Margaret "Margie" Mary Pluth
Margie Pluth, 82, of Two Harbors, Minn., passed away Monday, Sept 17, in Ecumen Scenic Shores, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York to Margaret (Sweeney) and Patrick Donnellan. She married Rudolph “Rudy” Pluth on April 23, 1950, in Brooklyn and relocated to her husband’s native Minnesota in 1951. They eventually made their home in Two Harbors in 1961.

Margie was an avid gardener, and enjoyed fishing, travelling, and time spent with her family and friends. She was most recently employed at Irresistible Ink in Two Harbors. An active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, she was also very committed to her community, participating in Women’s Jaycees, the Two Harbors Curling Club, and the American Cancer Society.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, and two infant siblings.

She is survived by her husband, Rudy; three daughters, Meg Pluth of Oakdale, Minn., Theresa (Charles) Yeo of Penny Valley, Pa, and Frances (Brian) Mueller of St. Charles, Minn; three sisters, Patricia Kosten of Belvidere, N.J., Eileen Kelly of New York, N.Y., and Kathleen (George) Garber of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Morton (Terry) Donnellan of Brooklyn and Gerard (Suzanne) Donnellan of Lexington, Mass.; four grandchildren, William and Katerina Yeo, Bennett and Johanna Mueller; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4-8 PM Friday, September 21 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Mark Mensing
Mark Mensing, 52, of Silver Bay went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

He was born on March 30, 196,0 to William and Yvonne (Bartz) Mensing in Two Harbors. Mark grew up in Silver Bay and was a graduate of William Kelley High School in 1978. He was employed as a logger and over the road truck driver for 24 years. In 2000, he started Mark's Small Engine Repair in Silver Bay, where he worked until his death.

Mark enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, and gardening.

He is preceded in death by his father, Bill and brother, Scott.

Mark is survived by his mother, Yvonne Mensing (Werner Talus) of Silver Bay; his significant other, Phyllis Welstad and her son Matt of Silver Bay; siblings Michele (Wayne) Fenstad of Silver Bay, Todd Mensing of Blaine, and Kristin Kay (Rod) Ridgewell of Duluth; daughter Krystal Hatchett; son, Brett Mensing of Silver Bay; granddaughter, Reese Hatchett, and many nieces and nephews.

Mark's family would like to thank the staff of St. Luke's ICU for their great care.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. Memorial Service on Monday, September 24, at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay.

Larralee S. Pratt
Larralee S. Pratt, age 55, of Fairborn, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Sept. 23.

She was born March 17, 1957, in Morgantown, W. Va., the daughter of Larry Jack and Betty Gloria (Guiler) Malcomb.

Larralee was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Cass; a son, Cass Patrick Pratt, II; her mother of Fairborn; four step-sons, Benjamin Ryan Pratt, Clayton Andrew (Jenette) Pratt, James Marshall (Jill) Pratt, Joseph John Pratt, all of Minnesota; six step-grandchildren, Talon, Tatum, Emily, Kellin, Parker, Peyton; and two sisters, Candy (Joe) Clifford of Tennessee and Jackie (Tom) Curran of Georgia.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. in the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 East Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn, Deacon Max Roadruck officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

CWS U.S. Army Ret. Vilas John Kolberg (Butch)
CWS U.S. Army Ret. Vilas John Kolberg (Butch), reported for duty to his

Commander-in- Chief in heaven in the pre dawn hours of Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012.

He was surrounded by his beloved Kolberg Klan.

Butch, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Appleton, Wisc., on June 27, 1936 to Ernest and Augusta (Malessa) Kolberg of Appleton. He joined the military on June 29, 1952, and retired with honors on June 30, 1973. While in the military, he earned an Associates Degree and achieved the rank of CW3 USA. Butch received several medals, badges and citations - the highest being the Bronze Star as a member of the 82nd Airborne Unit and 7th Special Forces in Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Butch was diagnosed with lung cancer on Mar. 16, 2012, linked to Agent Orange exposure during his tours served in Korea and Viet Nam.

Upon retiring, the Kolberg family moved to Two Harbors, Minn., where Butch worked at Reserve Mining in Silver Bay, Minn., for 10 years and then for the City of Two Harbors, as manager of the Lakeview National Golf Clubhouse and the Burlington Bay Campground.

On Oct. 8, 1955 while stationed at Ft. Carson, Colo., he met Elsie Saaristo Kolberg. They were married in Raton, N.M., and would have celebrated 57 years of togetherness on Oct. 8, 2012. Their union presented the world with “The Kolberg Kids” beginning on Mar. 29 , 1958 with Jolynn Detlefsen(Michael) followed by Nancy Flynn (Tim) on May 1, 1959, Wendy Aro (Dave) on Aug. 9, 1960, and Theodore Kolberg (Jeanne)on Nov. 23, 1961. Grandchildren arrived with Sylas (Tina) Walker on July 6, 1980, Clayton, Brittany (Billy), Anna Detlefsen, Dustin (Amy )Aro, Christopher Aro, Kelsie (Jim) Karna, Sarah and Nicholas Flynn, with Conner and Evan Kolberg, as the finale.

Great-grand- children are Alden Beck, David Puent, Emma and Olivia Walker, Liam Karna, and Layten and Gabrielle Burhans.

Butch was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the VFW, the American Legion, the Minnesota Disabled Veterans group, Fortitude Lodge, Emera Chapter of Two Harbors and the Retired Officers Association.

He loved golf, bowling and in his earlier years’ boxing and men’s softball-- where he took several awards in each sport. Hunting was Butch’s passion throughout life. His shelf of trophies and deer racks marked his skill (and competitive nature).

Butch was preceded in death by an infant son Tim, his parents, his mother and father-in-law, Edwin and Edna Saaristo, his brother Merlin Kolberg and son-in-law, Tim Flynn. He is survived by his loving wife Elsie Eleanor, his children and their families, four brothers and four sisters.

A graveside family service was held on Wednesday complete with military Honor Guard at the Lakeview Cemetery. Butch’s celebration of life for family and friends will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Grace Baptist Church with a luncheon following the service at the Lakeview National Golf Course from 1-3 p.m.

Marcella "Sally" Alborn
Sally Alborn, 87, of Silver Bay, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 25, in Viewcrest Health Center, Duluth.

She was born on June 16, 1925, to Jacob and Hilda (Fletchner) Gifford in Burt, Iowa, where she grew up and attended schools.

Sally married Frank Alborn in 1943, and they moved to Silver Bay in

1954. She was self-employed as a hair-dresser for many years. She was

a member of Faith Lutheran Church, and the Ladies Guild, the VFW Auxiliary and the Silver Bay Golden Agers.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, entertaining, sewing, camping, fishing,

garage sales and playing games with her grand- children.

Her family and grandchildren were very important to her.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank;

sisters, Peggy, Jean, Martha, Dorothy, Geneva, Lila, and Beulah; grandson, Kermit Mattson, and a great-granddaughter Hadley Ava Anderson.

She is survived by a son, Lon of Silver Bay and his sons, Brent (Danielle) Alborn and children Queana, Morgan, Westley, and Noah, and Brian and Joel Hare, Logan and Clayton Alborn; daughter, Susan (Tom) Gearin of Forest Lake and children, Angela (Brian) Johnson and children Ashley and Carson, Melissa (Mark) Anderson and children, Madeline, Marcus and McKinley, Molly Gearin and her son Logan, and Jacob (Kayla) Gearin; daughter, Diane (Marty)

Mattson of Silver Bay and their children, Matthew Mattson and his children Autumn and Dusty, Chelsey Mattson (Justin Gilbertson) and children Austin and Carter, and Trent Mattson and his child Winnie; a brother, Bernard Gifford of Burt, Iowa; sisters, Joan Gifford of Burt, and Sherry Schmidt of West Bend, Iowa.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1 at Faith Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Silver Bay Cemetery.

Reuben Kirsch
Reuben Kirsch, 83, died unexpectedly at home on Sept, 25, 2012, and quietly took the place prepared for him in the loving arms of God.

Our beloved husband, father and grandfather was born on Nov. 26, 1928, to Erwin and Lenore (Poppler) Kirsch in Victoria, Minn., As a young man, he was trained as a carpenter by his father, and later served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Lorraine Olson, and together they moved to the Two Harbors area in 1957, where they raised their family.

He was employed at Reserve Mining Company for 29 years, and at Lutheran Social Service for 19 years, where he maintained their facilities with his wide and varied talents.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking and being in the outdoors. But mostly he loved spending time with his grandchildren, in whom he took the greatest pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia, brothers Earl, Larry and David, infant siblings Lowell and Richard, and grandson, Nathan. Our precious dad will be honored and cherished forever in the hearts of his wife, Lorraine; his son, Steven (Janelle) Kirsch of Kasson, Minn.; his daughters, Peg (Dave) Lee of Duluth, Minn.; Beverly (Doug) Hinton Jaeger of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; and Karen, (Tom) Andersen of Duluth, Minn.; grandchildren Phillip, Janae, Gretel, Elsa, Elias, Grace, Levi, Cosette, Montana, Jordan, Emily, and Nicholas; also a sister, LaJune (John) Dobbs; and brothers Glen (Shirley), Jerry (Irene) and Bob.

Ardell L. Grandlund
Ardell Granlund, 86, Silver Bay, died Friday, Jan. 11, at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center of heart failure.

He was born February 26, 1926, to Arthur and Kate (Smith) on a farm near Milnor, N.D., graduated from Milnor High School, then served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After the war he attended North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, earning a master electrician’s degree. He worked as an electrician in Montana and North Dakota for several years and returned to the Navy during the Korean War. He and Lorine Weickum were married on June 1, 1950, and they made their home in Silver Bay since 1956. Ardell was employed as an electrician at Reserve Mining Company for 30 years and was also an electrical inspector for the State of Minnesota for many years.

He was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed volunteering his service to help people with projects in their homes as well as gardening and planting trees.

Ardell was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lorine in 2004, a son-in-law Jim Janzen; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorraine and Jerry Johnson and Mary Ann and Herbert Bakers.

Ardell is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Thomas) Peters of Two Harbors, Beverly (Douglas) Ball of Glencoe, Minn., Cindy (William) Brown of Silver Bay, and Diane Janzen of Beaver Bay; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held 10:30 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. service on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery.

William E. “Bill” Koski
William E. “Bill” Koski, 90, of Two Harbors died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at home.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1922, to Hjalmer and Rosa (Silander) Koski in Kinney, Minn. Bill graduated from Buhl High School and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He married Mildred Garson in 1948 and worked as an aircraft mechanic for North East Airways in Eveleth until 1959. Bill and Mildred moved to Bloomington in 1960, where he was employed at Honeywell International in Flight Operations until retiring in 1985. Since his retirement he has made his home in Two Harbors.

Bill enjoyed fishing and deer hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Veikko, who was killed during WWII at the Battle of the Bulge.

William is survived by wife, Mildred; sons Bill and Bob of Two Harbors; grandson, Ryan (Mandy) of Brooklyn Park; great-grandsons Ashton and Kaleb; and good friend and neighbor Fred Kallio.

Private memorial services will be held.
