Cecelia Malinowski

Cecelia Malinowski, age 84, a resident of Pierz, MN, died January 1, 1998, at her home.

Mass of Christian Burial was January 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Cecelia was born June 25, 1913, in Pierz Township to the late Joseph and Martha (Gray) Przybilla. She was united in marriage with Edward Malinowski on November 25, 1936, in Buckman, MN. They farmed in the Harding and Buckman area until retiring in 1973. Cecelia enjoyed gardening, quilting, braiding rugs, bird watching, and was active in the Senior Center in Pierz. She was also a member of Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her sons, Ralph of Pierz, Ronald and wife Sandra of Fort Ripley, MN, and Joseph and wife Mary of Pierz; daughters, Kathleen Meyer and husband Jerome of Pierz, Frances Roche and husband Angel of Crookston, MN, and Eloise Becker and husband Oliver of Shoreview, MN; brothers, Tony Przybilla of St. Cloud, MN and Al Przybilla of Little Falls; sisters, Mary Marshik and Mildred Proell both of St. Cloud, and Joretta Hoehisel of Pierz; 29 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; five brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers were Mark and Daniel Malinowski, Jerry and Kevin Malinowski, Thomas Becker and Gary Meyer.

Laura Killmer

Laura “Grace” Killmer, age 86, a resident of Pierz, MN, died January 6, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.

Funeral services were held January 9 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, MN, with Rev. Terry Stumbo officiating. Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery at Blackduck, MN.

Laura “Grace” Killmer was born on October 19, 1911, at Blackduck, daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Kirkpatrick) Houchins. She graduated from Blackduck High School and then attended Bemidji State College. She taught school at Rabideau for a few years. She was united in marriage to Harland Killmer on April 20, 1935, in Bemidji, MN. They lived in Blackduck, Baudette, Brainerd, Isanti and St. Cloud. She had been a resident of the Harmony House in Pierz since March of 1991. She enjoyed sewing and reading.

Casketbearers were Thomas, Mark, Jim and Todd Crawford, Craig Killmer and Jeffrey Killmer.

Clarence Hayes
Clarence W. Hayes, age 84, a resident of Harding, MN, died January 6, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held January 8 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding with Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Clarence was born July 27, 1913, in Platte Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Walter and Martha (Koselke) Hayes. He grew up in Platte Township and attended country school. Clarence helped his parents farm until 1929. He then went to Duluth and worked on a dairy farm. He moved to Washington and worked as a logger until entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served in Guam and Hawaii until his discharge in 1946. He returned to Harding and owned and operated Hayes Garage. Clarence was united in marriage to Margaret James on October 4, 1947, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding. Clarence was also part owner and operator of the Hayes Bus Co. from 1940-1957. In 1955, he began working road construction as a supervisor/foreman for C.L. Stodolka Construction Co. and then Tri-City Paving until retiring in 1986. Clarence served as mayor of Harding for 29 years, and was a Morrison County Commissioner in 1952. He enjoyed cross country skiing, ice fishing, gardening, bowling and deer hunting. Clarence was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, the Holy Name Society, Little Falls Knights of Columbus Post #1804, Little Falls VFW Post #1112 where he served as post commander and the Pierz American Legion Post #341.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hayes; sons, David Hayes of Harding and Daniel Hayes and wife Margaret of Harding; daughters, Dorothy Sanders and husband Calvin of Randall, MN, Patricia Dumprope and husband Richard of Fort Ripley, MN, Diane Petersen and husband Daniel of Elmdale, MN, and Gloria Austin and husband James of Little Falls, MN; brothers, Lloyd Hayes of Little Falls and Earl Hayes and wife Myrtle of Roseville, MN; sisters, Agnes Young and husband John of Little Falls and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Michael Dumprope; brothers, Lester, Loren and Archie Hayes and sisters, Eulalia “Lolly” Sween and Elsie Thompsen.

Pallbearers were Oliver Rudolph, Jack Skochenski, Roger Donek, Daniel Kozulla, Ronald Gross and Willis Schlegel.

Gertrude Kerkhoff

Gertrude Kerkhoff, age 91, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 5, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was January 9 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Gertrude was born in Little Falls on February 10, 1906 to Paul and Stella (Ebertowski) Prozinski. She attended school in Little Falls and attended Teacher Training School for one year. She also taught at a rural school before and after her marriage. Gertrude was united in marriage with Milton Kerkhoff on August 20, 1928 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Little Falls. Following their marriage, they resided in Agram Township, prior to moving to Little Falls in 1981. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, and of Christian Mothers. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and sewing.

Survivors include a son, Milton Jr. of Chicago, IL, and John R. of Little Falls; a daughter, June Musielewicz of St. Cloud; a sister, Louise Ginter of Little Falls; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Milton; son John; one grandchild; one brother Sylvester; four sisters, Stella, Johanna, Mary Ann, and Helen.

Casketbearers were grandchildren of Gertrude.

Edward Schroeml
Edward Schroeml, age 83, a resident of Brainerd, MN, formerly of the Harding, MN area, died January 22, 1998 at the St. Cloud, MN Hospital.

Graveside services were held at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd on January 28, with Father Seamus Walsh officiating.

Edward was born August 9, 1914 in Little Falls, MN, the son of the late Andrew and Julia (Brisk) Schroeml. Edward married Caro-line Janeck on August 5, 1978 in Brainerd. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge #1246 in Brainerd. Edward enjoyed fishing, hunting and building things.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline; a son Ronald Schroeml of Brainerd; 2 stepsons Clarence Brown, Jr. of St. Paul, and Paul Brown of Brainerd; 2 daughters, Beverly Mudford and Diane Gildart both of Brainerd; 2 stepdaughters, Laura Bisted and Cynthia Gerard, both of Brainerd; a sister Louise Schubert of Brainerd, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grand children and 3 step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Veronica who died February 6, 1977 in Brainerd; both parents; 2 daughters, Barbara and Joyce; 2 brothers, Leonard and Alfred.

Gordon Salisbury
Gordon Salisbury, age 80, a resident of Pierz, MN, and formerly of the Minnewaukan and Maddock areas, died January 12, 1998 at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.

Funeral services were held January 16, at the Nelson Funeral Home Chapel in Maddock with Pastor Jerry Boerner officiating. Burial was in the Minnewaukan Cemetery, Minnewaukan, ND.

Gordon was born November 20, 1917 at Minnewaukan to Claude and Polly (Rau) Salisbury. He was raised and educated in Minnewaukan. In 1941, he joined the Army, serving in the 6th Infantry Division Battery, 80th Field Artillery. Gordon served in the South Pacific during WWII for 112 days of continuous combat. The 6th Division was later cited by General Krueger of the 8th Army for its performance. Gordon was honorably discharged November 14, 1945 at Fort Lewis, WA. He then worked in Maddock for the North Dakota State Highway Department. Gordon then moved to Fargo and later to St. Cloud, MN. Since 1972, he has resided at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.

Survivors include a brother, Roger (Betty) Salisbury of Jetmore, KS; and three sisters: Mavis (Mrs. Albert) Deines of Seattle, WA, Cecil (Mrs. Floyd) Iverson of Fargo, ND and Joy (Mrs. Elmer) Beckman of Wick-enbury, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Salisbury; a sister, Rachel Johnson and an infant brother, Josey Salisbury.

The Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post #123 of Maddock accorded the Military Rites and served as casketbearers.

Agnes Hedin
Agnes O. Hedin, age 86, a resident of Davenport, IA, formerly of Upsala, MN, died January 4, 1998, at Davenport Lutheran Home, Davenport.

Funeral services were held on January 10 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton, IA, with Rev. Michael Holm of Clinton and Rev. Michael of Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport, officiating. Burial was at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

Agnes was born January 21, 1911, to Ferdinand and Blondina (Ulrich) Oestreich in New Ger-many, MN. The family settled near Pine Lake, Burtrum, MN, in 1927. She graduated from Upsala High School in 1931. She married Robert Hedin on June 6, 1931, in Grey Eagle, MN. They lived in Upsala until moving to Clinton in 1941, returning to Upsala in 1945 to own and operate Hedin Grocery. They returned to Clinton in 1952. Her husband, Robert, died January 11, 1973. Agnes retired after 20 years as a repair operator at the Clinton Garment Company. She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton and more recently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Davenport. Her ardent interests and hobbies included crafting, gardening, fishing, watching baseball, her family, nature and the outdoors.

Survivors include daughters, Donna (Joe) Kampling, Sr., of Camanche, IA, and Darlene (Don) Krenz of Westport, CT; grandchildren, Steven (Christina) Ryner of Fulton, IL, Renée (Ken) Carsto of Miami Beach, FL, Carolyn (Antone) Balbo of Short Hills, NJ, Jeanne (Phil) Krenz-Hinck of Westport, Dawnita (Jim) Neff of Davenport, Joseph “Rocky” (Becky) Kampling, Jr., of Shullsburg, WI, Kaywyn (Paul) Beswick of Morrison, IL, and Kim (Dan) Bennett of Fulton; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Fagerman of Walker, MN; sister-in-law Edna Hedin of Melrose, MN; cousins, Glen Johnson of West Concord, MN, and Myrtle Mokros of Upsala; and several nieces and nephews, including from this area Shirley (David) Holmen of Upsala, Marilyn (John) Gerlach of Upsala and Ruby Stein and Myrtle Rundquist, both of Little Falls, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a granddaughter, Jennifer and 12 brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers were Donald Krenz, Joseph Kampling, Sr., Joseph Kampling, Jr., Les Humphreys, Gail Ryner and Ken Carsto. Honorary pallbearers were James Neff and Ron Luckritz.

Edwin Axel
Edwin K. “Ed” Axel, age 89, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of the Randall, MN area, died January 26, 1998, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held January 29 at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Martin Langemo officiating.

Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery.

Edwin was born November 13, 1908, in Culdrum Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Frederick and Mary (Rahn) Axel. He grew up in Culdrum Township and attended country school. Edwin was united in marriage to Ella H. Petrich on October 1, 1932, in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Culdrum Township. They settled on a rented farm west of Lincoln, MN, until 1935. They returned to Culdrum Township and farmed until 1944. The couple then purchased a farm southwest of Randall and resided there until moving into Little Falls in 1955. Ed worked at Hennepin Paper Mill for 18 years, retiring in 1973. He then worked at Little Falls Granite Works for a few years. He served as the caretaker of the animals in Pine Grove Park for eight years. The couple sold their home and resided in a townhouse. Ed enjoyed gardening, fishing and taking care of his lawn. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Ella H. Axel; sons, Edwin Axel, Jr., and wife Joan of Belle Vista, AR, and Harvey Axel and wife Darlene of Little Falls; daughters, Beatta Mielke and husband Loren of Swanville, MN, Dorothy Decker and husband Edward of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Audrey Hopke and husband Terry of St. Cloud, MN; a sister, Marie Doucette of Little Falls; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ernest, Otto, Arthur and Herbert Axel; sister, Erma Hanson and grandsons, Bryan and Gregg Axel.

Pallbearers were grandsons.
