Walter Krahn
Walter Krahn, 72, of Mt. Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at his home in Mt. Lake.
Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Lake with Rev. Michael Hibbs officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Lake cemetery.
Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Eifert Funeral Home in Mt. Lake and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Walter, son of George G. and Anna (Friesen) Krahn, was born Sept. 19, 1928, at Mt. Lake. He attended school and graduated from Mt. Lake High School in 1946.
On Oct. 8, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Jensen in St. James. Marilyn died in December of 1957.
He married Donna Milbrath on Feb. 27, 1960, in Lakefield. Donna died in October of 1997.
Walter was employed at Land O' Lakes in Mt. Lake, Mt. Lake Creamery, was the owner/operator of Walt's Recreation, drove school bus, and worked for Cenex in Mt. Lake.
He was a member of the Mt. Lake golf course, where he also mowed grass. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church of Mt. Lake.
He enjoyed bowling, watching all sports, coaching girls' softball, umpiring town league baseball, helping at One Way Cafe. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include six children, Pam Wenisch and her husband Clarence Jr. of Morgan, Kevin Krahn and his wife Lisa of Mt. Lake, Dawn Boldt of St. James, Michele Mohlenbrock and her husband, Daryl of Mt. Lake, Brenda Hildebrandt of Mt. Lake, and Lynette Yonker and her husband Jeff of Windom.
Also, 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Colby and her husband, Walter, of Arvada, Colo.; three brothers, Wes Krahn and his wife Ardis of Walker, Willie Krahn and his wife Marlene of Mt. Lake, and George W. Krahn of Cottage Grove.
He was preceded in death by his parents and both wives, Marilyn and Donna.

Ben "Shorty" K. Collins
Ben K. "Shorty" Collins, 76, of Lewisville, died Sunday afternoon, April 8, 2001, at Madelia Hospital in Madelia.
Funeral services was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 10, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville with Rev. Steve Bagnall officiating. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery in Lewisville, with military honors conducted by the Lewisville American Legion Post 561.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Olson Funeral Home of Truman, Minnesota arranged services for the family.
Ben Keith Collins, the son of Harry and Emma (Reed) Collins, was born July 30, 1924, in Ireton, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Ireton, Iowa where he also attended school and graduated from Ireton High School.
Ben served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked as a farm hand for Ted Johnson in LeMars, Iowa, and moved to Minnesota in the late 1940s, where he was employed with August Nagel Tiling.
On Sept. 2, 1950, he was united in marriage to Alice Elaine Nagel at the Methodist church in St. James.
Ben worked during the winter months for various businesses, Glen's Skelgas, the Gambles store, Urban Welding, Ron's U-Save, and he also worked in the hardware store for G.W. Flitter.
He managed the Lewisville Legion Club with his wife, Alice, in the mid-1970s and was the Lewisville village maintenance person before retiring to take care of his wife, Alice.
Ben was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lewisville, where he served on the church board. He was a member of the American Legion for 50 years and served as the village treasurer.
Ben is survived by his wife, Alice Collins of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Truman, formerly of Lewisville; two daughters, Jean Smit and her husband, Steve, of St. James, and Lori Holcomb and her husband, John, of Rosemont.
Seven grandchildren (and one great-grandchild), Kaari Smit of Brainerd and her daughter Kaitlin, Kerri Smit of St. Peter, Kalee Smit of Madelia, Katee Smit and Kacee Smit of St. James, Jenny Holcomb of St. Paul, and Benjamin Holcomb of Rosemount.
He is also survived by three sisters, Carol Alesch of Marcus, Iowa, Bonnie Newberg of Alcester, S.D., Kaye Antrim of Montrose, S.D.; two brothers, Leon Collins of Lake Park, Iowa, and Con Collins of Hawarden, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Dorothy Collins, Mary Fronk and Betty Timmons; and five brothers, Bob, Bruce, Glen, Bill and Dwight Collins.

Van-Anh Lorenz
Van-Anh Lorenz, 32, died on Wed. Aug. 15, 2001 at the home of her parent's in rural Sherburn.
Services were at 11a.m. Sat. Aug. 18, 2001 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Sherburn with Father Charles Quinn as Celebrant. Soloist was Jim Lorenz, organist was Mavis Rohman.
Burial was at the Elm Creek Cemetery.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Fri. at the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Trimont and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Van-Anh, (Von) Thi Lorenz was born May 12, 1969 to Gerald Lorenz and Loan-Anh at Saigon, Vietnam. She was a 1987 graduate of Trimont High School where she was active in band and played the trumpet. Van-Anh then attended and later graduated from Travel School located in Minneapolis.
For the past 11 years she has been employed at American Airlines in Connecticut at the Reservation office and in Minneapolis at the International Airport.
Van-Anh was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Sherburn. She greatly enjoyed traveling all over the United States and most recently traveled to the Dominican Republic, Singapore, Belgium and to various Caribbean Islands.
Surviving Van-Anh are her parents, Gerald and Loan-Anh Lorenz of rural Sherburn; a brother, John Lorenz of Copper Mountain, CO; a sister, Linda Lorenz of Minneapolis; grandparents, Lester and Zeli Lorenz of Trimont; uncles, Jim Lorenz and his wife, Sharon of Trimont and Richard Lorenz and his wife Glenys of New Richland; aunt, Joyce Birdsong and her husband, Ed of Hawaii; five cousins and other relatives and friends.
Van-Anh was preceded in death by her grandfather in Vietnam and other relatives.
Casketbearers were Richard Lorenz, John Hogan, Donald Faber, Jr., Ed Birdsong, Jerrod Simmons, David Faber and John Bishop.

Melvin G. Bean
Melvin G. Bean, 88, of Odin, died on Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at St. James Health Services Hospital.
A service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey with Pastor Patricia Baglien officiating.
Visitation was on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey and also continued for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial was at Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Comfrey.
Melvin was born Jan. 21, 1913 in Selma Twp., Cottonwood Co., to Leon and Minnesota "Minnie" (Parsons) Bean. He attended school in Comfrey and completed one year of high school in Glendale, Calif., while living with his sister.
After school, he farmed and was in the dairy business with his father near Comfrey, and served in the U.S. Army from May 1942 until Sept. 1945 in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
Melvin returned to work in the Comfrey area, and on February 14, 1947 he married DeVera Carlson at Faith Lutheran Church in Comfrey.
In 1957 he and DeVera moved to Mountain Lake, where he was employed with Land O' Lakes until retirement in 1976. In 1980, Melvin and DeVera moved to Odin, to make their retirement home.
Melvin enjoyed playing baseball, and as a young man played in the State Tournament in 1949 with other Comfrey teammates.
He and DeVera also enjoyed camping in northern Minnesota, traveling, fishing, gardening and watching the grandchildren grow and mature. He also liked to read, and as a young man was a member of the Congregational Church in Comfrey.
Melvin was an active member of the National Rifle Association, and the Odin Sportsman Club and Watonwan Game and Fish Club. For many years he was a member of the Comfrey V.F.W., and has been inactive since it's merger with the Butterfield V.F.W.
Melvin is survived by his wife, DeVera of Odin; daughter, Susan and husband, Scott Melheim of St. James; son, David and wife, Stephanie Bean of East Wenatchee, Wash.; three grandchildren, Alexander and Alicia Bean and Victoria Saunders and fiance Trent Overson; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Bean of Albert Lea and Marge Carlson of Comfrey.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Richard and Forrest; and a sister Clarice Kramer.
Casketbearers were David Bean, Lee Bean, Gene Lenning, Trent Overson, Dennis Carlson, Eddie Helferich.
Military honors were conducted by the Comfrey American Legion Post.

Helen M. Augst
Helen Mae Augst, 84, died on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
A service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the World of Pentecost church in St. James with Rev. Lester Lear officiating.
The pianist was Helen Thompson and the vocalists were Helen Thompson, Dona Engelbrecht and Violet Niemeier.
Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Pease Funeral Home.
Burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery in St. James.
Helen was born on May 6, 1917 in St. James to Arthur and Albertina (Carlson) Johnson. She attended school in rural St. James and lived most of her life in the St. James area. She was married to Frank Truman on April 26, 1937 in Mankato. They had five children. She was married to Earl Augst on Nov. 24, 1953 in St. James and they had two children.
Helen had many interests and hobbies including painting, sewing, writing and gardening. She also played many musical instruments and enjoyed singing. She owned and operated a popcorn wagon in Memorial Park in St. James for several years in the 60's and 70's. She was a member of the World of Pentecost Church in St. James and had served as church pianist, taught Sunday School, and was president of the church ladies auxiliary for many years. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary in St. James.
Helen is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Ehret and her husband, Chuck of High Rolls, NM, Nancy Truman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Laura Manney and her husband, Donald of Grafton, ND; four sons, Jerry Truman and his wife, Marge of Annandale, Robert Truman of Sherburn, Richard Truman of Vancouver, British Columbia and Raymond Augst and his wife, Josephine of St. James; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brother Lloyd of Hardy, Ark., sisters, Mildred Zappa of Hudson, Wis. and Rose Brandel of Twenty Nine Palms, CA, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl; infant brother; a brother, Archie and sisters, Florence Nelson and Hulda Firchau.
Pallbearers were Roger Firchau, Chris Firchau, Harlan Firchau, Duane Firchau, David Firchau, Richard Firchau, Milton Thompson, Jerome Thompson and Wesley Carlson.

Joseph Seifert
Joseph Seifert, age 27 of Eden Prairie died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, June 14 . Joe was the son-in-law of Patty Miller of St. James and Patrick Stallman, Rochester.
Joe was a graduate of St. Michael/Albertville High School and St. Cloud State University with a degree in business. He was an All American in track. He had worked at Piper Jaffray since 1998. He is survived by his wife Amy Lea (Stallman), parents Gregory and Marcia Seifert, brother Jason Seifert, uncles Larry (Eileen) Deelstra, Mark (April) Deelstra, aunts Cheryl (Roger) Rowley, Terri (Tom) Luttio, maternal Grandmother Lois Deelstra and by many cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Louis and Dorothy Seifert, his maternal grandfather William Deelstra, and uncle Richard Seifert. Services were held Tuesday June 18 at Riverside Reformed Church in Bloomington MN.
