Alyce Ruikka

Funeral services were held for Alyce Ruikka on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minnesota with Pastor Don Salo officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Janet Tumberg. The pallbearers were Scott Juvrud, Brian Juvrud, Marlin Hammje, Mike Juvrud, Aaron Juvrud and Adam Juvrud. The honorary pallbearers were Leo Barthel, Howard Ojala, William Wiliman and Tom Nilsson.

Alyce was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills, Minnesota.

Alyce Cora Ruikka was born August 4, 1921 in New York Mills, Minnesota, the daughter of Fred and Martha (Walimaa) Mattila.

On October 1, 1938 Alyce was united in marriage with Ahto Ruikka in Sisseton, South Dakota.

Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Janice.

Alyce worked as a nursing assistant and physical therapist for several years at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham, Minnesota.

She also worked at the Elder's Home in New York Mills as a housekeeper for 14 years.

For most of her life Alyce has lived in rural New York Mills.

She was very creative and enjoyed knitting, quilting, ceramics and Finnish and Sami History.

Alyce was actively involved at the Finn Creek Museum, New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, Senior Art & Crafts Center and many other community projects.

She was also a member of the Minnesota/Finnish Historical Society.

She had a very special relationship with her grandchildren (and they loved her).

Alyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ahto; daughter, Janice "Bunny" Paavola and grandson, Mark Juvrud.

Alyce is survived by her brother Marlin (Ruby) Hammje of Mason City, Iowa; sister Marion Jean McKeen and her two sons: John and Kenny of Hanford, California; grandchildren: Scott Juvrud of Cambridge; Brian (Kathy) Juvrud and their son, Tyler of Osceola, Wisconsin; granddaughter-in-law, Lorraine Juvrud of Glenwood and her sons: Michael of St. Paul and Aaron and Adam of Glenwood; uncle, William Waliman of Wadena; 6 sister-in-laws: Mim Saarela, Imbi Johnston and Ina Persons all of New York Mills, Florence Ruikka of Battle Lake, Pauline Ruikka and Betty Ruikka both of Minneapolis; brother-in-laws: Einar Saarela of New York Mills and Woodrow (Audrey) Ruikka of Redondo Beach, California; many cousins, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills, Minnesota.

Walter Harrom

Funeral services for Walter Harrom will be held on Thursday, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran church in Dent, MN with Rev. Larry Schmidt officiating.

Walter passed away on Sunday, May 30 at Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN.

Walter was born February 2, 1917 in Center, Nebraska.

He was the son of Ole and Amanda Hirshland Harrom.

He grew up and worked in that area until the start of World War II.

He served in the Army as a Corporal.

Walter married Lillian Halverson on June 9, 1945 in Hastings, Nebraska.

They farmed in Winnetoon, NE until moving to Minnesota in 1958 and farmed in the Star Lake area near Dent, Minnesota for 39 years.

Walter loved his family and friends, his land, horses and square dancing.

Walter is survived by his wife, Lillian, Dent, MN, 2 sons: Mark (Mary) of Breckenridge, MN; Kenneth of Dent, MN; one daughter, Carol (Mike) McIlvain of Dent, MN; two brothers: Ole (Esther) of Northfolk, Nebraska; Louis (Marcella) Redding, CA.; 5 sisters: Ann Hintz of Northfield, Nebraska; Martha Collins of Scottsbluf, Nebraska; Betty Carlson of Sacremento, CA; Edna Harrom of Kansas City, MO; Mrs. Marvin (Violet) Becker of Lower Lake, CA; 5 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Mabel M. Billington

1911-2003

Thursday, the 4th of December 2003, at the age of 92 years: Mable M. Billington was released from her trials here on earth - a life long commitment to family, friends, and community.

On this day we celebrate her passing into the hands of her loving Lord and Savior - Jesus Christ.

Mabel was born on January 26, 1911 to John and Wilhelmina "Minnie/Ida" (Mattson) Carlund, in Otto Township, Ottertail County, Minnesota.

On June 6th of 1928, Mabel married Lester Gail Billington.

During their 53 years of marriage they raised five children: Lester, Kenny, Gary, Carole, and Judith; and operated several dairy farms in the New York Mills and Deer Creek areas.

Mabel also worked at the New York Mills Co-Operative as a sales person for many years.

In 1979, they retired to their present home in Wadena.

During her life, Mabel was a giving member of her community, she was active at her church; she was a member of the Elmer Goche VFW Post Auxiliary #3922 of Wadena, the Wadena Historical Society, and enjoyed countless hours as a Pink Lady for the Tri-County Hospital.

Mabel lived a long and healthy life - she passed away after a brief period of illness at the Tri-County Hospital.

She is survived by her loving daughters: Carole Grebel of Dunedin, FL and Judith Clark of Maple Grove, MN.

She was delighted by her blessing of eighteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren - as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three sons: Lester, Kenny and Gary; granddaughter Nancy Grebel; brothers; Harry, Reuben, Fritz, Ernest, Bill and Melvin Carlund; and sisters, Esther Niemela and Frances Gross.

During her last years, she was lovingly befriended by many caring people in Wadena.

Funeral services were held on December 8, 2003 at the Wadena Evangelical Church with Pastor Phil Schrauben officiating.

Burial was in the Wadena Cemetery with Bielema Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were: Scott, Bradley, Mark and Steven Billington, Ryan and Rachel Clark.

Honorary pallbearers were: Daniel Billington and James Baron.

James Gilbert Herr

1952-2003

James Gilbert Herr, age 51 of Menahga died at home on Saturday, December 6, 2003.

James was born on April 14, 1952 in Perham, MN to Gilbert & Carol (Kampsula) Herr.

He was united in marriage to Myong Suk Ko on February 22, 1978 in Seoul, South Korea.

James served in the US Navy from 1970-1974.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and National Rifle Association.

James was employed by Lamb Weston/ConAgra in Park Rapids as chief boiler engineer.

James has lived 11 years in the Menahga community and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving James are his wife, Myong; mother, Carol Lassila; daughter, Suzanne Marie of Minneapolis, MN; brothers Jack (Judy) of New York Mills, Joel (Cathy) of Winona, MN, David (Melanie) of Elgin, ND; sisters Cindy of Hutchinson, MN and Rebecca (Richard) Trosen of Bertha, MN.

Additional survivors are his father & mother in law, Mr. & Mrs. Hwa Young Ko and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles & cousins.

Preceding James in death was his father Gilbert, twin brother Joseph Robert on April 14, 1952 and grandparents Jack & Esther Kampsula and Emily Herr.

Services were held on Wednesday, December 10th at Wadena Evangelical Church with Rev. Phillip Schrauben officiating.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, New York Mills.

Pallbearers were: Brian Kampsula, Jacob Trosen, Kyle Herr, John Pesola, Terry Howell, and Steve Hage.

Honorary Pallbearers included: Cynthia Herr, Jack Herr, Joel Herr, David Herr and Rebecca Trosen.

Military Honors were provided by MN National Guard Co. A - 194th Armored Division.

Veryl Kehus

1920-2003

Veryl (Petersen) Kehus passed away on November 17, 2003 at the age of 83.

She was the eldest child of Harry and Leona Petersen.

She graduated from New York Mills High School in 1939.

She and Eino lived in Renton, WA and raised their five children.

He preceded her in death in March, 1992.

Memorial services were led by her son, Pastor Alan Kehus amongst family and friends.

Surviving Veryl in New York Mills are brother Orin Petersen, sister Jean Koehler, sister-in-law Sadie Isrealson and many other relatives and friends.
