Joanne J. Smokey, 70, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, near Virginia. The Rev. John Fraham, III and the Rev. Don Stauty will co-officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia. Joanne J. Smokey, 70, of Britt, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, in her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born April 10, 1936, in White Elk Township, Minn., the daughter of Walter and Julia (Henke) Grulke. She graduated from Aitkin High School in 1954, and soon after, relocated to the Iron Range. Joanne was united in marriage to Richard Smokey on Oct. 23, 1955. She was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church near Virginia. Joanne enjoyed being outdoors, especially gardening, biking, hiking, and skiing.

She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 51 years, Dick; son, Steven (Pam) Smokey of Bismarck, N.D.; granddaughter, Elise Smokey of Bismarck, N.D.; siblings, John Grulke of Aitkin, Lois (Wilbur) Lueck of Deerwood, and Eileen (Walter) Moritz of Embarrass; brother-in-law, James Smokey of Virginia; sister-in-law, Norma Grulke of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Kenneth and Gordon Grulke.

Rose M. (Orazem) Syring
Rose M. (Orazem) Syring, 89, SERVICES: No services will be held. Burial will be at Forrest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Services entrusted to The Cremation Society of Minnesota, 624-5200.

Rose M. (Orazem) Syring, 89, of Superior, Wis., passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at St. Francis Nursing Home in Superior.

Rose was born April 6, 1917, in Aurora to Joseph Sr. and Frances (Prijatel) Orazem.

She is survived by a brother, Charles Orazem of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by husband, Ewald, and 10 siblings.

Robert Joseph Pecha
Robert Joseph Pecha, 66, SERVICES: Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service in the church on Friday. The Rev. Lloyd Mudrak and the Rev. Paul Larson will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday in Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Coleraine. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Duluth at 3 p.m. Friday. Any memorials received will be directed to the Robert and Margaret Pecha Youth in Arts Fund within the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to the Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, 218-326-6505.

Robert Joseph Pecha, 66, of Grand Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006, at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids.

He was born April 16, 1940, in Soudan, to Anton and Rose (Kalsich) Pecha.

He is survived by Margaret, his loving wife of 37 years; sister, Darlene Pecha of Soudan; brother, Anthony Pecha of Tower; uncle, Joseph Kalsich of Ely; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ronald and Donald Pecha; and sister, Delores Johnson.

Frank Eugene Loushin
Frank Eugene Loushin, 90, SERVICES: Private memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Northern Lights Section (upstairs) of the Ely Bloomenson Community Nursing Home. Pastor George Wick will officiate. Burial will be in the Ely Cemetery. Memorials preferred. Family services by Kerntz Brothers, A Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely. Frank Eugene Loushin, 90, of Ely died Monday, Oct. 9, 2006 at the Ely Bloomenson Community Nursing Home.

He was born on Dec. 3, 1915, in Ely, the son of Frank and Mary (Takavitz) Loushin. Frank grew up and worked on the Sekora Farm in Owatonna, Minn. He worked for the CCC Camp in Buyck and returned to Ely to work at the Pioneer Mine. He later worked for Lonyear Drilling Company and the U.S. Forestry Department.

On Nov. 13, 1948, he married Verna Helen Laitinen. The couple resided on Pattison Street. This was their last home, which Frank took much pride in. He spent much of his time in the garage tinkering and visiting with neighbors. Frank had a great sense of humor and loved to tell jokes.

He was a member of the Ely Moose Club.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Verna; two sons, Dale (Diane) of Duluth and Gary Laitinen of Zimmerman, Minn.; two daughters, Darlene (Bill) Liapis of Britt and Diane Jiacik of Babbitt; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Leonard, Louis and two sisters Dorothy Eycbrson and Francis Knutson.

Ralph F. Laurich
Ralph F. Laurich, 68, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth, with the Rev. Joel Hastings as celebrant. Visitation for one hour beore the Mass at the church. Interment in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth. Ralph F. Laurich, 68, of Eveleth, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Eveleth to Frank F. and Angeline M. (Potkor) Laurich. He was a graduate of Eveleth High School and a lifelong Eveleth resident. He worked as a printer for W.A. Fischer Printing Company in Virginia for many years.

Ralph was married to Beverly E. Williams on July 31, 1976.

He enjoyed working in his yard, boating, fishing and restoring old automobiles. Ralph also played the accordion and loved listening to polka music.

He is survived by his brother, Robert (Margaret) Laurich of Sarasota, Fla.; two cousins, Annabell and Rudy Alesh of Eveleth; one niece and one nephew; and his much-loved pets, Barkley and Winner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Beverly, on Aug. 15, 2006.

Armiida ‘Ozzie’ Rudlong
Armiida ‘Ozzie’ Rudlong, 82, SERVICES: Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Mountain Iron with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Kristin M. Foster will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Messiah Lutheran Church. Military rites will be accorded by Yoki-Bergman Post No. 220. Arrangements are with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Armiida H. “Ozzie’’ Rudlong, 82, of Mountain Iron died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at the Virginia Convalescent Center after a long illness.

Ozzie was born on July 24, 1924, to John and Hulda (Marjasuo) Otava in Mountain Iron. She graduated from Mountain Iron Schools in 1942. She attended Suomi College and worked in Duluth. Following her service in the WACS during World War II, she attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Ozzie was united in marriage on April 7, 1950, to Lawrence Rudlong. They made their home in Stewartville, Minn., where they operated a chicken hatchery. Lawrence died on May 20, 1960, after which Ozzie lived in Rochester and later was employed in the motel business in Wisconsin. She moved back to Mountain Iron in the 1970s and was employed for a short time by U.S. Steel. Ozzie lived in Mountain Iron since that time and was active in politics at all levels, often writing letters to elected officials expressing her opinions. She volunteered on many local committees, including the Mountain Iron Planning and Zoning Commission, the All-Class Reunion Committee, Merritt Days Committee and more. Ozzie was an active member of the American Legion Post No. 220 and the Mountain Iron Lion’s Club. She loved her dogs, Go-Go, Susie and Pewee and in their memory was a supporter of the Mesabi Humane Society. Messiah Lutheran Church was very dear to Ozzie’s heart where she was a life-long member.

Survivors include her “adopted kids,’’ Allison and Bryan Wiitala and their family, Matthew (Jacqueline) Wiitala, Mikael Wiitala, Mayme Wiitala; sister, Ruth (Milton) Legg; nieces, Margaret (Richard) Matyska, Karen Bowie, Jennifer (Lowell) Cin, Cynthia (Christopher) Kauffeld, Sandra Halme and Marilyn (Ray) Twite; nephews, John (Barbara) Otava, Thomas (Julie) Legg, David Christian and John and Martin Halme; special cousin, Antti Otava; many grand nieces and nephews. She will also be sadly missed by Joe, Alex and Sam Smith and Lori Diekoff.

Ozzie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and siblings, Kaarlo, Oliver, Martin, Gertrude Halme and Bertha.

Dagne Irene Virant
Dagne Irene Virant, 82, SERVICES: Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora with Fr. John O’Donnell officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Dagne Irene Virant, 82, of Aurora died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, the anniversary of her husband’s death, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

She was born June 1, 1924, in Aurora to John and Vilma (Rannila) Halonen. She was a 1942 graduate of Aurora High School and later lived in Cleveland, Ohio, Louisville, Ky., and Minneapolis. She returned to Aurora in 1945 and worked at the Veterans Service Office in Biwabik. On June 23, 1946, she married Frank Virant in Aurora. Dagne worked as a clerk at the Orazem-Smolich Clothing Store in Aurora and Maurices in Virginia. Dagne was a member of the Aurora American Legion Post Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife and mother who especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Jon (Jean) Virant of Virginia, Steven (Kathy) Virant of Savannah, Ga., and Michael Virant of Naples, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Stephen, Daniel, Ezekiel, Julie, Jill, Joseph and Jennifer; sister, Laura Ahlfors of Alexandria, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; and special friend, John Smolich.

Donald M. Fasteen
Donald M. Fasteen, 77, SERVICES: Visitation will be one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday at the Gethsemane Evangelical Church in Virginia. Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Donald M. Fasteen, 77, of Virginia died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at his residence.

He was born on July 21, 1929, to Milton and Agnes (Erickson) Fasteen in Virginia. He was a graduate of Virginia High School, where he earned his nickname “Flash,’’ Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He married Gladyce Juhola on Dec. 20, 1958, in Virginia. He taught life sciences for 41 years at St. Louis County Schools, with the majority of the years at Cook Junior and Senior High. He was a lifelong resident of Virginia and an active member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, collecting wild flowers and spending time at his cabin at Lake Vermilion.

Survivors include his son, Jay (Jane) Fasteen of St. Paul; and a twin brother, Ronald (Helen) Fasteen of Detroit Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladyce; and a brother, Robert.

Catherine L. Rutchasky
Catherine L. Rutchasky, 47, SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Orr. Rev. Art Dale will be the officiant. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.

Catherine L. Rutchasky, 47, of Buyck, died at home on Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lorena A. Nygard
Lorena A. Nygard, 91, SERVICES: A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Monday with visitation beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert with Fr. John O’Donnell officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Redwood Falls, Minn.

Lorena A. Nygard, 91, of Virginia died Saturday at her residence in Virginia.

Survivors include sons, Wayne (Janet) of Carlton; Harlan (Charlotte) of Biwabik; three sisters, Alice, Rose and Katherine; one brother, Bernard Hertling; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Adelaide Hertling; husband, Haino; and nine brothers and sisters.

Jay Wilbert Mattson
Jay Wilbert Mattson, 46, SERVICES: Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. John’s Catholic Church in Biwabik with Rebecca Wentworth officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Jay Wilbert Mattson, 46, of rural Gilbert died accidentally Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at his home.

He was born Jan. 21, 1960, in Eveleth to Wilbert and Phyllis Mattson. He was a 1978 graduate of Biwabik High School and later attended Staples Area Vocational and Technical Institute of heavy equipment operation. On Sept. 26, 1981, he married Diane Ballavance in Biwabik. Jay worked for Gulbranson Excavation and then Koski Logging prior to currently working at Minntac as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Community United Church of Christ in Biwabik, and the Steelworkers Union No. 1938. Jay enjoyed camping, home mechanics and all types of building projects. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Diane; sons, Jered and Jakob, both at home; mother, Phyllis Mattson of Virginia; brothers, Jeff (Kim) Mattson and James “Jimmer’’ Mattson of Lakeland; sisters, Rainee (Kevin) Merritt of Lakeland and Julie (Ted) Erchul of Mountain Iron; mother-in-law, Ellie Ballavance of Biwabik; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gayle (Mark) Amundson of Chisholm, Brenda (Steve) Jarvi of Wynne Lake and Karen (Darren) Egan of Biwabik; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbert; and father-in-law, Bruce Ballavance.

Margaret Jo ‘Peg’ Kapsch
Margaret Jo ‘Peg’ Kapsch, 62, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Cottage Grove, Minn., with the Rev. Bill Deziel as celebrant. Visitation 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kok Funeral Home, 7676 80th St. S., Cottage Grove, and one hour prior to service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Cottage Grove Cemetery.

Margaret Jo “Peg’’ Kapsch, beloved mother and grandmother, 62, of Oakdale, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at the Stillwater Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Nov. 10, 1941, in Rhode Island, the daughter of Stanley and Marie (Dwyer) Tregillis. She was raised in Hoyt Lakes and graduated from Aurora/Hoyt Lakes High School in 1960. She graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in 1963. She enjoyed antiquing, collecting Belleek and bowling.

She is survived by her sons, John (Carmon) of Stillwater, Bill (Anita) of Cottage Grove and Jim (Tami) of Prescott, Wis.; grandchildren, Ashley, Justin, Jayne and Zachary; a brother, Sidney (Marilyn) Tregillis, of Sylvania, Ohio; sisters, Liz (Paul) White of Edenton, N.C., Marie (Joe) Hallet of Westerville, Ohio, and Jean (John) Dallas of Virginia; a sister-in-law, Carol Tregillis, of Coon Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John; and her parents.
