Thomas E. Mahai
Brenda Pinsonnault of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Thomas E. Mahai. The lifelong Duluth resident succumbed to cancer Jan. 4, 2003, at the age of 77.

He was president of City Wide Delivery Service for over 40 years. Tom was a WW II Navy veteran. He was an early member of the Scouts and Raiders, Naval Beach Party #3, and was active in combat in the South Pacific Theater for the duration of the war.

Tom is also survived by six other children, 14 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, three brothers, two sisters, and the mother of his children Marian Mahai.

Mina Katherine (Wombacher) Lorix
Mina Katherine (Wombacher) Lorix, who was born in Proctor and was the women's recreation director for Proctor and Two Harbors DM&IR, died Wed., Jan. 8, 2003, in Duluth. She was 83.

A lifetime area resident she was born in Proctor on March 26, 1919 to Katherine and Henry Wombacher. She was a graduate of Proctor High School, and a graduate of the University of Minnesota as a physical education major. Mina started her teaching career at Mora, Minn. and continued at Brainerd Jr. College and Muskingham College in New Concord, Ohio. In 1953 she began teaching as a physical education instructor at Stanbrook Hall at the College of St. Scholastica. She retired from there in 1979, after 26 years. She enjoyed sailing Lake Superior with her husband Bob. Mina was director at St. Luke's Hospital volunteer guild, and past president of the Pike Lake Women's Golf Club. She had been a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 1998, and her sisters Helen and Katherine.

Survivors include her sisters Lorraine Caron of Duluth and Marion Abbott of Olympia Fields, Ill., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum in Hermantown. Arrange-ments were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Wanda Gladstone
Area residents Peggy Lundeen, and Mallory and Delaney Lundeen are mourning the death of their grandmother and great-grandmother, respectively. Wanda Gladstone of Des Moines, Iowa, died of pneumonia on Fri., Dec. 27, 2002, in Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was 100.

She was born in Mystic Iowa. She was a graduate of East High School in Des Moines and also attended business school there. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Great Western Railroad before she started her family. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a longtime member of numerous other organizations, including P.E.O. and the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

She is also survived by her son, seven other grandchildren, 12 other great-grandchildren, a son-in-law, and a sister-in-law.

Maynard Duane Honkala
Former Proctor Journal employee Maynard Duane Honkala, of Proctor, died Wed., Jan. 8, 2003 in a Duluth hospital after a long illness. He was 63.

He was born in Duluth to Alfred and Martha Glader Honkala, and was a 1958 graduate of Carlton High School. He had worked for the Acme Tool Co. in Minneapolis, worked construction in Minneapolis and Duluth and later worked as a Health Care Worker in Calif. He married Minerva 'Minnette' Mendez Picache in 1995.

He is survived by his wife Minerva 'Minnette', children Cheri Lynn of Philadelphia, Maria Schultz, Gina Honkala and Ann (Robert) Anderson, all of Minneapolis, Callie Jo Honkala of Kewaskum, Wis., stepdaughter Marie Picache of Proctor, stepson Ohskar Picache of Calif., sisters Vivian (Herb) Huard of Duluth, Delores 'Dory' Nelson of Proctor, Dolly (Larry) Wood of Two Harbors, Marilyn (Lee) Fawcett of Duluth and Cheryl (Mario) Schinigoi of Duluth, foster sister Julie Norton of Duluth, brothers Wil A. (Doris) Honkala of St. Paul, Marvin (Char) Honkala Gunnarson of Cloquet, Clarence (Fe) Honkala of Calif., and six grandchildren.

Burial was at Park Hill Cemetery.

Lester 'Les' Raymond Olson
Keith Olson of Twig is mourning the death of his father Lester 'Les' Raymond Olson of Duluth. He died Wed., Jan. 8, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was 85.

Les was born in Duluth. He married Shirley O'Day in 1946. Les graduated from Denfeld High School and served in the Army during WW II in the Infantry's 101st Division. He served in the Pacific and European theaters and received the Bronze Star. He retired in Feb. of 1982, after 32 years as a Locomotive Engineer with the DM&IR. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Duluth Heights, VFW Post 6320, 55 club life member, and a volunteer at the Damiano Center.

He is also survived by his wife Shirley, another son Kurt of Gary New Duluth, a daughter Karleen (Steve) Ruesink of Prior Lake, Minn., eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrange-ments were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Alice C. Witkowski
Alice C. Witkowski, who was born in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School in 1931, died Sun., Jan. 12, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was 90.

Alice was born in 1912 to James and Mary (Drummey) Hannan. She had worked as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Hospital until retiring in 1972. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and its St. Margaret's Guild, the Viva Club, and the Retail Clerks Retirees.

Alice is survived by a daughter Mary Alice (Larry) Wyland of Detroit, Mich., six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law Dorothy Hannan of Proctor, and three nices and two nephews.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Harry E. Loisel
Raymond Loisel of Proctor is saddened by the loss of his brother Harry E. Loisel of Cloquet. He died Fri., Jan. 10, 2003, in Silver Bay. He was 84.

He was born in Cloquet and attended Our Lady of the Sacred Heart grade school, and Cloquet High School with the class of 1937. He served with the CCC before he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific. He then enlisted with the U.S. Air Force in 1947, and served for over 20 years, retiring in 1964.

He married Anna Mae Nelson in 1946 in Cloquet. Harry worked for a short time for the Northwest Paper Co. He managed the Cloquet Country Club for many years, and also the Eagles Club. He also had a catering service and worked as a sales representative for Arco Coffee. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. He was Past Commander and life Member of Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979 of Cloquet, and served on the Honor Guard. He was Past Seam Squirrel and Life Member of the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent #59, was 2nd Area Commander of the Cooties, and was Hospital Chairman for many years. Harry was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Carlton County Chapter 18, and served as commander. He was a member of the Carl Anderson American Legion Post 262 of Cloquet, the AmVets Post 17 of Cloquet, and a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association. He was a member of the Retired Enlisted Association, Hibbing Chapter 96, and the Duluth Chapter. He was a Charter Sponsor of the Air Force Memorial Foundation, and former member of the Cloquet Eagles Club, and served as past president.

He is also survived by his wife Anna Mae 'Dot', four sons, five daughters, two other brothers, two sisters, 25 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one expected great-grandchild in February.

Interment services were held at Old Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet, with Military Honors presented by the Combined Cloquet Honor Guard.

Carol L. Dunaisky
Services were held last Sat. for Carol L. Dunaisky, 75, of West Duluth, a former Proctor resident who died Wed., Jan. 15, 2003.

She was born June 19, 1927 in Duluth to Leonard and Martha Ernst. She was an avid cribbage player and a long time bartender at the Proctor VFW. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

She was preceded in death by her husband Florian 'Porky' on Aug. 20, 2000; and her parents.

She is survived by her children, Florian 'Sandy' (Sue) of North Branch, MN, Linda (Bob) Hanson of Duluth, Diane Mehlum of Duluth, Rita Dunaisky of Duluth, Lorry (Roger) Sievert of Duluth, Gertie (Ken) Simon of Burnsville, MN, Joe of Duluth, Sandra Johnson of Duluth, Judy (Carl) Berg of Duluth; brothers, Leonard 'Peewee' (Ethel) Ernst, Gordy (Lois) Ernst; sister, Janice (Rod) Pederson; brother-in-law, Andrew (Irene) Dunaisky; Auntie, Gertrude Michaud; 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Peter Ernest 'Pete' Swanson
Services were held last week for Peter Ernest 'Pete' Swanson of Munger who died Mon., Jan. 13, 2003 as a result of a tragic accident on Grand Lake. He was 48.

He was born in 1954 in Duluth to Ernest and Ruth (Thompson) Swanson. He was a Munger resident for the past 15 years. He graduated from Superior Vo-Tech as a machinist. He had been an employee of Moline Machinery for the past 25 years, working his way from machinist to design engineer. As a result of his development, he received patents for machinery manufactured by Moline. He was a member of BCA Pool League in Duluth. He married Donna C. Watters in 1979 in Hermantown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law Caroline Watters.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, daughters, Nikki (fiancee, Corey Pond) of Duluth and Britt at home; father-in-law, Donald Watters of Wellington, Kan.; brothers, Larry (Chris) Peterson of Twig, Tom (Judy) Peterson of Wash., and Danny Maki of Cloquet; sister-in-law, Diane (Gary) Bednar of Ill.; brothers-in-law, Charles (Jerri) Elder of Redwood Falls, Minn. and Steven (Fay) Elder of Proctor; and many aunts, uncles, nieces nephews and very special friends.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Clarence J. Sway
Clarence J. Sway, who owned and operated Proctor Radio and TV, died Fri., Jan. 17, 2003 in Moose Lake. He was 90.

He was born in Lake City, Minn., and lived in St. Paul. At the age of seven his family moved to Kerrick, where he grew up and attended school. He later worked at the CC Camps. Clarence was an Army Air Force Veteran of WW II and had served in the 374th Bomber Squadron in China and India. He married Evelyn Kahring in Moose Lake in 1942. They lived in Proctor where Clarence worked as an electrician for DM&IR Railroad for over 18 years. He also volunteered for the Civil Air Patrol. In 1963 they moved to Barnum where Clarence owned and operated Sway Electrical until retiring in 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Evelyn, five children, a sister, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Patrick Anthony DeGrio
Margaret Parrott and Mary Leiss of Proctor are mourning the loss of their brother, Patrick Anthony DeGrio of Duluth who passed away Mon., Jan. 13, 2003 in St. Mary's Hospice. He was 79.

He was born in 1923 in Duluth to Michael and Rosina (Cilibert) DeGrio. He was a proud veteran of World War II and served in Saipan and Okinawa. He was a welder mechanic and a member of Local Union 49ers. He worked at Superwood, Wallner Welding, Zenith Dredge and retired as superintendent of Arrowhead Blacktop Co. He married Gloria Jean Nelson in 1948 in Duluth.

He is also survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria; a son, two daughters and five grandchildren.

A private service was held with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Creighton R. 'Crate' Jentoft
Colleen Lavamaki of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Creighton R. 'Crate' Jentoft. He died Fri., Jan. 17, 2003 at the age of 80.

He was born on Park Point and lived there his entire life. He married June R. Adams in 1942. He was retired from Arrowhead Creamery. Crate served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hammon in WW II. He was a member of the VFW Post #137 and played in the Cribbage League there, the Park Point Community Club, the Buoys and Gulls, and St. Andrews By-the-Lake Episcopal Church. He helped in bringing the Vista Star to Duluth in 1988 as cook/wheelsman.

He is also survived by his wife June, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, a sister, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
