Earle V. Larson

Earle V. Larson, age 82, of Eagan, MN, and Cushing, MN, passed away May 30, 1998, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held June 6 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cushing.

Earle was a retired employee of Callahan Steel in Newport, and a WWII veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Florence (Carter) Larson; stepsons, Joe Schefter and Dave Carter; stepdaughter, Marcy Otto; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and, sisters, Phyllis Christopherson, Dorothy Nelson and Marjorie Erickson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Hazel Larson; brother, John; sisters, June and Sybill.

Ermalinda Smieja
Ermalinda Smieja, age 72, a resident of Royalton, MN, died March 13, 1998, at her residence in Royalton.

Services were held March 16 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Royalton with Pastor John Ramsbacher officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Royalton.

Ermalinda was born in Albany, MN, to William F. and Ida (Barchenger) Kranz. She married Roman H. Smieja on May 1, 1945, in Baltimore, MD. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Royalton.

Survivors include her husband, Roman; children and their spouses, Donna Smieja, Marcia and Michael Blum, all of Little Falls, MN, Calvin and Susan Smieja of Royalton and five grandsons, Nathan, Wade, Adam, Isaac Smieja and Joshua Blum.

She was preceded in death by one son, Duane; two brothers and five sisters.

Beverly Jensen
Beverly Belle Jensen, age 71, a resident of the rural Hillman, MN, area, died March 13, 1998, at her home in Hillman.

Services were held March 16 at the Brenny Funeral Home in Pierz, MN, with Pastor Roger (George) Davis officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.

Beverly was born December 22, 1926, in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Newton and Julia (Spinden) Davis. She was the oldest daughter of five children. She and her three brothers and one sister grew up in South Minneapolis, where she also met and resided with her husband, Carl, and her three children, Rita, Kimm and son Todd. She retired to the Hillman area in 1989 where she had spent many summers and long weekends over the years. She will always be fondly remembered by her family and friends for her openness, quick wit and her desire to feed and can pickles. She could always be counted on to make people laugh when times were bad, and cry when times were good. Her passions were her family and her love for the game of cards.

Survivors include her husband, Carl of Hillman; one son, Todd and wife Jacqueline Jensen of Hillman; two daughters, Rita Iverson and husband Norman of Hillman and Kimm Jensen and Daniel Yorek of Hillman; two brothers, Kenneth and wife Myra Davis of Minneapolis and Pastor Roger (George) Davis of Minneapolis; one sister, Carol Jensen and husband Lyle of Hillman; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and close family friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother and an infant sister.

Casketbearers were friends and family.

Richard R. Mitton
Richard Ramsey Mitton of Champlin, MN, died at age 77, on August 2, 1997, in Little Falls, MN.

A Memorial Service was held August 9 at Longville Community Church, Longville, MN.

He was born May 6, 1920, in Pillager Township. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart for his service in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He received his master’s degree at the U of M and taught at various high schools and worked in the Job Corps Training Program. He loved to camp, fish and canoe, his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve; two sons, Paul (Terry) of Elk River, MN, and David (Mona) of Forest Lake, MN; one daughter, Lois of Champlin; five grandchildren, Troy, Becky, Andra, Rachel and Logan; one great-granddaughter, Casey; brothers, Eldridge (Al) of Hackensack, MN; and, Duane of Marion, VA. He was also “Papa” to Ka, Vanessa, Jason and Senetra.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Eunice Mitton.

Cecilia J. Scepaniak

Cecilia J. Scepaniak, age 85, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 2, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held August 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls.

Cecilia J. Scepaniak was born November 17, 1911, in Little Falls to the late Phillip and Mary (Trafas) Maciej. She grew up in Little Falls. She was united in marriage to Frank C. Scepaniak on June 2, 1931, at St. Adelbert’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. After their marriage the couple lived on the Scepaniak family farm until 1949 when they moved to Little Falls. In 1952 they purchased a farm in Little Falls Township and farmed. Following her husband’s death on July 25, 1993, Cecilia continued to live on the farm with her daughter and in 1955 she and her daughter moved to the Courtyard Apartments in Little Falls where she resided until her death. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Claudette Scepaniak of Little Falls; sisters, Mary Rose Florian of St. Paul, MN, Albina Deering of Little Falls; sisters-in-law, Frances Dyrland of Corning, IA, Helen Lukens of Little Falls; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister, Catherine Getchell.

Casketbearers were Bill Johnson, Sr., Bill Johnson, Jr., Thomas Zak, Byron Dyrland, Thomas Green and Troy Getchell.

Alois ‘Al’ C. Paschelke
Alois ‘Al’ C. Paschelke, age 91, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Cushing, MN, died November 26, 1997, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held November 29 at the Lutheran Care Center Chapel with Rev. Richard E. Bolling officiating. Burial was in the Randall Cemetery.

Alois C. Paschelke was born November 24, 1906, in Weyerhauser, WI, the son of the late Bernard and Josephine (Rybicki) Paschelke. He grew up and attended school in Weyerhauser. Upon completing his schooling, Al worked for the Soo Line Railway for several years. He then moved to Chicago, IL and worked as a machinist in a factory that produced printing presses. In 1946, he purchased the Deer Path Resort on Lake Alexander. He was united in marriage to Sylvia R. Oothoudt and she passed away on March 19, 1964. He then married Irene Paschell and she passed away in 1984. He retired from the Deer Path Resort in 1987 and became a resident of the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls in 1989. Al enjoyed playing the concertina, trapping and fishing.

Survivors include his brothers, Carl Paschelke of Rice Lake, WI; Clarence Paschelke of Chicago, IL; Chester Paschelke of Chicago, and Raymond Paschelke of Cushing; sisters, Margaret Oles of Chicago, Edna Cassini of Chicago, Gladys Bronner of Encinitas, CA; and Violet Fortuna of Chetek, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia, wife Irene, brothers, Leonard and Simon Paschelke, sister Agnes Kuschek and an infant sister.

Pallbearers were Bill Anderson, Dick Japp, Elmer Johnson, Irving and Gerald Crosby, James and Larry Paschelke.

Leona Held
Leona Held, age 64, a resident of Hillman, MN passed away November 28, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial was held December 1 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Hillman with Father Nathan Packard officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Leona was born April 11, 1933, in Hillman to the late John and Anna (Seelen) Hoheisel. She was united in marriage with Leroy Held on January 5, 1956, at St. Rita’s in Hillman. Leona enjoyed farming, loved her cows, gardening, baking and cooking.

Survivors include sons, Leroy and Rick, both of Hillman; a daughter, Raneyl Moren and husband Sam of Ramey, MN; brothers, Wilfred Hoheisel and wife Carol, Virgil Hoheisel and wife Mary Lou, all of Hillman; sisters, Mrs. Laura Sahr and husband Riney, and Bernice Held, all of Hillman; three grandchildren, Katy, Jacob and Maggie; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy; and infant twin sons.

Casketbearers were Dale Sahr, Martin Held, Wayne Hoheisel, Brad Hoheisel, Joey Brausen and Brent Hoheisel.

Deacon Weinhandl
Deacon Thomas Weinhandl, 53, died November 28, 1997, at his home in Staples, MN, following a long illness with cancer.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Motley, MN, on December 2. Bishop John Kinney presided. Burial was in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

He was ordained to the diaconate in June 1984 and served Sacred Heart Church, Staples, until 1990. Since then he has been serving St. Michael Church, Motley.

Thomas Weinhandl was born on February 24, 1944, in Brainerd. He attended St. Francis Grade School, Brainerd, and then Crosier Seminary, Onamia. He then returned to Brainerd to complete high school. After attending vocational school he worked as a machine designer for Honeywell, Inc., before moving to Staples in 1969 to teach math and blueprint reading. In 1977 he started a new career in real estate when he purchased the Goedker Realty Office in Staples.

Survivors include his wife Evonne, and four children: Suzanne and Corina, Wadena, MN; Timothy, Casper, WY; and Michael, Fargo, ND. He is also survived by his mother, Erma, of Brainerd, one brother, John, and three sisters, Jacqueline, Joyce and Janet.

He was preceded in death by his father, John, and grandparents.
