Arthur R. Gottsch

Arthur Raymond Gottsch, age 56, a resident of Deephaven, MN, died March 2, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were conducted by Mount Calvary Lutheran Church of Excelsior. Burial was in the Dykeman Cemetery of Brainerd.

Arthur was born June 25, 1940, in Emerson, NE to Frank Raymond and Edna Mae (Imm) Gottsch. He was a mechanical technician in the generator engine business.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; a daughter, JoAnn Lewis, Hopkins, MN; two sons, John Gottsch of Anoka, MN and Lance Gottsch, Excelsior, MN; two grandchildren; his mother, of Brainerd; five sisters, Shirley Moody and Alice Baker, both of Brainerd, Betty Waller of Clarkfield, MN, Mabel Brown of Missouri, and Edith Arnold, Montrose; and two brothers, Harry Gottsch and Steven Gottsch, both of Brainerd. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Frank R. Gottsch, Jr.

Marie M. Schraut

Marie M. Schraut, age 79, a resident of Pierz, MN, died March 3, 1997 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held March 6 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Marie M. Schraut was born July 18, 1917 in Little Falls, to the late Henry and Odilia ‘Tillie’ (VanHercke) Meyer. The family moved to a farm North of Pierz where Marie grew up and attended country school. She then attended the Little Falls High School. After completing her schooling, Marie worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Minneapolis and then worked as a housekeeper. She was united in marriage to Leo M. Schraut on April 15, 1941 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. The couple farmed near Royalton for a few years until relocating to a farm in Hillman Township, East of Pierz, where she lived the rest of her life. Marie enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, reading, and most of all, her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.

Survivors include her sons, Allen E. Schraut of Hillman, Marvin L. Schraut of Pierz and Melvin A. Schraut of Pierz; brother, Earl Meyer and wife Regina of Pierz; sisters, Evelyn Will of Lastrup, MN and Irene Bushman of Waukesha, WI and five grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Leo M. Schraut on May 27, 1968.

Pallbearers were Christy and Brian Schraut, Dennis Meyer, Donald Will, Steve Schraut, Jeffrey Schraut, and Daniel Schraut.

Alice C. Holden

Alice C. Holden, age 91, a resident of the Mille Lacs Nursing Home, formerly of the Freedhem, MN, area, passed away March 12, 1997, at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home in Onamia, MN.

Funeral services will be held March 16 at the Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz, MN, with the Rev. Wayne Peterson officiating. Burial wwill be in the Freedhem Cemetery.

Alice Holden was born December 20, 1905 in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Nicholas and Elizabeth Asmussen. She grew up in central Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Hans Olson, he later died. She married John Seelen, he later died. On May 23, 1936 she was united in marriage to Oscar Holden in Freedhem. After their marriage the couple dedicated their lives to raising 12 children and farming in Freedhem until 1979 when they retired.

Survivors include sons: Harley Holden and wife Linda of Bismark, ND, James Seelen and wife Rita of St. Cloud, M N, John Seelen and wife Herta of Rockville, MN, Nels Olson and companion Darlene of Coeur D’Alene, ID; daughters: Phyllis Hoskins of Hillman, MN, Pat Bandimere and husband Bill of Bonner, MT, Joyce Singleton and husband Eugene of Chisholm, MN, Shirley Stutzman and husband Donald of New Paris, IN, Marilyn Edwards and husband Harold of Chetek, WI, Beverly Setterstrom and husband Eugene of Eden Prairie, MN, 52 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her three husbands; son, Bill Olson, daughter, Delda Poland, brothers, Walter, Ray and Carl Asmussen, sisters, Katie Seelen and Elizabeth Asmussen and three grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Gene Singleton, Gene Setterstrom, Don Stutzman, Harold Edwards, Tad Hoskins, Paul Bandimere and Paul Braswell.

Julia Trettel

Julia Trettel, age 96, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 8, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services were held March 11 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Bowlus, MN.

Julia was born in Swan River Township on June 17,1900, to Anton and Mary (Lyschik) Krystoek. She was united in marriage to Peter Trettel on April 26, 1920, in Bowlus, MN.

Survivors include her sons, George and wife June of Elmdale, MN; Lawrence and wife Rita of Royalton, MN; a daughter, Agnes Burton and husband Joe of Cloquet, MN; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Trettel of Little Falls; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter; son, Joe; 2 brothers and 4 sisters; and 2 grandchildren.

Casketbearers were James, Kenneth, David, Marvin, John, Mark, and Bill Trettel, and Clarence Kedrowski.

Rosemary Popp

Rosemary Popp, age 63, a resident of Royalton, MN, died February 28, 1997, in Germany.

Mass of Christian Burial was held March 10 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton with Father Laurn Virnig officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Rosemary was born in Buckman, MN, on May 9, 1933, to Frederick and Philomenia (Dengel) Heurung. The family moved to Little Falls, MN, where Rosemary attended Our Lady of Lourdes School. She was united in marriage to Joseph Popp on August 6, 1951, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls.

Survivors include her husband, Joe of Royalton; sons, Jerome Popp, wife Barbara and family of Bowman, ND; Daniel Popp, wife Lori and family of St. Cloud, MN;Michael Popp, wife Bunny and family of St. Cloud; David Popp, wife Annette and family of New Brighton, MN; daughters, Mary Popp and her life partner, Nancy Stacken, both of Pine City; Barbara Black, husband Bob and family of Mahnomen, MN; Patricia Miller, husband Gerald and family of Aitkin, MN; Linda Justen, husband Gene and family of Georgia; Brenda Hackett, husband Keith and family of Rice, MN; Judy Hackett, husband Shawn and family of Becker, MN; brothers, Frederick Heurung of Minneapolis, Albert Heurung of St. Cloud, Victor and Robert Heurung both of Little Falls; sisters, Geraldine Lahti and Dorothy Kessler, both of Minneapolis; Florence Piekarski of Little Falls; Judy Anderson of St. James, MN; and Beverly Waddell of Delano; and 23 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Annette Rose Popp; Mike and Bunny’s son, Daniel; a brother Roland Heurung; and 2 sisters, Evelyn Rudolph and Louise Doble.

Casketbearers were Brian Black, Chris Popp, Grant Popp, Ricky Huerung, Sonny Anderson and Jeff Kessler.

Virginia Krengel

Virginia Irene Krengel, age 67, formerly of Little Falls, MN, died March 15, 1997, at the Wedgewood Health Care Center in Inver Grove Heights, MN.

Funeral services were held May 20 at Kok Funeral Home-Cottage Grove Chapel. Interment was in the National Cemetery.

Virginia was born May 14, 1929, at Little Falls, MN, to John A. and Mabel (Nelson) Johnson. She grew up in Little Falls where she graduated from high school. She married Duayne Krengel. Duayne served in the U.S. Air Force and the couple served in several locations including overseas.

Survivors include daughters, Debra VanBogart and husband Michael of Cottage Grove, MN, Jackie Aschittino and husband Brad of Oakdale, MN, and Shaune O’Bryan and husband Allen of Rochester, MN; grandsons, Angelo, Chad and Nathan; sisters Shirley Newman and husband Dick of Richfield, MN, Elaine Munson of Little Falls and Dorothy Stolhanski and husband Dick of Staples, MN, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Duayne and a daughter.

Bernice Lahr

Mrs. Elmer (Bernice F.) Lahr, age 72, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, died from cancer on March 18, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services were held March 20 at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in St. Cloud. The Rev. Peter Snyers officiated. Entombment was in the Assumption Mausoleum.

Bernice was born June 9, 1924, in St. Cloud to John and Anna (Zabinski) Plachecki. She married Elmer T. Lahr May 15, 1943, at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in St. Cloud.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kathleen Jones of Walker, MN, and Ann Marie Ethen of Royalton, MN; five grandchildren, two great- grandchildren and one sister, Margaret Oien of St. Cloud. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Leonard and one infant great-grandson.

Pallbearers were grandchildren.

Lucille Skroch

Lucille Skroch, age 76, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died March 12, 1997 at her home.

Funeral services were held March 15, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, with Father Silverius Schmitt officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Lucille was born Novemer 27, 1920 near Holdingford, MN to Stanley and Sally (Kuklok) Warzecka. She married Sylvester Skroch on November 22, 1941 in Chicago, IL. In 1943, they moved to Bowlus, where they farmed. After her husband’s death in 1981, she continued to live on the farm near Bowlus.

Survivors include sons, Jerome and wife Joan of Rice, MN, Raymond and wife Sharon of Elmdale, Dennis and wife Bernie of Bowlus; sisters, Cecelia Grebinoski and husband Alfred of Lombard, IL, Jeanette Fautsch of Boseman, MT; brothers, Othmar Warzecka of Renton, WA, Alan Warzecka and wife Donna of Holdingford; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sylvester.

Casketbearers were grandchildren: Jeff Skroch, Bev Swanson, Cheryle Skroch, Pam Skroch, Lynn Kreitman, Brian Skroch, Barb Skroch and Steven Skroch.
