Mary Vanderpoel

Mary Vanderpoel passed away April 21, 1997 at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home in Onamia, MN at the age of 99.

Funeral services were held April 24 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia with Reverend Richard Fitzer officiating. Burial was at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Onamia.

Mary was born on October 28, 1897 in Marion, SD to Jacob and Sara (Bornn) Willms. She grew up and attended school near Ulen, MN. Mary was united in marriage to Arthur W. Vanderpoel on March 31, 1920 in Ulen. To this union three sons were born. The couple had farmed in Clinton, Ogilvie and Mora for a time until settling in Big Stone County. In 1936 they moved to the Onamia area where they continued farming. In 1982 they retired and moved into town. Mary was a dedicated farmer’s wife, helping with chores and raising their children. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia.

Survivors include her two sons, Donald and his wife, Fern, and Leonard and his wife Helen, both of Onamia; daughter-in-law, Joyce Vanderpoel of Springfield, MO; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathrine Hilde of Ulen, MN, Susana Kohout of Chaska, MN and Sara Workentine of Salem, OR; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one grandson, one great-grandson, five brothers and two sisters.

The casketbearers were grandsons, Greg, Dennis, Keith, Norman, Mike, Ron and Bill Vanderpoel. Burial was at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Onamia.

John P. Dukowitz, Sr.

John P. Dukowitz, Sr. age 84, a resident of Cushing, MN, died April 23, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services will be held April 28 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, with the Rev. Hal Spann of the First United Church officiating. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls.

John P. Dukowtiz, Sr. was born June 24, 1912, in Moran Township, Todd County, to the late John L. and Stella (Kulowski) Dukowitz. As a young boy he lived in St. Cloud, later moving to South Dakota where he worked on various farms. He entered the United States Army on August 23, 1942, and received an honorable discharge on September 29, 1945. During his military years he was in the Battery A65 field armored artillery battalion. He travel through Tienisia, Sicily, Nor-mandy, France, Rhineland, Central Europe including the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Bronze Star, Bronze Service Arrowwood, Good Conduct Medal, European African Medal, Eastern Theater Service Medal and five Overseas Service bars. After returning from the service, he moved to Summit, SD, and farmed until 1958. He was united in marriage to Shirley L.Wartenbee on April 2, 1948, in Ortonville, MN. In 1958 the couple moved to Cushing Township, Morrison County, MN, where he farmed and worked road construction as a heavy equipment operator for several contractors. He enjoyed fixing John Deere tractors and wood working crafts.

He is survived by his wife; Shirley; son, John P Dukowtiz, Jr. of Cushing; daughter, Helen Green and husband Myron of Mound, MN; brother Martin of Missouri; sisters, Agnes Madges of Staples, MN., Julia Kaspers of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, John Paul Dukowitz III of Cushing, MN, Angela Rae Dukowitz of St. Cloud, MN, and Jesse Glen Dukowitz of Randall, MN; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Bernard, Frank and Theodore Dukowitz.

Casket bearers will be Jerome Kedrowski, Daniel Anderson, Pat Vozen, Jack Dieck, Dave Nelson and Jim Robinson.

Evangeline “Vannie” Franson

Evangeline “Vannie” Franson, age 92, of Minneapolis, MN died on April 21, 1997 at Edina Care Center.

Funeral services April 24, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Minneapolis. Interment was at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Vernelle Varno, wife of the late Leroy Varno, Minneapolis, Darlene and Jerry Brandt of Albert Lea; sons, Dick, Gary; 13 grandchildren: Mark and Mona Varno, Sheila and Ron Glocke, Craig and Marilyn Varno, Michelle and James Classen, Renee and Tim Turgeon, Brian and Denise Varno, Kelly and Marilyn Brandt, Kevin Brandt, Kim and Jim Bennewitz, Terri Franson, Todd Franson and Kathy Soutter, Tim and Elizabeth Franson, Coleen Franson; 20 great-grandchildren; six sisters and two brothers, Ceil Taylor, Loretta Bailey, Rita Schilling, Florence Turcotte, Lois DeLaHunt, Betty Nielson, Ron and Don DeLaHunt; three brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews and numerous friends; former daughters-in-law Margaret Franson, Katie Franson, and Judy Rader.

Vannie was preceded in death by her husband, Verner W. Franson, a retired city of Minneapolis employee, and her son, Mike Franson.

Damon Nouis

Damon Nouis, age 76, a resident of Holdingford, passed away April 10, 1997 at St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Funeral services were April 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN., with the Rev. Todd Schneider officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Damon A. Nouis was born April 21, 1920, in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, MN to Stephen and Mary (Habas) Nouis. He married Virginia Heisick March 2, 1942, at Camp Rucker, Dotthan, AL. He worked at Dezurik as a pattern maker for 32 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Upsala, Upsala Lions and American Legion 350.

Survivors include his sons and daughters, Jeanette Nelson, Brooklyn Park, MN, Sharon Marchand and Sally Trisko, Maple Grove, MN, Renee Jurgens and Melanie Trombetta, Sartell, MN, Greg of Champlin, Steve of Grey Eagle, Peggy Bach of Little Falls, John, New Orleans, LA, Mark, Upsala, Pamela and Paul, Minneapolis, brothers and sisters, Genevieve Kloss and Rita Kloss, Royalton, MN, LeRoy of Little Falls, Delphine, Westlake, Seattle, WA, Bob of Pasadena, TX, Jerry and Arnold of Minneapolis; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia (December 27, 1991); and infant son, Joseph.

Pallbearers were Sam Jurgens and his sons, Greg, Steve, John, Mark and Paul, Tony Marchand and Joe Trombetta.

Phillip Janey

Phillip Janey, age 67, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died April 23, 1997 at his home. Funeral services were held April 26 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, with Father Tony Kroll officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Phillip was born in Swanville Township, MN on June 8, 1929 to the late Joseph and Frances (Sobiech) Janey. He was united in marriage to Evangeline Lange on June 26, 1951. They farmed near Sobieski until 1977 when they moved to Little Falls. Phillip worked for the Little Falls School District until he retired in 1991. He loved fishing, walking and doing yard work. He was a member of AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees), and was a member of AFL-CIO.

Survivors include his wife, Evangeline of Little Falls; sons, Gerald and wife Mary of Litchfield, MN, Phillip Jr. and wife Anita of St. Joe, MN, Mark of St. Cloud, MN, Patrick and wife Kathy of Little Falls, Kevin of Little Falls, Jeffrey and wife Rose of Little Falls; daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Klemmer and husband Pete of Albany, MN, Mrs. Sharon Reichel and husband Roger of Staples, MN; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary; two brothers; and two sisters.

Casketbearers were Duane Czech, John Grzybek, David Janey, Kenny Lange, Alcuin Harren and John Zak.

Mrs. Ray ‘Gloria Jean’ Woitalla, age 51, of Harding, MN died April 23, 1997 at her home as the result of a heart attack.

Funeral services were April 26 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Gloria was born July 22, 1945 in Little Falls, MN to Jerome and Valeria (Aschenbrener) Waytashek. She was united in marriage to Raymond P. Woitalla on August 25, 1964 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, MN. Following their marraige, they farmed north of Harding where they resided at the time of her death. Gloria was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, where she was a member of the Rosary Sodality. She was also a farmer, CCD teacher and enjoyed gardening and quilting. Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Harding; mother, Valeria Waytashek of Hillman; sons, Dale and wife Julie of Pierz, John and wife Cindy of Albertville, MN, Mike of Harding, Dan and fiánce Amy of St. Cloud, MN, Roger and fiánce Kathy of Brainerd, MN, Kenny of Pierz, and Matt residing at home; daughter, RaeAnn Kruchten and husband John of Burtrum, MN and Kathy residing at home; three brothers and four sisters; along with eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jerome; two sisters, Laurie Waytashek and Sylvia Patterson.

Casketbearers were Doug Woitalla, Jason Woitalla, Timothy Woitalla, Glen Waytashek, David Brill and Brandon Waytashek.

Raymond G. Hoffman, age 78, a resident of Pierz, MN, died April 28, 1997 at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Pierz with Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Raymond G. Hoffman was born June 5, 1918 in Pierz, the son of the late Charles and Margaret ‘Held’ Hoffman. He grew up near Pierz and attended country school. Ray was united in marriage to Marie T. Tretter on February 16, 1942 at St. John’s Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN. The couple farmed for 40 years, one mile west of Pierz, until semi-retiring in 1982. Ray also did custom baling and field chopping. He continued to help his son, Lloyd, farm until 1992. Ray enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.

Survivors include his son, Lloyd Hoffman and wife Sharon of Pierz; daughter, Rita Koetter and husband Gerald of Pierz; brothers, William Hoffman of Pierz, Edward Hoffman and wife Emma of Pierz and Victor Hoffman and wife Delores of Pierz; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie on May 31, 1993, parents, sisters, Margaret Dehler and Bertha Hoffman.

Pallbearers were Alan Koetter, Lloyd, Ted, John and James Hoffman and Jeff Czech.

John A. Grundhofer, age 87, a resident of Pierz, MN, died April 28, 1997 at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz. Funeral services were held May 1 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Rev. Kenneth Brenny and Rev. Michael J. O’Connell officiating.

John A. Grundhofer was born January 26, 1910 in Buckman, MN; the son of the late Nick and Mary ‘Hohn’ Grundhofer. He grew up and attended school in Buckman. Upon completing his schooling, John worked at Hartmann’s Store in Buckman. He was united in marriage to Laura B. Flicker on June 13, 1934 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. The couple owned and operated the Rite Spot Bar in Buckman from 1935-38. The couple relocated to Glendale, CA where John worked as a bartender. During WWII, he also worked at Douglas Aircraft and later at Lockhhed in quality assurance. In 1950, John began working as a bartender at Damon’s Steak House. In 1971 he was promoted to restaurant manager, a position he held until retiring in 1981 to Hemet, CA. In 1992, the couple returned to reside in Pierz. John enjoyed fishing and horse racing. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.

Survivors include his wife, Laura B. Grundhofer; sons, John F. ‘Jack’ Grundhofer and wife Beverly of Orono, MN and Jerry A. Grundhofer and wife Kathleen of Cincinnati, OH; daughter, Joan Briggs and husband Gary of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Robert Grundhofer and wife Marge of Niles, MI; sister, Barbara Poster of Madison, WI; grandchildren, Kathryn Grundhofer, Karen Elkawa, Lauren Grundhofer, Jeff Briggs and a great-grandson, Ramzi Elkawa. John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond Grundhofer, sisters, Henrietta Weber and Gertrude Hurrle.

Pallbearers were Hassan Elkawa, Marn and Gerald Flicker, Ron and Don Saatzer and Mike Wilson.

Emily Gradin, age 82, a resident of Little Falls, MN died April 27, 1997 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were April 30 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, with Father Tony Kroll officiating. Burial was in the Darling Cemetery.

Emily was born December 6, 1914 in Flensburg, MN to the late Leo and Dorothy (Knopik) Zilka. She grew up in the Flensburg area and was united in marriage to Victor Gradin on July 21, 1937 in Flensburg. The couple farmed near Little Falls until they retired and moved into Little Falls. Emily enjoyed gardening, playing cards, sewing, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Christian Mothers and of the Degree of Honor.

Survivors include her husband, Victor of Little Falls; sons, Alan and wife Sonia of Stockton, CA, Kenneth and wife Anita of Swanville, MN, Lance and wife Bonnie of Little Falls, Kevin and wife Melody of Clear Lake, MN, Dale and wife Brenda of Little Falls; daughters, Carol Dreon and husband Tom of Emily, MN, Debra Hakula and husband Merrill of McMinnville, OR; brothers, Albert Zilka of Motley, MN, Benny, Louis, and Larry Zilka of Little Falls; and Brother Placid Zilka of Dubuque, IA; sisters, Angie Adams, Sr. Serena Zilka, and Dorothy Pierzina, all of Little Falls, Mary Rose Weiland of Hoffman; 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Sammy, Bernard and Leonard.

Casketbearers were grandsons, Danny Gradin, Erik and Corey Gradin, Brian, Jeffrey and Steven Gradin.
