Joseph ‘Jipper’ Shega
Joseph ‘Jipper’ Shega, 84, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert, with the Rev. Joel Hastings as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert and will continue for one hour before the service at the church.

Burial will be in the Gilbert Cemetery following Mass, with military honors by George and Mark Klobuchar Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4456, of which he was a life member.

Joseph “Jipper’’ Shega, 84, of Gilbert, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Cornerstone Villa in Buhl.

He was born in Eveleth on Feb. 7, 1922, to John and Frances (Hace) Shega.

His family moved to Gilbert, where he attended school and graduated from high school.

Joe worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps after a year of college before enlisting in the Army.

He served during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

He received several decorations including special recognition for participating in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp.

On July 12, 1952, he was united in marriage to Esther Liimatta.

He worked as an ironworker for 40 years and was a maintenance man and bus driver for the Gilbert schools before his retirement in 1980.

He served one term on the Gilbert School Board and two terms on the Gilbert City Council.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gilbert and several union and fraternal organizations.

He enjoyed all sports, painting and working in his shop creating artwork from wood and metal.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; daughters, Teresa Shega of Gilbert and Nancy (William Percy) Shega of Duluth; sons, John (Kathy) Shega of Apple Valley and Thomas (Pamela) Shega of Ely Lake; sister, Margaret Setnicker of Aurora; grandchildren, Steven, Tracy and Amy, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Mary Beaupre, Rose Schaefbauer and Frances Galonski; and one brother, Anthony.

Joe’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to the St. Mary’s Hospice East Range Team and to Cornerstone Villa for their care and support.

Maggie Nemanick Gross
Maggie Nemanick Gross, SERVICES: Funeral Mass celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Rockville, Minn.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Rockville.

Maggie Nemanick Gross died Sept. 27, 2006, at Good Shepherd Community in Sauk Rapids.

She was born in Eveleth to Anton C. and Anne Nemanick on March 25, 1936, and graduated from Eveleth High School in 1954.

She graduated from St. Cloud State University and taught at Clark Elementary School in Rockville for 32 years, retiring in 1992.

She is survived by a son, Jimmie; daughters, Ann Marie (Pete Keely) and Sue (Tom Kampa); granddaughter, Addison Keely; sisters, Helen Dolence, Betty Carlson, Katie Rannikar, Tess Pampush, Pat Tuuri and Barbara Sapik; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ann Skerjance, Mary Burbank and Carol Skoff; and brother, Anton Nemanick.

Jim Gross, Maggie’s husband of 47 years, died on Oct. 4, 2006, in Rockville and was buried beside her on Oct. 6.

In addition to their children, Jim is survived by a sister, Sister James Marie Gross of Dubuque, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

John C. ‘Jack’ Rogge
John C. ‘Jack’ Rogge, 80, SERVICES: Funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday in Faith Lutheran Church in Hoyt Lakes with the Rev. Terrance Stratton officiating.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Military honors will be accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard.

Burial will be at a later date in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.

Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

John C. “Jack’’ Rogge, 80, of Hoyt Lakes, has been called home to be with his wife, Donna, and son, Steve.

He left our world for a more beautiful, peaceful place on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006.

He was at home, surrounded by family.

He was born May 13, 1926, in Windom, Minn., to Carl and Esther (Ness) Rogge.

He remained in Windom throughout his childhood and in 1943 enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II.

That year he also married his high school sweetheart, Donna Olson.

Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946 he worked at the hardware store in Windom.

In 1957 he moved his family to Hoyt Lakes and was employed by Erie Mining Company as a plumber.

Later he was named manager of Peoples Natural Gas that was introduced in Hoyt Lakes during the 1960s.

Jack was active in local government as a city councilman during the mining boom and was instrumental in the development of Hoyt Lakes.

He was a member of the Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce and was proud to have been a part of many important decisions that have had a lasting effect on the city.

They moved from Hoyt Lakes to the Twin Cities in the early 1970s where he was the district manager for Northern Natural Gas.

They returned to Hoyt Lakes upon retiring in 1986 and enjoyed many winters in Florida.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and attending the Windom class reunions.

Survivors include his sons, Tom of Brainerd, David of Woodbury, Casey (Patti) of Hoyt Lakes, Mitch of Inver Grove Heights and Brad (Dixie) of Orange Park, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Diana Rogge of Dixon, Mo.; grandchildren, Tom Rogge, Kristine Kunze, Chan Rogge, John Rogge, Tara Lamppa, Amy Kopp, Rheanne Halliday, Megan Marr and Ryan Rogge; 12 great-grandchildren, Olivia, Luke, Kasey, Abby, Noah, Theo, Cole, Bryce, Tyler, Zach, Ella, Jack and one expected great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eleanor; son, Steve, in May 2006; and wife, Donna, in June 2006.

May he rest in peace.

Hilma K. McDermond
Hilma K. McDermond, 93, SERVICES: As per Mrs. McDermond’s request, there will be no formal service.

Arrangements are by the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Hilma K. McDermond, 93, of Pengilly, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing.

She was born Sept. 2, 1913, in Grey Eagle, minn., to Zack and Katherine (Wachnick) Marty and grew up there.

On Sept. 3, 1929, she married Mearl McDermond in Grey Eagle.

She had been a resident of Pengilly for 55 years.

She was a member of St. Kevin’s Catholic Church in Pengilly and was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Edward (Shirley) McDermond of Pengilly and Jack McDermond of Nashwauk; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mearl, in 2001; one daughter and one grandson.

Robert L. Schaefbauer
Robert L. Schaefbauer, 73, SERVICES: A Memorial Mass for Bob will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia.

Rosary will be read at 10 a.m. The Rev. John O’Donnell will celebrate the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Lady of Good Counsel, 2076 St. Anthony Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104.

Family services provided by Bauman-Cron, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia.

Robert L. “Bob” Schaefbauer, age 73 of Virginia, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Home in St. Paul.

He was born July 28, 1933 in Herreid, S.D., the son of Joseph and Annabelle (Traxinger) Schaefbauer.

Bob graduated from Herreid High School, and went on to attend cosmetology school in Chicago.

On Nov. 5, 1960, Bob was united in marriage to Betty Farley.

The couple moved to Virginia in 1972.

He worked as a meat-cutter at Super One for many years, and was a member of the former Virginia Moose Lodge.

Bob enjoyed hunting and playing cards, but above all was his love for fishing.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Betty; daughters, Brigitte (Larry) Atkinson of Odenville, Ala. and Suzanne Schaefbauer of Hopkins; grandchildren, Bianca and Jake Atkinson; brothers, Raymond (Johanna) of Palo, Myron (Geraldine) of Richfield, Eugene (Marilyn) of Herreid, S.D., and Lawrence (Bonnie) of Mobridge, S.D.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Norbert.

Mary Sherek
Mary Sherek, 91, SERVICES: Memorial Mass will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Johns Catholic Church in Biwabik with the Rev. David Forsman as celebrant.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at church.

Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Biwabik.

Mary Josephine Sherek, 91, of Biwabik, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at the White Community Nursing Home in Biwabik.

She was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Biwabik, to Matt and Mary Dolinshek. She attended school in McKinley.

On June 19, 1937, she was united in marriage to Peter Sherek.

Following marriage she stayed home and worked as a homemaker.

Mary was a member of the St. Johns Catholic Church Women’s Group.

She also enjoyed being in the outdoors, especially ice fishing and berry picking.

She is survived by sons, Robert Sherek of Louisville, Ken., Donald “Butch” (Charlene) Sherek of Hutter; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Amelia (LeRoy) Mestnick of Biwabik; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her parents; sisters, Frances and Stephania; a brother Matt in infancy; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Sherek.

Patricia L. Butala
Patricia L. Butala, 70, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday in Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth the Rev. Joel Hastings as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Gilbert.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass at church. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery.

Patricia L. Butala, 70, of McKinley, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at her home with her loved ones by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Eveleth on June 29, 1936, to John and Mande (Pozega) Wudenich Sr.

She attended Eveleth High School and later married James H. Geary in 1954.

Following his death in 1972, she married Patrick Butala and together they combined their two families into one.

She worked in housekeeping at the Eveleth and Virginia Arrowhead Nursing Homes for several years prior to owning and operating the Wandering Pine in McKinley for eight years.

Patricia was a member of the Gilbert VFW Auxiliary, the Croatian Fraternal Union and was a volunteer at the local food shelf, area nursing homes and hospitals.

She, along with her brother, Bill, served as a caregiver to their sister Cathryn for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Patrick “Pottsie”; daughters, Adelaide (Richard) Rojeski and Suzanne Hill; son, Paul (Angela) Geary; step-children, Patrick and Cheryl Butala; grandchildren, Phillip and Candace Rojeski, Ronald “RJ” (Dawn) Hill, George Hill and Anthony Hill, Ashlie and Taylor Geary, Heidi Akins, Lucas, Lacey, Megan and Tanner Butala; two great-grandchildren; brothers, William Wudenich and her twin brother, Patrick (Judy) Wudinich, Joseph (Sue) Wudinich, Michael (Marlene) Wudinich and Frank (Beverly) Wudinich; sisters, Rose Jacobs and Lucille Skofich; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Geary; parents; sisters, Cathryn Wudenich, Anne Began and Mary Kohler; brothers, Thomas Wudinich and John Wudinich Jr.; and three nephews.
