Martha Stiller

Martha Stiller, age 89, a resident of Swanville, MN, died December 21 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 24, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, with Father Tom Meyer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Martha was born July 29, 1908 to Peter and Sophie (Bursey) Lampert. She married Sylvester Stiller on February 25, 1930 in Bowlus, MN. They farmed all their married life in the Swanville area. Martha was known to a good cook and loved entertaining family. She was an avid card player, along with doing handiwork. She was a member of Christian Mothers for many years.

Survivors include her four children, Emil Stiller of Swanville, Lorraine Rosty of Swanville, Donald Stiller of Freeport, MN, and Irene Deruytter of Lake Placid, FL; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Agnes Dubiel of Pierz, MN, Mary Brenny, Mrs. Jim (Cecilia) Posch, and Sister Mary Goretti, all of Little Falls, Charlene Lampert of Minneapolis, Mrs. Leroy (Betty) Pollock of Holdingford, MN, Mrs. Wayne (Regina) Lauermann of Waite Park, MN, and Mrs. Emil (Patricia) Frank of Green Valley, AZ; a brother, Albert Lampert of Glendale, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sylvester on April 30, 1974; five brothers, Roman, Joseph, Peter, John I and John II.

Casketbearers were Danny and Neil Stiller, Roger and Richard Stiller, David Rosty and Ed Voight.

Gift bearers were grandchildren, Nick and Laura Stiller.

Rose Marie Sargent

Rose Marie Sargent, age 92, a resident of Park Rapids, MN, formerly of Brainerd, MN, died December 23, 1997 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.

Funeral services will be held December 29, 1997, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Park Rapids, with Father Rick Boyd and Father Edward Nistler officiating. Special music will be provided by the St. Peter’s Funeral Choir. A special musical tribute will be sung by her granddaughter, Sue Zinniel and great-granddaughter, Sarah Zinniel.

Rose was born on May 19, 1905, to Hector and Marion (Doucette) LeDoux near Little Falls, MN. It was in this same area that she attended school at the Belle Prairie Country School and grew into womanhood. As a young woman, she ventured to Chicago, IL, where she worked as a nanny. She later found employment working as a seamstress for the Munsingwear Company in Minneapolis. It was in Brainerd, while she was doing domestic work, that she met John Burrell Sargent. The two were married on July 23, 1935, at her country church in Belle Prairie, MN. This union was blessed with four sons, Pat, Richard, David and Edward and a daughter, Rosemary, who died at birth. The young couple made their home in Brainerd, where Rose dedicated herself to making a warm and loving home for her husband and children. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She will be lovingly remembered for her delicious chocolate chip cookies and homemade breads. She looked forward each spring to planting a large vegetable garden and nurturing it to fruitful abundance, which she would busily can to meet the needs of her growing family. She also enjoyed raising beautiful flowers into colorful splendor for all to see and enjoy. She was an excellent seamstress and she loved to knit, crochet and do embroidery. She was a woman with an abiding faith in God. She was a faithful Catholic who was always actively involved in the churches of her community. Rose was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Park Rapids. In 1980, the couple moved from Brainerd to Park Rapids, where they made their home at the River Heights Apartments and enjoyed being part of that community. She also enjoyed fellowshipping at the Park Rapids Senior Citizen’s Center. Above all, Rose devoted her life to God and her family, all of whom she loved with all her heart.

She will be lovingly remembered by her four sons: Pat of Park Rapids; Richard of Minneapolis; David (Barb) of Duluth, MN, Edward (Sharon) of Fort Worth, TX; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Beatrice Haselkamp, and one brother, Lloyd LeDoux, both of Little Falls, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her daughter, Rosemary; three sisters, Lilly, Clarice and Sylvia; and three brothers, Irving, Walter and Albert.

Thomas Pancratz

Longtime Casper, WY resident Thomas Robert Pancratz passed away on December 19, 1997, in his family home with his wife Katie and children by his side.

A funeral liturgy for Pancratz, 73, was celebrated December 23, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church by Msgr. O’Neill. Rite of Committal was conducted at Highland Cemetery.

Tom was born on July 11, 1924 in Little Falls, MN. He attended Catholic School and, in 1942, he graduated from Little Falls High School. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps as a B17 radio operator. Following the war, Tom studied political science and history at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. An entrepreneur, Tom arrived in Casper in 1949 and founded the Pancratz Roofing and Sheetmetal Co., Inc. From the 1950s through the 1980s the company grew to be the largest and most successful roofing and sheetmetal business in the state of Wyoming. Tom met his wife in Casper, and, in 1957, married in Denver’s St. John Evangelist Church. As a lover of history Tom thrived on travel, visiting several continents including a history-breaking trip to Red China in 1981. Tom also enjoyed family vacations and golfing and fishing trips with many friends. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish, Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, Casper Country Club, and Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen of 40 years; his sister, Barbara Merner of Mesa, AZ; and six children, Carolyn (C.B.) Alif of Buffalo, NY, George of Casper, Mary Ellen Browne of Springfield, MO, Nancy Currah of Casper, Robert of St. Louis, MO, and Patricia Bevier of Santa Barbara, CA, and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother George, who was killed in WWII; his first wife Rachel, his father Lambert, his mother Irene and his sister Trudy.

Sister Mary Angela (Clara) Karsnia

Sister Mary Angela (Clara) Karsnia, age 91, died on November 4, 1997 at the St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were at St. Francis Convent on November 7.

Sister Mary Angela (Clara) was born on March 9, 1906, near Frazee, MN. She was the second child born to the late Louis and Josephine (Wolkowski) Karsnia. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls on August 12, 1927. She made first profession of vows, August 12, 1929, and final vows August 12, 1932. She celebrated 60 years as a Franciscan Sister in 1987. Sister Angela ministered as a cook and/or baker at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls, 1929, and 1965-1978; St. Cloud Orphanage, St. Cloud, 1929-1940; St. Ansgar Hospital, Moorhead, 1940-1944; St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, 1944-1957; St. Cloud Children’s Home, St. Cloud, 1957-1959; Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Alexandria, 1959-1963; St. Mary’s Convent, Alexandria, 1963-1965. In 1978 she retired to St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, where she continued to fill her days with tatting, crocheting and embroidery work in the activities department as long as she was able.

Survivors include her brother, Walter of Detroit Lakes, MN and her Sisters: Eleanor Trowbridge, Detroit Lakes, MN, Vivian Kline and Florence Shaskey, Brooklyn Park, MN, Jean Scheidecker, Frazee, MN, Harriet Fryer, Elk River, MN and her Sisters in religious life.

Bernice Eva Perry

Bernice Eva Perry, age 73, a resident of Athens, WI, passed away November 4, 1997, at Good Samaritan Health Center in Merrill, WI.

Bernice was born February 10, 1924, in Swanville, MN, to Winnie (Mortenson) and Ernest Axel. She was a graduate of St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Duluth, MN, and worked many years at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. She had been a member of First English Lutheran Church, Little Falls, was the former State President of the Emergency Department Nurses Association and was instrumental in getting the Kidney Dialysis Department going at St. Gabriel’s Hospital. She retired from nursing on October 1, 1987. She enjoyed playing bingo, traveling, her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Ronald) Nunnally of Richmond, VA; sons, John (Jennifer) Perry of Athens, WI, Curtis (Ginger) Perry of Little Falls; and Duane Perry of West Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren; sisters, Gertrude (John) Moe of Missoula, MT, and Florence (Ray) Green of Little Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson.

Orval Fleck

Orval F. Fleck, age 73, of the Foley Nursing Center, Foley, MN, died November 8, 1997.

Funeral services were November 12 at the Foley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Gorman officiating. Burial was in the Lone Pine Cemetery in Morrill, MN.

Orval was born February 22, 1924, in Oak Park, MN, to Fred and Mary (Westphall) Fleck. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He married Rose Adams September 19, 1957. He was a life-long resident of Mille Lacs County until moving to Foley three weeks ago. Orval had worked for Twin City Steel and Hitchcock Mfg. of Minneapolis, MN. He had also farmed. He was a member of Hillman American Legion Post 602 and Onamia American Legion Post 655.

Survivors include his daughters and sons, Helen Johnson of Onamia, MN, Orval, Jr., of Richfield, MN, Harold of Minneapolis, Samuel of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Jeff of Robbinsdale, MN; step-children, Caroline Westphall of Foley, Mary Andrews of Minneapolis, Alice Kraker of LaQuiten, CA, Dorothy Hoffman of Minot, ND, Steve Andrews of Minneapolis, John Andrews of Minneapolis and Earl Andrews of Minneapolis; brothers and sisters, Murl of Mora, MN, Harold of Ham Lake, MN, Sam of Minneapolis, Lester of Hillman, MN, Lesely of Hillman, Lucy Jackson of Minneapolis, Lavera Gadacz of Hillman, Milly Carson of Sauk Rapids, MN, and Pearl Reynolds of Coon Rapids, MN; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose in 1977; brother, Richard in 1996 and a granddaughter, Laura Johnson in 1990.

Pallbearers were Ronney Fleck, Eugene Gadacz, Danny Stachovich, Jim and Wendell Fleck, Bob Cranz and Danny Sauer.

William McLain

William “Bill” J. McLain, age 59, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died November 8, 1997, at the St. Cloud, MN, hospital.

Funeral services were held November 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.

William was born June 26, 1938, in Canby, MN, to William and Odelia (Hauger) McLain. He grew up in Canby and graduated from the Canby High School. Bill then worked for Anderson’s Standard Station in Canby until entering the U.S. Army in June, 1961. He was honorably discharged in June, 1963, but continued to serve in the Army Reserve until June, 1967. William was united in marriage to Diane J. Peterson on August 3, 1963, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby. In March, 1964, Bill began working at National Bushing in Little Falls and worked as an auto parts jobber/salesman until November 7, 1997. He enjoyed working as a stock car racing pit crewman, woodworking, snowmobiling and caring for his lawn. Bill was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, American Legion Post 46, and formerly, the SnoDogs.

Survivors include wife, Diane; sons, Shawn McLain and wife Lori of Baxter, MN, and Quinn McLain of Minneapolis, MN; daughter, Kari McLain at home; mother, Odelia McLain of Canby; brother, Justin McLain of Canby; sisters, Patricia McLain of Pasadena, CA, Rosemary Amber and husband Wally of Rochester, MN, and Margaret Moore and husband Roy of Cushing, MN, and grandson, Mitchell McLain.

He was preceded in death by his father; son, Steven McLain and brothers, Joe and Gerald McLain.

Honorary pallbearers were employees of National Bushing. Pallbearers were Bill Noble, Marv and Scott Hillig, Norm Hansen, Joe Stavish and Cleo Meyer.
