Jane Violet Simonson
Jane Violet Simonson, 90, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl. The Rev. Jon Wild will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with parish prayers at 7 p.m., and continue for one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Buhl.

Jane Violet Simonson, 90, of Buhl, died Sunday, March 12, 2006, at the Fairview University Medical Center in Hibbing.

She was born Jan. 27, 1916, to Walter and Josephine (Klocek) Petroskey in Virginia. She was raised in Virginia and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1934. Jane worked at the Maco Theater, and at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Virginia and San Francisco, Calif. She also worked for 12 years at Herberger’s in Virginia. Jane was a member of St. Mary’s and St. Bernadette’s Circles at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Buhl, as well as a longtime member of the prayer chain and the church choir.

Jane was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Despite her long-term illness, she had a strong faith in God and was kind to all she met.

She is survived by daughters, Phyliss Flannery of Hibbing, Barbara Simonson of Montevideo, Minn., and Jean (Donald) Koepke of Medina, Ohio; grandchildren, Heather (Jason) Giese of Appleton, Minn., Caroline Koepke of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Kelly (Christopher) Carpenter of Haslett, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Madeline and William Giese of Appleton, Minn.; brother, Leonard (Dorothy) Petroskey of Virginia; sister, Felicia Matkovich of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; parents; and brothers, Stanley, Edward, John, and Bernard Petroskey.

Eleanore L. Watt
Eleanore L. Watt, 87, SERVICES: Memorial service 6 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Brenda King officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Virginia Servicemen’s Honor Guard. Arrangements provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia. Eleanore L. Watt, 87, of Virginia died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at her home.

She was born Dec. 9, 1918, in St. Paul, the daughter of George and Susan (Bunker) Buethe. Eleanore grew up in St. Paul, graduated from high school in Northfield, Minn., and went on to attain her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota. She served in the Navy during World War II in the Navy Nurses Corps, stationed in Hawaii. She married Robert F. Watt in June 1947 in Hibbing. The couple lived in Ohio and Hibbing prior to moving to Virginia in 1965. She was employed as a registered nurse at the former Anchor Hospital in Minneapolis; taught nursing at the University of Minnesota; and later worked as a registered nurse at Hibbing General Hospital. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star in Hibbing. She volunteered for the Red Cross, the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts.

She is survived by her children, Bill (Mary) Watt of Waukesha, Wis., Jim Watt of Grand Forks, N.D., and Marianne (Craig) Niemiste of Virginia; grandchildren, Heather and Erik; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Robert, in 1976.

Barbara Ann Forsberg
Barbara Ann Forsberg, 63, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, followed by a short prayer service for family and close friends at White Funeral Home in Lakeville, Minn. No burial service at this time. Memorials should be sent to the Fairview Hospice Fund in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are by White Funeral Home of Lakeville, Minn.

Barbara Ann Forsberg, 63, of Farmington, Minn., was born Sept. 20, 1942, and her spirit departed on Monday, March 13, 2006, to join her brother, Gary Lillesve; mother, Ruth Voxland; and birth father, Leonard Lillesve.

As Barb passed through this Earth, her spirit leaves behind a legacy of artistic marks and through her intuitive ways with horses and people, she leaves her students and family with her wisdom for the ages. Her family thanks her many close friends for their support in this crisis and particularly her “posse” of equestrian fanatics form Valley Oakes Stable for their unwavering support. Her husband wishes to pay respect to the loyalty and compassion her horse “Della” had for her during the past few months.

She is survived by her husband, Dick Forsberg; daughter, “Dee” Forsberg-Voss, and her husband, Dan Voss, and their daughter, “Danee” of Minneapolis; son, Air Force Capt. Gary, and his wife, Rhonda of Tucson, Ariz.; their children, Lauren and Michael Forsberg of Cedar Falls, Iowa; her father, Rudy Voxland of Virginia; and sister, Nancy Eichholz, and her husband, Charles of Tower.

Mickey J. Zallar
Mickey J. Zallar, 68, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cook. The Rev. Larry Antus, OMI will be the celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The casket bearers will be: Ron Nosie, Brad Nosie, David Rent, John Godec, “Slugger” Foss, and Randy Nosie. The honorary bearers will be: Keith Pierson and Arnold Lokken. Burial will be in St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Greaney. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Mickey J. Zallar, 68, of Akeley, Minn., formerly of Rauch, died unexpectedly of natural causes at his residence on Tuesday, March 14, 2006.

Mickey was born on Jan. 10, 1938, in Chisholm, the son of Martin and Katherine “Katie” (Godec) Zallar. He grew up in Rauch, and attended school at Orr. He lived in California for five years, then moved to Hibbing, where he was a painter for Rayco Painting and Decorating. Mickey married Betty Hayward in 1961 in Hibbing, and they were married for more than 30 years. He moved to Minneapolis, where he was a self-employed painting contractor for more than 25 years. He bought the Dream-Away Resort on Lake Beltaine in Nevis in 1992. He has resided at Akeley the past five years. Mickey loved the Black Hills of South Dakota, especially trout fishing and panning for gold there. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed the outdoors, along with motorcycling. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Brooklyn Park Fire Department, and the Park Rapids Collector’s Club. He was civic minded, and sought involvement to better the communities he lived in. Mickey was known for his zest for life, and will be sadly missed, but remembered by the many who knew him.

He is survived by his two sons, Patrick of Nevis, and Daniel of Minneapolis; one daughter, Suzette “Sue” Zallar of St. Michaels, Minn.; the mother of his children, Betty Mason of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two brothers, Richard of Wayzata, Minn., and Butch (Carol) of Silverdale; two sisters, Jody (John) Chovan of International Falls, and Kathy Zallar of Hopkins, Minn.; five grandchildren, Brandon, Brook, Jacob, Jimmy, and Amy; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Martin on April 4, 1989; and mother, Katie on March 17, 1990.

John B. Rioux
John B. Rioux, 71, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church. The Rev. Kristin M. Foster will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Military rites will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5258.

John B. Rioux, 71, of Mountain Iron, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 5, 1934, to Howard and Frances (Edwards) Rioux in Forest Lake, Minn. He grew up and attended school in Baudette. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. On June 14, 1958, he married Eileen Crevier in Baudette. Following marriage, they made their home in Baudette, moving to Barnesville, Minn., in 1970, then to Ham Lake in 1977, and finally to Mountain Iron in 1978. He was employed as an auditor for the Minnesota State Department of Revenue for 20 years until a medical disability caused his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the church men’s club and was the church treasurer. He was a life member of VFW Post No. 5258 and was the post quartermaster. He was on the planning and zoning commission for the City of Mountain Iron and was a Boy Scout leader in Mountain Iron. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, hunter and just enjoyed being in the woods.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen; four children, Elizabeth (Robert) Rodorigo of Anoka, Minn., Van (Linda) Rioux of Iron, Pauline (Jeff) Rioux of Mountain Iron, and Sidney Rioux of Hastings, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Chris, Shaun, Jesse, Ryen, Sheree, Tyler, Kyle, and Ashley; great-grandson, Joseph; one sister, Elvira (John) Eaker of Madison, S.D.; four brothers, Kent (Loretta) Rioux of Baudette, Kerry Rioux of Baudette, Richard (Ada) Rioux of Elk River, Virgil (Elsie) Rioux of Red Lodge, Mont., and Dwight (Pat) Rioux of Missoula, Mont.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dawn and Keith.

Ted M. Sellars
Ted M. Sellars, 66, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Balkan Community Center, 6061 Highway 73, Balkan Township. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Ted M. Sellars, 66, of Balkan Township, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at his home.

He was born Feb. 5, 1940, in Duluth, to Herbert and Gertrude (Cobb) Sellars. Ted was a longtime resident of Hibbing and Balkan Township. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Chisholm American Legion Post No. 247. Ted was employed as a superintendent for Sellars Construction and later as a foreman of Balkan Township. He retired in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy of Balkan Township; children, Kyle Maki of Makinen, Julie (Glen) Vant of Stanchfield, Minn., Ted (Jean) Sellars Jr. of Temecula, Calif., Seth Maki of Chisholm, Liza (Jeremy Donat) Maki of Nashwauk, and Wendy Barlow of St. Paul; grandchildren, Taylor Rupp, Tabitha Rupp, Paige Maki, Samantha Sellars, Stephanie Sellars, Michael Sellars, Christopher Vant, Andrienne Vant, Aaron Barlow, Adam Barlow, and Anna Barlow; three great-grandchildren, Megan, Lynneah, and Aubri; three brothers, Herbert (Mara) Sellars of Britt, James (Mary) Sellars of Hibbing, and John (Sharon) Sellars of Andover, Minn.; one sister, Kathleen (Oren) Bottoms of Hibbing; brother-in-law, Bill Hill of Balkan Township; two sisters-in-law, Diane Pernat of Balkan Township, and Laurie Hill of Balkan Township; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved granddaughter, Tearainy Rupp; and mother-in-law, Jewel Hill.

Walter A. Hanka
Walter A. Hanka, 91, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Biwabik, with the Rev. David Forsman as celebrant. Visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia and continuing for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by George and Mark Klobuchar VFW Post 4456 of Gilbert.

Walter A. Hanka, 91, of Embarrass, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at Interim Vent Care Residence in Duluth.

He was born on April 5, 1914, in Embarrass to Alex and Elizabeth (Saari) Hanka and grew up there. He attended Embarrass School 72, only speaking Finnish when he started.

Walter had six brothers and sisters. Losing his mother when he was 13, he decided to quit school and help his father and he became the chief cook and bottle washer. He baked excellent biscuits and bread and he would get them extra treats by making and selling a little “moonshine.’’

Walter worked for the railroad and as a logger, until he entered the Army on May 4, 1942, serving as a technician 4th class cook with the 34th Cavalry Recon Group in Rome-Arno, the North Appenines and Po Valley, Italy.

Walter was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars and three overseas service bars. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 11, 1945. He was a member of George and Mark Klobuchar Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4456 of Gilbert.

While serving in Italy, he met and fell in love with Domenica Carena and they were married July 12, 1947, at the Catholic church in Aurora. They made their home and raised their family in Pike River.

Walter worked at Lake Mine in Biwabik and Erie Mining Company in Hoyt Lakes as a shovel mechanic, retiring in 1970. He continued to log wood and enjoyed hunting and staying at the hunting shack with his brothers and brothers-in-law, nephews and family. He enjoyed fishing, especially at Comet Lake and on Pike River.

Walter enjoyed visiting with family and friends and having coffee and biscuits and having people over for spaghetti and meatballs, moijakka, sauna and some of his special homemade brew. He enjoyed working on his vegetable and potato garden, making hay and mowing his expanding lawn.

Survivors include his wife, Domenica; one son, David (Ginny) Hanka of Embarrass; one daughter, Anna Maria Adamiak of Embarrass; five grandchildren, Joseph Adamiak, James Matthew Adamiak, Christopher Raymond Adamiak, Tara Hanka and David Hanka; four great-grandchildren, Christopher John Peterson, Jamie Jo Adamiak, Kendra Roslyn Adamiak, Autum Amber Rose Adamiak; one sister, Adele Buono of Saugerties, N.Y.; and one sister-in-law, Katherine Hanka of Aurora.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Hank;a three brothers, Henry, Paul and Levi; two sisters, Inez Takkunen and Anelma Richter; son-in-law, Joseph Adamiak; and a niece, Susan Maki.

Gertrude J. Kimpling
Gertrude J. Kimpling, 93, SERVICES: Memorial service will be held in May at the Lutheran church in Raymond, Minn. A date will be provided later. Inurnment will be in the Clara City Cemetery in Clara City, Minn. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Gertrude J. Kimpling, 93, of Virginia, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

She was born on June 1, 1912, in Maynard, Minn., to John and Gertie (Smythe) Heike and grew up there. She had lived in the Brainerd area for many years and in the Virginia area since 1998. Gertrude lived at Edgewood Vista in Virginia, where she was the first Alzheimer’s resident in the new facility.

Gertrude loved farming and gardening and especially enjoyed working with her flowers. She also worked as a waitress in several restaurants.

She received excellent care at Edgewood Vista and at St. Michael’s, where she was given the name of “June Bug.’’

Survivors include one daughter, Doris Hayunga of Raymond, Minn.; two sons, Gleason “Gus’’ (Donna) Kimpling of Virginia and LeVern (Chris) Kimpling of Duluth; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Beatrice) Heike of Willmar, Minn.; and one sister, Bertha Suter of Murdock, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ray Heike; and one sister, Minnie Johnson; and a son-in-law, Francis Hayunga.

Thomas H. Mannila
Thomas H. Mannila, 62, SERVICES: Funeral at 1 p.m. Saturday at Good Sheperd Free Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Donald Norr will officiate. Thomas H. “Tom” Mannila, 62, of Virginia, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Nov. 20, 1943, in Kingman, Ariz., the son of Emil and Lorraine (Nelson) Mannila. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Tom worked for Minntac for more than 33 years as a production truck driver and train operator. On Feb. 14, 1993, he married Caroline Joyce. Tom was a member of Good Shepherd Free Lutheran Church in Virginia, the Chisholm Moose Lodge and Steelworkers Union Local 1938. Tom enjoyed the outdoors and was talented at woodworking.

He is survived by his loving wife, Caroline; children, Mindy (Tim) Natysin and Diana Whipple, all of Buffalo, Minn., Marilyn (Chip) Kinnunen of Sebring, Fla., Rita (Chris) Nafziger of Lenexa, Kan., and Kim (Tom) Jorgensen of Ramsey, Minn.; stepmother, Edna Mannila of River Grove, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Sharon Fields and Denise Lackey, both of Nevada, Coralee (Kevin Lonergan) Mannila of Monument, Colo., Robert Mannila of Chicago and Emil Mannila of Bayport, Minn.; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Betty Perocheski (with unborn child); brother, Harry; and sister, Corrine in infancy.

Paul A. Jiacik
Paul A. Jiacik, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Babbitt, with the Rev. John C. Bonk officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Arrangements by the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Paul A. Jiacik, 72, of Babbitt, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth.

He was born on June 13, 1933, in Ely to Peter and Ann (Kuznik) Jiacik and grew up there. He was a graduate of Ely High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. Paul was employed by Reserve Mining of Babbitt for 17 years and by Midwest Security Patrol for more than 15 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Babbitt.

He is survived by his wife, Diane, of Babbitt; five children, Kathy (Doug) Furnstahl of Ely, Mike Jiacik of Ely, Patsy (Gregg) Osaben of St. Paul, Annette (Troy) Enebak of Big Lake, Minn., and Robert (Shelley) Taylor of Hoyt Lakes; 10 grandchildren, Amanda, Meghan, Nick, Brittany, Libby, Haley, Drake, Dana, Dawson and Alex; two sisters, Dorothy (Dan) Stemer of Red Wing, Minn., and Carol Janeksela of Ely; and two brothers, Peter (Rose) Jiacik and Richard (Karen) Jiacik, both of Ely.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Toini M. Savela
Toini M. Savela, 90, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 1601 Fourth Ave. S., Anoka. Visitation from 3 to 5 p .m. Sunday at the Methven-Taylor Funeral Home, 850 E. Main St., Anoka, and continuing for one hour before the service at the church. Interment in Morningside Memorial Garden.

Toini M. Savela, 90, of Anoka, Minn., died March 9, 2006.

She will be greatly missed by son, Albin; daughter, Diane (Roy) Karkosh; grandchildren, Kristen, Nathan and Brian Karkosh; brother-in-law, Reino Kangas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
