Charles ‘Chuck’ E. Domitz
Charles ‘Chuck’ E. Domitz, 81, SERVICES: Memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook, with the Rev. Reuben Rosnau as officiant. Military honors will be accorded by the combined honor guards of the Cook VFW and Orr American Legion. Spring interment will be in Alango Township Cemetery.

Charles “Chuck” E. Domitz, 81, of Angora, died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, with his loving family at his side.

He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa and a friend to all.

He was born on Feb. 26, 1925, in Hulmboldt, Kan., the son of Charles E. Sr. and Ruby (Hunt) Domitz. He moved with his family to Joplin, Mo., where he grew up. Chuck served in the Navy during World War II, in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, and was stationed on many naval vessels. After his tour of duty, he went to Southern Minnesota, where he farmed. He then moved to the Range, where he was employed for many years as a millwright in construction. Chuck worked at setting up large equipment at various taconite and paper plants. He married Rosalyn Heikkinen on April 14, 1956, at Mason City, Iowa. Soon after marriage, they settled in Angora, where they had since resided. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of American Union, Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1757, and was a past Shrine member and constable of Alango Township. Chuck was one of the founding members of the new millwright union, Local #1348 in Virginia. He loved gardening, and was always reading and learning new things like locksmithing, hydraulic jack repair, along with being a ham radio operator and wood carver. He enjoyed the outdoors and nature, and liked feeding the birds and deer.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Rosalyn “Rosie”; one son, Stuart (Judy) Domitz, of Lino Lakes; two daughters, Charlyn (Chuck) Childs of Virginia and Gail (Jerry Lanari) Domitz of Eveleth; two brothers, LeRoy (Vera Dean) Domitz of Kent, Wash., and Delmar Dean (Toni) Domitz of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Doris Jean Gibbs, of Joplin, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jason, Adam and Amanda, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Melvin G. Johnson
Melvin G. Johnson, 89, SERVICES: Funeral 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, with the Rev. Melissa Stoller as officiant. Visitation one hour prior to service. Spring interment will be in Field Township Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Melvin G. Johnson, 89, of Cook died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

Melvin was born April 10, 1916, at Cook, the son of Christian and Emma (Newton) Johnson. He grew up in Cook, where he lived most of his life. He was a painter for American Bridge, and was a fishing guide for Bill Zup on Lac La Croix for more than 20 years. He married Marie Ortendahl on Dec. 23, 1936, at Glenwood, Minn. They were longtime members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. Mel had been a past Mason and Shriner, and belonged to the local Painter’s Union. He had built the house that he and Marie lived in for 68 years. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his family.

He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Trackler of Cook and Donna Sager of Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, on April 15, 2005; one son, Rodney Johnson, on Aug. 3, 2000; one grandson, Rocky Johnson, on Nov. 12, 2004; six brothers, Clarence “Slim,” Sanford, Clifford, Leslie, Stanley and Hilman Johnson; and two sisters, Ida Howland and Gertrude McIver.

Ben B. Wilkin Sr.
Ben B. Wilkin Sr., 81, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Cook. Rev. Randy Swenson will be the officiant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Spring interment will be in the Cook Community Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Ben B. Wilkin Sr., 81, of Cook, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, at the Cook Nursing Home.

Ben was born on Jan. 9, 1925, in Virginia to Benjamin and Liisa (Santa) Wilkin. He lived in Virginia until he enlisted in the Air Force in World War II, where he served in battles and campaigns in New Guinea, China, Eastern Mandates, Bismarck Archipelago, Western Pacific, Southern Philippines, and Luzon. He flew numerous missions as a ball turret gunner on a B24 heavy bomber and was awarded the Purple Heart after being injured on a mission. After his honorable discharge, he worked at the Hull Rust Mine, the lumber camps in Cusson, and got his start in the moving business working for Drieman Moving and Storage in Virginia. He married Doris Gustafson of Cook on Feb. 12, 1949, in Cook. Ben and Doris lived in Cook for many years before moving to Blaine in 1974. Ben worked for North American Van Lines until he retired in the early 1990s. He returned to live in Cook in 2003. Ben loved the outdoors and was happiest when he was hunting, fishing, and camping (most often in the most remote areas).

Ben is survived by his son, Ben Jr. (Tania) Wilkin of Cook; daughter, Janine (Mike) Nielsen of Coon Rapids; grandsons, Jeremy (Heather) Wilkin of St. Paul, Nathan and Skyler Wilkin of Cook and Lance Connor of Seattle, Wash.; granddaughter, Laura Nielsen of Coon Rapids; twin great-grandsons, Ethan and Carter Wilkin of St. Paul; sister, Clara Niemi of Virginia; 14 nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Doris on June 8, 2003; and grandson, Steven Nielsen on April 27, 2002.

Aloise Anthony “Al” Holewa
Aloise Anthony “Al” Holewa, 72, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Babbitt. The Rev. James Scheuer will celebrate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church and continue from 10 a.m. until the Mass Thursday at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Maki-Pinola American Legion Post No. 535 and the Babbitt Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1539. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Cemetery in Brennyville, Minn. The Rev. Tom Olson will officiate. Aloise Anthony “Al” Holewa, 72, of Babbitt, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, in his home.

He was born Aug. 27, 1933, in Benton County, Minn., the son of John and Helen (Przbytck) Holewa and was a longtime Babbitt resident. Al married Elizabeth Jane Weaver on July 15, 1957, in Foley, Minn., and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed as a tire man for Reserve Mining in Babbitt and worked at LTV Steel in Aurora. Al served as the chairman for the grievance committee of Steelworker’s Union Local No. 4757 of Babbitt; served on a committee at the Babbitt Steelworker’s Credit Union; was a member of the Maki-Pinola American Legion Post No. 535 of Babbitt; and was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus. He was an avid deer hunter and outdoorsman who enjoyed golf and spent time in the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children, Evan Aloise Holewa of Babbitt, Gwendoline Marie Webb of Gilbert, and Galen Anthony (Lizbeth) Holewa of Zim; grandchildren, Dewi Lee (Tiffany) Webb, Jedediah Anthony Holewa, Desiree Fay (Jeremy) Valento, Nathan Arnold (Karista) Holewa, Emily Ann Holewa, and Claire Elizabeth Holewa; great-grandchildren, Taylor Ann Holewa, Mackenzie Jean Holewa, Dallas Jasmine Valentino, Michelle Indy May Valentino, Madison Aubrey Holewa, and Tanner William Webb; brothers and sisters, Joe (Marian), George, Jack (Marianne), and Henry (Marlene) Holewa, Anne Baker, Rosie (Kenneth Sr.) Scherer, and Bernice (Sammy) Plante; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Clara Fischer, and Mary Wilke; brothers, Frank and Stanley Holewa.

William A. Helsel
William A. Helsel, 85, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik, with the Rev. Rebecca Wentworth officiating. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church and will continue one hour prior to service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik at a later date. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

William A. Helsel, 85, of Biwabik died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at the White Community Hospital Nursing Home in Aurora.

He was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Biwabik to Grover and Helmi Helsel. He attended school in Biwabik and later enlisted in the Navy in 1942, where he served two years before being discharged in 1944. Upon return from the Navy he moved to Hibbing, where he worked as a railroad conductor until his retirement. He married Irene Mortensen-Jesness on Dec. 6, 1979. He enjoyed watching sports on television and talking about sports in general. He loved his grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. His kind heart and generosity were appreciated by many.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; a daughter, Elaine (Don) Johnson of North Bend, Wash.; stepdaughters, Candy Groves (Paul Terch) of Virginia, Linda (Gary) Branville of Virginia and Becky (Ralph) Lotola of Palo; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty-Jane (Ed) Plattner, of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his sisters, Esther, Sarah, Erma, Mardelle and a child in infancy.

John M. Evanoff
John M. Evanoff, 91, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. Joel Hastings as celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Itasca Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids. Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

John M. Evanoff, 91, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Willow Wood Memory Care in Eveleth.

John grew up in Calumet, Minn., and was the oldest of nine children. He graduated from Greenway High School and worked at the Hill Annex Mine. He married Floretta Birch from Grand Rapids in 1937. They lived in Houghton, Mich., where John attended Michigan Tech. In 1952, they moved to Virginia, where John worked as a mining engineer for J. & L. Steel. John was active in the Boy Scouts for many years and loved Boundary Waters canoe trips. He golfed, skated, biked, did leather work on his shoe sewing machines, did woodworking and made huge kites. John was a great storyteller, and some were hard to believe. A harmonica was always in his pocket, and he played it wherever he went. In 1992, John and Floretta retired to Grand Rapids.

He is survived by one daughter, Loretta (Bernie) Russ; grandchildren, Kim (David) Butler, Wendy Robson, David Russ, and Michael (Venee) Russ; three sisters, Anne Bartalini, Barbara Evanoff, and Mary Miller.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Floretta; his parents; four brothers; and one sister.

Kay Pierce
Kay Pierce, 79, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Dulin United Methodist Church, Falls Church, Va. The Rev. Davies Kirkland will officiate. Kay Pierce, a native of Buhl, and a resident of Falls Church for the past seven years, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, after an extended illness. She was 79.

She was the sixth of 10 children of Matilda (Bacich) and John Strilich. Ms. Pierce was a graduate of the Minneapolis Business College, was employed by Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis from 1948 to 1950, the U.S. Army in Japan from 1950 to 1952, the City of Buhl for 16 years, and retired from the St. Louis County District Court Office in Hibbing. Ms. Pierce was an avid cross country skier, enjoyed golf, curling, ice skating, and she loved to read. She also served as a Girl Scout leader for several years and did volunteer work for the Girl Scouts. Throughout her life, Ms. Pierce continually toiled to rejuvenate her mental and physical strengths. Her appetite for knowledge never ceased. She loved to read and she kept up on current political and environmental issues.

Although Ms. Pierce loved the bucolic environment of northern Minnesota, she moved to Falls Church, Va., in 1999 to be with her daughter and daughter's family. While in Falls Church she worked part-time at the Mary Riley Styles Library.

An understanding of the authentic character of Ms. Pierce is conceptualized when one witnesses her appreciation for life. She found such joy in observing a snowfall, a sunset, a leaf. This love of God’s work carried over in the nurturing of her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by so many whom she has tenderly touched.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Pierce (David Butts); grandchildren, Katja and Beau Butts of Falls Church, Va., and Amanda Ann Butts of York, Pa.; a brother, Bill Strilich of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews with whom she was very close.

William J. Gecox

William J. Gecox, 73, of Tower, passed away Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born Nov. 28, 1932, the son of John Thomas and Mabel Smith in Virginia. Bill served in the Korean War as a demolitionist with the U.S. Army. On Oct. 23, 1954, he married Jean Andersen in Chicago. Bill was a registered land surveyor and taught surveying in Chicago for a few years. In 1985 he retired from Bechtel Corp. as a Contract Administrator. Following his retirement, Bill worked as a guide for five years in the Soudan Underground Mine.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean; son, Jeffrey (Jeanette), both of Tower; daughter, April (Bruce) Boxeth of North Branch, Minn.; five grandchildren, Jamie, Jenny, Julie, Sara and Garrett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepfather, John Gecox.

Terry D. Braden
Terry D. Braden, 66, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The Rev. Reuben Rosnau will officiate. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery of Buyck.

Terry D. Braden, 66, of Buyck, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at the Cook Nursing Home.

He was born on April 10, 1940, at Fairhaven Township in Stearns County, Minn., the son of Howard and Mildred (Miller) Braden. He moved with his family in 1950 from Kimball to Deer River, where he attended area schools. He graduated from Deer River High School in 1958, then from the former Itasca Community College and also attended Bemidji State College. He started his employment with the U.S. Forest Service in 1961 and was first stationed in Ely. He soon was transferred Buyck station, where he remained throughout his career. He retired as an engineer for the Forest Service in 1994. Terry was an avid fisherman, hunter, and had a great appreciation for the outdoors. He and special friend Helen McCormick were both caregivers, and they valued and complemented each other. His family fondly remembers Terry as always being there for family events. He had been making his residence at the Cook Nursing Home the last few years.

He is survived by a sister, Juanita “Nita” (Del) Marty of North Branch, Minn.; and two nephews, Kevin Marty of New Hope, Minn., and Steven (Robin) Marty of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard in 1997, and Mildred in 1994; one brother, Howard in 2001; and his special friend, Helen McCormick in 2005.

E. Tracy Kindberg
E. Tracy Kindberg, 87, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2012 E. Superior St., Duluth, with the Rev. Lewis Reinemann officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the service. Burial will take place in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Cloquet. Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.

E. Tracy Kindberg, 87, of Superior, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at Fairview Hospital in Wyoming, Minn.

She was born July 3, 1919, in Graff, Minn., the daughter of Philip and Amelia (Oman) Hoefer. She graduated from high school in Barnum and the former Duluth State Teachers College. She taught school in Hermantown and Cohasset prior to her marriage to Gordon W. Kindberg. She was a homemaker, a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aurora, and was active in the Lutheran Women Missionary League. Tracy had previously lived in Hoyt Lakes for approximately 40 years. She loved to sew, knit, crochet and quilt. She also loved baking and spending time at the cabin on the Whiteface Reservoir.

She is survived by one son, Carl (Mary Kay) Kindberg of Cincinnati, Ohio; three daughters, Charlotte (Tom) Langley of Cloquet, Christine (Harlow) Filteau of Superior, and Selma (Jeff) Stephenson of Duluth; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon in 1989; two infant children; one daughter, Eileen; one son, Philip; and her parents.

Ruth G. Schumacher
Ruth G. Schumacher, 78, SERVICES: Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Her nephew, the Rev. Thomas F. Gaeke of Tampa, Fla., and the Rev. Father John O’Donnell will be the con-celebrants. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Ruth G. Schumacher, 78, of Virginia, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at the Westwood Senior Independent Living Center in Duluth.

Ruth was born Nov. 30, 1927, to Dr. Francis and Mary (Hendrickson) Gaynor in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated from Julienne Girls High School in 1945 and received her teaching certificate from the University of Dayton. She taught at Holy Angels Catholic School until 1950. She was united in marriage on July 1, 1950, to Philip K. Schumacher of Dayton, Ohio. They moved to Virginia in 1954, where they founded the Arrowhead Nursing Home in Eveleth. Ruth taught religious education and volunteered as a substitute teacher at Marquette school for over 20 years.

She was active in her community and church, serving as a volunteer at the Virginia Municipal Hospital, Virginia Public Library, Arrowhead Health Care Centers, and the Holy Spirit Woman’s Guild.

She served on the Duluth Diocesan Board for Catholic Education.

Throughout her life she was a dedicated homemaker and caregiver receiving great joy and fulfillment from her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Schumacher (Tab Baumgartner) of Duluth, and Carolyn (Timothy) Clark of Elk River, Minn.; two sons, Charles (Nancy) Schumacher of Duluth, Bernard (Julie) Schumacher of Middlebury, Conn.; twelve grandchildren, Benjamin, Daniel, Matthew, Marasie, Jean, Elizabeth, William, Lisa, Joseph, Sam, Andrew and Mary; her niece, Paula Termuhlen of Dayton, Ohio; brother, Robert Gaynor of Dayton, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank J. Siskar
Frank J. Siskar, 90, SERVICES: Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. John’s Catholic Church in Biwabik with the Rev. David Forsman as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

Frank J. Siskar, 90, of McKinley, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, in St. Raphael’s Health and Rehab Center in Eveleth.

He was born Nov. 10, 1915, in McKinley, to Frank and Agnes (Pintar) Siskar and was a 1934 graduate of Gilbert High School. He married Frances Miletich on Nov. 30, 1940. Frank worked for Pickands Mather Mining Company and retired from Erie Mining Company as a heavy duty equipment operator in 1979.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and served as secretary for the SNPJ Lodge. He was a former member of the Biwabik Lions Club and formerly served as mayor and city councilman for the City of McKinley. Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; children, Veronica (Raymond) Byrne of Crystal, Frank A. (Kathleen) Siskar of Tower, John (Margaret) Siskar of San Clemente, Calif., Marjorie (James) Tyacke of Marina, Calif., and Mary (Gary) Waseleski of Mountain Iron; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Agnes Licari of Duluth; brother, Jerry Siskar of Virginia; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Joe and John.
