Herman Poser
Herman E. Poser, Jr., age 71, a resident of Pierz, MN, died January 11, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 15 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny and Father Charles Padatruruthy concelebrating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Herman was born October 22, 1926, in Buh Township, MN, where he lived and farmed all his life. He was united in marriage with Esther Suess on June 8, 1948, in Buckman, MN. Herman was employed with the railroad for a few years prior to working for Gottwalt Lumber Company for 10 years along with farming. He retired from farming in 1980. Herman enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Pierz; a son, Ernie Poser and wife Trudy of Buckman; daughters, Iris Kowalzek and husband Larry of Pierz; Beverly Sadlovsky and husband Gary of Newport, MN, Donna Herald and husband Bob of Buckman and Janice Henagin and husband Sidney of Pierz; brothers, Edmund, Urban and Leonard, all of Pierz and Benedict and Arnold, both of West Allic, WI; sisters, Alma Littlefield of Iowa and Adeline Przybilla of West Allis, WI; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Theresia Zierer (Stuckmayer); infant daughter; brothers, Raymond and Felix and sisters, Theresia, Barbara and Ierne.

Honorary casketbearers were Irving Sauer, Victor Hoffman, Daryl Brinks, Reinie Jutz, Roger Haney and Donny Bleichner.

Casketbearers were Jeff Suess, Bruce Poser, Sid Henagin, Sev Poser, Jason Sadlovsky and John Schmidtbauer.

Peter Gaalswyk
Peter ‘Pete’ Gaalswyk, age 84, a resident of May Township, rural Pillager, MN, died January 14, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held January 19 at Lakewood Evangel-ical Free Church in Baxter, MN with Pastor Randy Ahlberg officiating. Burial followed in the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager. Military rites were provided by Brainerd American Legion Post #255.

Pete Gaalswyk was born on July 26, 1913, in Lyn County, IA, son of the late Cornelis and Cornelia (Bakker) Gaalswyk. He grew up and attended school in Northwestern Iowa and, in 1936, moved to Martin County in southern Minnesota where he farmed until 1941 when he entered the U.S. Navy. He served as Chief Motor Machinist Mate aboard the USS Gardoqui during the Pacific Theater of WW II. Following his discharge in 1945, Pete returned to Southern Minnesota and continued to farm. He was united in marriage to Henriette Scholten on April 2, 1950, in Welcome, MN. They continued to live and farm in Martin County until 1953 when they moved to their farm west of Pillager. Pete retired from farming in 1993, but continued to live on the family farm and assist with daily activities. Pete was a member of the Lakewood Evangelical Free Church in Baxter, former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brainerd from 1954-1985, where he served on the Elder Board, was a member of American Legion Post #100 in Pillager and a member of the Minnesota Farmers Union. He served on several committees and boards throughout the area including: Pillager School Board for 24 years, nine as chairman, Advisory Board for the Freshwater Education Co-op, the Steering & Advisory Committee for the Central Minnesota Demon-stration and Research Irrigation Farm, both in Staples, MN, the EXSU-5, Cass County Zoning Variance Committee, the Cass County Housing and Redevelop-ment Authority Board, as well as the Cass County Citizens Jail Advisory Committee. He was named Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1991. Pete enjoyed helping others and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Henriette; five sons, Fred (Donna) Gaalswyk of Rock Valley, IA, Neal (Kathy) Gaalswyk of East Gull Lake, MN, John Gaalswyk of Walker, MN, Donald (Beverly) Gaalswyk of Pillager and Law-rence Gaalswyk of Minneapolis, MN; three daughters, Cora Jean (Jerry) Leenheer of Golden, CO., Lois (Dean) Kasperson of Willmar, MN, and Audrey Gaalswyk of Pillager; sixteen grandchildren; five brothers, Marion Gaalswyk of St. James, MN, Casey Gaalswyk of Motley, MN, Arie Gaalswyk of Sioux Falls, SD, Henry Gaalswyk of Welcome, MN and John Gaalswyk of Mountain Lake, MN; three sisters, Greta Jagodzinske of Welcome, Marie Uhlig of Trimont, MN, and Katy Olsen of Sherburn, MN; special nephew, Dave (Jennifer) Gaalswyk of Pillager, as well as several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, an infant, Hendrika and a three-year-old, Nancy Joy; his parents; and two brothers, Teunis and Jacob.

Casketbearers were David Gaalswyk, Edlin Gaalswyk, Maynard Jagodzinske, Jerry Leenheer, Dean Kasperson and Brian Kasperson.

Elizabeth Weber
Elizabeth Weber, age 99, a resident of Pierz, MN, died June 30, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held July 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Elizabeth was born November 19, 1898, in New Ulm, MN, to the late John and Theresia (Portner) Dietz. She was united in marriage to John S. Weber January 10, 1922, in New Ulm. The couple moved to Pierz in February, 1929. She moved to the Alverna Apartments in Little Falls in 1984, and to St. Otto’s Care Center in 1993 where she resided until her death. She enjoyed quiltmaking, gardening, flowers and letter writing. She was secretary of the Catholic Aid Society for 30 years. She cooked for the Catholic schools of Pierz. She was a 4-H leader. She was a member of Christian Women and the Catholic Aid Society. She was a Grand Marshal for the Oktoberfest parade in Pierz in 1994.

Survivors include her sons, John and Naomi Weber of Salem, OR, Leo and Rosetta Weber of Pierz, Ted and Arlene Weber of Pierz, Bernard and Frances Weber of St. Cloud, MN, Roger and Mary of Sauk Rapids, MN, and Stephen and Francia of Roseville, MN; daughters, Mary Konen and husband Alfred of Little Falls, and, Theresa Zenner and husband Donald of Little Falls; 33 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John in 1970; infant son, Andrew in 1923; three brothers, Otto, Albert and Alfred Dietz and sisters, Eleanora Gulden and Annie Schreiner.

Pallbearers were grandchildren. Lector was Kevin Zenner.

Alice V. Bryniarski
Alice V. Bryniarski, age 78, a resident of Randall, MN, died July 4, 1998, at her home in Parker Township, Morrison County.

A Mass of Christian burial was held July 7, at St. James Catholic Church in Randall with the Rev. Harold Kost officiating. Burial was in the Randall City Cemetery.

Alice V. Bryniarski was born July 3, 1920, in Todd County, MN, to the late Simon and Katherine (Jarosh) Baron. She grew up in Todd County, near Browerville, MN, and attended a country school less than one mile from her family home. Following her schooling, Alice moved to Minneapolis, MN, and worked as a housekeeper. She returned to the Browerville area where she met and married Frederick “Fred” W. Bryniarski on August 28, 1940, in Browerville. Following their marriage, Alice and Fred lived and farmed in Little Elk Township, Todd County for 30 years. In 1979, the couple moved to their present home in Parker Township, Morrison County, MN, just west of Randall where she resided until her death. Alice was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Randall and enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, crocheting and her flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Fred; son, James Bryniarski and wife Marilyn of Browerville; daughter, Darlene Hegg and husband David of Randall, MN; sister, Angeline Seith of Milwaukee, WI; brothers, Pete Baron and wife Marlyn of Osakis, MN; Eddie Baron of Browerville; five grandchildren and six-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joe, Sam, John and Frank Baron and a sister, Anna Kensy.

Casketbearers were Janet Retka, Rick Hegg, Sandy Keller, Joe Brynierski, Cindy Miller and Ed Kensy.

Peter Malek
Peter Malek, age 79, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died July 3, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held July 6, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father LeRoy Kremer officiating. Burial was at Belle Prairie Cemetery.

Peter was born May 31, 1919, in Foley, MN, to John and Katherine (Ratke) Malek. His many careers included positions with Northern Pipe in Chicago, IL., Brunswick/ Larson Boats, and the Burlington Northern Railroad. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 as an Armed Guard Gunner on a Merchant Marine vessel and traveled around the world seven times. Pete was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife Adeline; sons, Steven and wife Kathy of Oconomowoc, WI, Eldon and wife Lois of Fort Ripley, MN; daughters, Audrey and husband Paul Miller of Dellwood, MN and Linda and husband William Serie of Little Falls; five grandsons, William, Steven, and Douglas Serie, and Jacob and Nathan Malek; two step-granddaughters, Stacy and Christy Schwingham-mer; and great-granddaughter, Tristen (Zimmerman) Serie; brothers, Chester of Crystal, MN; and twin brother, Paul of Menahga; sisters, Mary DeRoss of Ohio, and Genevieve Hoffman of St. Cloud, MN.

He was preceded in death by his son, Felix; his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers were grandsons, William, Steven, and Douglas Serie and Jacob and Nathan Malek, and nephew Matthew Freudenrich.

Thomas Joseph Baumgartner
Thomas Joseph Baumgartner, age 38, a resident of Motley, MN, died at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 7, 1998, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley, with Father Robert Landsberger officiating.

Thomas Joseph Baumgartner was born on May 25, 1960, in Staples, MN. He grew up on the family farm north of Motley and attended the Staples School, graduating with the class of 1978. He had farmed in the area, worked at the Sales Barn, and for Manion Lumber and Truss in Pillager. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley.

Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth, of Staples; five brothers, Joseph Baumgartner of Robards, KT, Peter Baumgartner of Motley, Paul Baumgartner of Monticello, MN, Robert Baumgartner of Lake Shore, MN, and Lawrence Baumgartner, Jr., of Motley, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence.

Ann Virginia Zytkovicz
Ann Virginia Zytkovicz died at the Mille Lacs Nursing Home in Onamia, MN on July 1, 1998, at the age of 85 years.

Funeral services were held July 3, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Onamia, MN, with Father William McNiff officiating. Interment followed at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Music was provided by Jeff Zytkovicz and Sue Swanson.

Ann was born on December 28, 1912, to Thomas and Mary (Gomulak) Zytkovicz in Minneapolis, MN. She grew up in the Onamia area and attended school at the Johnsdale Country School. When she had completed her education, she moved to Minneapolis where she worked at Dayton’s Department Store. She also worked at Abbott Northwestern Hospital for 16 years. She enjoyed traveling by taking many Greyhound bus tours. She also made many trips to Guadeloupe, Mexico, and took a trip to Palestine.

Survivors include her sister, Magdeline and husband Bud Swanson of Onamia; brother, Joseph Zytkovicz of Oak Grove, MN, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Stanley, Mike, and Frank.

Casketbearers included Mike Zytkovicz, John Swanson, Adam Swanson, Raymond Swanson, Josie Zytkovicz and Joe Norman.
