Florence Krajewski
Robert Krajewski of Proctor is mourning the loss of his mother Florence Krajewski of Duluth. She died Sat., Mar. 29, 2003, in Viewcrest Health Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 89.

Florence was born in Duluth. She had worked for Elliot's Meat Company in Duluth. She was a lifelong member of Holy Family Parish and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Florence is also survived by her sons Walter (Nancy) of Racine, Wis., and Lawrence (Susan) of St. Charles, Mo., ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment was at the Polish Cemetery.

David D. Gibbens
Proctor Community Band Director Tracey Gibbens of Duluth is mourning the death of his father David D. Gibbens. He died Mon., Mar. 24, 2003. He was 83.

David was a longtime resident of Duluth and former resident of Virginia. He was a 1942 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He served in the Navy during WW II. David was a retired mining engineer, working 41 years for Oliver Iron Mining and U.S. Steel. He played an active role in the development of the Minntac taconite mine in Mountain Iron and several natural ore mines on Minnesota's Iron Range. He was a life member of the Virginia Masonic Lodge and a member of the Gitche Gumee Kiwanis Club in Duluth.

He is also survived by his wife Marjorie, three other children, eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Helen P. (Haugland) Audette
Helen P. (Haugland) Audette, who along with her two sisters, were honored as Hoghead's Grand Marshals in 2001 for their community activism, died Sat., April 5, 2003 in Duluth. She was 79.

She was born in Proctor, raised here and graduated from its schools. Her roots in Proctor run deep, Helen's stepfather and grandfather were both conductors on the DM&IR.

Along with her husband Bud Haugland, she was active in many Proctor organizations. Helen was past Grand Marshal for the Hoghead Festival, she was an original founder of the Proctor Independence Day Association, where she wrote and produced two plays to support Independence Day and youth activities.

She was involved in the planning of the first Winter Carnival and the building of the Proctor Arena. She was active with the Proctor Civic and Commercial Associa-tion. She and Bud built and operated Proctor's first motel, and opened the Holiday station store, where it was the first major franchise operation in the area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Maude Schultz; two sisters, Ruth Nelson and Rose Haga; and her husband, Arley J. 'Bud' Haugland in 1981.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice (Ray) LeSarge of Hermantown and Vickie Haugland (Guy Ross) of Duluth; two sons, John (Lila) of Hermantown and Raymond (Yvonne) of Burnsville; a sister, Dorothy Neault of Proctor; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Leonard 'Bud' Frank Anderson, Jr.
Leonard 'Bud' Frank Anderson, Jr. of Duluth died Wed., Mar. 26, 2003, in Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz. His wife and children were with him. He was 76.

Bud resided in Duluth, and was a 'snowbird' in Arizona for the past seven years. He was a Navy veteran during WW II aboard the USS Collingsworth. He worked as a market manager and meatcutter for 40 years at various companies until his retirement from Jubilee Foods. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #137, Linwood Lake Association, Foresters, and a board member of the Happy Time Day Care Center.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Delores, sons Leonard (Susan), III and David, daughter Nancy (Larry) Thomas, all of Duluth, a sister, a brother, three sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Entombment was at Sunrise Memorial Park.

Joy Emanuel Westlund
Joy Emanuel Westlund of Saginaw died at home on Fri., Apr. 4, 2003. He was 93.

Joy was born in Spokane, Wash. in 1909. He was named after the joy of Christ and the promise of Emanuel. He married Martha Wickstrom in 1937. During WW II, Joy was instrumental in the construction of the Alaskan Highway. After the war he was an operator of heavy equipment, working on major dams and construction projects that helped lead us out of post WW II. Joy was a member of Twig Bethlehem Lutheran Church and several organizations, including the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shriners and Local 49 of Operating Engineers.

He is survived by his wife Martha, daughter Diane Tiseth of Naples, Fla., sons Gary of Dillon, Colo., Terry (Sandy) of St. Louis, Mo., and Tim (Lori) of Saginaw, four grandchildren, a sister, a nephew and niece and many other relatives and friends.

Inurnment will be at Grand Lake Cemetery, Twig, at a later date. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Ida Dincau
Ray Dincau of Proctor is mourning the loss of his mother Ida Dincau. The resident of Lake Haven Manor died Apr. 1, 2003 in Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul. She was 88.

Ida was born in Duluth. She was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church and the Slovenian Women's Union Branch #33, and the Gary New Duluth Community Center.

She is also survived by another son Ron 'Rocky' (Barbara) of Ventura, Calif., a daughter Bonita McKean of Duluth, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Richard Blair Halverson
Lois Nettleton of Proctor is mourning the loss of her brother Richard Blair Halverson. He succumbed to cancer Fri., Apr. 4, 2003.

Richard was born in Brainerd Feb. 10, 1921. He graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd. From 1943-1946, he served as a pilot in fighter aircraft in the Army Air Corps, and later as a B-29 Flight Engineer. In 1944 he married his high school sweetheart Elaine Schwindeman in Alabama. After WW II, they moved to Duluth. He trained as a sheet metal journeyman and mostly worked for A.G. O'Brien Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 1984. Richard and Elaine enjoyed square dancing and were involved in the Duluth Area Square Dance Federation and 'Shindig' for many years. Richard also liked woodworking, and in recent years he became a computer aficionado.

Richard is also survived by his wife of 59 years Elaine, six children, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a brother, and a sister-in-law.

Dorothy Elizabeth (McIntire) Lang
James McIntire of Proctor is mourning the death of his sister Dorothy Elizabeth (McIntire) Lang. She died Sat., Mar. 29, 2003.

Dorothy was born on the family farm at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 10, 1919, to Henry Otis and Tressie McIntire. She was the granddaughter of John and Minnie McIntire, with whom N.P. Junction (Carlton) was built and the granddaughter of August and Elizabeth Peacha, as written about in the 'Pillars of Society'.

She is also survived by nine children, three sisters, 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was at New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.

Edna Mae Jahr
Donald Jahr of Proctor is saddened by the loss of his mother Edna Mae Jahr of Duluth. She died Fri., Apr. 4, 2003, at her home. She was 85.

Edna was born in Kentucky. She received her B.S. Degree from the University of Kentucky and taught elementary and high school there for eight years before moving to Duluth in 1945. Edna was a member of Lincoln Park Baptist Church. She worked 20 years for St. Louis County Social Services as a Homemaker Home Health Aide Coordinator, retiring in 1985.

Survivors also include another son, two daughters, 11 grandchildren, and two sisters.

Burial was at Union Cemetery.

Terra Linda Bishop-Lind
Terra Linda Bishop-Lind "Neezhoqah-bahweekway", of Clay Street, died Sun., Apr. 13, 2003, in her home after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. She was 37.

Terra was born in Mountain View, Calif., to Darwin and Lynn (Downs) Bishop, and was a long-time Duluth resident. She graduated from Proctor High School in 1983, and received her master's degree in social work from UMD. She worked for the Arrowhead Juvenile Center, Prince William County, Virginia Social Services, Attic Correctional Services of LaCrosse, Wis., Douglas County Parole and Probation, and the Fond du Lac Social Services. Terra was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church in Proctor and its Leah Circle, Proctor PTA, the Duluth Junior League and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

Terra is survived by her husband Todd S., whom she married Sept. 30, 1989, in Proctor, sons TJ and Teran, at home, brothers Guy (Kristi) Bishop and Dean (Kim) Bishop of Duluth, her parents Darwin and Lynn Bishop of Duluth, in-laws Steve (Kathy) Lind of Mahtowa and Lance (Shelly) Lind of Barnum, four nephews and nieces, and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Marion L. Abbott
Marion L. Abbott, nee Wombacher, of Flossmoor, Ill., formerly of Proctor, passed away Apr. 8, 2003. She was 88.

She was born in Proctor May 27, 1914, to the late Katherine and Henry Wombacher. She graduated from Proctor High School and the Duluth State Teachers College (UMD), and taught elementary education in Cloquet. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist, Flossmoor Service League, Infant Welfare Society, Easter Seal Society and the Flossmoor Country Club.

Marion is survived by her daughters Katherine Frances (George) Soukup of Greenwood, Ind. and Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) Alles of Ivanhoe, Ill., three grandchildren, and her sister Lorraine Caron of Duluth.

Entombment was in the Garden Altar of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist.

James H. 'Big Wally' Waldhalm
Gerald Waldholm of Proctor is mourning the death of his brother James H. 'Big Wally' Waldhalm of Sturgeon Lake. He died Thurs., Apr. 10, 2003 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. He was 70.

Jim was born in Tintah, Minn. and grew up in the Tintah/Elbow Lake area farming with his family. In 1950, he moved to Duluth where he worked for the water and gas department and a local railroad. He was a natural entrepreneur and became involved in several businesses including Earthmovers of Duluth and R & G Waldhalm Contracting.

Jim is also survived by his wife of 47 years Elizabeth, sons Jimmy and Rick (Janell), both of Moose Lake, and Greg (Gail) and JJ (Kelly), both of Sturgeon Lake, ten grandchildren, a great-grandson, two sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Blomskog Cemetery, Windemere Twp., Pine Co.
