William W. Nancarrow
William W. Nancarrow, 89, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing, with the Rev. Jack Harris officiating. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Hibbing, and will continue one hour prior to service Thursday at the church. William W. Nancarrow, 89, a longtime resident of Hibbing, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006.

He was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Eveleth, the son of William E. and Hilma (Johnson) Nancarrow. He graduated from Eveleth High School and went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial education from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, and another master’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He was married to Dorothy Davidson on March 28, 1942, in Hibbing. An Army veteran, Bill served in the Southeast Asian Theater during World War II. He worked as an industrial arts teacher at Hibbing High School for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and Mesaba Lodge 255 in Hibbing. Bill was an outdoorsman who loved spending summers at their cabin on Lake Vermilion.

Bill is survived by two daughters, Jean Nancarrow Ogden of Rochester, Minn., and Margaret Nancarrow Lawrence of Edina, Minn.; his son, William D. (Sharon) Nancarrow of Coon Rapids, Minn.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, in 1999; and his sister, Marjorie.

Elsie Marietta Ziwisky
Elsie Marietta Ziwisky, 89, SERVICES: Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Buhl, with the Rev. Kristin Foster officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday at Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Chisholm and will continue for one hour prior to service Tuesday at the church. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church of Buhl. Elsie Marietta Ziwisky, 89, of Sauk Rapids and formerly of Buhl, died Friday, March 3, 2006, at St. Cloud Hospital.

She was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Clayton, Wis., to Mathes and Clara (Bruss) Muschik.

Elsie was united in marriage on Oct. 6, 1934, in Clayton, Wis., to Steve Ziwisky. They were dairy farmers in Clayton until moving to Buhl in 1952. Elsie enjoyed her work first at the bakery and later as a cook at the former Mesabi Nursing Home in Buhl for many years. She remained a member of First Lutheran Church although she later lived in Chisholm and then spent the past few years in Sauk Rapids to be closer to her family. As the only remaining parent and grandparent in her extended family for years, she was a blessing to us all.

Survivors include her children, Joyce Pohl of St. Cloud, Max (Lea) Ziwisky of Princeton, Minn., Patsy Ziwisky of Gurnee, Ill., and Debra (John) Perala of Baudette, Minn.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence (Arcenia) Muschik, of Rice Lake, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Steve, in 1971; and also by two sisters and a brother.

Russell Charles 'Russ' Burton
Russell Charles 'Russ' Burton, 70, SERVICES: A memorial service will be 11 a.m. April 28 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. Contributions can be made to a charity of choice.

Russell Charles “Russ” Burton, 70, of Summerfield, Fla., died Friday, March 3, 2006, at The Villages Regional Hospital at The Villages, Fla.

He was born Dec. 22, 1935, in St. Cloud, Minn., to Russell C. Burton and Careyl A. LeDoux. A Roman Catholic, he married Karen M., his best friend and wife for 29 years, at the Sand Lake Chapel on Dec. 9, 1976. He was a highway engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 38 years. He graduated from Little Falls High School in Little Falls, Minn., in 1953. He attended the Minnesota School of Art. He formerly lived on Lake Vermilion in Tower. He was a veteran of the Minnesota Army National Guard. His memberships included: Knights of Columbus, the National Rifle Association, Virginia Rifle and Pistol Club, Moose Lodge, National Bowling Association, Lake Vermilion Sportsmen Club and Ducks Unlimited. His hobbies included fishing, duck hunting at the Northwest Angle, deer hunting, wood carving, golf (he made his own golf clubs), painting, home remodeling, reading history, along with a love for travel and adventure.

He had a great love of the outdoors and especially Lake Vermilion, where he built a home on the lakeshore. He was greatly loved by all who met him, as he was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was deeply loved and respected and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Karen, of Summerfield, Fla.; a son, Jeffrey (Stacy) Burton of Blaine, Minn.; daughters, Michelle and Melanie Burton, both of Virginia, Robin (Dan) Koponen of Embarrass; step-son, U.S. Air Force Major Todd (Beth) Manninen of Eveleth; step-daughter, U.S. Navy Chief Tasha (husband Petty Officer 1st Class Eric) Ratliff of Chula Vista, Calif.; a brother, Gail (Leona) Burton of Little Falls; a sister, Dianne (Tom) Roberts of Eveleth; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, niece Kristie Burton, nephew Erik Marwick, son-in-law Rick Lundstrom, brother-in-law Lindsey Marwick.

Priscilla J. Robich
Priscilla J. Robich, 75, SERVICES: Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Range Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeffrey Jones will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Priscilla J. Robich, 75, of Eveleth, beloved mother and grandmother, died March 4, 2006 at St. Luke’s Medical Center.

She was born on July 8, 1930, to Robert J. and Elvera C. (Wickstrom) Moberg in Cotton, where she grew up and attended school. She was married on June 18, 1958, to Victor A. Robich in Eveleth. She worked at the Wilbert Cafe and Cluett Peabody Shirt Factory. She was a self-employed upholsterer and was a secretary for Hall Equipment of Virginia. She owned Percy’s Sportswear in Virginia and retired from Eveleth Taconite. She was a former member of the Resurrection Catholic Church and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. Priscilla loved to garden, bake, do crafts and read.

Survivors include three children, Victor (Darcy) Robich of Virginia, Theresa (Thomas) Crandall of Richfield, Minn., Michael (Lynette) Robich of Boise, Idaho; daughter-in-law, JoAnne Robich of Cotton; 13 grandchildren, Nicole, Kristina, Carrie, Jennifer, Rebecca, Hunter, Amanda, Priscilla, Sara, Thomas, Karl, James and Shannon; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger (Doris) Moberg of Aurora, Donald (Nancy) Moberg of Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Mary Robich of Schaumburg, Ill.,, and Margaret Gornik of Eveleth; several nieces, nephews and other relations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor A.; son, John H.; and brother, Robert Moberg.

Valentine Pesavento Jr.
Valentine Pesavento Jr., 69, SERVICES: A private family gathering was held in the home to celebrate his life and a memorial will be held at a date in the spring yet to be set.

Valentine Pesavento Jr., 69, of Embarrass, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, March 2, 2006. He died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born Sept. 12, 1936, in Ironwood, Mich., the son of Valentine Sr. and Mona Pesavento. He graduated from high school in Ironwood and went on to serve proudly in the U.S. Army for three years. He worked for 30 years at LTV Steel in Hoyt Lakes and was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved to spend time in the outdoors with his sons and grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; three sons, Raymond (Kim) of Pike Township, Daniel (Kristi) of Walker, Minn., Paul (Elizabeth) of Hutchinson, Minn.; one grandson and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Valentine Sr. and Mona Pesavento; and in-laws, Rauha and Vern Ylitalo.

Lola I. Grant
Lola I. Grant, 99, SERVICES: Funeral Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Jeffrey Jones will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Alango Cemetery in the spring.

Lola I. Grant, 99, of Hibbing, formerly of Alango, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at the Golden Crest Healthcare Center.

She was born Nov. 14, 1906, to Herman and Maria Kristina (Niemala) Makela in Chisholm. She grew up in the Chisholm and Alango areas. She worked as a beautician before moving to New York City where she worked as a cook for a doctor. She was united in marriage to Otto Grant; they lived in New York for several years before retiring to the Makela family farm in Alango.

Survivors include three nieces, Patricia (Victor) Emanuel of Keewatin, Candace Presley of Washington state, Nancy (Hugh) Steffey of Flagstaff, Ariz.; several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; sisters, Saima Ylatupa and Jennie Neale; brothers, William and Raymond Makela.

Russell T. Jarvi
Russell T. Jarvi, 81, SERVICES: A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday at the Range Funeral Home.

Russell T. Jarvi, 81, of Makinen, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the Cornerstone Villa in Buhl.

He was born on July 30, 1924, to Peter and Tyne (Saviniemi) Jarvi in Sandy Township where he grew up and attended school. Following his schooling, he was employed as a woodsman in the logging industry and also in the mining industry and forestry industry, retiring in 1988.

Survivors include three sons, Russell (Betty) Jarvi, Jr. of Makinen, John Jarvi of Aurora, James (Elaine) Jarvi of Makinen; two daughters, Carol (Roy) Johnson of Makinen, Linda (Fred) LeMoyne of Babbitt; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Aune King of Warba, and Esther Talbot of Tuyallup, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and four sisters.

Ronald E. Larsen
Ronald E. Larsen, 68, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with Pastor Nathan Sager officiating.

Ronald E. Larsen, 68, of Rosemount, Minn., died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, with his family by his side.

He was born Sept. 25, 1937. He was an Edina, Minn., elementary school teacher for 30 years. He was a part-time bartender at Al’s Bar in St. Louis Park, Minn. He was an active member of the Apple Valley American Legion. He was an engineer and conductor for the Erie Mining Railroad in his younger years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Patricia; a son, Joseph David (Nancy) Larsen; a sister, Catherine Maki; a niece, Dawn Marie; nephews, Michael, Brett and Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett E. Larsen and Dorothy Edgar Larsen.

Margaret D. Kobe
Margaret D. Kobe, 95, SERVICES: Funeral Mass for Margaret D. Kobe will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert, with Father Joel Hastings the celebrant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour prior to the Mass at church. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery.

Margaret D. Kobe, 95, of Gilbert, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at St. Michael’s Health Care Center in Virginia, following a brief illness.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1910, in Gilbert, to Florian and Margaret Hoffner. Education was extremely important to her. She graduated from Gilbert High School, earned a two-year teaching certificate from Winona State Teacher’s College and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She began her teaching career in Gilbert. She also taught in Sleepy Eye, Chisholm and McKinley. During World War II, she worked for the FBI in Washington D.C. She retired from the Nell Shean Elementary School in Gilbert in 1976.

On July 27, 1942, she married George Kobe. When George returned from serving in WWII, they made their home in Gilbert, where they owned and operated Kobe’s Grocery Store. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Gilbert, the George and Mark Klobuchar VFW Auxiliary of Gilbert, Gilbert Senior Citizens and the Minnesota Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include a son, George (Carol Bowman) of Aurora; three daughters, Peggy (Terry) Meyers of Mantorville, Minn., Kathy (John) Bovitz of Hibbing, and Betsy (Dusty) Miller of Toronto, Canada; eight grandchildren, Mark Meyers, Holly Rene, Nick Meyers, Kara Prijatel, Lisa Bovitz, Meagan Bovitz, Ashley Miller and Joanna Miller; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Veranth of Virginia and Florence Veranth of St. Louis, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Feb. 16, 1989.

Richard C. Cundy
Richard C. Cundy, 83, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Range Funeral Home. Rev. Brad Felix will officate. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Richard C. Cundy, 83, of Virginia died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at his residence.

Richard was born on March 26, 1922, to Matthew and Ruth (Watts) Cundy in Biwabik where he grew up and attended school. He also attended Virginia Jr. College. Richard was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corp. In 1950 he was united in marriage to Alberta Katherine Larson in Waukegan, Ill. Following marriage they made their home in Virginia. He was a carpenter working for the construction industry and was a member of Carpenter Local #606 of Virginia and served on the Union Executive Board.

Survivors include: four sons, James (Jill) Cundy of Aurora, John (Jan) Cundy of White Bear Lake, Tom (Laurie) Cundy of Eveleth and Steven Cundy of South San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Jill (Frank) Kawalczyk of Buffalo, Minn.; and five grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta; his parents; and brother, Matt.

Sandra Moraski
Sandra Moraski, 66, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tower. The Rev. Rudolph Pakiz will be celebrant. Spring burial will be at the Lakeview Cemetery, Tower. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the Vermilion Funeral Home Chapel in Tower, with rosary at 6:30 p.m. Family services provided by Bauman’s Vermilion Funeral Home, Tower. Sandra A. “Sandy” Moraski, 66, of Tower passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born on April 13, 1939, the daughter of Matt and Doris (Axelson) Vaida. Sandy attended the Tower-Soudan High School class of 1957. She received training at St. Mary’s Medical Center to be an x-ray technician. On June 23, 1962, she married James Anthony Moraski in Tower at St. Martin’s Catholic Church. They were the second couple to be married in the new church. Sandy worked as an x-ray technician in Ely at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital, in Texas and St. Paul. She also worked as a teacher’s aid in Babbitt. She was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church circle, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary to Post 9702 in Aurora. Sandy lived for her husband, children, grandchildren, and sisters. She will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; daughters, Melissa (Michael) Barron of Baxter and Pamela Moraski of Tower; grandchildren, Zachary, Karly and James; sisters, Suzanne (John) Leibel of Maplewood, Minn., Doris Vaida of San Raefel, Calif., and Maryann (Troy) Long of Lakewood, Colo.; best friend, Gayle Lilya of Midway; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of friends.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents.

Dale Alan Jacobson
Dale Alan Jacobson, 45, SERVICES: Funeral at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Akeley, Minn. Visitation for one hour before the service. Officiant will be the Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen. Carol Gall will be the organist, and Dave Fish will sing “In the Garden.’’ A lunch reception will be held in the church fellowship hall after the service. A remembrance gathering will be held at the Coates Plaza Hotel in Virginia from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15. Burial will be in the spring in the Akeley City Cemetery. Cease Family Funeral Home of Nevis, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.

Dale Alan Jacobson, 45, of Grand Forks, N.D., formerly of Virginia and Eveleth, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

He was born May 26, 1960, in Fort Mead, Md., the son of Keith and Maurine (Boettcher) Jacobson. He grew up in the Virginia/Eveleth area and graduated from high school in 1978. He went on to work for Power of Peat, harvesting peat moss as an alternative energy source. He became disabled and was unable to work fulltime. He continued to live in the Virginia/Eveleth area. In November of 2005 he moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where he had resided since. Dale enjoyed hunting, watching World War II movies and reading American Western novels.

He is survived by his sister, Jackie (Rodney) Bliss of Leavenworth, Kan.; his brother, Charles Jacobson of Virginia; one niece, two nephews, a great-niece, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, and his lifelong friend and companion, Dawn Bauer, and extended family children, Mercedes, Sally, Everett, Chris and Rebecca Bauer, all of Grand Forks.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
