Gladys Knettell
Gladys M. Knettell, age 87, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 20, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held May 22 at Peace Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Steven Josephson officiating. Burial was in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN.

Gladys was born June 28, 1910, in Chaska, MN, to the late Fred and Anna (Schwich) Wenz. She was baptized in the Moravian Church in Chanhassen township near Chaska on July 31, 1910. In 1912, she and her family moved to a farm south of Swanville where she attended country school. Gladys was confirmed on November 27, 1927, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville. On June 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Bruno Miller. The couple made their home in Little Falls. Gladys worked for Munssingwear as a seamstress. On May 15, 1954, Gladys was united in marriage to Edward Knettel. They also resided in Little Falls. In February of 1997 Gladys and Eddie moved to the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls, residing there until her death. The couple gave each other 44 years of unconditional love. Gladys was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Little Falls. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Edward of Little Falls; nephew, Merrill and wife Sondra Wenz of Minnetonka, MN, and several great-nieces and nephews and several other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bruno Miller on July 31, 1951; son, David Miller on January 20, 1963; infant sister, Maria and brother, Everetta Wenz.

Pallbearers were Merrill and Todd Wenz.

Frank Hurrle
Frank Xavier Hurrle, age 72, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of Brooklyn Center, MN, died May 20, 1998, at his home on Pierz Fish Lake in Agram Township, Morrison County, MN, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 23 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with the Rev. Kenneth Brenny and Rev. Tom Donaldson officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Frank was born November 7, 1925, in Buckman, Morrison County, MN, to the late Xavier and Mary (Falke) Hurrle. He grew up in Buckman Township and attended school at St. Michael’s Catholic School in Buckman. He entered the United States Navy in January of 1945 and received an honorable discharge in July of 1946. After returning from the service, Frank worked in Montana. He was united in marriage to Doris R. Wuellner on January 29, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Together they lived in Brooklyn Center where he worked in the plastering and drywall trade until his retirement in 1983. Following his retirement, the couple moved to their home on Pierz Fish Lake where he resided until his death. He worked as a volunteer driving the Disabled American Veterans to and from the Twin Cities and other areas, also for Social Services and Horizon Health in Pierz. He delivered Meals on Wheels, was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz and the Pierz American Legion. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors, gardening, card playing, history, reading and traveling all 50 states with his wife Doris. He had a special love for his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Doris; son, Michael Hurrle and wife Carol of Robbinsdale, MN; daughters, Mary Bennett and husband Bryan of Brooklyn Park and Lori Simon and husband Larry of Oakdale, MN; brother, Paul Hurrle and wife Pat of Woodbury, MN; sisters, Philomine Hurrle of Minneapolis, MN, Ida Govett of St. Paul, MN, Edna Monney and husband Warren of New Brighton, MN, Adeline Thommes and husband Ernie of Little Falls, MN, and Rita Flicker and husband Gerald of Pierz; and grandchildren, Christopher, Lisa and Rachel Bennett of Brooklyn Park, Paul and Michelle Simon of Oakdale and Angela and Scott Hurrle of Robbinsdale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Nicholas, Victor, Father Maurice, OSB, Henry, Blaise and Edward Hurrle and sisters, Helen Sitzman and Regina Zenner.

Honorary pallbearers were Ed Zeller, Leo Sitzman, Jack Michael, Gene Carver, Vern Kapus and Gary Solinger. Casketbearers were Christopher Bennett, Paul Simon, Scott Hurrle, Duane Meyer, Bruce Flicker, John Poster and Mark Flicker.

Leo Bellefeuille
Leo Sam Bellefeuille, age 82, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 19, 1998, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 22 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Belle Prairie, MN, with Rev. Harold J. Kost officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Leo was born on December 9, 1915, in Cloquet, Carlton County, MN, the son of the late Eugene P. and Victoria (Valley) Bellefeuille. He grew up in the Fort Ripley, MN, area. He was united in marriage to Iris O. Paquin on August 27, 1949. The couple lived on a farm in Fort Ripley Township where they farmed until retiring to the Little Falls Suburban Park in Little Falls. Leo was involved in road construction, railroad shop until 1965, and farming until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, card playing and visiting. He was a life-long member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Bellefeuille of Little Falls; sons, Clyde Bellefeuille and wife Mary of Fort Ripley, Curtis Bellefeuille and friend Mona of Germany and Russell Bellefeuille and wife Jenny of St. Cloud, MN; daughters, Sandra Grover and husband Don of Redding, CA, and Charlene VanDenheuvel and husband Gary of Hillman, MN; brother, Eugene Bellefeuille, Jr. and wife Joyce of Minneapolis, MN; sisters, Ella Hassing of Pierz, MN, Viola Kastner and husband Alois of Pierz and Rita Nelson and husband Melvin of Little Falls; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant granddaughter.

Honorary pallbearers were Clyde Bellefeuille, Curtis Bellefeuille, Russell Bellefeuille, Mike Stumpf, Kurt Holmgrin, Jeff Habish and Jim Towle.

Casketbearers were Eugene Bellefeuille, Vance VanDenheuvel, Mark VanDenheuvel, Garrett Bellefeuille, Gary VanDenheuvel and Keith Dugas.

Louis VonderHaar

Louis E. VonderHaar of Lake Oswego, OR, passed away from cancer on November 11, 1997.

A Memorial Service was held at Bethlehem Church in Lake Oswego, on November 15, 1997.

He was born April 4, 1927, in Little Falls, MN. He retired from Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company after 34 years of service.

Survivors include his wife Dori; son, Steve; daughter and son-in-law Kim and Brian Barry; granddaughters, Natalie and Madeline; brothers, Carl of Little Falls, MN; Werner Issaquah, WA, and Robert of Fresno, CA.

Eleanor Novitzki

Eleanor Novitzki, age 83, a resident of Brainerd, MN, died December 15, 1997 at the Lutheran Senior Citizens’ Home in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Mark Coen officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery of Brainerd.

Eleanor Novitzki was born on November 2, 1914 in Royalton, MN, daughter of the late Peter and Gertrude (Dubiel) Smieja. She grew up and attended school in Royalton. Eleanor was united in marriage to Peter Novitzki on June 16, 1936 in Royalton. They lived for a short time in Royalton and then moved to Pierz, MN, until 1953. After that they lived in Hill City, MN, until 1957 at which time they moved to Brainerd, where she had been a resident until her death. She worked as a telephone operator and receptionist at the Brainerd State Hospital until her retirement in 1986 at the age of 72. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, making artificial flowers, picking blueberries, fishing and crocheting. She was a great cook, noted for her fried chicken, puzzle bars, etc.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Novitzki of Corvallis, OR, and David Novitzki of Brainerd; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roman and Ralph Smieja of Royalton, Clarence Smieja of Swanville, MN, and a sister, Betty Doroff of Little Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter in 1982; parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers were Jeff, Greg, Nicholas, and Roger Novitski, Greg and Mark Smieja.

Honorary casketbearers were Tom and Mark Novitzki, Gary, Gayle, Mike, and Daniel Smieja.

Levina Klein

Levina Klein, age 75, died December 10, 1997, at her home in Foley, MN.

Services were held December 13 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany, MN. Burial was at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery in Albany.

Levina Klein was born in Glenfield, ND to Henry L. and Ellen (Westvig) Walen. She married Earl C. Klein on September 6, 1953, in St. Cloud, MN.

Survivors include sons, Darrell of Little Falls, MN, Kermit of Waite Park, MN, and James of Foley; seven grandchildren; brothers, Harry, Maynard and August of Cooperstown, ND and Albert of Fargo, ND; sister, Alice Briss of Cooperstown.

She was preceded in death by her husband who died November 27, 1993, an infant brother and one sister, Ella.

James L. Wielinski

James J. Wielinski, age 85, a resident of rural Motley, MN, formerly of Inver Grove Heights, MN, died December 22, 1997 at his home.

Funeral services were held at the Randall Funeral Chapel of Randall, MN, with Father Alvin Quade officiating. Burial followed in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery by Camp Ripley.

James Joseph Wielinski was born on July 4, 1912 in Wyoming, MN, son of the late Thomas and Agnes (Kwiesnwski) Wielinski. He moved with his family to Weyerhauser, WI, at an early age. He grew up and attended school in Weyerhauser, and worked on various farms in the area. He moved to St. Paul, MN, where he worked for Armour’s Meat Packing Plant. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as Staff Sergeant during WWII. Following his honorable discharge he returned to St. Paul where he worked for Griggs-Cooper, Dr. Pepper and then Seegers/ Whirlpool, retiring in 1977. He was united in marriage to Marvella Liebau on July 6, 1946 in St. Paul. They lived in St. Paul until 1966, when they moved to Inver Grove Heights. They lived there until 1994 which is when they moved to their current residents in rural Motley.

Survivors include his wife, Marvella; a son, Roger Wielinski of Cushing, MN; three daughters, Shirley (Bruce) Guetzkow of White Bear Lake, MN, Barbara Haley of Ramsey, MN, and Candice (Nelson) Gebben of Blaine, MN; seven grandchildren, Katie (John) Brown, Lisa and Lori Guetzkow, Dustin and Lance Cpl. Trevor Zeimet, Amy and Sara Gebben; a great-grandson, Alex Brown; three sisters, Vicky Dietsch of St. Paul, Marjorie Wielinski of Minneapolis, and Theresa Joswiak of Bruce, WI and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lance Cpl. Donald James Wielinski; his parents; three brothers, Vincent, Louis, and Thomas Wielinski; six sisters, Ida Michalski, Mary Wicklace, Pauline Struwe, Josephine Wielinski, Rose Angell and Agnes Kosnak.

Casketbearers were his grandchildren.
