Edward J. Maruska
Edward J. Maruska, 81, of New Prague, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2002 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague with interment in church cemetery. Fr. George Freeman will be officiating. Visitation took place on Sunday, from 4-9 p.m. and Monday, one hour prior to the service at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague. Serving as casket bearers were Sean O'Neill, Mike Maruska, Jake Maruska, Andrew Maruska, Geoffrey Henggeler, Matthew Olson, and Eric Olson. Honorary bearers will be Steve Maruska, Josh Maruska, Dan O'Neill, Thomas Henggeler, Nathan Olson, Peter Henggeler, Kevin Olson and Brady O'Neill.
Edward was born on April 28, 1921 in New Prague to Thomas and Mary (Flicek) Maruska. He attended Rural Schools, both in the New Prague Public and Catholic Schools. Edward married Mary Ann Barta on September 25, 1945 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lonsdale. They farmed in Helena Township, Scott County, MN. Edward worked at Midland Glass in Shakopee from 1963-1983 as a mold repairman. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus third and fourth degree, President of the local branch of Catholic Workman, Past President of the State Catholic Workman, American Flint Glass Workers Union Local #133, and a Past Officer of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann of New Prague; sons, Larry and Kristi Maruska of Mankato, Jack and Ann Maruska of Northfield and Paul and Jo Anne Maruska of New Prague; daughters, Pat O'Neill-Scheidt and her husband Bill of New Prague, Barb Maruska and special friend, Scott Werner of Minneapolis, Carol and Arv Olson of New Prague and Margaret and Dave Perry of Iola, Wisconsin. 26 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; son-in-law, John Henggeler of Kansas City, Missouri and daughter-in-law, Ginny Maruska of Orange, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a son, Edd and a daughter, Kathy Henggler.

Bonita Lou Ring
Bonita Lou "Bonnie" (Engel) Ring, 67, of St. James, died Saturday, October 5, 2002, at the St. James Health Services Hospital in St. James.
A service was held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, October 8, at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, with Rev. Donald Crissinger-Clark officiating.
Burial was at Fairview Memorial Park, Fairmont.
Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James.
Bonita was born on August 23, 1935 to William and Vera (Behrmann) Engel in New Ulm. She attended and graduated from Madelia High School. She married Hubert Kizer in 1954. They later divorced. On September 29, 1962 Bonita was united in marriage to Harvey A. Ring in Truman. Bonita enjoyed crocheting, sewing, playing bingo and fishing. She also loved the old time Polka music, dancing and watching the "Band Wagon".
Bonita is survived by one daughter, Mary Ring of New Ulm; five sons, Steven Kizer of Crawfordville, OR, Dean Kizer and his wife Nancy of Sweet Home, OR, Joe Kizer of Cresswell, OR, Martin Ring and Clara Guinn of Comfrey, Leslie Ring of St. James; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois Kaiser of St. Paul, Betty Tiedeken of St. James, Mary Ann Menssen and her husband Donald of St. James; one brother, Ronald Engel and his wife Lois of St. James; a sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson and her husband Lester of Fairmont; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey in August of 1995; and one sister Karen Filizen.

Alice O. Flatau
Alice Olivia Flatau, 93, of St. James, Sunday, August 10, 2003, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James.
A service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at Albion Lutheran Church in rural St. James with Pastor David Webster officiating.
The organist was Kris Cross and the vocalist was Wendy Besel.
Burial was held at the Albion Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Pease Funeral Home in St. James.
Alice was born August 31, 1909, in Brown County to Ole and Regina (Odegard) Johnson. She was raised there and was baptized at the Albion Lutheran Church. She attended school in Brown county and also in Winger where she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Alice married Theodore (Ted) Flatau June 30, 1932 in St. James. Following their marriage, they farmed near Sveadahl, Grogan, and St. James. Mr. Flatau died November 17, 1973.
Alice continued to live on the farm after Ted's death. Later she moved to Bloomington. She had been a resident of the Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James for a short time.
Alice was an associate member of the Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield and a member of the Albion Lutheran Church in rural St. James. She was a homemaker who enjoyed church activities and being with her friends.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Shirley of Richfield; three brothers, Elmer and his wife, Pearl of St. James, Johnny and his wife, Lucille of St. James, and Clement and his wife, Lila of Madelia; and several nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Alvin; daughter, Arleen; brother, Oliver; and sister, Olga.
The pallbearers were Arnie Anderson, Dale Simenson, Doug Bertilson, Dave Johnson, Dean Johnson, and Orlando Johnson.

Emma B. Fastenau
Emma Barbara Fastenau, 88, of St. James, died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James.
A service was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James with Pastor Martin Lopahs officiating.
The organist was Chris Pitcher.
Burial was held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Pease Funeral Home in St. James.
Emma was born May 16, 1915 to John and Daisy (Behrends) DeWall near Mt. Lake. She was raised near Mt. Lake and baptized May 29, 1915 and confirmed May 22, 1932 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mt. Lake.
Emma was married to William H. Fastenau on October 15, 1936 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James. They farmed south of St. James until 1962 when they moved to Escondido, CA. They moved to Riverside, CA then back to Escondido before returning to St. James in 1990.
Emma was an extraordinary cook and worked as a cook at the Crescent Caf/ in St. James for many years. She served as the first cook for hot lunches at St. Paul's Parochial School in St. James and was also the cook at the St. James Hospital. She was well known at the West Side Caf/ in Escondido for her home-style pies.
Emma was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. James. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her family and cooking. Emma also enjoyed raising her family of five children. She gave them selfless love and guidance. When the work was done for the day, Emma enjoyed playing softball with them and taking them fishing. She taught them to have joy in living and giving of themselves.
In August of 2000 Bill and Emma entered the Pleasant View Nursing Home in St. James. Bill died November 25, 2003.
Emma is survived by two sons, Ronald of Casa Grande, AZ and Norman and his wife, Sue of Mankato; two daughters, Karin Bottem of St. James and Janice and her husband, LeRoy Hamilton of Lebanon, OR; son-in-law, Jack Ulrich of New Ulm; 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Sizer of St. James and Gladys Watt of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and many nieces and nephews.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Marlene Ulrich; great-grandchild, David Heldt; son-in-law, Dennis Bottem; five sisters, Minnie, Clara, Kate, Alice, and Ruth; and six brothers, Otto, Bill, John, Ed, Art, and Hank.
Pallbearers were Greg Sizer, Spencer Sizer, Karl Lehman, Alvin DeWall, Elwood Heldt, and Dan Hajek.

Victoria M. Pope
Victoria Mayme Pope died on March 26, 2001, in Mesa, Ariz., at the age of 94.
A memorial service was held in Mesa on March 30. She will be interred in Mt. Hope Cemetery, St. James. Private graveside services will be there.
Victoria was born on May 10, 1906, in St. James, to Thomas and Amy Naylor. She graduated from St. James High School and then worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for many years in St. James, Sioux Falls, and Mankato.
She married Ted Pope in 1938. They lived in Mankato for several years and eventually moved to Santa Ana, Calif., in 1954. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Orange County Water District in Santa Ana for many years.
Ted died in 1987.
Victoria moved to Mesa in 1994, where she resided until her death.
She was very generous to several charities, especially The City of Hope Children's Hospital in Duarte, Calif., and to the Orange County chapter of the Salvation Army.
Victoria is survived by three step-children, Geraldine Johnson of Mesa, Donna Kopeschka of Kokomo, Ind., and Richard Pope of Trimont; and a sister-in-law, Roberta Mueller of Ormsby.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Natalie M. Hultgren
Natalie M. Hultgren, age 9, of Mankato, died from a brain tumor on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato.
A service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 4 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church with Rev. Don Moldstad, Rev. and Rev. Dan Basel officiating.
Visitation was from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
Burial was at Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato.
Natalie Marie Hultgren was born Oct. 16, 1992 in Mankato to Rick and LuAnn (Hoffman) Hultgren. She received her preschool training at Golden Heart and Jesus Lambs Daycare. She began kindergarten at Mount Olive Lutheran School in Mankato in 1997. She was currently a student of the third grade class. Natalie was also a member of the children's choir and of Mount Olive Lutheran Church.
Natalie found joy being with her friends, attending school, and doing artwork. She enjoyed going to the Humane Society shelter and visiting the Good Counsel gift shop. She loved Jesus, strawberries, stickers collecting Beanie Babies and being read to.
Natalie is survived by her parents, Rick and LuAnn Hultgren, her brother, Michael Hultgren all of Mankato; grandparents, Donald Hoffman of Mankato, Evelyn Hoffman of Mankato, Harland and Lois Hultgren of St. James; aunts and uncles, Karen Hoffman of Mankato, Dean and Lora Hultgren of Bloomington, Bruce and Diane Hultgren of St. James, Jerry and Jeanie Hultgren of Brandon, SD, David and Nancy Cassin of Chaska, Allan Hultgren and Diane Quick of Billings, Mont.; cousins; her dog, Tosha and her cat, Dimitri.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents.

Donald C. Erickson
Donald Carl Erickson, 72, died on Friday, August 16, 2002, at the Worthington Regional Hospital.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial was in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation was held on Tuesday, August 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
Donald was born on March 30, 1930, in Madelia, the son of Henry and Naemi Noren Erickson. He graduated from St. James High School in 1948 and farmed with his father. Don married Joan Larson on October 5, 1951, in Worthington. After their marriage, they lived on the home place for ten years. They moved to Worthington, where Donald worked as a salesman for Rickbeils for twenty-five years. His hobbies included sewing machine and mechanical clock repair, as a business out of his home. Don also enjoyed radio controlled model airplanes and Ham radios. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, serving on the council, in the church choir, and being a Sunday school teacher. Don also served on the Airport Commission and was a voting judge for several years. He was a member of the Ham Club, the Model Airplane Club, Worthington Amateur Radio Club, and Southwest High Flyers Club.
Don is survived by his wife, Joan, of Worthington; two sons, David Erickson, and his wife, Terry, of Missoula, Montana, and Daniel Erickson, and his wife, Cynthia, of Brooklyn Park; one daughter, Barbara Van Langen, and her husband, Michael, of Jacksonville, Florida; eight grandchildren, Keith, Kristin, and Ryan Erickson, Matthew Van Langen, and Kayla, Heather, Mara, and Nathan Erickson, and one sister, Norma Wellnitz, and her husband, Marvin, of St. James. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Carol Kraft.
Casketbearers will be Brian, Bruce, and Bill Beck, and Jon, James, and Joel Wellnitz.
