Viola Wiherski
Viola Lorraine Wiherski, age 82, a lifelong resident of Little Falls, MN, died February 7, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Viola was born October 5, 1915, in Little Falls to the late Wilfred and Elizabeth (Ploof) Como. She grew up in Little Falls and attended Little Falls schools. She was united in marriage to Christ A. Wiherski on August 5, 1935, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Little Falls. The couple made their home in Little Falls. She and her husband Christ, along with their own children, raised foster children for six years. Christ died April 10, 1980. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Christian Mothers, receiving her 50-year pin, the Royal Cafe bowling team, and a former member of the Little Falls V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include sons and daughter, John C. Wiherski of Little Falls, Richard J. Wiherski and wife Emmie of Columbia Falls, MT, Jerome H. Wiherski of Helena, MT, and Mary Hansmann and husband Raymond of Becker, MN; foster son, Jerry D. Nauber of Little Falls; brothers, William Como and wife Georgia Ann of Marshall, MN, and Robert Como and wife Bernice of Shoreview, MN; sister, Regina Tuller and husband Clarence of Little Falls; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Herbert Como and sisters, Marion Wetterczech and Burdettee Saulter.

Casketbearers were Daniel Hansmann, Karth Mitchell, Scott Jacobson, Jim Halverson, Peter Corney and Mark Wiherski.

Mary Boisjolie

Mrs. Jack ‘Mary’ Boisjolie, age 62, a resident of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Little Falls, MN, died February 1, 1998, in Tucson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 6 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

Mary was born March 20, 1935, in Little Falls, to Evear and Hattie (Sobiech) Gustafson. She graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls in 1953 and went on to graduate from St. Francis School of Nursing in Breckenridge, MN, in 1956. Mary was united in marriage with Jack Boisjolie on November 23, 1957. The couple resided in Little Falls where Mary worked for several years as a nurse at St. Gabriel’s Hospital. She also did port-a-medical physicals for several insurance companies. Mary and her husband Jack retired and moved to Tucson in October of l997. Her many interests in life included cooking, canning, fishing and reading. She enjoyed nature and especially enjoyed the relaxing time spent at their cabin on Leech Lake.

Survivors include her husband Jack of Tucson; mother, Hattie Gustafson of Little Falls; daughters, Kateri Owen of Tucson, and Mary Beth Konopaski of Bloomington, MN; sisters, Trudi Weiss of Fridley, MN, and Gretchen Gonzalez of Apple Valley, MN, and four grandchildren, Katie, Nicki, Justin, and Daniel.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Bob.

Casketbearers were Joe and Rick Abrahamson, Bill and Jeff Weiss, James Boisjolie, and Duane Sowada.

Frances Jankowski

Frances Jankowski, age 96, a resident of St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN, died February 7, 1998, at the Villa.

Funeral services were held February 9 at St. Mary’s Villa Chapel with Father Ron Docken-dorf officiating. Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, MN.

Frances was born March 1, 1901, in Agram Township, MN, to Fred and Mary (Fischer) Spor-lein. Frances lived in Chicago, IL, for approximately 30 years where she did housekeeping prior to moving to Brainerd, MN. She moved to Pierz in 1986 and later became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Queen of Chicago; a sister, Freida Schamal of Pierz and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Dessie Leander
Dessie Margaret Leander, age 90, died at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home on February 2, 1998.

Funeral services were held February 6 at the Alliance Church in Onamia, MN, with Pastor Tom Franklin officiating. Interment followed at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Dessie was born February 16, 1907, near Buffalo, MN, to John and Alma (Mills) Hayes. She grew up in the Buffalo, MN, area, then moved with her family to Hillman, MN. She spent her teenage years doing housework for different people in the area. She married Harry Leander on March 15, 1930, at the home of her parents in Hillman. To this union three children were born. The couple purchased the Leader farm near Onamia, where they continued to live until 1972. They then moved to Richardson Corner where they were active with the Lakeview Community Church. Dessie loved entertaining and cooking for people.

Survivors include her children, Ruth (T. Wayne) Larson of Houston, MN, John (Marilyn) of Sheridan, WY, and Mary (LeRoy) Johnson of Onamia; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Fern (Richard) Johnson of San Leandro, CA; brothers, Rex (Lois) and Del (Winnie) Hayes, both of Hillman and Wayne Hayes of Little Falls; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry and two grandchildren.

Casketbearers were David Larson, Tom Smith, Larry Dowell, Jack Hayes, Rod Hayes and Charles Gibson.

Alcuin Welle

Alcuin J. Welle, age 63, a resident of Lastrup, MN, died Monday, January 5, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial was January 9 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lastrup with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Al was born on the farm near Lastrup on March 19, 1934, to George and Martha (Wagner) Welle. He attended Lastrup grade school and graduated from Little Falls High School. Al was united in marriage with Leola Janson on June 26, 1956, in Lastrup. They owned and operated Welle’s Store from 1957 until 1975. He was a mail carrier since 1975 and was the Mayor of Lastrup from 1962 until 1976. Al was a member of St. John’s Church and was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. John’s. He was a charter member of the Two Cylinder Club, a member of Knights of Columbus, a member of Morrison County Historical Society, Minnesota Rural Letter Carriers Association and he bowled for 40 years with the Morrison County Bowling Association. He enjoyed traveling, reading and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife Leola of Lastrup; sons, Dennis and wife Linda of Pierz, MN, and Mike and wife Annie of Genola, MN; daughters, Patty Wacker and husband Dennis of Pierz, Louise Welle of Pierz and Diane Johnson and husband Troy of Champlin, MN; sister, Zita Poser and husband Urban of Pierz and grandchildren, Carrie and Scott Wacker and Ted, Bret, Kyle and Brad Welle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo and Aloysius and sister, Elizabeth Poser.

Casketbearers were Allen, Charlie and Sev Poser, Leo Welle, Jr., and Greg and Tom Woitalla.

Mary Copa

Mary Copa, age 90, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 2, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was January 6 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mary was born March 27, 1907, to Vince and Pauline (Wiczek) Kuchinski. She was united in marriage with John M. Copa on October 27, 1925, in Sobieski, MN. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1985. The couple farmed all their married life in Pike Creek Township. Mary loved cooking and gardening. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and of Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her six children, Gail Imgrund and husband John of Brainerd, MN; Rose Mary Calhoun and husband Ray of Little Falls; Del Brown and husband Terry of Wyoming, MN; Bernie Lattimer and husband George of Little Falls; Betty Wilson and husband Jim of Cocoa Beach, FL; and Bernice Podroza and husband Richard of Eveleth, MN; sisters, Sophie Zimmerman and Rose Borash both of Little Falls, and Lucy Welner of South St. Paul, MN; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John on March 3, 1989; son Anthony; infant daughter; grandson Jon Wilson; brothers, John, Leo and Vince, Jr.; sisters, Anna, Stella and Agnes.

Casketbearers were Mary’s grandsons, Tom Lattimer, John Imgrund, John Rudek, Jim Wilson, David Brown and David Imgrund. Giftbearers were granddaughters, Cindy Kolkind, Connie Hoheisel and Linda Poissant.

Gerald F. Lattimer

Gerald F. Lattimer, age 58, a resident of Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Little Falls, MN, (Fort Ripley) died January 5 at Fairview Riverside Hospital, after a two-year struggle with leukemia and COPD.

Funeral services were held at St. Joan of Arc on January 8 followed by military rites at Fort Snelling Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.

Jerry enjoyed many outdoors sports including baseball, horseshoes, hunting and fishing. Jerry was born to Frank and Cora (Casperson) Lattimer, October 29, 1939. He was married to Judy Huver, September 4, 1965, at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Hillman. Jerry served in the Army from June 1963 through June 1965.

Survivors include his wife Judy; son Gabriel and daughter, Jackie and husband Steve Folta and four grandchildren—Jesse and Jasmine Lattimer and Tom and Brandon Folta; his mother, Cora Lattimer; brothers, George and Gale; sisters, Joan Strahl, Julie Ann Doucette and Joyce Lundell and many nieces and nephews.

Casketbearers were Gabriel Lattimer, Steve Folta, Mike Beske, Mike McGuire, Scottie Lattimer and Billy Lattimer.
