Hannah M. Hohmann
Hannah M. Hohmann, age 81, a resident of Rice, MN, died January 14, 1998 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services for Hannah Hohmann were held January 17 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice, with the Rev. David Maciej officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Hannah M. Hohmann was born July 10, 1916 in St. Stephen, MN to Frank and Anna (Schumer) Trobec. She married Robert Hohmann on September 2, 1940 in St. Stephen Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and lived her entire life in the Rice area. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a jubilee member of the Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Rice Senior Citizens and the Langola Birthday Club.
She is mother and mother-in-law to, Evelyn and Robert Slivnik of St. Stephen, Ruthie Hohmann of St. Cloud, Daniel Hohmann of St. Cloud, Robert and Diane Hohmann of Rice, Frank and Charlene Hohmann of Royalton, MN, Andy Hohmann of Rice, and George Hohmann of Little Falls, MN; sister and brothers, Mary Schimnich of Sartell, MN, John Trobec of St. Cloud, and Tony Trobec of St. Stephen; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert on May 25, 1984; son, Ron on May 24, 1976; brothers, Frank, Joe, and Jim; sister, Annie; and twin sister, Helen Blenkush.
Casketbearers were Jim, Tom, and Gerald Trobec, Philip and Jerome Schimnich, and Bob Blenkush.
Lavina Leeb
Mrs. John ‘Lavina’ Leeb, age 74, a former resident of Lastrup, MN, died January 12, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 14 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lastrup with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Lavina was born July 16, 1923, in Lastrup to George and Anna (Held) Tretter. She was united in marriage with John Leeb on November 26, 1940, in Lastrup. She helped cook in the Lastrup School and enjoyed baking, picking berries and making juice, gardening and canning. Lavina was a member of Christian Mothers in Lastrup.
Survivors include her husband, John; sons, Daniel and wife Lois of Wakeeney, KS, John and wife Ginna of Clearwater, MN, Sylvia Kowalzek of Lastrup and Doreen Waytashek and husband David of Little Falls, MN; sisters, Alice Smude of Brainerd, MN, and Loretta Welle of Pierz; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; three brothers, Alfred, Herbert and Henry Tretter; three sisters, Angeline Faust, Marceline Block and Mary Ann Zormier.
Casketbearers were grandchildren, Kurtis and Kenny Waytashek, Jeff Kowalzek, Jessica and Brian Leeb and Linda Hasert.
Isidor Zimny
Isidor Zimny, age 80, a resident of Royalton, MN, died January 12, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were held January 15 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton with Father Laurn Virnig officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Presentation of the flag was by American Legion Post 371 of Royalton.
Isidor was born April 3, 1917, in Royalton to the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Dylla) Zimny. He grew up on a farm near Royalton where he still resided. He was united in marriage with Clara Leidenfrost on June 7, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Church in Pierz, MN. Isidor was a veteran of World War II. He served on the Royalton School Board, the Bellevue Township Board, the Royalton Creamery Board and the Vawter Phone Co. Board. He was a rural letter carrier for 25 years along with farming, and he was a member of the Royalton American Legion. His many interests consisted of baseball, woodworking, hunting and outdoor activities. He greatly enjoyed being with his 17 grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Clara; children, Cathy Adamek and husband David of Randall, MN, Jerry Zimny and wife Barbe of Esko, MN, Dan Zimny and wife Colleen of Alexandria, MN, Joyce Hochsprung and husband Terry of Hutchinson, MN, Susan Kirchner and husband Tom of Fridley, MN, and Mike Zimny and wife Wendy of St. Cloud, MN; 17 grandchildren; brother, Sylvester “Pete” Zimny and wife Elaine of Royalton and sister, Gertrude Marshik of Pierz, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Steve, Ignatius and Jerome and sisters, Mary and Elizabeth.
Casketbearers were grandsons, Doug Adamek, Ryan Zimny and Adam Zimny and nephews, Paul, Jim and Ed Zimny.
Larry Young
Larry E. Young, age 49, a resident of Bloomington, MN, died January 13, 1998, at his parents’ home in Platte Township, MN.
Funeral services were held January 16 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, MN, with Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Larry was born May 18, 1948, in Little Falls, MN, the son of Everett ‘Mike’ and Eleanor (Hayes) Young. He grew up in Platte Township and attended school in Harding and then graduated from Pierz Memorial High School in 1966. He helped on the family farm for two years. He then entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 and served in Vietnam with the 3rd Field Artillery Battalion in the 12th Marine Division until his discharge in 1970. Larry was united in marriage to Sandy Pulak on August 14, 1971, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding. He worked as an autobody refinisher at Key Cadillac in Bloomington for 23 years until retiring on September 23, 1997. He truly enjoyed the outdoors as an avid bow hunter. He also enjoyed fishing in the company of his friends.
Survivors include his son, Michael Young of St. Cloud, MN; daughter, Michelle Young of Anoka, MN; parents, Everett ‘Mike’ and Eleanor Young of Harding; brothers, Wes Young and wife Donna of Harding and David Young and wife Wendy of Harding; granddaughter, Brittany Young of Anoka; nieces, Angie, Christie, Shannon, Amy and Nicole Young and great-nephew, Brett Young.
Honorary pallbearers were Arvin Hansmann, Joe ‘Cruiser’ Hetrick, Jason Sauve, Craig Hayes and Robert Peterson.
Pallbearers were Bob Young, Gene Young, Lonny Swaser, Ron Krych, Keith Krych and Jeff Pulak.
Dorothy Eilers
Dorothy Eilers, a resident of Alexandria, MN, died January 17, 1998.
A funeral service was held January 19 at the Anderson Funeral Chapel in Alexandria with Pastor Dan Christ officiating. Interment was at the Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN.
Dorothy was born to Daniel and Clara (Edden) Campbell on June 5, 1912, on her grandparents’ homestead in Culdrum Township near Little Falls, MN. She attended a neighborhood country school through grade 8. Upon graduation, she devoted her time to caring for her elderly parents. Dorothy was married to Emmett Eilers on October 2, 1940, and together they continued farming the original Campbell homestead until their retirement. At that time, Dorothy assumed a part-time position at the Swanville post office in Morrison County. Dorothy especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and traveling the country, both with her children and brothers and sisters. The family shares many years of happy memories with Dorothy from family gatherings at the home place. She enjoyed camping and fishing at Lake Winnebigoshish and tending to her garden and yard. She remained on the Century Farm until the fall of 1995 when she moved to Bethel Manor in Alexandria. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Bethany Home.
Survivors include her son, Terry and wife Pauline Eilers of Alexandra; daughter, Clarice and husband Gerald Getz, all of Alexandria; brother, Leland and wife Vollie Campbell of St. Cloud, MN; two sisters, Mabel Drager of Swanville and Evelyn Christle of St. Cloud; a sister-in-law, Iris Campbell of Sauk Centre, MN; four grandchildren, Amber Getz and Jason Eilers, both of Alexandria, Coreen Schoep of Montevideo, MN, and Taryn Gease of Coon Rapids, MN, and two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Colton Schoep.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emmett and brother, Howard Campbell.
Honorary pallbearers were Curt and Lila Drager, Herb and Anice Beseman, Lowell Drager and Kayla Sobiech.
Marie Kawalek
Marie A. Kawalek, age 77, died January 17, 1998, at St. Cloud Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 20 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Onamia, MN, with Father William McNiff officiating. Burial was at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Onamia.
Marie was born October 8, 1920, to George and Rosa (Grimm) Vander Heyden in Faribault, MN. At the age of four, Marie and her family moved to a farm near Onamia, MN. She grew up and attended schools in Onamia, graduating in 1938. Marie continued to live and work on the family farm. On November 9, 1942, Marie was united in marriage to Charles Kawalek at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Onamia. To this union, 10 children were born. Marie was a dedicated farm wife and mother, working the farm with her husband and raising their children. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of her interests were quilting, gardening, bird-watching, picking berries and fishing. Marie was a long time member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Charles; 10 children, Margaret (Al) Dykstra of Onamia, Dora (Terry) Kilcoyne of Cordova, MD, Frances (Wes) Silverberg of Tower, MN, Joseph (Eileen) Kawalek of Lakeville, MN, Albert (Chong) Kawalek of Foreston, MN, Michael (Cindy) Kawalek of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Carol (Gary) Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, Sylvia (Robert) Hanson of Bloomington, MN, Annette (Michael) Choquette of Blaine, MN, and William (Patti Breka) Kawalek of Plymouth, MN; 21 grandchildren, Gary, David, Dennis and Gerry Nohner, Roger and Randy Dykstra, Donna Kawalek, Greta and Karla Silverberg, Katie, Beth and Christine Kawalek, Melinda and Alicia Kawalek, David and Brian Johnson, Rebecca, Gordon and Andrew Hanson and Jessica and Matthew Choquette; five great-grandchildren, Jeremy Stacey, Brandon and Tanya Nohner, Randy and Vanessa Dykstra; two brothers, Joseph and Alphonse Vander Heyden, both of St. Paul, MN; four sisters, Sister Margaret Vander Heyden of Mankato, MN, Clara Ripka of St. Paul, Annetta Strauss of Faribault, MN, and Anne Gleason of Lusby, MD; many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill and a sister, Liz Fincham.
Casketbearers were grandchildren.
Sister Marjorie Ann Renner
Sister Marjorie Ann (Mary Bernard) Renner, age 68, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 18 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
Her funeral and burial service were the at the St. Francis Convent in Little Falls, January 21.
Sister Marjorie Ann was born on December 10, 1929, near Buckman, MN. She was the first of eight children born to the late Victor and Anna (Marshk) Renner. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls on August 12, 1946. She made first profession of vows, August 12, 1948, and final vows on August 12, 1951. She celebrated 50 years as a Franciscan Sister in 1996.
Sister Marjorie Ann received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from the College of St. Catherine’s, St. Paul, MN and a master of science degree as a reading specialist from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN.
Sister Marjorie Ann was a religious education teacher, elementary teacher, librarian, and minister to shut-ins. She ministered in Beardsley, Brown’s Valley, St. Cloud, Royalton, Foley, Little Falls, Osakis, Waite Park, and Fergus Falls.
Survivors include her brothers and sisters: Leon, Foley, MN; Victor, Milaca, MN; Lorraine and Sister Cleone, Little Falls; Eileen Klimek, Carver, MN; JoAnne Strang, Ogilvie, MN; Sister Lucy, Sauk Rapids, MN, and her Franciscan Community.
