Theresa Klisch

Theresa Klisch died April 23, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services were held April 27 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Theresa was born October 2, 1912, in North Prairie, MN, to Valentine and Anna (Stodolka) Jendro. She married Edward Klisch on November 9, 1932, in North Prairie. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, the Rosary Sodality of Bowlus and Elmdale and was past president of the funeral fund and Rosary Sodality. She was in charge of the candles at St. Stanislaus Church. She worked in food service at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, cooking, baking and visiting with friends at the coffee shop.

Survivors include her husband of Bowlus; children, Marcie Boros of Little Falls, MN, Jim and wife Katherine of St. Paul, MN, Patricia Jossart and husband Merle of Buffalo, MN, Kathy Atkinson and husband Don of Hamel, MN, Lois Lampert and husband Clarence of Bowlus, Alice Boser and husband Earl of Zimmerman, MN, Bob and wife LaVerne of St. Paul, Jane Okronglis and husband Leonard of Ham Lake, MN, Jean Mrozinski of Mounds View, MN, Karen Struzyk and husband Stanley of Holdingford, MN, Anne Bierma and husband Pieter of Cottage Grove, MN, and Mary Lou Czerniak and husband Bill of Shoreview, MN; 37 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and brother, Clarence of Bowlus.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rose Ann and three brothers, Peter, Leo and Otto.

Frank Huver

Frank Huver, age 56, a resident of Hastings, MN, formerly of Pierz, MN, died at the Vets Home in Hastings April 23, 1998.

Funeral services were held at the Ellis Funeral Home in Hastings. Burial was in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery on April 28.

Frank was born to Joe and Catherine (Prigelmeir) Huver July 6, 1941, and attended Pierz schools. He enlisted in the Army in 1960 and served two years ATO in Germany. After his return he married Barbra Raihle of Brainerd, MN, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, MN. They settled near Buckman. Frank worked for Don’s Welding for several years and he had a milk route. He also worked for Brandl Motor Service. Later he moved with his family to Las Vegas, NV, where he worked for his brother, Joe. When his health failed he came back to Pierz and later entered the Vets Home in Hastings.

Survivors include his wife, Barbra; sons, Dennis and Bob of Burnsville, MN, and Steven of Las Vegas; brothers, John and wife Roslyn of St. Stephen, MN, Richard and wife Bernell of Spring Lake Park, MN, and Joe and wife Sharon of Las Vegas and sister, Florence Britz of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Catherine and sisters, Ann Block, Evelyn Block and Lorraine Britz.

Charles Trettel

Charles Mark Trettel, age 79, a lifelong resident of Little Falls, MN, died April 26, 1998, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Charles was born October 26, 1918, in Little Falls, Morrison County, MN, to the late Otto D. and Veronica S. (Mohr) Trettel. He attended Little Falls School and graduated from the Class of 1937. Following his schooling, he worked with his father at Trettel Produce in Little Falls. He entered the United States Army on June 25, 1941. He served in Company A, 1710 Signal Service Battalion, receiving the Distinguished Unit Citation GO #23 with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Good Conduct Medal GO #16 79th FW Group 44. Charles received an honorable discharge on September 8, 1945. He returned to Little Falls working with his father in the produce business. Following his father’s death, Charles continued operating Trettel Produce, residing in Little Falls until his death. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Little Falls American Legion Post #46, Little Falls VFW Post #1112, Knights of Columbus and was an avid bowler.

Survivors include his brother, Otto and wife Nancy of Minnetonka, MN; sisters, Alice Romano of Farmgindale, Long Island, NY, Mary Phillips and husband Eldred of Owatonna, MN, Millie Ebert and husband Leo of Duluth, MN, Florence Mayer and husband Vince of Monticello, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1965, mother in 1970 and a sister, Bernadine Trettel at the age of three years.

Casketbearers were Vince Mayer, Eldred Phillips, Leo Ebert, Jack Zobova, Roger Blake and Ed Stumpf.

Bernard J. Vasecka
Bernard J. Vasecka, age 86, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Staples, MN, died August 10, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held August 13 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples with Father Lauren Germann officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Hills Cemetery.

Bernard James Vasecka was born on May 26, 1912, in Cass County, MN, the only child of the late James and Mary (Kaveney) Vasecka. He grew up on a farm near Staples. He attended Sacred Heart grade school and graduated from Staples High School in 1930. After his graduation, Bernard farmed with his father on the family farm near Staples. He was united in marriage to Hazel Buckingham on May 3, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Park Rapids, MN. The couple made their home on the family farm where they farmed. Bernard also was employed by Benson Optical in Staples for ten years until his retirement in 1978. In 1980, the couple purchased a home closer to Staples and lived there until their move to Little Falls in 1994. Bernard’s hobbies were mowing grass which he did at the Terrace Golf Course, golfing, dancing, reading and spending time with his family. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples and was currently a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. He was also a former member of the Terrace Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Hazel Vasecka of Little Falls; daughters, Peggy Martin and husband Charlie of Little Falls, and Deb Schey and husband Chuck of Nisswa, MN; and grandchildren, Gina Madzo, Jennifer Retka, Maria, Paul and Matthew Martin.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Bernard, and daughter, Patricia Madzo.

Honorary pallbearers were Gerald Steele and Ken Richardson and other co-workers at Benson Optical.

Casketbearers were Leland Webster, Duane Imsande, Paul Martin, Matthew Martin, Ronald Steele, and Mark Larson.

George M. (Shorty) Nelson

George M. (Shorty) Nelson died on February 2, 1998 at the El Dorado Convalescent Hospital in Placervill, CA at the age of 95.

George was born at Cambridge, IA on June 2, 1902 to the late George and Margaret Nelson. He moved to the Fort Ripley, MN area with his family at an early age. He was united in marriage to Elsie Sharp on August 29, 1923. They lived and farmed in the Fort Ripley area until 1986 when they moved to Georgetown, CA. He retired from farming in 1966 and moved to Fort Ripley where he spent his time fishing in the Mississippi River and taking care of their yard and garden.

Survivors include one son, George Mike Nelson of Riverside, CA; daughters, Maxine Orton of Little Falls, MN, and Marjorie Peterson of Georgetown, CA; a sister, Fern Noe of Little Falls; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and six great-great grand-children.

He was preceded in death by Elsie on September 26, 1994, his wife of 71 years, and daughter, Mary Gilson, on June 2, 1995; four brothers; two sisters and a great-grandson.
Gladys L. Timmsen

Gladys L. Timmsen, age 80, a resident of Staples, MN died February 10, 1998, at the Greater Staples Care Center. Services were held February 14 at the Greater Staples Care Center with Rev. Dan Almquist officiating.

Gladys Louise Timmsen was born June 14, 1917, in North Dakota, to the late Clarence and Arvelia (Peddleton) Call. In 1952 she married Daniel Timmsen in South St. Paul. For many years she worked curing bacon in the meat packing plant. Following their retirement the couple traveled across the country. She moved from California to Motley just a few years ago and most recently was a resident of the Greater Staples Care Center.

Survivors include three sons and three daughters; a sister, Sarah Robetor from Motley, MN; a brother, Albert Call in Kansas; many grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Steven Balck

Steven Douglas Balck, age 20, of Willmar, died February 5, 1998 near St. Bonifacius, MN, from injuries sustained in a semi-truck accident.

Steven was born March 22, 1977, in Fargo, ND. He was a 1995 graduate of Willmar Senior High School where he participated in Cardinal Choir. He graduated from Alexandria Technical College as Vice President of his trucking class. He was employed by Fuchs Transport of Melrose, MN.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Marilyn Balck of Royalton, MN, and Paul and Carol Parker of Willmar; sisters Kari and Kris Balck; step-brother Michael Volkenant; step-sisters Barb Walstrom and Deb Enmark; grandparents Borghild Krueger of Willmar and Eugene and Hilda Doble of Royalton; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by three grandparents.

Veronica Schmitz

Veronica A. Schmitz, age 89, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Sauk Centre, MN, died February 9, 1998 at her daughter’s home in Little Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 12 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, with the Rev. Timothy Wenzel officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Veronica was born in Spring Hill, MN to Bernard and Mary (Hiltner) Wolbeck. She was united in marriage to Theodore Schmitz on October 1, 1929 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. The couple farmed in St. Martin until 1947 when they moved to a farm near Padua. Theodore died on May 25, 1950. She moved to Sauk Centre in 1956 and worked in the Main Street Cafe. She later resided in Richmond, Spring Hill and Watkins before moving to her daughter’s home in Little Falls in 1991. Her special hobby was making quilts and doing other crafts. She always enjoyed hearing about the activities of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Brenner of Little Falls, and Matilda Petermeier and her husband, Romie, of Sauk Centre; seven sons, Wilfred Schmitz and his wife, Marita of Sauk Centre, Edmund Schmitz and his wife, Diane, of Medina, OH, John Schmitz and his wife, Betty of Litchfield, MN, Sylvester Schmitz and his wife, Cathy of Hudson, WI, Edwin Schmitz and his wife, Myrna of Darwin, MN, Edward Schmitz and his wife, Cindy of Watkins, MN, Arnold Schmitz and his wife, Carol, of Litchfield; 46 grandchildren; 80 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Francis Schneider and her husband, Joseph, of Meire Grove, MN, and Gertie Scherping of Swanville, MN; three brothers, Martin Wolbeck and his wife, Irene, of St. Cloud, MN, Leonard Wolbeck and his wife, Sandar, of St. Cloud, Alfred Wolbeck and his wife, Erma, of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Margie Schmitz of Atwater, MN; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Wolbeck of Grey Eagle, and Bernie Wolbeck of Cushing; a brother-in-law, Markus Nordman of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; son, Bernard Schmitz; three infant children; sisters, Christine Nordman, Marie Thieschafer, Theresia Sunder and Appolonia Fleisch-hacker; brothers, Bernard, Albert, Leo and Edwin Wolbeck.

Serving as casketbearers were her grandsons, Robert, Daniel, Kerry, Ronald, Charles and Richard Schmitz, Wayne Brenner and Thomas Petermeier with Pauline Braybeck serving as cross bearer.
