Kenneth Chapin

Kenneth Ray Chapin, age 69, a resident of Winston, OR, formerly of Leader, MN, died in his brother’s home in Motley, MN (after arriving for a family reunion) October 16, 1997.

Services were held October 20, at the Motley Methodist Church with Reverend Larry Hager officiating. Burial was in the Poplar Cemetery.

Kenneth Ray Chapin was born on July 7, 1928, in Poplar, MN, to the late Harold and Mamie (Matthews) Chapin. He married Delwyn Carey on July 14, 1947, in Staples, MN. He farmed on the family farm near Poplar. He then moved his young family to Winston in August of 1959; however, his heart was always in the Poplar area. He worked for Plywood Mill in Roseburg, OR, for the city of Winston, then the Bureau of Public Roads, retiring after a serious accident in 1969. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 14, of this year. He found comfort in reading his Bible and being faithful in prayers. Besides his love for Minnesota, Kenneth also enjoyed visiting with friends. He never knew a stranger. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Delwyn; four daughters, Peggy (Arlie) Paulson and Joanne (Daniel) Couch, both of Winston, Carol (David) Huber of Columbus, OH, and Anita (Robert) Dethlefs of Portland, OR; 11 grandchildren, Pamela Nix, Kenny Paulson, Rachel and Chrissy Sheline, Rebecca, Joshua and Caleb Couch, Aaron, Zachary and Alicia Dethlefs (and one on the way), a great-grandson, Austin Nix. Also his sister-in-law, Iras Chapin; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Darrell Ray; one daughter, Cindy Kay; one sister Ardith McLaughlin; two brothers, Leonard and Bernard Chapin.

Arnold Boser
Arnold Boser, age 73, a resident of New Brighton, MN, died August 31, 1997.

Funeral services were held September 3 at the Hillside Memoriam Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis, MN. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery.

Arnold was born February 3, 1924, in Pierz, MN.

Survivors include his wife, Lilah; sons, Dan and Robert; daughters, Lynda Boser and Kathy Sigsworth and husband George; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold, Victor and Archie; sisters, Bernadine, Caroline, Betty, Dorothy, Cecelia and Eleanor and several other relatives and friends.

Anna Gross

Anna Mary Gross, age 86, a resident of Pierz, MN, died August 25, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held August 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Harding, MN.

Anna was born on August 26, 1910, in Benton County, MN, to the late Michael and Sophie (Gondeck) Sufka. She grew up and attended country school in the Morrill area. She was united in marriage to Louis J. Gross in 1931 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Morrill. The couple made their home in the Hillman, MN, area where they farmed for 29 years. Louis died in 1965. Anna moved to Little Falls where she worked at the Hub Cafe for a number of years. She took nurse’s aide training and worked at the Lutheran Senior Citizens Center in Little Falls as a nurse’s aide for 17 years. She also volunteered at St. Otto’s Care Center and St. Francis Convent. After her retirement she was involved in caregiving for a number of sick people and babysitting for various families in Little Falls. She entered St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz in 1992 where she resided until her death. Anna’s hobbies included her flower and vegetable gardens, crocheting, knitting socks and mittens from the homegrown sheep’s wool, raising and selling canaries and coffee with friends. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls and was a 50-year member of the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her sons, Louis E. Gross and wife Jo Ann of Hillman and Leander L. Gross and wife Marlies of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters, Mary Ann Perleberg and husband Leo of Pierz and Lorraine Eide of Hartford, MI; brother, Albert Sufka of Little Falls; sisters, Francis Kowalczyk of Harding, Catherine Young of Harding and Emma Burrows of Brainerd, MN; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis J. Gross; parents; brothers, Louie, Frank, Gus and Edward Sufka; sister, Agnes Sufka and great-grandson, Matthew Hales.

Pallbearers were Todd, Tim and Tony Gross and Jim, David, John, Bob and Paul Perleberg.

Maurice Van Houtte

Maurice O. (Mike) Van Houtte, a resident of Moorhead, MN, died August 28, 1997, at Dakota Heartland in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services were held August 31 in the Church of the Nativity in Fargo. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Pierz, MN.

Mike was born October 20, 1921, in Detroit, MI. He lived there until the age of 12 when he moved to New Baltimore, MI. Mike Van Houtte and Diggy Faust of Genola, MN, were married on January 24, 1942, in New Baltimore. After their wedding, they lived in Mt. Clemens, MI, until Mike entered the U.S. Army in October of 1942. He served with the 113th Mechanized Cavalry in the European Theater during World War II. After his discharge in 1945 he returned to Mt. Clemens where he was employed by Wonderbread and Mills Bakery. In 1956 he and Diggy were transferred to Davison, MI, where he continued to work for Mills Bakery until he joined Prudential Life Insurance in 1960. They moved to Champaign, IL, in 1965 where Mike worked for United Life and Accident Insurance Company. In 1969 they came to Fargo and Mike began work with Pioneer Mutual of Fargo where he remained until his retirement in 1985. He was ordained with the first class of the Permanent Deaconate of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo in 1979 and had served the Church of the Nativity in Fargo since that time.

Survivors include his wife, Edigna (Diggy) Van Houtte of Moorhead; children, Maurice J. Van Houtte and wife Melodye of Park Rapids, MN, Pamela Lipe and husband Edward of Davison, MI, Kathy Van Houtte of Fayetteville, AR, and Mary Van Houtte-Moyemont and husband Terry of Bainbridge Island, WA; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Dorothy Crawford of Zephyr Hills, FL, and Janice Rosso and husband Pat of New Haven, MI.

Leo Zimmermann

Leo Donald Zimmermann, age 75, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 28, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held September 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Leo was born December 22, 1921, in Agram Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Henry and Lillian (Schlag) Zimmermann. He grew up in Agram Township and attended Little Falls High School. After his father’s death in 1940 he helped his mother and sisters farm the family farm. He was united in marriage to Florence M. Kempenich on November 7, 1946, at St. James Catholic Church in Randall, MN. Following their marriage, he continued farming and he also worked at Larson Boats and Crestliner Boats in Little Falls, residing in Agram Township until his death. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Minnesota Farmers Union of which he served as chairman for several years, member of the National Farmers Organization, COACT, Democratic Farmer Labor Party, was instrumental in founding, establishing and was the moving force behind the Minnesota Dairy Producers Board which helped farmers to get better prices for their milk and always worked hard to help farmers establish and earn fair prices for their crops.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; sons, Henry of LaPorte, CO, Daniel and wife Carolyn of Sullivan, MO, David and wife Laure of Sobieski, MN, Dean of Little Falls, MN, Steven of Sullivan, MO, Gale and wife Gina of Little Falls, Gary of Sartell, MN, and Leo R. and wife Cheryl of St. Cloud, MN; daughter, Joanie Conway and husband Joe of Atwater, MN; sisters, Dorothy Hinrichs of Springdale, AR, Lorraine Stephenson of San Diego, CA, and Joan Mason of Grand Rapids, MN; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William “Billy” and infant son Thomas and a sister Hazel Haller.

Casketbearers were Myrl Fairbrother, Joe Griesch, Don Pylkkanen, DelRay Sweeney, Bob Young and Gene Young.

John Patyk

John Patyk, age 81, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died April 14, 1998, at his residence in Little Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 18 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Harold Kost officiating. Burial was at Our Lady of Lourdes parish cemetery.

John was born June 9, 1916, in Little Falls to the late Adam and Mary (Yendraszak) Patyk. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School and Little Falls High School. John married La Verne Ginter on July 17, 1945, in Little Falls. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe and North Africa during WWII, and was honorably discharged on August 21, 1945. He was employed at Victor Clothing Company in 1949 until he retired in 1978. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and loved being with his family and friends. John enjoyed bowling, being outdoors, especially walking and gardening. He served his parish faithfully throughout his lifetime. He was a life member of American Legion Post 46, VFW Post 1112, DAV Chapter 12 and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his daughters, Kathy Wells and husband Dave of White Bear Lake, MN, Mary Hofstetter and husband Ken of Paradise Valley, AZ, and Terry Witt and husband Ron of Little Falls; brothers, Leonard of Spokane, WA, Edward of Sauk Centre, MN, Stanley of Sauk Centre, and Chester of Minneapolis; sisters, Eleanore Zak of Minneapolis, Delores Hoberg of Preston, MN, Mary Ann Buckner of San Jose, CA, Joan Wadsworth of Brookings, OR and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVerne; son, Tommy; half-sister, Frances Bajinski and sisters, Irene Ronketti and Helen LeDoux.

Casketbearers were his grandchildren, Mark, John, Michael, Matthew and Katie Wells and Julie and Christopher Witt.

Robert Watkins

Robert “Bob” Hezekiah Watkins, a resident of Fort Dodge, IA, died April 7, 1998, at Trinity Regional Hospital.

Services were held April 10 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Allen E. Hermeier officiating. Burial was in Memorial Pak Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 1856.

Robert was born January 5, 1922, in Asheville, NC, where he attended school. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and fought in Normandy, France, and the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Medal, the Eamet Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars, the Victory Medal and several others. He was honorably discharged in 1945, and moved back to North Carolina. In 1963, he moved to Fort Dodge, where he worked for Becker’s Roofing. In 1967, he married Nina Erickson in Webster City. After their marriage, the couple lived in Fort Dodge where he worked in the Boston Store furniture department until retiring in 1986. He cared for his wife Nina until her death. In 1996, he married Velda Louise Miner in Fort Dodge, where they lived. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the Golden K. Kiwanis Club, Fort Dodge.

Survivors include wife Velda of Ford Dodge; stepdaughter, Marlene Berte of Fort Dodge; stepsons, Al Erickson Sibley, IA, Jerry Erickson of Little Falls, MN, Darwin Erickson of Lake Havasu City, AZ, David Erickson of Coeur d’ Alene, ID, and Harland Erickson of Mill Creek, WA; sons, Ronald and Gary, both of Ohio, Hezekiah Robert, Jr., of Arizona; daughter, Sherry Dawn of Stillion, OH; grandsons, Marc Erickson, Marty Erickson from Little Falls and Mitchell Erickson of Arden Hills, MN; several great-grandchildren; brothers, John, Jr., of Bastic, NC, and Charles of Asheville, NC, and sisters, Ruby Flick of Lockport, NY, Ruth Pack and Edith Fowler, both of Lareniore, NC, Dora Watkins of Hendersonville, NC, and Nellie Jackson of Greenville, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Baptist and Dovie Mae Revis Watkins and first wife, Nina in 1992.

Randy Moe

Randy Moe, age 53, a resident of rural Cushing, MN, died April 14, 1998, in a vehicle/semi-trailer accident one mile west of Motley, MN. Services were held April 19 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall, MN, with Reverend Terry Stumbo officiating. A burial service was held April 20 in the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora, MN, with Reverend Dennis Buckley officiating.

Randy Phillip Moe was born on November 1, 1944, in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Fred and Marge (Sveum) Moe. Until his retirement to the Cushing area two years ago, he was a partner in the Tull Bearing Co. in Minneapolis. Randy served in the Marine Corps. He was a 32 degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Shrine. Randy will always be in the hearts of the people who knew him.

Survivors include a sister, Pennie Joyce of Mesa, AZ; a brother, Leland Moe of Savage, MN, and sisters-in-law, Gerrie Moe of Savage and Judy Moe of Minnetonka, MN.

He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and a brother, Marshall.

Casketbearers were Lloyd Larson, Rick Holton, Tom Fischer, Mike Motzko, Rick Troedson and Gary Daniels.
