Johnny Johnson
Johnny Johnson, 82, of St. James, died Thursday, February 5, 2004 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James.
A service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 9, 2004 at First Lutheran Church in St. James with Pastor K. Christian Johnson officiating.
The organist was Cecelia Kulseth and the vocalist was Steve Odegard.
Burial with Military Honors was held at the Albion Lutheran Cemetery in rural St. James.
Visitation was held from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at Pease Funeral Home in St. James.
Johnny was born October 16, 1921 to Ole and Regina (Odegard) Johnson in Winger. He was raised near Winger and baptized at the Norwegian Lutheran Church on November 20, 1921.
Johnny attended rural school. He was confirmed July 12, 1936 at the Albion Lutheran Church in rural St. James. He served in the Army from 1941 until 1945 and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, AK.
Johnny was married to Lucille Hage on March 10, 1950 at the Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. He worked as a carpenter, was engaged in farming, and was employed at the Tony Downs Foods in St. James as a cook. He also worked at Green Giant Foods in St. James and at the rest area east of St. James.
Johnny was a former member of the Albion Lutheran Church and had served on the church board. He was currently a member of the First Lutheran Church in St. James and was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Johnny enjoyed playing cards, fishing, woodworking, and watching sports, especially wrestling.
Johnny became a resident of the Pleasant View Nursing Home in July of 2001.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Lucille; son, David and his wife, Pam of Henrietta, TX; two daughters, Brenda and her husband, Douglas Bertilson of International Falls and Debbie and her husband, Robert Christianson of Ham Lake; two granddaughters, Holly Johnson of Minneapolis and Erica Bertilson of International Falls; two brothers, Elmer and his wife, Pearl of St. James and Clement and his wife, Lila of Madelia; and many nieces and nephews.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Oliver; and two sisters, Alice Flatau and Olga Johnson.
Pallbearers were Dean Johnson, Orlando Johnson, Kenneth Carlson, Jim Hahn, Larry Hopp, and Lynn Hage.

Gladys E. Alexander
Gladys Elvira Alexander, 84, of Rochester, a retired Mayo Clinic employee, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at St. James Hospital in St. James, where she was visiting relatives.
The funeral was at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with Rev. Thomas G. Koelln officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Vine Funeral Home, Rochester, and one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.
Gladys was born June 28, 1916, in St. James. Her parents were Peter and Clara Mork. She was raised on the family farm and attended country schools. She came to Rochester and worked at the Worrall hospital.
On April 27, 1950, she married Bert Alexander in Rochester.
She worked as a desk attendant at the Mayo Clinic for 21 years, retiring in 1981.
She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and enjoyed reading, crocheting and gardening.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Mr. Alexander of Alexander Real Estate and Appraising; one daughter, Judith and husband, William Atkinson of Marietta, Ga.; and two sisters, Lorraine Schute of St. Paul, and Alice Wentzlaff of Butterfield.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials to Mayo Foundation for Heart Research are suggested.

Henry "Pat" R. Smith
Henry "Pat" Ralph Smith died at the age of 85 on Friday, April 6, 2001, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church in St. James with Pastor Judith Nelson officiating. The organist was Risa Carlson and the vocalist was Leroy "Little Pete" Peterson.
Burial with military honors was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, St. James.
Visitation was held on Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. until noon at Pease Funeral Home in St. James.
Henry, son of Glencoe and Bertha (Bingham) Smith, was born on March 17, 1916 at Butterfield. He moved with his family to St. James as a child and attended St. James schools. He worked in carpentry, block and cement work, and also had worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He married Bessie Rogers on Sept. 30, 1934, in Mt. Lake. They lived in St. James following their marriage. Pat served in the Army from 1944 until 1945. He worked as a fireman and a locomotive engineer for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1975.
He was grand marshal of the Railroad Days Parade in 1992.
Pat was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in St. James, the American Legion, the Brotherhood of Fireman and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
He enjoyed being with family and friends, boating, fishing, woodworking, singing, living at the lake and Texas snowbirds.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Bessie; daughters, Patricia Weber and her husband, Keith, of North Mankato, Janice Carlson and her husband, Richard of St. James, and Julie Smith of Garland, Texas.
He is also survived by sons Roger and his wife, Sharon, of Clovis, Calif., and Danny and his wife, Marge, of St. James; daughter-in-law Betty Strong of Gilbert, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ardelle Panzer and her husband, Harold of St. James, and Ruth Schmidt of Plymouth, Iowa.
Also, sister-in-law Joan Smith of St. Paul, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Derald; brothers, Charles and Glen; and a sister, Evelyn Steinle.
Honorary pallbearers were Gordon Roy, John Vetter, Gerald Johnson, Donald Taylor, Robert Dettman, L.D. "Roy" Seely, Jim Sizer, Richard "Dick" Sizer, Bursel Mathistad, and Gerald "Jerry" Nelson.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers were Pat's granddaughters, Jody Carlson, Lisa Menne, Angelia Smith-Brekke, Sharri Major, Tammy Vodvarka and Nytasha Kramer.
Pallbearers were Pat's grandsons, Terry Weber, Todd Weber, Robbe Carlson, Patrick Carlson, Shawn Smith, Travis Smith, Shawn Kramer, Tim Howell, Tory Howell, Mark Smith, Kevin Madigan and Michael Madigan.

Mary E. Osborne
Mary E. Osborne, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Phalen) McMullen, was born May 22, 1909, at Madelia. She died Wed., Aug. 15, 2001, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Mankato. She was 92 years old.
Funeral services were Sat. Aug. 18, 2001, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Madelia with the Rev. Jim Bernig officiating. The organist was Gloria Eager.
Burial was held at Calvary Cemetery.
Mary graduated from St. James High School in 1927. She married Raymond Osborne on Feb. 23, 1931, in Madelia. They made their home and farmed in the Lewisville area, retiring to Madelia in 1961. Ray passed away on April 27, 1978.
Mary loved music and playing piano. She moved to Mankato in 1990, to be near her daughters, and she entered the Hillcrest Healthcare center on Nov. 9, 1999.
Survivors include a son, William Osborne and wife Eva of Fort Worth, TX; five daughters, Marilyn Frederickson of St. Paul, Margie Winch and husband Bill of Mankato, Kay Hippert and husband Daryl of Glenwood, Karen Paulson of Eagle Lake, and Vivian Peyman and husband Daryle of Fairmont; a step-daughter, Clair Klaras of Owatonna; 20 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and seven great-great grand children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Eileen Keenan; a step-son, Eugene Osborn; three grandsons; and four great grandchildren.
Casketbearers were Dean Frederickson, Robert Frederickson, Rick Hippert, Jerry Keenan, Pat Keenan, Raymond Keenan, Steven Keenan, Craig Paulson, Troy Paulson, Kevin Peyman, Randy Peyman, and John Winch.

Lorraine L. Arndt
Lorraine Laux Arndt, 86, Springfield, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on Thursday, Feb. 28 with Father Edward Ardolf officiating.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. There will be a Parish Prayers Service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Burial is at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Lorraine was born on July 15, 1915 in St. James, the daughter of William and Lula (Rice) Johnson. She operated a beauty shop in Sleepy Eye for many years. Lorraine was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye and the St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. She was a past member of the Minnesota State Hairdresser's Association and the Christian Mothers Society.
Lorraine is survived by her daughters, Janice and husband, Roy Dean of Sarasota, Fla. and Audrey and husband James Curran of Phoenix, Ariz; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roman Laux, husband Otto Arndt, and daughter Rosemary Mertz.

Wilfred Lenzen
Wilfred "Bill" Lenzen, 75, died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Lutheran Memorial Home in Madelia.
A service was held at St. James Catholic Church in St. James, on June 12.
Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in St. James.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, June 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, June 12, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James.
Wilfred Michael Lenzen, the son of Henry John and C. Pauline (Pinkelman) Lenzen, was born Sept. 29, 1926, at Sholes, NE. He received his education and grew up in several communities of northeastern NE. In Oct. 1943, he followed in his father's footsteps and was employed at the CNW RR as a clerk in Omaha, NE. He was drafted into the US Army in Nov. 1944, and served during WWII at Camp Roberts and Fort Ord, CA. He was honorably discharged on VJ Day 1945. Bill passed the wire test in Morse Code for telegraphy for the CSt.PM&O RR, and on April 3, 1946, began as a relief agent at Hoskins, NE. After serving as a relief agent in many northeast Nebraska towns, he became full time agent at Winside and Randolph, NE. On July 15, 1949, Bill was united in marriage to Marian Arlene Damme at Randolph. In Oct. 1954, he was appointed to Star Agent in St. James, a division point of the Omaha RR., where he remained until his retirement in 1986 (one week after the June, 9 1986, closing of the depot). He had 43 years of service, Joining a long list of Lenzen family members working on the railroad. He was instrumental in founding the annual St. James Railroad Days, and the Railroad Museum at St. James Lake. He took great pride in furnishing the museum with his personal collection of railroad memorabilia, and many surrounding communities solicited his help related to RR memorabilia in their own exhibits and events. He loved to share his memories and was honored with a Key to the City for his contributions. Wilfred was active in St. James American Legion Post, Knights of Columbus, the 40&8 Veterans in Mankato, CNW Historical Society, St. James Historical Society, CNW Veterans Association, as a Boy Scout Leader, and in Soup Box Derby. After retirement, Wilfred and Marian spent their winters in Florida, until later purchasing a winter home in Yuma, AZ.
Wilfred is survived by his wife, Marian Lenzen of St. James; a daughter, Marla Sherwood and husband, Ed of Evanston, IL; two sons, Michael Lenzen and wife, Judy of Omaha, NE, and Dennis Lenzen of New Ulm, seven grandchildren, Dana, Neil, Natalie, Nathan, Sarah, Megan and Tyler; and a sister, Marilyn McGinnis and husband, Bill of Viera, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Patrick Dean Lenzen; and 2 brothers Wayne and Milton Dean Lenzen.
