Paul E. Mandigo

Paul E. Mandigo, age 81, a resident of Little Falls, MN, and formerly of Burtrum, MN, passed away June 6, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held June 10 at the Shelley-Gibson Funeral Chapel in Swanville with the Rev. Hal Spann of the First United Church of Little Falls, officiating. Burial was in Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum.

Paul Elwin Mandigo was born September 9, 1915, in Burtrum, to the late Charles and Nellie (Collison) Mandigo. He grew up in Burtrum and attended school in Burtrum. He moved to Minneapolis and worked for the Ford Motor Company as a forklift operator until his retirement in 1977. He returned to Burtrum, lived there until May of 1996 when he entered St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Fall, residing there until his death. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his son, Phillip Mandigo of Apple Valley, MN; daughters, Annette Fyksen and husband James of Inver Grove Heights, MN; Maxine Wrose and husband Ron of Burnsville, MN; brother, Lyle Mandigo and wife Gail of Grantsburg, WI; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in by his parents, and sisters, Edna Berens and Eva Smith.

Casketbearers were Dale Smith, Larry Mandigo, Henry Wunder-lich, Ervin Muellner, Kenneth Berens and Mike Amundson.

Robert Louis St. Martin

Robert Louis St. Martin, age 72, a resident of Delaplane, VA, died June 7, 1997, at Fairfax Hospital.

Funeral services were held at the St. Martin residence, “Log-wood”, on June 10.

Robert was born July 21, 1924, in Little Falls, MN, to Joseph A. and Blanch Viechorek St. Martin. He married Louise Trible on December 6, 1952, in Manassas, VA. He was a surveyor and cartographer for the Army Map Service in Washington, DC which later became the Defense Mapping Agency, Hydrographic Topo-graphic Center. He had 40 years of government service, retiring in 1979 at age 55. During his service he traveled extensively to places such as New Guinea, Iran, Ethiopia, Sudan, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, England, France, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland, and the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1947, Chief Petty Officer on the U.S.S. Pasadena CL-65 from 1943-47 which was the second ship in Tokyo Bay during the WWII Peace Treaty signing. Mr. St. Martin witnessed MacArthur and Hirohito signing the treaty. He was a member of the American Legion, Association of Mapping Seniors and U.S.S. Pasadena CL-65 Association.

Survivors include his wife; sister, Blanche Jorgensen of Little Falls; and a brother, Paul S. Trible of Delaplane, VA.

Preceding him in death were brothers, Joseph Anthony St. Martin and Roger St. Martin. Pallbearers were Joseph Ware, Donald Warner, Paul S. Trible, Jack Mowbray, Manuel Quintero and Jack Bartenstein.

Walter V. Randall

Walter V. Randall, age 99, a lifelong resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 6, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls.

Walter Volney Randall was born September 4, 1897, in Ellendale, ND, to the late Phil S. Randall and Nora Delahunt. He moved with his family to Little Falls in 1903. He attended Little Falls schools and on December 10, 1918, entered the United States Marine Corps in St. Paul, MN. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and received a honorable discharge August 30, 1919. He returned to Minnesota and served with the United States Postal Service from 1919 until his retirement in 1961. He was united in marriage to Marie A. Virnig on February 21, 1927, at St. Francis Xaviors Catholic Church in Little Falls. Walter was a partner in the Bares Hardware Store in Little Falls from 1934 to 1945. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Little Falls Lions, Little Falls/Brainerd Elks, Knights of Columbus, Little Falls American Legion Post 46 where he served as a past commander. He enjoyed hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Marie A. (Virnig) Randall; sons, Charles V. and wife Mary Ann (Hunt) Randall of St. Paul; Dr. Phil S. and wife Alice (Hoolihan) Randall of Minneapolis; brother, R.A. (Tony) Randall and wife Luvern of Little Falls; brother-in-law, Joe Virnig and wife Betty of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren, Colleen Randall, Michael Randall, Brigid Randall-Raskin, Maura Randall, Brian Randall, Brendan Randall, Libby Randall-Pitre, Stephen Randall and John Randall and eight great-grandchildren; also special friend, Sister Therese Furnstahl of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls for her loving care which enriched Walter’s last years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frances and Charles Randall and sisters, Ramona Randall, Phyllis Randall, Marie Reilly and Bernadine Stiegel. Casketbearers were his grandchildren.

Bernadine L. Kruzel

Bernadine L. Kruzel, age 64, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 7, 1997 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held June 10 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, with Father LeRoy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Bernadine was born December 5, 1932 and raised in Sobieski, MN to the late Michael and Mary (Lashinski) Kedrowski. She attended school in Sobieski. She was united in marriage with Charles Krebs in 1950 in Sobieski. They then moved to Minneapolis where Bernadine worked as a cook and also for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. Charles died in 1965 and, in 1969, Bernadine moved to Little Falls and was then united in marriage to Sylvester Kruzel. Following their marriage they farmed in Sobieski. They retired from farming in 1975 and moved to Little Falls. Sylvester died in 1992. Bernadine enjoyed playing cards, flowers and having company. She was a member of the Christian Mothers and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Duane (Elaine) Johnson of Little Falls and Rosemary Czech of Long Mount, CO; sons, Richard Kruzel and wife Carmen of Vergas and Raymond Krebs of St. Cloud; brothers, Leonard Kedrowski of Cromwell, Donald and Eugene Kedrowski, both of Gilbert, MN and Michael and Jerome Kedrowski both of Cushing, MN; sisters, Loretta Wrobleski of Benson, MN, Cathy Bollig of Cushing, Jeanette Holtz of Sobieski and Adeline Bollig of McKinley and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one son, Michael Krebs, three sisters and four brothers.

Casketbearers were Janet and Robert Holtz, Shana and Cheryl Kedrowski, Randy and Russell Kruzel and Bill Brezinka.

Robert J. Pappenfus

Robert J. Pappenfus, age 76, of Dothan, AL, formerly of Little Falls, MN died January 4, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were conducted at St. Colomba Catholic Church in Dothan, AL. A memorial service will be held June 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Theodore’s Catholic Church in LaPorte, MN.

Robert was born December 25, 1920, in Sauk Rapids, MN, to A. J. “Tony” and Susan (Backus) Pappenfus. He moved with his family to Little Falls in 1923. He attended St. Aloysius Grade School, graduated from Little Falls High School and later attended St. John’s University of Collegeville. He married Patricia Brown on March 5, 1941 in Manly, IA. Pat died on December 18, 1970. He was employed at D.W. Owan Company of Minneapolis and then moved to St. Cloud where he operated Pap’s Sport Shop. Later he worked for Kuefler Real Estate until his retirement. He married Dorothy Volkl on February 19, 1972, in Brainerd, MN. He lived in Little Falls, St. Cloud, Avon, Kabakona Lake, LaPorte and Panama City Beach, FL. He was a member of Pinnacle Hunting Club of Little Falls, St. Cloud Country Club, St. Cloud Hunting and Trap Club, and various other sportsmen clubs.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Judy of Minneapolis; three sons, Michael of Centerville, VA, Tony of Billings, MT and Patrick of Dothan AL; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Vokl-Osendorf of Melrose, MN; a stepson, Michael Volkl, Lonetree, CO; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gene, of Little Falls.

Oliver Kapsner

Oliver L. Kapsner, age 67, a resident of Rogers, MN, died June 4, 1997, in his home.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Martin’s Church in Rogers on June 8, with interment at St. Martin’s Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Oliver L. Kapsner Memorial fund.

Oliver was employed by the First Bank of Rogers for 38 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions, American Legion, VFW and an active member of St. Martin’s Church. He was active on the Alumni Association for St. John’s Prep School, who presented him the Armor of Light award for 1997 on April 19.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Terhaar Kapsner; children, Jeanne Kapsner of Robbinsdale, MN; Tim Kapsner and wife Naomi of Minneapolis, MN; Kathy Kapsner Kohout and husband Tom of Rogers, Suzie Roberts and husband Van of Dania, FL; and Jerry Kapsner of St. Paul, MN; brothers, Leander of St. Joseph, MN; and Gilbert of Little Falls, MN; sisters, Irma Terwey of Mountain View, CA; Peggy Block of Buckman, MN; Regina Grittner of Royalton, MN; Ann Poser of Arden Hills, MN; and Rosetta Weber of Pierz, MN; grandchildren, Mara and Jan Kapsner, Phil and Matt Hilyar and Rebecca and Raches Kohout. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosanne; three brothers, Alphonse, Victor and Urban; a sister, Sr. Mary Cecilia Kapsner and his parents, Frank and Barbara Kapsner, who had farmed in the Buckman area.

Agnes D. Girtz

Agnes D. Girtz, age 83, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 15, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services were held June 18 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Timothy Wenzel officiating. Interment was in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery.

Agnes Delores Girtz was born on January 1, 1914, in Little Falls to the late John and Agnes (Miller) Vertin. She grew up in Little Falls graduating from the class of 1931. She moved to Minneapolis and attended the Minneapolis School of Arts for two years. She was united in marriage to Joseph Charles Girtz on September 23, 1935, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. Agnes worked at the Misses Dress Shop in Little Falls; in later years as an archivist at the St. Francis Convent under the direction of Sister Mary Assumpta on the book “In The Shadow Of His Wings.” Her husband Joseph became ill, and she then retired to care for him until his death on January 14, 1980. Her hobbies included drawing, painting, sculpting, antiques, flower gardening and reading. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Morrison County Historical Society, Christian Mothers, Library Board, St. Gabriel’s Hospital Auxiliary and the Heritage Preservation Committee.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas J. Girtz and wife, Andrea of Lake City, MN and Daniel John Girtz and wife, Pamela of River Falls, WI; daughter, Susan J. Anfinson and husband, Daniel Hudson of Little Falls; sisters, Margaret Smith of Little Falls and Florence Mrozik of Little Falls; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; infant son, Joseph Robert Girtz; brothers, Mark, Matthias and John Vertin and sisters, Bernadine Raymond and Rose Vertin. Honorary pallbearers were Susanna Girtz and Nancy Rennaker. Active pallbearers were Paul, Mark, and Dan Anfinson and Adam, Ben and Chris Girtz.

Vernon Proper

Vernon H. Proper, age 74, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died June 15, 1997 at the Lutheran Senior Citizen Home in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held June 18 at the Assembly of God Church in Little Falls with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Vernon H. Proper was born March 15, 1923, in Sherburne County, the son of the late George and Nettie (Culbterson) Proper. The family came to live in Little Falls. In 1929, the family moved to the Hillman area where Vern attended school. He finished his schooling in Sherburne County and then worked various jobs. Vern worked as a section foreman for Northern Pacific Railroad and later, Burlington Northern Railroad from December 12, 1946, until retiring in 1983. He then did volunteer work at the Assembly of God Church as the groundskeeper and in the office. Vern’s hobby was working on cars. He was a member of the Little Falls Assembly of God.

Survivors include his brother, Clarence Proper and wife Myrtle of Champlin, MN; two aunts, one uncle and a few nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Wayne Scherling, Art Durene, Roman Schelonka, Dave Miedl, Maynard Zimmerman and Bud Norwood.
