Margaret A. Ellison

Margaret A. Ellison, age 78, a resident of Minnetonka, MN, formerly of Freedhem, MN, died May 6, 1997, at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral services were held May 9 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN, with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Freedhem Evangelical Free Church Cemetery.

Margaret Anne Ellison was born on May 14, 1918, in Belle Prairie Township, Morrison County, MN to the late David and Aleen (Olson) Ellison. She grew up in the Freedhem area and went on to graduate from St. Cloud Teachers College. She taught school in Becker and Herman, MN for a few years. Following her teaching years Margaret began her ministry of caring for people in need and raising the Edlund children. Her last twenty years were spent living with her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ray Stromquist. Music was a very special love of Margaret’s as well as teaching Sunday School. She was a member of the Excelsior Covenant Church in Excelsior, MN.

Survivors include the family she raised who lovingly called her ‘Nanna’, Faith Easter and husband Tom and children Paul, Daniel, Michael and Andrew of Waconia, MN; Mark Edlund, Craig Edlund and Gordon Olson; sisters, Betty Stromquist and husband Ray of Minnetonka, MN, Florence Carlson of Seattle, WA, Grace Lorenson and husband Russ of New Brighton, MN, Joyce Johnson and husband Harold of Red Wing, MN, Esther Nordlie and husband Frank of Gainesville, FL and many nieces and nephews, special friends and a loving church family where she taught Sunday School for 20 years and gave love and encouragement to many children who loved “Miss Margaret.” Margaret is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Norman.

Adam Henry Massmann

Adam Henry Massmann, infant son of Jeff and Connie Massman, Little Falls, MN, passed away May 9, 1997, at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral services were held May 12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Adam Henry Massman is survived by his parents, Jeff and Connie Massmann of Little Falls; a brother, Mathew J. Massmann of Little Falls; grandparents, Arthur and Charlotte Van Risseghem of Little Falls; and Daniel and Marge Massmann of Rockville, MN; great-grandparents, Rose Marie Ernst of Crosby, MN and Mary Van Risseghem of Onamia, MN; many aunts and uncles.

James A. Niemi

James A. Niemi, age 69, a resident of Nisswa, MN, died May 12, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were May 15, at St. Christopher’s Church in Nisswa with Father Seamus Walsh officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd, MN.

Niemi was born in Staples, MN on April 12, 1928, to Enio and Frances (Mertens) Niemi. He attended St. Francis School in Brainerd and also in Fairbanks, AK. He was employed as an explorer for E.J. Longyear Drill Company on the Mesabi Range and was employed by Anderson Brothers as a heavy equipment operator in road construction for 35 years, retiring in 1991.

Survivors include his wife LuVerne; two daughters, Kay and son-in-law Brian Aase of Nisswa and Debra and son-in-law John Hillstrom of Nisswa; four grandchildren, Kelly and Stacie Aase and Ashley and David Hillstrom; one sister, Donna Howell of Chula Vista, CA. Two infant children, Chileen and Richard; son, Gary; his parents; and stepfather William Lee died earlier.

Anna C. Olson

Anna C. Olson, age 98, died May 2, 1997, in Tacoma, WA.

Funeral services were May 6 at South Yakima Avenue Chapel. Interment was at Mt. View Memorial Park.

Anna was born November 24, 1898, in Little Falls, MN and moved to Tacoma in 1936. Survivors include a brother, Edwin Johnson, Minneapolis, MN; children, Bernice Burnett of Portland, OR and Raymond A. (Dolores) Olson, Fircrest; grandchildren, Elouise (Joe) Marez, Tacoma, Elizabeth Burnett, Portland, Gerald (Rebecca) Olson, Maltbie, WA, James (Cheryl) Olson, Gig Harbor, Cynthia (Chris) Fontana, University Place; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Arthur L. Olson; brothers Andy and Adolph Johnson, and a sister, Esther Sharpe.

Bridget “Birdie” M. Fisher

Bridget “Birdie” M. Fisher, age 71, a resident of Hillman, MN, died May 7, 1997, at the Foley Nursing Center in Foley, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Bulldog Lake with the Rev. Laurn Virnig and Rev. Vincent Ott officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Bridget “Birdie” Martha Fisher was born October 8, 1925, in North Benton, Benton County, MN to the late Stanley and Martha (“Zulawski”) Dombovy. She grew up in Benton County and attended school in a one room country school house in North Benton. Following her schooling she worked in Minneapolis for Honeywell during the war years, and also at a Chinese restaurant. She was united in marriage to Vernon L. Fisher on October 8, 1946. Following their marriage the couple lived on the home farm near Bulldog Lake in Roosevelt Township, Crow Wing County, MN where they farmed. In her later years she worked at the school in Pine Center as a cook from 1982 to 1983 when she retired. Following the couple’s retirement, they continued to live on the home farm. After her husband’s death on November 22, 1993, Birdie lived for a year with her children and then moved to Heritage Place in Foley, residing there until death. She was member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Bulldog Lake, St. Elizabeth’s Society of Bulldog Lake, Hillman Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the Foley Nursing Center. She had a great ability for cheering up the residents of the nursing home, was an excellent cook and demonstrated her faith in everything she did, and with those she worked and served.

Survivors include sons and daughters, John Fisher and wife Dee of Harding, MN, Ronald Fisher and wife Patti of Angora, MN, Lawrence Fisher of Hillman, MN, Jean Young and husband Jim of Ramey, MN, Jan Matvick and husband Joe of Princeton, MN, Jenny Matvick and husband Tony of Ramey, MN and Julie Kampa and husband Eddie of Ramey, MN; half sisters, Genevieve Fleck and Josephine Hayes, both of Pierz, MN; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, infant daughter, Angel; brother, Henry Dombovy; half brother, Richard Orzechowski; grandchildren, Tara Lynn Fisher and Ivy Sue Matvick.

Honorary pallbearers were Chad Matvick, Eric Matvick, Clay Matvick, Jessie Young, Jason Fisher, April Young, Holly Young, Amanda Young, Jacki O’kroi, Katie Matvick and Molly Kempa. Casketbearers were Josh Matvick, Jeremy Young, Curt Fisher, Aaron Fisher, Adam Fisher and Clint Matvick.

Dan Malisheske

Dan Malisheske, age 79, a resident of Harding, MN, died at his home on May 8, 1997.

Funeral services were held May 13 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Dan was born April 7, 1918, in Rice, MN to the late Frank and Christina (O’Konek) Malisheske. He grew up and attended school in rural Rice. He served in the C.C. Camps prior to working for Simonson Lumber Company in St. Cloud, MN. He was united in marriage with Helen Jancik on November 19, 1942. From 1943-1952, they farmed in rural Milaca, MN. They moved to Harding, where they farmed until retirement. Dan was a member of Holy Cross Parish in Harding, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Crosier Apostolate.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; son, Karl of Rochester, MN; daughters, Mary Borgheiinck and husband Tony of Long Prairie, MN, Laurice Bauer and husband Ron of Willsboro, NY; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Severin of Ely, MN, Hilary of Milaca and Willard of Sartell, MN; sisters, Dorothy Katke and Lorraine Frerich, both of Milaca. He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.

Casketbearers were Dan Woitalla, Christel Borgheiinck, Karl Bauer, Doug Bauer, Tim Borgheiinck and Greg Kowalzek.

Jordan James Wensmann

Jordan James Wensmann, five-year-old son of James and Julia (Dehn) Wensmann of Bowlus, MN died May 28, 1997 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held May 31 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale with the Rev. Todd Schneider officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Jordan was born February 27, 1992 in Little Falls to James and Julie (Dehn) Wensmann. He was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale.

Survivors include his parents of Bowlus and one sister, Jackie at home; grandparents, Don and Rita Wensmann of Bowlus and Norbert and Hellen Dehn of Albany, MN.

Pallbearers were Michael and Joe Notch, Chris Dehn, Craig and Kris Wensmann and Jeff Roske.

Thomas Pierzina

Thomas B. Pierzina, age 54, a resident of Cushing, MN, died May 26, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held May 29 at St. James Catholic Church in Randall, MN, with Rev. Richard Wey, Rev. Thomas Meyer and Rev. Harold J. Kost officiating. Burial was in Our Lady Of Lourdes Cemetery in Little Falls.

Thomas was born April 10, 1943, in Little Falls to the late Clarence and Ruby (Hankes) Pierzina.

He grew up in Little Falls and graduated from Little Falls High School in 1961.

Tom entered the U.S. Air Force in 1962 and served until his honorable discharge on December 22, 1965.

He attended St. Cloud State University and then transferred to South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering in 1971. Tom was united in marriage to Carolyn Kahnke in December 1970 at St. James Catholic Church in Randall. Carolyn was killed in an automobile accident in December 1974.

Tom worked for Minnesota Power Co. in Little Falls as an electrical engineer from February 3, 1971, until the present. He was united in marriage to Diane Allerman in February 1983 in Brainerd, MN. Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, traveling and family get-togethers.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Randall, Rice Lake Nine Club, Little Falls American Legion Post #46 and was past Post Commander, Little Falls 40 and 8, and served on the Scandia Valley Township Board for one year.

Survivors include his son, Jason D. Pierzina of Cushing; daughter, Ashley D. Pierzina of Cushing; sister, Joann Schlangen and husband Thomas of Forest Lake, MN; twin sister, Terry Schaffer and husband Elmer of Little Falls and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn and nephew, John Schaffer. Honorary Pallbearers were members of Little Falls American Legion Post #46. Pallbearers were John Allerman, Marvin Allerman, Jr., Daniel Schlangen, Lee Schaffer, Dennis Johnson and Nancy Nicholson.
