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower, with the Rev. Rudolph Pakiz as celebrant. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and will continue for one hour prior to service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Embarrass Cemetery.

Elizabeth A. Hanka, 82, of Embarrass died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at the Grandview Christian Nursing Home in Cambridge.

She was born Dec. 14, 1922, to Joseph and Catherine (Hozian) Kaletz in Chicago, Ill., where she grew up and attended Catholic school. Upon finishing high school she worked in a brush factory in Chicago. She married Levi A. Hanka on Nov. 11, 1943, in Chicago. Levi served in the Army during World War II with the 247th Combat Engineers on the Normandy landing in France, and in Belgium. Following the war, he returned to Chicago. After the birth of their first child in 1946, the couple moved to Virginia in 1947. In 1959 they made the move to Embarrass. She and Levi owned and operated the Hanka Manufacturing Co., manufacturing sauna stoves and engine block heaters. She was Levi’s partner and helpmate for 56 years of marriage. In 2001 Elizabeth moved to the Anoka/Andover area. Elizabeth was a busy lady all her life, taking care of her family. She enjoyed embroidery, working crosswords, bingo, playing Yahtzee with Levi and at 6 a.m. every morning working in the yard cleaning up.

Survivors include her son, Steve (Holly) Hanka, of Minneapolis; two daughters, Carol Harju of Andover and Roxanne (Stan) Reed of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Theresa (Robert) Holmes of Liberty, Mo., Denise (Tony) Heckenlaible of East Bethel, Minn., Laura (Kevin) Lamson of Oak Grove, Minn., Dana Reed and Kate Fuller of Minneapolis, Sara Reed of Minneapolis, Katie Reed of Virginia and Allison Hanka of Minneapolis; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann, Catherine and Brian Holmes and Erik Reed; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren expected in July, August and September; a sister, Rose (John) Schenck,of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi, in August 2000; siblings, Katie Kaletz, Ann Rizzo, Mary Kramer and Steve Kaletz; and a niece, Mary Kummer.

Ronald W. Preston
Ronald W. Preston, 44, SERVICES: Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at the Cotton Community Church, 7566 Arkola Road in Cotton with Pastor Justin Arych officiating.

Ronald W. Preston, 44, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Cotton, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2005 in Tampa, the victim of a homicide.

He was born Feb. 9, 1961, in Duluth to John and Lola (Lampinen) Preston.

Ronald is survived by his mother, Lola Raad of Biwabik; father, John (Betty) Preston of Duluth; half brother, John Torgerson; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kathryn L. (Ethier) Radaich
Kathryn L. (Ethier) Radaich, 82, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Clem Gustin O.S.C. will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass Thursday at the church. Honorary pallbearers are: Errol Hietala, Fred Saccoman, Mike Gandsey, Jason Miles, Keith Anderson, and David Anderson. Inurnment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.

Kathryn L. Radaich of Virginia, formerly of Hibbing, died March 20, 2005, at the Virginia Convalescent Center. She was the young age of 82.

Kay was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Gothenberg, Neb., to Ed and Ida (Freeze) Sanders. Kay was born in the Pony Express Station. She worked for many years at the I.S.D. 701 as a food service worker. She married Allen D. Ethier in 1946; they made their home in Hibbing. Allen died in 1961. Kay later married John Radaich in 1973. John later passed away. She enjoyed frog collecting, rummage sales, garage sales, and was a devoted lover of chocolate.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta (Tony) Strgar of Pinehaven, Wyo., and Leaette (Wayne) Frost of Gilbert; son, Dennis Ethier of Gilbert; two grandsons, Jeff (Becky) Strgar of Afton, Wyo., and Jason (Marla) Strgar of Gillette, Wyo.; granddaughter, Kristina Frost of Gilbert; two great-grandchildren, Bethany and Joshua Strgar of Afton, Wyo.; two brothers, Bill (Patricia) Sanders of Moxee City, Wash., and Jim (Sherrie) Sanders of Wabasha, Minn.; sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Sanders of Deport City, Ore.; one very special niece, Mary L. Booth of Two Harbors, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Allen and John; daughter, Claudette in 2001; brother, Eddie Sanders; sister, Liz Schultz; and her parents.

Candace Jean Mishler
Candace “Candy” Jean Mishler passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at her home in Sandstone at the age of 38 years. She was born on April 30, 1974 in Two Harbors to Wayne Clifford and Elaine Della (Hills) Mishler. Candy lived at home with her parents until 2005 when she moved to the CIP group home in Sandstone where she has since resided. She participated in many activities in the Duluth area: DAC (Day Activity Center), Lincoln Elementary Special Education and Duluth East High School Special Education. She enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, camping, walks, music and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elaine Della Mishler; her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Lydia Mishler; her maternal grandparents, Norman and Margel Hills and her maternal uncles, Michael Hills and Harold Hills.

She is survived by her father, Wayne Mishler; two sisters, Kathleen Kurkiewicz (Walter) and her children Joshua, Christopher and Rebecca and Barbara Mishler Ankarlo (Robert) and her children Wayne and Benedict; her uncle, Donald (Marlene) Mishler; many cousins and other aunts and uncles.

Funeral services for Candy Mishler were held Monday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. at Methven Funeral Home in Sandstone with Pastor Tim Schmidt officiating. Organist was Katie Cundiff. Casketbearers were Joshua Kurkiewicz, Robert Ankarlo, Christopher Kurkiewicz, Tom Matson, Walter Kurkiewicz and Claren Reitsma. Honorary Casketbearers were Benedict Ankarlo, Wayne Ankarlo, Rebecca Kurkiewicz and Ann Wedde. Interment at Bohemian Cemetery in Haugen, Wis.

Larry M. Swan
Larry M. Swan, 75, of Two Harbors, died on Sept. 13 at his home.

He was born on March 13, 1937, to Manley and Agnes (Listurd) Swan in Braham, Minn. He grew up with his mother and step-father, Leslie Havlick, in Braham where he attended schools. Larry then joined the Air Force, serving in Seoul, South Korea during the Korean War. He met Glenna Berry in New Hampshire and they were married on Feb. 2, 1960. Larry and Glenna moved to Minnesota in 1970 where he worked for ABEX Fiberglass in Two Harbors and North Star Steel in Duluth, retiring in 1994.

Larry loved fishing, hunting, bowling, and snowmobiling.

He is preceded in death by his father; step-father; mother; and sister, Sharon.

Larry is survived by wife Glenna; children, Cheryl Swan, Michael (Jackie) Swan, Leslie (Brad) Detlefsen, Pamela (Joel) Coolidge, and Heidi (Terry) Middleton; grandchildren Shawn, Megan, Tyler, Kylie, Skye, Jesse, Tana, and Andrew; brother Al (Jackie) Havlick; nephews Cody and Ian Havlick; and many cousins.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. memorial service on Wed., Sept. 19, 2012, at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors.

Reuben Kirsch
Reuben Kirsch, 83, Two Harbors, died suddenly Sept. 25, in Lake View Memorial Hospital

Visitation from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m service which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Dorthea Ann Pederson
Dorthea Ann Pederson, 84, of Silver Bay, Minn., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Duluth. She was born in Blackduck, Minn., on August 27, 1928, to Herbert and Meta Lindquist. She married Erling Pederson on September 23, 1950, and they raised their family in Silver Bay. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Dorthea is survived by her children Steven (Kathy) of Winona, Scott (Sue) of Pequot Lakes, Jean (Steve ) Johnson of Windom, Joan (Jeff) Holter of Proctor, and Mark (Rachel) of Elk River; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat., September 29, with a visitation one hour prior at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay, Minn.

Arlene S. (Brabec) Kane
Arlene S. (Brabec) Kane, 81, of Silver Bay, died Tuesday, Sept.18, at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. She was born on Nov. 17, 1930, to William and Libby (Janovsky) Brabec in Moose Lake, Minn. Arlene grew up on the family farm in Denham, where she helped out on the dairy farm.

She traveled with her husband during his military career and lived in Japan. She moved to Silver Bay in 1955. Arlene was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening, dancing polkas, crocheting, fishing, cooking, and baking. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Edmund.

Arlene is survived by her children; Mark (Roxanne) Kane of Poulsbo, WA, and Karen (Charles) Erickson of Proctor; grandchildren, Kelsey Kane, Charles (Jenna) Erickson, Kelly (Joe) Bennett, and Brian (Gay) Melde; great grandchildren, Madison and Libby Bennett, and Bailey Melde; and sister-in-law, Pat Misukanis.

The family would like to thank the staff of Chris Jensen and Essentia Hospice, especially Arlene's nurse Sharyn, for their loving care and support.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, October 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Burial will follow at Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery.

Nancy Sullivan
Nancy Sullivan was born in Two Harbors, Minn., Sept. 8, 1941, the fifth of seven children and died Sept. 13 from ovarian cancer.

She graduated from Two Harbors High School, attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., and received her bachelor's degree in Health Information Management. After working in Milwaukee for 10 years, Nancy moved to Seattle, Wash., to begin a wonderful 34-year career in the cancer surveillance system at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She formed many close and supportive friendships at Fred Hutch.

Nancy lived simply so that others could simply live. She was a woman of deep faith and served very actively in her church. Nancy made this real by walking in the footsteps of Christ and serving others, especially the poor. She treated the earth with great reverence, always recycling and avoiding pollution.

Nancy enjoyed family and friends, walking, cooking and theater.

Preceding her in death were her mother and father Harold and Angela Sullivan and brother Daniel. Nancy is survived by brothers Thomas Sullivan of Two Harbors and Patrick (Dianne) Sullivan of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; sisters Joan (David) Dobbs of Denver, Colo., Rosemary (David) Myers of Amery, Wis., and Kathleen (Robert) Hitchcock of University Place, Wash.; 14 nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held for Nancy at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Our Lady of the Lake in Seattle. The mass will be preceded by the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by a luncheon at 12 p.m.

Spring interment will be in Two Harbors, Minn. The family wishes to thank Dr. Drescher, Swedish Hospital and Franciscan Hospice House in Tacoma for their wonderful care of Nancy. Following Nancy's wishes, memorial contributions should be sent to Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research, 1221 Madison St., Suite 1401, Seattle Wash., 98104.
