Mattie M. Strauch
Mattie M. Strauch, age 95, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Hillman, MN, died September 7, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held September 13 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hillman, MN, with the Rev. Lynn Brotten officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Brainerd, MN.

Mattie M. Strauch was born on November 1, 1901, in Boone, IA, to the late Fred and Mae (Walter) Orbin. She graduated from Sandstone High School in Sandstone, MN, and then attended normal training (teachers training) in St. Cloud for two years. Mattie taught school from 1922-1931 in Duequette, MN, and Hillman, MN. She was united in marriage to Otto Strauch on June 24, 1931, in Little Falls, MN. The couple made their home in Hillman where they owned the General Store for a number of years and where Mattie was Postmaster from 1942-1968 at which time she retired. Following retirement they spent the winters in Florida. Otto died on December 29, 1974. Mattie continued living in Hillman until 1979 when she moved to Little Falls. Mattie was active in the Senior Citizens Center in Little Falls. She entered the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in Little Falls in May of 1993 where she resided until her death. Mattie enjoyed knitting, crocheting and crafts.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Strauch; parents; brother, Alex Orbin and sisters, Lucille Gidley and LaVerne Orbin.

Pallbearers were Donald Strauch, Key Kiehr, Lawrence Sherwood, Ken Havlik, Darwin Dahlke and Peter DeZurik.

George Heathcock
George Heathcock, age 86, a resident of Pillager, MN died September 5, 1997, at the Lutheran Senior Citizens Home in Little Falls.
Services were private.

George Thomas Heathcock was born May 19, 1911, in Iowa to the late Joseph H. and Anna Heathcock. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Brown. He lived at Lake Minnetonka where he owned and operated a plumbing and heating business. He and Dorothy moved to Gull Lake in 1966 where they owned and operated Channel View Restor until his retirement in 1977. Dorothy died in 1978. George married Flora Evans in 1980. Following his retirement they moved to Crosslake and then to Garrison for approximately 10 years. They wintered in Arizona, then recently lived with his son George at Pillager. Flora died in 1994. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two sons, George Krushe of Pillager, Ed Krushe of Nisswa; a sister, Ethel Dahlgren of Woodland Hills, CA; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Dorothy and second wife Flora, two brothers and a sister.

Edward J. Brandl
Edward J. Brandl, age 87, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, died September 6, 1997, in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids, MN.
Funeral services were September 10 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud with the Rev. Timothy Baltes officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in St. Cloud.

Edward J. Brandl was born August 30, 1910, to John and Frances (Jansen) Brandl of Buckman, MN. He married Mercedes “Sadie” Hiemenz on September 7, 1936, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. He was employed as a brakeman and conductor with the Great Northern Railroad, St. Cloud, for 33 years , retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, St. Cloud, Eagles Aerie #622, St. Cloud, Golden Kiwanis, and the National Association of Railroad Veterans Employees.

Survivors include his wife; children, John of Afton, MN, Donald of York, PA, Judy Tembrock, Cupertino, CA, Gene, Apple Valley, MN, Edward “Gary”, St. Helena, CA; and, Suzanne Tefft, San Jose, CA; 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Roman, St. Cloud; and, Alfred, Marshall, MN; and one sister, Florence Brandl, Bloomington, MN.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Adela Zenner and Leona Baron.

Pallbearers were grandchildren, Chris, Katherine, Jean, John, Peter, Amy, Laura and Jane Brandl.

Evan Wink

Evan Alexander Wink, infant son of Rodney and Janell (Preimesberger) Wink of Brainerd, MN, died March 30, 1998, at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral services were held April 3 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel with Father Seamus Walsh officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd.

Evan was born March 23, 1998, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.

Survivors include his parents, Rodney and Janell Wink; one brother, Alex at home; his maternal grandparents, James and Rosemarie Preimesberger of Roseville, MN; his maternal great-grandmother, Julia Janson of Harding, MN; his paternal grandparents, Allen and Marcia Wink of Brainerd and his paternal great-grandparents, Bill and Eva of Welcome, MN.

Carl Thornton

Carl Thornton, age 69, a resident of Vermillion, OH, died March 24, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held March 27 at the Riddle Funeral Home in Vermillion, OH, with the Reverend Robert Wang officiating. Burial was at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermillion.

Carl was born May 22, 1928. He married Lydia Kahlhamer of Hillman, MN, on May 14, 1954.

Survivors include his wife Lydia of Vermillion; two sons C. Michael and wife Susan of Simpsonville, S.C., Brad and wife Mary Beth of Denver, N.C. and three daughters, Melanie Fowler and husband Bruce of Defiance, OH, Michelle Hartsel and husband Tim of Vermillion, and Jill Krutkiewcz and husband John of Lorraine, OH, and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Harold V. Kintop

Harold V. Kintop, age 70, a resident of Phoenix, AZ, passed away March 29, 1998, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Phoenix.

Funeral services were held April 4 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN. Father Mark Stang officiated. Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

Harold was born February 14, 1928, in Little Falls, to Phillip and Thelma (Stuart) Kintop. He married Bernice Myrfield, July 12, 1952, in Warren, MN. He grew up in the Little Falls area, graduating from Swanville High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a Greyhound Bus driver out of Milwaukee, and then worked for an over-the-road trucking company. He retired to Phoenix in 1988.

Survivors include his four children and spouses: Bruce (Sue) Kintop, Colorado Springs, CO, Sandra Winchell, Milwaukee, WI, Cynthia (Robert) Peret, Milwau-kee, WI, Gregory (Lori) Kintop, Milwaukee; his mother, Thelma Kintop, Long Prairie, MN; two brothers and three sisters: Clement Kintop, Minneapolis, MN, Dr. Gerald Kintop, Long Prairie, Phyllis Eix, Park Rapids, MN, Elaine Jacobson, Milaca, MN, Bernice Jacobson, Blaine, MN; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1986 and his ex-wife Bernice in 1993.

Robert E. Poegel

Robert E. Poegel, age 35, of Long Prairie, MN, passed away April 1, 1998, at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home in Long Prairie, MN.

Funeral services were held April 4 at the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, MN. Rev. David Sorenson officiated. Burial took place at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Long Prairie Township.

Robert was born November 27, 1962, in Long Prairie to Marvin and Betty (Wiseth) Poegel. He attended Swanville High School. After his schooling he worked for area farmers. He then went to work as a tool and die maker at Little Falls Fabricating. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, riding and working on motorcycles, fixing small engines, doing field work for farmers, and animals, especially dogs. He spent two years in the Colorado mountains working at a motel and fixing small engines. While attending school he was a member of the F.F.A. and Cub Scouts.

Survivors include his father, Marvin Poegel, of Long Prairie; mother, Betty Poegel of Royalton; step-mother, Kathy Poegel of Long Prairie; his maternal grandmother, Inez Wiseth of Little Falls, MN; brothers and sisters, Roxie (Gary) Grell of Melrose, MN, Marvin Jr. (Laurie) Poegel of Lincoln, MN, Cheryl (Howard) Hedin of Swanville, Paul (Debbie) Poegel of Little Falls, Pat (Ruth) Poegel of Burtrum, MN, Carol (Rich) Cook of Milwaukee, WI, and John Poegel of Little Falls.

Rose Miller

Rose Miller, a resident of Albany, MN, formerly of Holdingford, MN, died April 21, 1998, at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Funeral services were held April 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

Rose was born in Freeport, MN, to John B. and Mary Josephine (Bischoff) Klasen. She marred Stanley Miller in 1926 in St. Paul. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford, and the Holdingford Christian Mothers. She was a Red Cross volunteer and a volunteer librarian at Whitney Senior Center. She also volunteered for the Holdingford Blood Bank and Community Chest (United Way). She and her husband owned Miller’s Cash and Carry Grocery Store in St. Paul for 25 years.

Survivors include children, Helen Richard of Burtrum, MN, and Mark of North Platte, NE; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brothers and sisters, Marcella of Holdingford, Mary Haney of North Brook, IL, Quirren of Dalton, GA, Leona Schultz of Sauk Centre, MN, and Dorrine Solberg of Michigan City, IN.

She was preceded in death by her husband who died in February of 1997; three brothers, Joseph, Albert and Leo and two sisters, Helen Stinson and Odelia Schultz.
