Marion L. Anderson Lax
Marion L. Anderson Lax of Duluth died Thursday Jan. 16, 2003, in Chris Jensen Health Center. She was 67.

Marion was born in 1935 to Walter and Pearl Janzig in Duluth. She was a member of the Adolph Mission Circle, attended Augustana Lutheran Church and retired from the Target store in Duluth.

She is survived by a daughter Linda (Dale) Reno of Hermantown, sons Kent (Jackie) Anderson of Hermantown and David Anderson of Pike Lake, a brother Edward (Eileen) Janzig of Cloquet, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a special friend Harold Wolff of Duluth.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Alice I. Sather
Services were held for Alice I. Sather of Proctor. She died Tues., Jan. 7, 2003 in a Duluth Hospice.

She was born Dec. 6, 1925, to Martin and Pauline (Thompson) Steen in Duluth. Alice fought her battle with Alzheimer's disease with dignity. She had worked at Nopeming Sanitarium.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Gordon, daughters Bonnie (Dale) Kinnunen of Esko and Cheri (Steve) Benjaminson of Duluth; sons David (Bette) of Port Washington, Wis., Tom of Savannah, Ga. and Steve of Cloquet, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, brothers Carl Steen of Lavonia, Mich., Dick of Phoenix, Ariz., Denny (Betty) of Duluth, and a sister Marylou (Tim) Birman of Saginaw, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown.

Roy E. Lindberg
Services were held Tues. for Roy E. Lindberg, 59, of Proctor, who died Fri., Jan. 31, 2003 in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born on July 15, 1943 to Roy and Martha Lindberg in Duluth. Roy graduated from Denfeld High School and earned his Bachelors Degree in teaching from UMD. Roy married Sharon Laney on July 27, 1963 in Duluth. Roy worked for Applebaum-Target Grocery Department for 15 years, taught at Hermantown Junior High School, Superior East Junior High School and retired after 18 years of teaching Math at Luck High School in Luck, Wisc.

He attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Evelyn Lindberg, and a grandson, Christopher Lindberg.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Pam (Steve) Levings of Proctor; a son, Roy Jr. (Deanna) of Proctor; a sister, Judy (Bob) Kozarek of Apollo, PA; grandchildren, Emily, Kristine and Alaina Levings, and Hannah Lindberg, all of Proctor. Nieces, Jesse and Katrina. He loved spending time with his family, the ocean, camping and his dog, Katie.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery with arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Winfield S. 'Win' Thorson
Services will be held today (Thurs., Feb. 6) for Winfield S. 'Win' Thorson of Proctor. He died Mon., Feb. 3, 2003, in Lake Haven Manor. He was 88.

The former Proctor School District bus driver and maintenance department employee was born Jan. 21, 1915 to Peter and Alice Thorson in Duluth. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1935 and married Jennie Mareski in 1945. He worked for the Walter Butler Shipyards during WW II, was a self employed plasterer, learning the trade from his father. 'Win' retired from the Proctor School District in 1977. He was a member of Trinity Masonic Lodge #282 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Duluth, Aad Temple Shrine and West Duluth Moose #1478.

He is survived by his wife Jennie, daughters Gwen Thorson of Proctor and Gail (Charles) Vukad of Hayward, Wis., and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 10 until the 11 a.m. services today (Thurs.) in Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. West Duluth.

Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers.

LaVerne L. Taylor
Services were held last week for LaVerne L. Taylor who died Mon., Jan. 27 in her son's Duluth residence. She was 77.

The Munger Shaw Rd. resident was born in Duluth. LaVerne married George Taylor in 1943 in Duluth. She was a lifelong member of the Apostolic Gospel Church. LaVerne was also a member of the Solway Senior Citizens Club.

LaVerne is survived by her husband of 59 years George, sons Brett (Theresa) of Duluth, Curtis (Burnell) of Lake Charles, La., Craig (Susan) of Lorain, Ohio, and Rev. Scott (Martha) of Duluth, 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sisters Eunice Huseby of Duluth and Jewel Mauer of Wayzata,, Minn., and many other nieces, nephews and 'adopted' grandchildren.

Burial was in Solway Township Cemetery.

Dorothy Mae (Shannon) Hannan
Dorothy Mae (Shannon) Hannan of Proctor died Mon., Jan. 27, 2003. She was 88.

She was born in Duluth and had attended Central High School. She worked for many years for Bell Telephone Co. She married Luke Hannan in 1945 and moved to Proctor where she had resided for the past 57 years. She was an active member of Forbes United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers a sister and her husband Luke.

Survivors include daughters Kathleen Hannan (Robert Wilke), Maureen (Harold Robinson and Sally Hannan, sons Jerome (Melanie) Hannan and James (Cathy) Hannan, ten grandchildren and good friend Lewis Perry.

Burial was in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Edna Victoria Swanson
Edna Victoria Swanson, 87, longtime Proctor resident, died Sat., Feb. 1, 2002, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

Edna was born in Mahtowa, to Peter and Hulda (Nelson) Freed and came to Proctor at an early age. She graduated from Proctor High School in 1935. She worked for Proctor High School and the Proctor Post office. Edna was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Erling. Surviving is a brother, Wilbur (Winifred) Freed of Duluth.

Burial was in the Augustana Lutheran Church Cemetery in Midway Township.

Janet J. Willeck
Janet J. Willeck of Saginaw died Thurs., Jan. 30, 2003 in Fairview University Med-ical Center, Minneapolis. She was 66.

She was born in 1937 in Duluth to Albin and Edna (Forsell) Kohs. Janet worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for St. Louis County for 28 years until she retired. She enjoyed when her grandchildren stayed over, the Friday 13th Gang get-together, her church friends, lunch outings, and gal pal Shirley. She was involved with the women's 4-H Camp. She enjoyed her weekend retreats with her best friend of 50 years, her husband Robert.

Janet was preceded in death by her father Albin.

She is survived by her husband Robert of Saginaw, sons Keith of Saginaw, Randall 'Randy' (Beverly 'Bev') of Brookston, and Jamie (Bonnie) of Eden Prairie, her mother Edna Kohs of Saginaw, sister Gloria (Chet) Hanson of Saginaw, brothers Kenneth (Betty) Kohs of Saginaw, Lyle (Barb) Kohs of Bozeman, Mont., and four grandchildren.

Interment was at Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrange-ments were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Paul M. Rossberg
Paul M. Rossberg of Puyallup, Wash., passed away Sat., Jan. 18, 2003, at his home. He was 95.

He was born in Ferlock, S.D. Before retirement he worked as a cabinet maker, building both wood and metal caskets.

Paul is survived by his wife Gladys E. (Zebott) Rossberg of Puyallup, sons Clio N. (Marie) Rossberg of Vancouver, Wash., and Del (Mo) Rossberg of Kirkland, Wash., sisters Emma Houard of Waterloo, Ia., and Martha Sawyer of Center Point, Ia., a brother Alvin Rossberg of St. Cloud, Minn., two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Bruce Everett Rapp
Bruce Everett Rapp, who directed Proctor's Community Band for a decade, died Sat., Feb. 8, 2003 in his Duluth home. He was 78.

His life was so filled with the power of music he couldn't envision his death without it. He had requested those attending his service yesterday to bring their instruments to share in farewell music.

Bruce was born in Chisholm to Victor and Fay (Ladin) Rapp. He was a graduate of UMD with a music degree. He served his country in WW II in the European Theater with the Timber Wolf 104th Division. He was a member of various groups throughout Duluth, among them the Duluth Musicians Association Local 18, AAD Temple Shrine, Trinity Masonic Temple AF & AM, VFW Post #137, the 'Buckhorns', and a member of the Duluth Rotary Club where he had perfect attendance for 44 years. Bruce loved to travel, was a sport car enthusiast, and a beautiful craftsman. He organized and performed with a variety of musical groups over the years.

He is survived by his loving wife Patricia of Duluth, sons Gregory B. (Cindi) of Plantation, Fla., Jeffrey B. (Linda) M.D., Brian V. (Karen), all of Duluth, daughter Jennifer L. Rapp of Duluth, and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Brian Kenneth Harnell
Services will be held today, Thursday, for Brian Kenneth Harnell of Saginaw. He died Sun., Feb. 16, 2003, from injuries he received in an automobile accident in Duluth. He was 21.

The Industrial Road resident was born in Duluth and had been a lifelong Twig/Saginaw resident. Brian was a maintenance employee of Grand Lake Township and had worked at the Hermantown Wal-Mart. He had participated in cross country at Proctor High School and played hockey for the Twig and Proctor Hockey Assoc-iations. Brian was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig, where he was both baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed hunting and music of all kinds.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Russell and Lillian Harnell, maternal grandfather Richard W. Dahlen, and super dog Aspen.

Survivors include his parents Kenneth Harnell of Saginaw and Cindy Dahlen of Proctor, sisters Terri Harnell of Duluth, Angie (Vince) Harnell-Herrera of Calif., Kristy Robertson of Pike Lake, Victoria Robertson (fiancee Josh Kragthorpe) of Bemidji and Tina (Travis) Chadwick of Duluth, three nephews, his maternal grandmother Carol A. Dahlen of Duluth, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service today in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig. Pastor Larry Anderson officiating. Inurnment will be at Grand Lake Cemetery in Twig. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.
