Irene Measure
Irene I. Measure, age 76, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died November 22, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial was held November 25 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. Burial took place in Libby, MT.

Irene was born November 6, 1921, in Little Falls to the late Stanley and Rose (Gastecki) Measure. The family moved to Libby when Irene was a young girl. She grew up and attended school in Libby. After graduating from high school, Irene attended secretarial school. After completing her schooling, she worked for Northern Pacific Freight in Seattle, WA. She also worked for Library for the Blind in Seattle. Irene retired to the Little Falls area where she was born. She has been a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center for the past several years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading and spending time doing religious studies.

Survivors include her brother, Alfred Measure of Seattle; nieces, Carole Ortiz of Albuquerque, NM, Kathy Measure of Moraga, CA, and Dorthea I. Ploeger of Hudson, WI; nephews, Mat Gamradt, Jr., of Shoreview, MN, and Leonard Gamradt of Little Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Rose (Gastecki) Measure; sister, Angeline Gamradt; a nephew and a niece.

Calvin W. Karnes
Calvin W. Karnes, age 70, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Swanville, MN, died November 20, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were held on November 24 at United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle, MN where Rev. Hilda Parks officiated. Burial followed in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calvin Karnes was born May 28, 1927, in Grey Eagle to John and Erma (Fuller) Karnes. He was united in marriage to Hilda Philipsek on November 12, 1969, in South Dakota. He was em-ployed as a meat cutter for Coborn’s in Sauk Rapids, MN. He was a member of United Metho-dist Church in Grey Eagle.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda Karnes of Little Falls; 12 children, Jean Rosch, of Bowlus, MN, Peggy Ross of Osakis, MN, Connie Hutchens of Alexandria, MN, Kathy Johnson of Hot Springs, SD, Oscar Karnes of Carlos, MN, Lisa Schulke of Parkers Prairie, MN, Lonnie Karnes of Burtrum, MN, Julie Karnes of Little Falls, Linda Winkelman of Avon, MN, James Philipsek of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Dennis Philipsek of Eagan, MN and Gloria Johnson of Clearwater, MN; brothers and sisters, Clayton Karnes of Long Prairie, MN, Harriet Walburn of Grey Eagle, Lawrence Karnes of St. Paul, MN, Ivan Karnes of St. Cloud, MN, James Karnes of Lincoln, NE, Jeanette Krey of Waite Park, MN, Ella Mae Bartz of Waite Park, MN, Hoyt Karnes of Swanville; 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Calvin Bruce Karnes and daughter, Sandra Karnes.

Casketbearers were grandchildren.

Verna Wallace

Verna Dahl Wallace, age 79, died August 24, 1997, in Santa Monica, CA, after a long and brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A memorial service was held at Church of Christ, Congregational in Newington, CT, September 20. Her final place of rest is Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, CT.

Verna was born Verna Lorraine Johnson in Little Falls, MN, on February 23, 1918. She was the daughter of Mary (Berglund) and Gustaf Johnson and grew up on the family farm in Freedhem, MN. After graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, she joined the Navy as a WAVE. During World War II, she trained aviators at bases in Kansas, Texas and Hawaii. She later settled in Connecticut, where she spent 43 years as a resident of Newington. She was a social worker with the Newington Crippled Children’s Hospital and the V.A. Hospital. She loved gardening, cooking, music, poetry, art and theater and was deeply concerned with social issues. She served as president of the Newington Chapter of the League of Women Voters and as chairman of the Fair Housing Committee of the Newington Human Relations Council. She opened her family home to foreign exchange students from Chile, Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia. An active member of The Church of Christ, Congregational, her generous heart and concern for others endeared her to many. She was married twice, first to Magnus G. Dahl, an engineer with Arrow Hart & Hegeman, who died in 1979; then in 1985 to John W. Wallace, former Newington superintendent of schools who died in 1993. Survivors include her loving children, Kirsten M. Dahl of Santa Monica and Miles G. Dahl of Merrimack, NH; grandson, Michael G. Dahl; sisters and brothers, Florence Schmidt of Miami, FL, Doris Tofsly of McIntosh, MN, Edward Johnson of Edina, MN, and Danford and Warren Johnson, both of Little Falls; many nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Clifford Dahl, Rhoda Karrer and Waldermar Dahl and their children and grandchildren.

Thelma Ryman

Thelma V. Ryman, age 78, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 15, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held October 17 at St. Otto’s Care Center with the Rev. Suzanne Cekalla officiating. Interment was in Scandia Valley Cemetery.

Thelma was born December 18, 1918, in Hastings, MN, to the late Ortell O. and Bertha M. (Powers) Hamer. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Minneapolis, MN. She attended and graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis. After graduation she moved to Chicago and attended fashion design school, returned to Minneapolis continuing her education at the University of Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Lin Brown. They made their home on the north shore of Lake Superior. Lin died in 1957. In 1959 Thelma moved to Minneapolis. She later met and was united in marriage to Al Ryman on September 8, 1965. Following their marriage, the couple moved to LaPorte, MN, and retired. Thelma continued as a tax assessor for Hubbard County. After her husband Al’s death on July 3, 1983, she moved to Morrison County, in Scandia Valley Township, living with her daughter and son-in-law, Judy Lynn and Gene Hanson on Fish Trap Lake. She moved to the Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls and on April 1, 1997, she became a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, residing there until her death. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing bridge and she will always be remembered as a good listener.

Survivors include daughters, Judy Lynn Hanson and husband Gene of Motley, MN, and Linda “Lynn” Ross and husband Ralph of New Brighton, MN; grandchildren, Stephanie Evans and husband Bob of Superior, WI, Kimberley Carlson and husband Jason of Stanchfield, MN, and Vince and Jana Hanson, Jaysen and Lauri Short and their families, all of Idaho; great-grandchild, Eric Evans; dear friends, Suzy and Ronnie Salo of Fridley, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lin and husband, Al; parents and twin brothers, Earle H. Hamer and Merle F. Hamer.

Anthony Eckes

Anthony Eckes, age 9, a resident of rural Motley, MN, died October 18, 1997, near his home.

Funeral services were held October 22 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley with Father Robert Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Swan Valley Cemetery near Leader, MN.

Anthony Michael Eckes was born in Nuernberg, Germany, on October 3, 1988, to Gregory and Alexandra (Stimach) Eckes. With his family he lived in Nuernberg, Ft. Hood, Texas, and Berlin, Germany before moving to rural Motley in January of 1995. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and was a fourth grader at Staples North Elementary School.

Survivors include his parents, Gregory and Alexandra Eckes of Motley; grandparents, Matt Stimach of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Inge Stimach of Fuengirola, Spain, and Louis Eckes of Motley; great-grandparents, Hans and Betty Messthaler of Nuernberg, Germany. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Peggy Eckes.

Valeria Waytashek

Valeria Waytashek, age 74, a resident of Hillman, MN, formerly of the Pierz, MN area, died October 11, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were October 14, 1997, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Valeria was born July 25, 1923, in Rice, MN, to the late Lawrence and Ann (Schafer) Aschenbrener. She attended school in Rice and at the age of 17 she taught in a country school. She was united in marriage to Jerome John Waytashek on September 19, 1943. They lived in the Pierz area until 1986. During that time, she taught school in Pierz and Lastrup. She owned and operated an antique store in Little Falls, MN. Valeria sold German Mutual storm insurance, she was a stockbroker and she farmed with her husband north of Pierz. After retiring, they moved to Fort Myers, FL, and summered in the Hillman area. She enjoyed painting, collecting antiques, book work and spending time with her family. Varleria was a member of Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her sons, Roger and wife Fran of Cambridge, MN; Paul and wife Connie of Little Falls; Wayne of Cambridge, MN; daughters, Bonnie Holtslander and companion Bruce of Duluth, MN; Diane Barber of Phoenix, AZ; Debra Zipf and husband Matt of Plymouth, MN; Mari Jo Poster and husband John of Pierz; sons-in-law, Harvey Patterson of Rogers, MN and Raymond Woitalla of Harding, MN; sisters, Ermma Merenda and husband Joe of New York, LaVerne Kowalczyk and husband Clarence of Royalton, MN, Sally Nouis and husband Bob of Texas, Grace Berthelemy and husband Al of Royalton, MN; brothers, Erwin Aschenbrener and wife Dedris of California, Robert Aschenbrener and wife Elsie of North Dakota; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerome in 1991; three daughters, Laurie in 1977, Sylvia in 1992 and Gloria in 1997; great-granddaughter, Beth-any in 1994; brothers, Roman (Buddy) and Clarence Aschenbrener.

Honorary pallbearers were Sidney and Rita Winscher.

Pallbearers were Clarence and LaVerne Kowalczyk, Al and Grace Barthelemy and Jim and Jan Waytashek.

Ann E. Gerlach

Ann E. Gerlach, age 74, a resident of New Haven, WV, and formerly of Little Falls, MN, died September 29, 1997, at Pleasant Valley Hospital in New Haven.

Graveside services were held October 3, 1997, at the Broad Run Cemetery with Pastor George Weirick officiating. Burial was in the Broad Run Cemetery.

Ann was born March 9, 1923, in Flagstaff, ND, to Iver and Ann Johnson.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Darrell B. and Charlotte Gerlach of New Haven, WV, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Rick W. Swanson Rick W. Swanson, age 38, a resident of Brainerd, MN died October 18, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held October 21, at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with Reverend Laurence Foote officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Rick was born in Duluth, MN on November 14, 1958, to Merle (Bill) and Joanne (Bahr) Swanson. He was a graduate of Brainerd High School. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force and attended Brainerd Vocational School for two years.

Survivors include his parents, Merle (Bill) and Joanne Swanson of Brainerd; special daughter, Theresa Novik of Brainerd; sister, Debbie Swanson Battin of Brainerd; grandmother, Mabel Bahr Bell of Brainerd; grandfather, Clifford Swanson of Washington; and, three nieces. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roy H. Bahr.

Richard Canton

Richard Lee Canton, age 64, a resident of rural Cushing, MN died on October 12, 1997, at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral services were held October 17 at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville, MN. Interment services were held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley immediately following the funeral service. Military honors were provided by the United States Marine Corps.

Richard was born February 11, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN to Chris and Mathilda (Dahl) Canton. He was married to Iva Canterberry in Buford, SC on May 21, 1955. Richard was in the Marines for 22 years, serving his country in Korea and in Vietnam, he was also stationed all over the United States.

Survivors include his wife, Iva of Cushing; daughter, Janet of Cushing; grandchildren, Serena Christiansen, Richard, Kristal and Michelle Canton; brothers, Percy (Alice) of Orange, CA; Jay (Agnes) of Minneapolis; Robert (Dorothy) of Battleground, WA; sisters, Irene (Orville) Bull of Vancouver, WA; Marcella Burg and Margery Turner of Minneapolis; Elaine Hager of Browerville; Alice Johnson of Alexandria, MN and Elvira (Dave) Strandmark of Richfield, MN. Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Montine; brother, Ernest and sister, Sophie Lund.
