Mark Steven Samskar
Services were held last week for Mark Steven Samskar. The Pike Lake resident and 1977 Proctor High School graduate, died unexpectedly on Mon., May 12, 2003, in his home. He was 44.

He was born in Duluth Oct. 3, 1958, to Wayne and Dorothy (Nelsen) Samskar. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Air National Guard. Mark had a long and distinguished military career serving in many locations and positions for over 25 years. He obtained skills in several aircraft maintenance fields. He worked on communication and navigation systems and also maintained weapon guidance systems from 1977 to 1991. He worked as an aircrew egress system craftsman from 1992 to 2000. He trained to become an aircraft electrician, where he was recently employed by the Minnesota Air National Guard as a technician at the 148th Fighter Wing. Mark also earned his Airframe and powerplant certification. He served 12 years in California prior to returning to Duluth in 1991. He had a passion for snowmobiling and for nights on Pike Lake. He was a handyman extraordinaire. He was a member of Pike Lake Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, a member of the Reservoir Riders Snowmobile Club, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a special aunt, Esther Wilson.

He is survived by his wife Toni, daughter Jessica, stepchildren Cassie and Jesse Gilberg, all at home, his parents Wayne and Dorothy Samskar of Duluth, his sister Dorian (Bill) Samskar Jordan and their children Julia and Will of Appleton, Wis.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Grand Forks Air Force Base Honor Guard Team. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Blaine Herbert Olson
Services were held earlier this week for Blaine Herbert Olson. The Proctor resident died Thurs., May 29, 2003 in a Duluth hospice. He was 73.

He was born in Duluth. He was an area resident most of his life. Blaine left school after the ninth grade in order to help support his mother after the sudden death of his father, as his brother was serving in the war. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a bridge operator. He was a Corporal Technician in the Korean War and served in a M.A.S.H. unit as a mechanic and ambulance driver. He worked for Indianhead Trucking and Trans Inc. Trucking as a transport driver. He later worked at Johnson Elevator Company and R. & O. Elevators as a mechanic and the Univ. of Minn., Duluth as an elevator maintenance mechanic until his retirement.

He is survived by his brother Howard Woodrow Olson of Lindstrom, Minn.; six nieces and nephews, Allison Churchill of Duluth, Bobbi (Dean) Pirkola of Esko, Beverly Pearson of Pequot Lakes, Tom (Julie) Olson of Spring Lake Park, John (Nancy) Lunke of Saginaw and Gerald (Marlene) Lunke of Duluth; a very special person in his life, Penny (Bill) Hietala of Lakeland, his dog Sparky; many great-nieces and great-nephews and many very dear friends.

Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Military honors were accorded.

Alice Emily McNeil
Norman McNeil of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Alice Emily McNeil. She died Thurs., May 29, 2003 in Duluth at the age of 92.

She was born in Keewatin. She married Norman A. McNeil in 1929 in Virginia. The McNeil family moved to Duluth in 1947. Alice was a homemaker. She was also involved in the ladies auxiliary of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She is also survived by another son, Gerald L. of Gordon, Wis., three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Florence 'Flo' Nettleton
Florence 'Flo' Nettleton, 72, of W. 6th. St., died peacefully on Sun, June 1, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospice Unit.

She was born in Duluth to Martin and Hilda Anderson. Florence was a life long arrea resident. She tended bar for the American Legion for 20 years and was a former member of the Moose. Florence was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, and two sisters

Surviving are five sons, four daughters, one brother, two sisters and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. service Thurs., June 5, 2003, in Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Edward B. Dishington
Services will be held on June 28 at 3 p.m. for Edward B. Dishington. He died in his Proctor home Sun., May 25, 2003. He was 95.

He was born in Fertile Township, Worth County, Iowa. During the 1930's he worked for the CCC in various states, until moving to Duluth in 1941. He worked as an electrician for U.S. Steel for several years and at St. Mary's Hospital as an electrical and refrigeration inspector for 18 years, retiring from there in 1973.

Survivors include sons James (Lera) of Groton, Mass., and Gerald (Kathy) of Penryn, Calif., daughters Patricia Dishington of Duluth and Sunny Polling of Proctor, brother Henry of Santa Fe, Texas, sister Bernice Ward of Federal Way, Wash., five grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Inurnment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Lisa Marie Voss
Services were held for Lisa Marie Voss of Pike Lake. She died Mon., June 2, 2003, in St. Mary's Hospice, surrounded by family and friends. She was 39.

She was born in Buena Park, Calif., on Oct. 14, 1963, to Charles E. and Suzanne Goldsworthy Voss. She was a lifelong resident of Duluth, attending Congdon Park Elementary, Ordean Jr. High and Cathedral (Marshall) High School, class of 1982. She enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, fishing, golf and tennis, and also movies books and puzzles.

She is survived by her parents Chuck and Sue, an older brother Chuck Voss Jr., his wife Nayda and their four children, her sister Kathy Voss Latour, and her children Jessica and Michael.

Kenneth D. Bergquist
Paul Bergquist of Saginaw is mourning the death of his father Kenneth D. Bergquist of Edgewood Vista, formerly of Chambersburg Ave. He died Tues., June 3, 2002, in St. Luke's Hospital, as a result of complications of lung cancer. He was 82.

He was born in Duluth and was a lifelong Duluth resident and a 1940 graduate of Denfeld High School. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of WW II, serving in North Africa and Italy with Headquarters Squadron, 49th Bomb Wing of the 15th Air Force, achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant. Ken had been an employee of the former Heule Brothers Auto Parts and the Duluth Superior Transit Company. He was a firefighter for the Duluth Fire Department, retiring in 1982, as captain, after 27 years service. He had also worked on a part time basis for F&I Sales, testing and refilling fire extinguishers. Ken married Aileen Johnson in 1943. He was a lifelong member of First Covenant Church, member of Duluth Firefighters Retirees Association and a former member of the International Association of Firefighters Local No. 101.

Survivors also include his wife, three other children, a sister, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Interment Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard and a Final Alarm Salute by the Duluth Fire Honor Guard. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Donnabell Faye Kilpela
Brenda Stokke of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of her stepmother, Donnabell Faye Kilpela. She died Thurs., June 5, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 73.

She was born in Castana, Iowa, and grew up in Wrenshall. She married Louis J. Young on Oct. 25, 1946. She lived in Palo where she was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Palo and worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory in both Eveleth and Virginia. Louis preceded her in death in 1978. She later married Roy Kilpela in Sioux Falls, S.D., and they made their home in Cloquet. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Eagles Auxiliary.

She is also survived by her husband, a son, a daughter, three other stepchildren, four sisters, a brother, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Rauha Cemetery in Palo, Minn.

Annabelle Faye Sutherland
Kathleen Tondryk of Saginaw is mourning the death of her mother, Annabelle Faye Sutherland. The lifelong Cloquet resident died Thurs., June 12, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 91.

She was born in Cloquet. Annabelle married Evan Sutherland in 1930. She had been employed at Diamond Match in Cloquet and retired after 36 years of service. Annabelle was past president of the Local Union 970, and the Cloquet Eagles Auxiliary, served as captain of the Eagles Drill Team and was a member of the Cloquet Moose Lodge.

Annabelle is also survived by another daughter, one sister, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Agnes Irene Strom
Services will be held today, Thurs., for Agnes Irene Strom, formerly of Midway Road. She died Tues., July 1 in Bayshore Health Center. She was 88.

He was born in Eveleth in 1915 and graduated in 1933 from the Eveleth High School. She moved to Duluth in 1934. She married Roy Strom in 1935 in Proctor. She was a constituent member of Forbes United Methodist Church.

She is survived by sons Donald (Mary) of Esko, William (Maureen) of Duluth, David (Dixie) of Hermantown and Richard (Gail) of R.I., 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9:00 until the 10:00 a.m. service in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral and Cremation Services.

Sheila M. Jauhola
A memorial service was held Tuesday for Sheila M. Jauhola of Proctor. She died at St. Mary's Medical Center on Sun., June 29, 2003. She was 56.

Sheila was born and raised in Eveleth, Minn. and had lived in the Proctor and Duluth area since 1968. She was a graduate of UMD and worked as a substitute teacher in Duluth and Proctor. She was also employed by J.C. Penney.

Sheila is survived by her husband of 36 years, Kenneth, a daughter Kristen (Tim) Biles of Duluth, a son Jason (Patti) Jauhola of Superior, seven grandchildren, a sister Darlene (Guy) Bradt of Eveleth, Minn. and special father-in-law Melvin Jauhola.
