Frieda Joswiak

Frieda A. Joswiak, age 86, a resident of Foley Nursing Center, Foley, MN, and formerly of Morrill, MN, died May 22, 1997, at Foley Nursing Center, Foley.

Funeral services were held May 24 at Foley Funeral Home, Foley. The Deacon Fred Reker officiated. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Polish National Catholic Cemetery in N. Benton rural Benton County.

Frieda was born December 29, 1910, in Minden Twp., rural Benton Co., MN, to Fred and Minnie Rettkowski. She married Frank Joswiak July 16, 1944, in N. Benton. She had lived in Morrill all her life where she had farmed with her husband. She had lived at the Foley Nursing Center for the past year.

Survivors include her daughter and sons, Gertrude Krawczeski of Stillwater, MN; Albert of Foley and Daniel of Royalton, MN; one grandson, one great-grandchild, two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank on March 11, 1977; son, Sylvester in December of 1981 and sisters and brothers, Minnie Blaske, Ann Leser, Carolin Rettkowski and Fred and Ernest Rettkowski.

Pallbearers were Jack Joswiak, Kenny Joswiak, Brian Marconie, Lynn Novak, Loren Joswiak, Terry Stellmach and Steve Emerson.

Stanley Mrozik

Stanley I. Mrozik, age 76, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 23, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls. Funeral services were held May 27 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Little Falls. Military Rites were conducted by Little Falls American Legion Post #46 and Little Falls VFW Post # 1112.

Stanley was born March 28, 1921, in Pike Creek Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Joseph and Eva (Ginter) Mrozik. He grew up in Little Falls and attended and graduated with the Little Falls High School class of 1942. He entered the United States Marine Corps on July 22, 1942, and received an honorable discharge September 28, 1945. Stanley served as a Staff Sergeant, Rifle Marksman and served in special military qualifications as a carpenter while in the South Pacific. He participated in the defense of PIVA YOKE (Bougainville) and the Consolidation of the Northern Solomons. Following the military he returned to Little Falls and worked at the Gamble’s Store. He was united in marriage to Florence M. Vertin on August 17, 1946, at St. Xaviors Catholic Church in Little Falls. He owned and operated Little Falls Home Improvement for many years. After the opening of the Key Row Apartments in Little Falls, he and his wife Florence served as caretakers for the past 22 years and, at the same time, he worked for Minnesota Power & Light in Little Falls as a groundskeeper until his death. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Little Falls VFW Post # 1112, Little Falls American Legion Post #46, Disabled American Veterans and the Cooties. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and feeding the ducks.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; daughters, Terry Rasmussen of Little Falls, Catherine Borash and husband Victor of Pillager, MN, and Mary Eddy and husband Gary of Alexandria, MN; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Anthony, Alex, John, Jake, Max, Frank and Joseph Mrozik; sisters, Marie McDermott, Frances Gould and Ann Wagner.

Honorary Pallbearers were Chris, Josh and Gary Eddy, Brad Karjala, Eric Warner, Bob Borash, John T., Nick and Seth Rassmus-sen. Casketbearers were members of Little Falls American Legion Post #46 and Little Falls VFW Post #1112.

Loretta Magee

Loretta E. Magee, age 89, a resident of Randall, MN, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held May 24 at the Randall Presbyterian Church with Rev. Suzanne Cekalla officiating. Burial was in the Randall Cemetery.

Loretta was born April 2, 1908, in Little Falls, to the late August & Elizabeth (Pantzke) Kuesel. She grew up in Little Falls, graduating from Little Falls High School. She attended Normal School and received a Teaching Certificate. Loretta taught elementary school in Darling for two years. She was united in marriage to Donald M. Magee on Decem-ber 25, 1929, at her parents’ home in Little Falls. The couple moved to Randall and purchased Mueller’s Store. In 1939 they built Magee’s Market on Main Street in Randall where Loretta was involved in its operation until 1991. She continued to live in her home until becoming a resident of the Lutheran Home in Little Falls in November, 1996. Loretta was a member of and very active in the Randall Presbyterian Church. She sang in the church choir, Bible study group, assistant church treasurer and the Ladies Circle. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, the Randall Senior Citizens, Civic League and the Neighborhood Birthday Club.

Survivors include son, Jim Magee and wife Jackie of Randall; daughters, Sharon Magee of Plano, TX, and Kathryn Magee of Plano; brothers, George Kuesel of Dallas, TX, and Fred Kuesel of Richfield, MN; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. Magee in 1960; son, Keith M. Magee in 1991, brothers, Roland and Carl Kuesel and sister, Betty Moses.

Pallbearers were Kevin, Michael, Steven and Chris Magee, William Kuesel, Timothy Strack and Morris Nelson.

Marie Super

Marie Super, age 89, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 23, 1997, at the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held May 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Flensburg, MN.

Marie was born May 23, 1908, in St. Paul, MN. She was united in marriage to Charles Jelinski on November 14, 1933, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flens-burg. The couple farmed in the Flensburg area until Charles’ death on September 28, 1944. Marie was united in marriage to Andrew Super on September 25, 1945, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg. The couple farmed near Randall, MN, for six years, relocating to Cloquet, MN, in 1951. In 1954 they moved to Little Falls. Her husband, Andrew, passed away on April 17, 1957. Marie continued to reside in Little Falls and became a resident of the Lutheran Home in October, 1993. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She also like to crochet, garden, grow flowers and was very fastidious about having a clean house. Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls.

Survivors include her son, Don Super and wife Mary of St. Cloud, MN; daughters, Evelyn Osterhues of Fridley, MN, Roselyn Krych and husband Jerome of Randall and Florence Knoll and husband David of Little Falls; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Charles and Andrew; two brothers and a sister. Pallbearers were her grandchildren.

Clara Thompson

Clara Marie (Peterson) Thompson, age 106, died May 20, 1997. She had been living at Presbyterian Homes of Lake Minnetonka, MN.

A graveside service, conducted by Rev. John Longley of Lake Alexander, was held May 23 at Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. A memorial service will be held June 14 at Wayzata Community Church, Wakefield Chapel.

Clara graduated from Minnea-polis South High School in 1908. She then attended and graduated from St. Cloud Normal (now St. Cloud State University). In 1912, she came to Little Falls to teach. She married Leo Martin Thompson of Little Falls in 1917. Thompson was the owner of a funeral home for 40 years before he sold it to Dale Shelley. Clara was a member of First Congrega-tional Church and a member and soloist in the choir. She was active in many clubs, Order of Eastern Star and Past Matrons. In 1954, she held a state office in Eastern Star-Grand Chaplain. She also belonged to the St. Cloud chapter of White Shrine. In 1978, after the death of Leo, Clara and her daughter Carol moved to Wayzata, MN, where Clara became a member of Wayzata Community Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Leora ‘Lee’ Hanson and husband Roy of Wayzata and Carol, Presbyterian Homes; sons, Wayne and wife Lola May of St. Paul, MN, and Keith of New Hope, MN; grandchildren, Alan and wife Diane of Bloomington, MN, Gary and wife Mary of Savage, MN, Mark and wife Kim of St. Paul, Scott of St. Paul, Kristin Cashman and husband Doug of Apple Valley, MN, Tom of New Hope; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher, Lydia and William; sister-in-law Ruth Guernon of St. Cloud; nieces, Eunice McCune and Verna Libby of Minneapolis, MN, and other relatives in Minneapolis and Wisconsin.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leo Martin Thompson; father, Christ Peterson and mother, Marie Georgene Peterson; brother, William and sisters, Elna, Lu (Nellie) and Sophie.

Marie Virnig

Marie A. Virnig, age 87, a resident of Pierz, MN, died May 25, 1997, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.

Funeral services were May 28 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Laurn Virnig officiating and Father Tony Kroll and Father Ken Brenny con-celebrating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Marie was born April 12, 1910, in Ipswich, SD, to the late John and Margaret (Knippling) Jinder-lee. She was united in marriage with Werner Virnig on November 8, 1933, in Pierz. They farmed in Buh Township until they retired in 1966. Marie had been a resident at St. Mary’s Villa the past 3-1/2 years and she was a member of Christian Mothers.

Survivors include a son, James and wife Loura of Pierz; daughters, Patricia Kroll and husband James of Wahkon, MN, Betty Ann Zegarelli and husband Joe of Yonkers, NY, and Mary Dubow of Minneapolis, MN; 23 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Werner; son, Jerome; one sister, Clara Tax; granddaughter, Cindy Virnig; great-grandsons, Frankie Schir-mers and Dereck Hannold.

Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren. Pallbearers were Mark, Kevin, Bob and Glen Virnig, Pam Severin and Chuck Kroll.

James DeFoe

James “Jim” G. DeFoe, age 69, a resident of Sobieski, MN, formerly of Swanville, MN, died May 19, 1997, at his home in Sobieski.

Funeral services were held May 22 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville with the Rev. Thomas Meyer officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.

James was born on December 12, 1927, in Kandiyohi Township, Kandiyohi County, MN, to the late John & Mary (Galvin) DeFoe. As a child, Jim’s family moved to the Swanville area where he grew up. He was united in marriage to Carmen Molde on July 14, 1958, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville. Following their marriage the couple lived in Holdingford for a few years before moving to Pillsbury, MN, where they operated the Pillsbury Store from 1963-1970. They then moved to a farm in Burnhamville Town-ship where Jim farmed, drove school bus for the Swanville School District, and drove feed truck for Gessell Feed Mill in Swanville. Jim retired in 1995. The couple continued to live on the farm until December 1996 when they moved to Sobieski, MN, where they resided until Jim’s death. Jim was confirmed and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville for most of his life and recently became a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen of Sobieski; son, Tim DeFoe and wife Mary of Eagan, MN; daughters, Renee Burnstein and husband Steve of North Mankato, MN, Sharon Venske and husband Dennis of Randall, MN, and Gayl DeFoe and fiancee John Tschida of Little Falls; brother, Tom DeFoe and wife Lillian of White Bear Lake, MN, and Jack DeFoe and wife Anna of Swanville, MN; sister, Sister Constance Marie of St. Paul, MN and three grandchildren, Christopher, Ashley and Aaron. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe DeFoe and a sister, Elizabeth Litchy.

Pallbearers were John, Pat and Bill DeFoe, Dennis Holtz, Tony Loxterkamp, and Phil Cichon.

Clarence Helmbrecht

Clarence E. ‘Hap’ Helmbrecht, age 83, a resident of Long Prairie, MN, died May 19, 1997, at the Long Prairie Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services were held Friday, May 23, at the Little Falls Jehovah Witnesses Kingdom Hall with Robert Brophy officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery.

Clarence was born October 18, 1913, in Long Prairie to the late Sebastien and Alice ‘Dinkel’ Helmbrecht. He grew up in Long Prairie and attended school there. In 1929, the family moved to a farm near Long Prairie. In 1931, Clarence moved to Montana and worked as a ranch hand in season, and was a trapper during the winter. He entered the U.S. Army in June, 1941, and served until his honorable discharge in October, 1945. He returned to Montana and continued ranch work and trapping until retiring in January 1972 back to Long Prairie. Clarence was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Ewald on March 15, 1979, in Long Prairie. The couple lived in the Swanville, Pillsbury area until retiring to Long Prairie in 1992. Clarence enjoyed horses, hunting, fishing and his dogs. He was a member of the Little Falls Jehovah Witnesses and the Swanville Sportsman’s Club.

Survivors include wife, Dorothy E. Helmbrecht; son, David J. Helmbrecht of Havre, MT; daughters, Sharon Hughes and husband Pearson of Campbellsport, WI, and Paula Zahn and husband Charles of Okeechobee, FL; brothers, Jerome Helmbrecht of Havre, MT, and William Helmbrecht of Sauk Centre, MN; sisters, Rose Brooks of Marcus, IA, Mary Ann ‘Chuckie’ Polipnick of Sauk Centre and Elizabeth ‘Tootie’ Woods of Austin, MN; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Willie and Harold ‘John’ Helmbrecht; sisters, Una Bodle and grandson, Kevin Zahn.
